During the pandemic. They had an excellent deal on Desert Runners. I went all the way to Missouri to grab it. I dont think any trucks will ever be below 25k, ever again. Great truck for the money. My friend said its small. I said, yep, and small money goes a long way with a good truck.
I have a 2014 Frontier SL and let me tell you, this truck is indestructible. Super reliable, always ready to go, and has never failed me once. I will not own another truck ever again
Same here. Bought a new 2012 roughly 10 years ago been a tank. Owned 4 Toyotas before that. The Nissan has been just as good if not better. My next truck will also be a Nissan
I had a 2012 Tacoma and now I have a 2016 Frontier. The Nissan is better in literally every way. Way more power. More comfortable seats. Ride is better. Feels slightly smaller and seems easier to park. It's terrific off-road. I like the brakes better. Sounds better too.
What I loved about the Frontier and old skool Ranger was they ignored the auto magazine(before utube kids) reviews that poo pooed them for not having the latest wiz bang technology every year. They restyled fenders every few years but essentially kept building the same trk for 20yrs. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Those era small Japanese trucks back in the 70s were wild. They rigged them like an airplane with double ignition points at least in some cases and were they powerful. Pre electronic that dual ignition was a leap ahead. Also the Japs unlike US makers got a waiver on all the bulky crappy pollution gear that made other models look like they name out of Frankensteins lab.
My father had one too. Learned to drive in it. He tortured it with massive loads and the tiny engine never stopped. It had about a foot of play in the shifter but still worked.
My 98 Frontier only came with the 4banger. Lasted to 275,000 miles b4 the timing CHAIN started rattling. Got that fixed, right away and made it another 50,000 miles br I sold it -running. Brought home tons and tons of rocks and gravel and construction supplies.
We have a 2014 4.0 V6 frontier with 190k miles on it! Basic truck with no bells and whistles. Bought it with 175k miles and did a lot of preventative maintenance and it’s been reliable. Gas guzzler but reliable
I towed the same 4000 pound travel trailer with an ‘11 Frontier and an ‘11 4Runner. Both are equipped with the V6. Both well within their towing capabilities. I would take the Frontier for towing any day. I figured the 4Runner would be decent, but I was completely unimpressed. I paid $13k for the Frontier and $21k for the 4Runner.
As a 05 Xterra owner, I can tell you the exhaust bolts will be frozen in place with rust. Same with the control arm bolts. Afraid of radiator failures, causing a mix with trans fluid? Just replace the radiator before it fails. Be proactive.
Frontiers from 2005 to 2010 the radiator brakes and contaminated the transmission! It happened to mine and got the tranny rebuild for $4,500.00, cats go bad too! I sent you multiple messages asking you to tell people about it 7 years ago! Nissan only extended the warranty to 100k, but usually the damage happens after that!
I can agree, I own a frontier and I’ll be the first one to admit that there not the prettiest things but man there are amazing trucks, and it just gets the job done. Witch is what you want from any vehicle, especially a truck
I own one, good truck. Some had defective radiators that destroyed transmissions so check if you own or buy one. Overall I am happy. Full box frame truck I tow a camper with.
The Frontiers before 2015 were amazing value. I had a 2006 that ran like a Swiss clock and was only 21K brand new! The greedy corporations like Nissan and Toyota are no longer building super quality trucks for an affordable price. That being said, I did buy a new Tacoma last march for only 29K but it was the most basic trim package you can get.
The 2nd generation Tacoma built the reputation that Toyota is living off of. The 3rd generation Tacomas are dogs with that power train. The older Frontiers with 4 cylinder and 5 speed manuals were very reliable.
"Corporations being all corporationy" For some reason auto makers have to keep adding "features" which raises the price of vehicles to the point where (we) all have to finance them. Those "features" are mandated are they not? Why don't you get mad at the legislators that you voted for???
I guess you don't understand inflation. At 2.5% inflation $21,000 in 2006 would be $30,414 in 2021. The problem is not greedy corporations but ignorant people who can't do math and probably vote for those who make inflation worse (around 8.5% under the current administration).
I have a 2012 Nissan Titan Pro4x I bought new and I can say it’s the best truck I’ve ever owned. In the ten plus years I’ve had this truck I’ve only had normal repairs with the exception of the transfer case going out at under 10,000 miles which Nissan replaced at no cost. I’ve had brakes and rotors changed once, a new exhaust system and both front wheel bearing and hub assemblies at about 90,000 mikes. The truck has nine years in New Hampshire with zero rust or rattles and the first light burned out this year, a fog light. My previous truck, a 2008 Silverado was a pos that rattled and rusted. GM was the worst at customer service while Nissan has been outstanding. Never again with a GM rust bucket! And have you ever noticed three out of five Silverado’s have burned out headlights. I’ll stick with Nissan or Toyota.
