Cheap 3D Printer - Anet A8: Upgrades, Experience & Thoughts

  • This kit has become a very capable machine with only a handful of modifications costing around £175 inc filament. It completely blows my first gen Prusa i3 printer kit out of the water.
    The Instructions were clear and the kit was well made. A build like this would be very daunting for a first-time buyer but the £139.99 price tag makes taking the leap of faith so soooo worth it!
    So far I have only used PLA but I will try ABS shortly. I haven’t really talked about the prints that I have done yet so I will probably release a short video about them before I get round to doing the episode on my 3d printer enclosure that I mentioned at the end of this video.

    Finally, this video is getting old and there are probably much newer and more cost effective models out there.

      I thumbs down on this video not because of the content value, which I believe is of high value but because of the way it was presented. You crammed 30+ minutes of comprehensible very valuable info in less than 10 minutes. SLOW DOWN!!!!! Unless your targeted audience is only long time experienced kit builders of whom have probably already solved those situations you described. You need to label the video "NOT FOR BEGINNERS".
      I mean no disrespect, just constructive critic.

    Hi... I just wanted to say thanks as you've saved me a lot of hassle on a number of occasions related to the wiring up of the inductive sensor. I would say it was around 2017 when I bought my Anet A8 and started to upgrade it. Since then, I've moved onto a Ramps 1.4 and have had to come back to this video to revise the wiring. So here I am again for the same reason as I have now built my own i3 machine with a larger build volume. So thanks again and all the best. D

    I purchased my Anet A8 about 7 years ago ,well last year there were additional cracks in the front and rear support pieces and I said that is enough ,I disassembled the entire unit ,then ordered new alum profile material and using the motors, 1 lead screw and some parts used on the Ender machine I built a single arm printer that will carry a bed 300 by 300 mm and with the new z axis profile, aZ height of 250mm can be achieved and yes I did replace the mother board with a Ramps board after reassembly and getting all the belts and roller carriages assembled and installed ,I turned it on and the testing and reprograming of the Ramps board began ,It took 3 weeks of 5 hourrs daily ,Now this machine resembles a TRON XY1 only 2.5 times bigger and it works fantastic it is mounted on a piece of 3/4 inch (18.5mm) Russian Birch and the display ,power supply ,Ramps Arduino mega and heated bed controller mounted on a 6 inch (150mm) by 1/4 inch (6mm) plywood Well it runs beautiful ,smooth as ice and my prints are fantastic much better than I use to get .

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liangshi Xu How come? I would argue that the belts have a finite life anyway but it is better to prolong the wiring as that would be a bigger job to replace it all. That said I've already had to replace my belts and fix a couple of broken wires and that was whilst using cable chains, so I guess you are right. They look cooler though, you cannot deny that ;)
      Thanks for watching!

    Just bought one on ebay in the UK; they are cheap as chips at £79 in 2020. Some corners have been cut but it still prints pretty reasonable. The H plate is replace with a piece of plywood, and I have already ordered an aluminium alloy one off banggood as I am sure it will break at some point.

    Hi Fred, I've been trying to install the auto-bed levelling sensor using the same setup as yours, but I'm having a few issues.
    The sensor seems to work when I power the printer on, the red LED is constantly on and when it comes into contact with metal, the LED turns brighter (which I assume is a good thing).
    However, when I set it to auto-home, the Z axis does not move down like it usually does (until it hits the switch), but it moves up a bit. Although when I auto-homed the printer with a piece of metal under the sensor, the Z axis moved down, like it should do. So the sensor is acting in an opposite way to what it needs to.
    I believe that it's been wired up correctly with a 10k ohm resistor connected to the base of the transistor and the signal wire of the probe and the same transistor has been used.
    I initially thought that the NPN polarity of the transistor was incorrect, so I switched them around but the problem still occurs.
    Images are here: imgur.com/a/wO0u9
    Perhaps the software can be tweaked to work in the opposite way it needs to? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Just subbed and liked! very informative and some neat ideas compared to the way I've seen a lot of others configuring their upgrades. I especially like the duel z limits, via switch and bed sensor. Looks like you have a good grasp on the electronics end of things. Nice production value as well with the animations illustrating what you're describing, such as the filament pull for color change. Keep it up! perhaps you'd consider a future video showing any capabilities of the stock power supply powering any add-ons such as LED lights or extra fans for cooling said power supply or main board? I know most people suggest upgrading to an atx computer power supply, which I will probably do soon after receiving my own A8 (ordering one soon), but since you know electronics, I'd be interested to see what the capabilities or shortcomings of the stock power supply are. Can't wait to see what's next! :) Thank you for your insight.

