Hey hoping you see this message. I know you read comments. Ze Frank (if your not familiar with his channel...EPIC AND EDUCATIONAL in humorous ways) put a video out a hour ago (my time, that is) titled Fish That Suck.

I read an article about the dumpster betta months ago. According to the manager, a new employee put the new shipment box in the to-dumpster shelf by accident and the cleanup crew threw it away. The woman took all the fish home and tried to give them away before calling the store the next morning. Only 2 betta died. The manager said they're making stricter stocking mandates so it doesn't happen again.

@snikerdoodlefox3979 right. i worked at petsmart. at my store someone nearly got fired for not wrapping and labelling a deceased animal properly when freezing it for the vet- but it's still a terrible company for a thousand other reasons, this makes criticism of petsmart seem a little less trustworthy

I feel fortunate for the Petsmart in my area. The fish manager actually knows fish! He’s steered me away from poor stalking choices, helped me when my mystery snails hatched…. And he lets me rescue the nearly dead bettas- I take them home and if I can save them, I rehome to a knowledgable (or willing to learn the way of the fish keeper).

Pancakes owner was caught doing some sus things. It's been a while since I saw, so I don't remember the details, but he was accused of swapping out Pancake for another crab and buying multiple lobsters with the goal of housing them together/ with Pancake. Which would end with the biggest lobster eating the others. He was bad about ignoring advise left in the comment section. Last I saw he just... stopped posting, so I imagine things didn't end too well.
If you want to see a quality grocery store rescue I recommend checking out Leo the Lobster.

As a dumpster diver I can say I've found so much money saving items, from said pet stores. Tanks, decorations, lights, seasonal stuff, pet costumes, leashes and collars, bags of food nearing expiration date, or returned. *always check for recalls and the specific code number and states the recalls are in cause most stores unanimously just toss even if they aren't part of the recall.
I haven't found anything dead or alive in my years, though have seen a small handful of videos from years ago with the occasional fish or small pet rescue. I don't trust the modern tic toks about this. Especially a full on case.
I can give 2 explanations as to how this could happen though... 1- shipment overstock and rather than find and make place on the displays the tossed the case as it's a tax write off, and more likely the filmers are employees who went back.
2- same scenario only actual divers came up on it wether employees wanted to go back for it or not.
I've found cases of things elsewhere so it doesn't really shock me to anyone that may question them being tossed in the case as is.

@@cottoncandyjellybean8539 thank you for helping keep things out the landfills!! I know all about not being able to dive your place of employment but going at night makes that easy. I'm more of a early evening diver because my double astigmatisms make night driving a pain, and i have elevated anxiety for who knows why driving or being in a car at night.

    • @ItsLaurenE
      @ItsLaurenE 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

@@FishForThought if you do just double check if it's legal where you are and any surrounding areas you'd dive. For instance the state of Illinois yes it's legal, though some counties or towns may have their own regulations. Usually they don't so you want to know what might make it go from being legal to not... if the dumpster is on the brick wall of the building and there is a sign specifying no trespassing it's not worth it. Dumpsters a few feet from said building are basically fair game sign or not, the dumpster itself isn't property of the store, rather the company that makes the dumpster.
If the dumpster has a no trespassing sticker on it that's to your discretion usually stores will order the sticker for the dumpster to keep people out. Not to be confused with the stickers that say Do not enter and have little saftey cartoon signage.
If the dumpster is locked certainly don't bother opening it. I've seen people pry the lid from under a lock bar, if caught it is considered breaking and entering.
In and out, be respectful, don't leave a mess.

We have a petsmart that is awful to Bettas. The Petco here at one point had hundreds of Bettas in cups. I asked what happened and they said it was a computer glitch that was just auto ordering them hundreds each week and it went on for a month. I wonder if a similar thing happened to the store mentioned and they were tired of feeding so many extra bettas so they just tossed them? It makes me super sad to see these videos with fish dumped in the dumpsters. It's so cruel.

Betta cups always have the blue water when they get to the store, that box is a brand new shipment, which really tells me it's either a complete accident, or the whole thing is fake. You don't even see a dumpster in the video, just the inside of a box. It could happen if there's someone not doing their job properly, but PetSmart does not generally throw away live betta fish for any reason.

The petsmart near me actually doesnt have betta fish on display and you need to consult a worker if you want to buy one. Its good that they’re not just letting anyone pickup a fish anymore. I havnt asked so I dont know if the workers are actually asking for requirements and questioning people who want to buy a betta whether or not they have the right equipment, but its better than just letting anyone take a fish.

Kyoto Bamboo Forest: it’s not as zen as the photos make it look. As per usual, most of those hugely popular tourist attractions are so overrun with tourists that when you’re there it’s nowhere near as deserted as the Pinterest photos make it look. Kinda like whenever I see photos of someone viewing the Mona Lisa by themselves - yeah, never in your life would you ever not get elbowed out of the way if you aren’t someone rich or famous or filming a movie. The only photo I was able to take of myself in front of the bamboo without a stranger in the pic was when I pointed the camera up and took a glamour shot of my flaring nostrils and my chins. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Surprisingly, we found ourselves alone for a few moments while walking through those red arches at one of the many famous Kyoto temples.
My absolute favourite (and surprising, to me) stops during our month long Japan trip was Hiroshima. In particular, the memorial museum. A truly moving and memorable experience. The city itself was really lovely. Didn’t have the crowded and overly touristy vibes of Kyoto, Tokyo or Osaka. The locals were so incredibly friendly, the food was AMAZING (had the best soba and sobayaki there). Had a lot of personality. Left the city feeling very grateful and humbled.

The blue water shows that’s a fresh stock of betta so either these people bought all the bettas or work there ooooor the box was to close to the junk boxes and a worker didn’t think of checking it. Though most petsmart get a compact dumpster that stays locked so idk how they’d get them from the dumpster but there’s my guesses.

Petsmart & Petco claim they will adopt out sick or “damaged” fish but it really depends which store you go to. About a month ago I tried to do just that with a Betta that only had one eye. I found a “supervisor” and asked them if I can adopt it out. It was a hard NO. They were incredibly rude and did not want to have a conversation about it so they grabbed the fish container and walked away. I came back the next day to look for more plants and the fish was back on display. Still was told they don’t permit adopting out and they took the fish away and left it sitting on the station in the fish department. Another employee said they write it as a loss because it’s easier than adopting it out

The fathead minnows (aka rosy reds) tend to use the bottom half of a tall tank... when that free tank (having been through several owners, various critters, and a lizard who couldn't find their crickets in so LORGE an enclosure) leaked, I got a 29 gal, wider and lower, and the fatheads use the bottom 2/3. They seem to know that going to the top exposes you to predators. They're a native fish here on the east coast US.
In the pond, they school with the comet goldfish and seem to have learned to come to the surface... but the goldfish have learned to come up fast and then dive back down at warp ten...
    Nobody having us for lunch!
Fish built like streamlined rockets are... literally... streamlined. I watched wild fatheads (or related minnows) in a fast moving stream and they have no trouble swimming against the current... a current I can barely walk against.