Every review I've ever seen on the Frontier always mentions how dated the styling is. So, thanks to Scotty for not bringing that up. Personally, I think they are one of the best-looking trucks on the road. I don't care that much about how sheet metal is bent on a pick-up. I care about performance and reliability. My 08 never left me on the side of the road and neither has the 16.
I went from an '00 2.7L/auto PreRunner to an '09 4.0L/4WD/MT Frontier. Loved my Tacoma but the comfort/performance/solid ride and feel of my Frontier is great. The seats in the Tacoma were really tough on my back on drives of an hour or more. It's the '70's/'80's all over again Scotty. Toyota and Datsun.
As great as the Tacomas are, the biggest problem with them is a seat that is barely off the floorboards. The Frontier seats are much better positioned and very comfortable. Rear seats are not so special.
@@Handsomemangame still original on engine and tranny. Keep changing oil at 4,000 miles and tranny oil every other year with original Nissan matic s fluid. I’ll get close to 1,000,000 with regular maintenance on this Nissan VQ-40DE power train. Super reliable with frequent oil changes.
I have hte same truck 2013 model in 2WD, 215,000 miles. It was a really good truck at first, but now with new shocks/struts, helper springs on the rear, and Load rating E tires all around, it is a GREAT truck and perfect for me.
Had one Datsun and two Nissans, the R31 a top car, but hands always in pocket. My Parents had a 1984 Nissan 720 1.8 LTR Dual Cab. Over 500K klicks, only brakes, a clutch, tyres, an exhaust and service charges. Must have been a Wednesday make :).
where i am, we still get the hardbody, with modern turbo diesels though, very few v6, just started bringing out the frontier/navara facelift to make them look modern like toyota hilux or isuzu dmax
Bough a 2014 used and love it. Put 70,000 miles on it. Changed oil, transmission, radiator antifreeze and it hums along very well. It is a mid-size truck and could tow 6500 pounds, better than a Chevy half ton (6100). I have towed up to about 4500 with no issues. It is 2 we, and generally get about 18 mpg in city. I once got 27 mpg on real gas at 75 mph. Travelled all over western US and really like it. Wish I could have gotten it for $1, but it is still worth 75% of what I paid for it.
My old F-150 has a 4.2l V6 and shows running lean on both banks. My mechanic told me not to worry about it. I bought a scan tool to make sure that's the only thing that triggers the check engine light, and then clear it. It takes over 400 miles for the light to come on sometimes. Sometimes... it's about 150 miles.
I have a 2003 Desert Runner XE with 142,000 miles on it. It’s perfect & only problem it had was a smog situation, it needed a wiring harness wire added to it & it’s fine! I love my truck in electric ocean blue, aem cold air induction with KN cone filter, custom magnaflow exhaust, method wheels & KO2 BF Goodrich 31.5’s. It’s an awesome beautiful sport truck! ❤️🥳
We had a White Extended Cab 1989 Nissan pickup with the four cylinder and the five speed manual. Drove it 245,000 miles. Sold it with a front main seal leak and the guy I sold it to drove it another two years. Replaced the clutch at 180,000 miles. Never had any other problem other then the seal. Great running , driving and looking truck. My wife loved to drive that truck.
Just don't get a Frontier from the mid 2000's seals in the radiator fail, antifreeze mixes with the transmission fluid and transmission goes by-by. Get the ones I think around 09' or newer with a separate transmission cooler. My 2015 has been bulletproof no issues just turned 75K
I had a 2010, and I received an extended warranty because it was an issue on those as well. I'm not sure how far up the model years went with the issue.
Not sure if Nissan has changed but when the radiators were failing they would rather give buyers $300 to buy a new car rather than replace defective radiators. Many owners on their own. Shortsighted thinking. To this day I don't trust the company.
The "SMOD" (strawberry milkshake of death) it was called. Problem was limited to automatics but yeah. I sure didn't write off Tacomas when the frames were breaking in half from poor corrosion protection.
i believe so , i have one only problem 2018 had electrical issues. from wet weather. but engine/trans runs fine. gone into 3rd set of new tires. but normal wear. its a truck , yup that what you get for the MPG. but doesn't bother me, pay when you use it as you go. no bells and whistles on techology just all same ol' truck difference is the raido/cd player
Frontier's are good trucks but you probably wont see a bunch running around with over 300k on original engine like the Tacoma's. But you can pick them up way cheaper. Also I like to correct Scotty again. There is a 4 banger Frontier with over a million miles that is still running. Nissan bought it back from the guy that owned it.