    • @djgoku5496

      One more thing I've seen that I was curious about is one user who wired his z motors parallel. Maybe you could look into this as well and see if there are any true benefits? In theory I guess it would be a good thing, in order to keep z axis motors in perfect sync with one another, but since I don't have the Anet circuit board in hand yet I can't tell if the plugs for those motors are already parallel circuits on the board or if signal is sent independently to each. Thoughts?

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Thanks for your nice words! I must admit the animations were to fill in the gaps between footage that I had not captured but I'm glad that they went down well.
      I would recommend that you stay away from an ATX power supply and instead get a purpose built 12V 30A SMPS like this one: (its an amazon affiliate link btw amzn.to/2nXGWpw). I think you could run another amp or two on the existing PSU, which would power a couple decent LEDs but it does get pretty hot without that so you may want to bare that in mind. Also, if you do get said PSU, you will need to move the supply voltage switch to the correct position for your region.
      I just took a look at the Anet A8 Main board and the Z motors are already in parallel. You will be able to tell when you get your one by the fact that turning one motor turns the other. I'm pretty sure they do this to skimp on parts and not to keep them in sync.
      Thanks again and all the best with your printer,
      Fred :-)

    When I purchased my 2017 Anet A8 with the 1.5 board later in the year it came with a half .5kg roll of filament. Which is good, because I ordered ABS filament with the printer and was seriously disappointed to find out I couldn't print with ABS right after building. So the few of us that got lucky with a half roll of filament were able to march on. I saw the cutout in the foam when you unpacked where the roll of filament should have been. Could have been your distributor taking the spools out and splitting them up.

    Awesome video! I have just one question. I am going to use a capacitive sensor (because I am using glass) more specifically the LJC18A3-H-Z/BX. Will the wiring (resistor and transistor) be the same as you show? Thank you! And I'm waiting for the new video on the Anet A8 ;)

    You should do a video on some saftey upgrades. These printers have a tenancy to, well, combust. You only need a mosfat upgrade and maybe a new psu but that's not necessary.

    Great video. Recently ordered a adhesive surface for my A8 recently and can't wait to see how it prints without gaffer tape. I recently have a new issue with my printer however. It freezes mid print for a few seconds and then resumes, causing the print to be ruined. Is antivirals software the culprit?

      @SolidGroundElectronics  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Daniel,
      Thank you!
      Ah nice, you will appreciate not having to replace the tape every print.
      I never print from the USB anymore because my pc sometimes restarts. I would try printing directly from the sd-card.
      When I had my first gen prusa i3 the print would pause for a second between movements whilst multi-tasking or heavy loads. I assume it will be governed by your PC. Anti-virus is also another option, so you could try disconnecting from the internet, disabling your anti-virus temporarily to find out.
      Kind Regards,
      Fred.

    Curious. A lot of people suggest dropping skynet and going with the most current version of Marlin. Although you lose auto bed leveling because Marlin is larger than 128k that is the on board memory of the anet a8? Solutions?

    one question please .what is the main feature of a 3d printer that determines what and how many materials can this printer use ?For example Anet A8 supports nylon or wood while the A6 model doesn't , what is that makes that difference?Great vid thanks keep up

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, I believe its mostly down to the hotend itself. Some extrudes have a low friction plastic lining inside that can melt at temperatures close to those needed for certain materials. You can replace the hotend but if you use a more powerful one, i.e one that has been designed for higher temperatures you may find that you need a better power supply and external mosfet. I'm not expert though.
      Thanks for your comment :-)

    Hi, great video! I have the same printer and its absolutely great. If you use Simplify3D you can easily change colors by using different gcodes. For example stop the first print at a specific high and then with a new gcode and a new color you can start the print again at a specific high. By the way how have you done the animation/visualization in your video?

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      Thank you!
      I will check out simplify 3d soon. I have a couple of videos to make first though, so watch the space.
      I create the animations by creating multiple title cards and using key frames to either move them around or crop them over time. It is quit involved so I am looking for an alternative.
      Kind Regards,
      Fred

    Hello,i have anet a8 too.I dont have a bed leveling sensor,intead i installed Z axis limit switch a its done just the same work.No need level bed every time.Instaled masking tape is very low quality.I use a high quality for a 2$ only and works well,sticks perfect and no need to to order some cover on heated bed ad cleaners.Btw the tape i using,lasts until first puting on to this day (I printing 24/7,2 months).My opinion is some "upgrades" is not critical.But theZ level yes.Cheers

    are you going to be printing the enclosure, because I'm also looking to quiet the printer. might even go with polymer bushings because the metal linear bearings cause alot of noise.

    Hey Fred, I've really enjoyed your Anet A8 videos so far and I hope you make more in the future! I'm thinking about ordering one for myself, but I have a few questions about the printer (and the purchasing experience) that I hope you don't mind answering.
    How long did it take for the printer to arrive? (from the day it was ordered to the day it arrived)
    Did you have to pay any VAT/import fees when it arrived?
    Did the printer come with an EU or UK plug? If it was an EU plug, what did you do to make it work with a UK plug socket?
    Do you recommend making the belts looser when installing them, so a belt tensioner can also be installed after? (I'm worried that if I make them too loose, I won't be able to print the tensioner in the first place)
    Does the price of a filament always indicate the quality of the filament and how well it prints? Or is it okay to buy a cheap roll of filament from eBay, which would work just as well as a branded roll of filament?
    Thank you for reading and I look forward to your response!

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey BenjiManCan, thanks for your comment. I think it took about 2 weeks at the most. Can someone else confirm r deny this!
      I didn't have to pay customs.
      The EU plug included with the EU version was no use so I used a 13A IEC cable (3 pin kettle lead) with a 5A fuse.
      You do need to leave excess belt but you don't need to make it loose just leave a long tail when you connect it to the extruder head and build platform. You can fold/tuck it out the way and use some tempory zip ties to hold it in place. I would get some fiber reinforced gt2 (8mm i think?) belts as mine stretched and started skipping a single tooth which made the pulley have a variable diameter as it turned.
      I can't comment on the filament side of things as I have only ever used the dark grey pla linked in the description. What I can say is when I used cheap ABS on my janky, ebay prusa I3 (whoes parts I sourced from many suppliers) it would bubble when water from the air that had been absorbed into it would turn to steam. I have since ordered some esun pla for my up coming CR-10 video so that will give me a chance to compare filaments.

    Would you say the auto bed leveling is essential? Even for someone who isn't adept with electronics i ordered my Anet a8 the other day and I'm a little anxious about doing a mod like that in case something would break

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, Thanks for watching!
      It isn't essential but I would recommend doing it if you understand how to wire it up.
      Just make sure that you get the right parts otherwise the wiring guide may not be accurate.
      I would definitely test the printer without any mods first though, just to make sure that the parts in your kit are all working.
      Kind Regards,
      Fred

    where can i find the mount for the bed leveler sensor?

  • @keithrea7059
    @keithrea7059 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    have you had any issues with the inductive sencor? when I run my printer it preheats the bed then homes and then runs the auto bed leveling but if the bed is hot it seems to read the bed inconsistently causing it to to read to high or low. it even changes the hight slightly when running the print back to back

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not had such issues. Have you definitely set up the g-code correctly before exporting the g-code and double check that the mechanical switch is not being triggered before the sensor is. Try putting something metal on one half of the bed whilst it performs the multi-point mesh leveling just to see the system working correctly.
      Are you doing mesh bed leveling. This is far better than taking a single reading in the middle of the bed. You may find that the height isn't changing between prints it just looks that way because you are printing in a different areas of a warped bed. Just an idea.
      How are you powering your sensor? If you under power the sensor ( like other youtubers have shown to be possible) you may find that the effectiveness varies with temperature.
      Is your sensor mount secure? You may find that your bracket has began to droop if it was printed with PLA, especially if you use it over a very hot bed for long periods of time.
      I have only needed to adjust the printer once or twice after moving it around but for the most part it just works straight away. Just keep at it and your printer will be honed to perfection

    Thanks so much for the vid!! Would you recommend buying new belts? as mine ar a bit too short and seem to be causing issues printing circles.

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problemo, more to come in a couple of weeks time. Not really sure if I'm honest. The belts in the kit do get slightly longer after tensioning them for the first time but do hold their tension after that initial change of length. What kind of issues?

    • @marcusthorpe2000
      @marcusthorpe2000 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply! the issue is that the circles seem to print more square than a circle, such that they won fit the screws they were designed for.

    • @SolidGroundElectronics
      @SolidGroundElectronics  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That sounds weird. If you hold the pulley stationary can you move the head / bed. The belt may not be tight enough. That said, it would have to be really droopy to make squares. Do they slide easily without the belts? Also, have you had a look at the trouble shooting guide on the SD card (within the instructions folder).