Hey Scotty, since they bought the truck for a buck ($1), that was 90 cents years ago-not a dollar five ($1.05). Inflation means it costs more now for the same item than it did years ago. 😅 Love your videos; I’m a faithful fan.
Had a 2002 Nissan Frontier with 4 banger and standard tranny. Was a workhorse of an engine. I think we sold it with like 356k miles on it. MINIMAL problems. Definitely got the bang for our buck with that truck.
My parents had a 6 cylinder Frontier that had 250,000 miles when they traded it in. They changed the brakes, tires, and batteries of course besides some very small basics nothing major ever had to be done to the truck. They even hauled a small camper trailer every now and then. My dad was amazed he had never seen anything like it.
I have had 1 Frontier (4 cyl), and 2 Xterras (V6 4.0). All of them have delivered mail. The little truck has 240,000 miles on it, (and who knows how many hours of running time.) and it still will run. It just needs a new MAF sensor and a complete suspension replacement. I image it would still kick up to 300,000. As for the Xterras. I wrecked the first at 113,000, and I am driving the second at 134,000 miles. They are dependable little trucks, but I will say I do routine Oil and filter changes, as well as replacing transmission fluid periodically. I won't lie, I have done a LOT of repair work on my Nissan trucks, but that's the nature of driving for 8 hours a day on rough dirt roads. If they can put up with all that I can only imagine what one could do on solid highway miles.
It's pretty simple: the (CVT) transmissions on (horizontal) FWD Nissan autos are not the same as the transmissions on traditional/vertical REAR wheel drive or even 4WD trucks.
I have a 2008 Nissan Frontier with 160,000 miles on it have never had to do anything but change the oil and do preventative maintenance. It's a great truck
Don’t go knocking on the 4 bangers! Have a 2003 XL 2WD 2.4L with a manual transmission. It’s my second one. Bought it 13yrs ago with 88k miles. Currently has 196k miles. She’s a beast here in Ohio in all 4 seasons.
2017. The next owner will be the scrap yard. That'll be a long, long time from now. Nephew has first dibs after I'm dead. Probably pass to his first born. Great truck.
My first truck was a 2012 frontier and I put it through hell. Went over 50k miles once without changing oil. Got it under 100k miles and totaled it out in a wreck at just over 300k miles. I bet it’d still be running today if I still had it
The D40 diesels did have issues with the timing chains though which could be upgraded to a dual width chain if you did the job before it broke. Also the frames sooner or later rusted off behind the cab in-front of the rear wheels, think I welded my work truck frame three times. Replaced a lot of ABS sensors too, since when they broke the vehicle refuses to engage 4-wheel drive.
Just hope that the timing chains don't start rattling, the tensioners are failing and will require a lot of work to replace, and good luck with the after market tensioner kits, they are as bad as the factory tensioners,
My 2004 Toyota Tacoma has 192,000 on it but man the trip from 188885 to the 192,000 cost me plenty of bucks almost $4000, first thing was the passenger door handle, you could open the door from the inside but not the outside, 1st try found broken plastic door handle, 2nd try (year later) found door latch bad, then an Oxygen sensor, about $200, then a speed idle sensor $895, then a ABS sensor $295, then since I bought the Truck used, I decided to do an Oil Change Wal mart Synthetic and their most expensive oil filter $40, then while I was at it ordered 4 new spark coils and new plugs, and just as I thought they where never changed, back cylinder in my 2.4 liter engine the Spark Plug was like frozen in got it out by tapping but the spark plug hole needed to be re threaded. $40 for the re thread, and about $500 for the new coils and plugs. Then of course new tires and brakes. Now the Tacoma seems to be running like new, and on a long trip to Jersey City I got 22 mpg. Now I only paid a low price for this truck and now I know why. If I was to sell it today I would probably ask $6000.
The last time I checked (2 or 3 yrs ago), the modern dollar is worth four pennies when compared to the dollar of 1913. Why 1013? That was the year th Federal Reserve Bank went into operation.
I have a 2011 Nissan Pathfinder with 89,000 miles. Runs great , tranny and dif fluid was never changed Should I change it or leave it? What do you guys think? I had a new radiator installed in 2015 when I bought the truck with 19k miles on it. Never had fluids mix. Thank goodness
Instead of the costly new battery technology of space age, go with the older technology of this truck and save some on the cost, too beside the reliability.
I found this interesting. I've had 2 Nissan Xterera's which are basically the same thing but with a enclosed body. The engine needs a timing chain change ever 75k and it's not a cheap job to have done. The first Xterra gave me nothing but aggro with the air /fuel codes despite me replacing the sensors etc. The second one I had was the predecessor to the pro4X version. It ran fine for a year and then I started noticing a strange noise from the passenger rear wheel. I took my son to a gaming tournament that was about a 90 min drive from where we lived. When we drove home it started lashing it down with rain and the noise was really evident. I was driving in the dark, in the rain, when the passenger side rear end went out on me. I was in the overtaking lane at the time. I managed to keep the car on the road and pulled over. I got out and got soaked and looked at the rear wheel. It was only still there because of the wheel arch. Because the rain was so bad and I didn't have a decent light I called a friend to pick us up and left it on the shoulder. The next day I got a lift to go change the wheel and drive it home. When I went to change the tyre, I noticed that all 6 wheel bolts had sheared. I couldn't put the spare on so I called to have it towed. When I got home, I realised just how lucky we had been. If it hadn't been for the wheel catching the arch and keeping us upright, we could have been seriously injured or killed. I'm now paranoid about sounds coming from a car now and I will never by a Nissan ever again.
I was looking at a 2004 Nissan Pick up truck about 3 months ago, they wanted $15,995 for it body was great and so was interior, but not as good as my 2004 Taco.
Rust? I had one of these trucks too, bought it for like $500 and fixed up a few issues. Ran great and 4wd worked perfect. Problem is I live in Western New York and literally the body looked liked Swiss cheese and everything underneath was an unidentifiable mass of rust you couldn't touch. I drive all my cars until rust makes them unsafe and it's rare to get much over 200k miles with road salt around here.
I live in nh, we use salt on the roads and pur cars don't rust out like that if you wash them. In the winter....there are a lot of cars and trucks with well over 200k, my wife had an orange 09 Honda fit 5 SPD that wasnt rusted out with like 205k sport that she sold recently BC she wanted something bigger and 4 WD, .so she got a 14 escape titanium , with the 2.0 ecoboost. It has no rust.
when it comes to truck, at least here in europe, japanese brands (mitsubishi, nissan and toyota) simply do not have any competition. obviously here they're all diesel, don't think I've ever seen a petrol one.
Scotty have you done a video on the new frontier I like it for the real transmission & old school power steering but I'd like to hear what you think before I consider it more seriously as it may have a hidden flaw or 2 that no one else talks about I know you call it like ya see it
I love coming home after a long day at the office and watching some SCOTTY videos! Thank you sir for all you do and the information you give. Thank you for your reliable upload schedule. :)
I got 202k on my 2012 sl 4x4. Sunroof. Heated seats. Stereo with subwoofer under rear seat. The pro4x’s also get a push button electric rear diff lock for the 4x4! They are great and cheap. Put some falken wildpeak at3w and it’s good year round snow too.

I also have a 05 Xterra. 269,782 on her
The man felt the need to explain what a CD player is 😒😒😒
Scotty,
you're a gem ✌️✌️✌️
Even the 2019 version looks like this and still drives like a dream!
I like the Chevy s10 better than the frontier but both are great trucks 🤙
Same parts as the Xterra. I have owned 2 Xterras and hated having to get rid of them. I prefer them over Toyota trucks.
T O Y O T A 😊
I have a 2003 Desert Runner XE with 142,000 miles on it. ❤️🥳
I love when the little owl pops up when Scotty's laughing 😂
This is an OG mechanic for real. I don’t trust anyone else.
Hardbody !
Spot on with those issues mine had most and changed my mind about Nissan forever
Not sure if Nissan has changed but when the radiators were failing they would rather give buyers $300 to buy a new car rather than replace defective radiators. Many owners on their own. Shortsighted thinking.
To this day I don't trust the company.
2005 - 2007 are worst.
A coworker of mine had a 4wheel drive one that went well over 300,000 miles, mostly hiway of course.
I’m amazed with these $1 vehicles purchases 🚘
Relative
@@genefoster8601 When gifting the car somehow costs more.
Gotta 2002 Frontier 4cyl with 306000 and still running strong. Did have transmission rebuilt around 45k before.
I had same truck in a manual. Loved it.
It's funny that I don't even own a car or do any car repair work, but I just like to watch Scotty's video when I am bored.
I watch porn when I'm bored 😅
Awesome video like always scotty👍👍👍
I remember watching my first video on here and the intro ( rev up your engine’s ) then the video starts ( Dont rev up your engines it’s bad ) 😂
In Oakland I see many construction workers using these trucks. Yota also but these seem to have legs.
Contradictory info on the jatco transmissions. Scotty you either like those trans or you dont! which is it? Rev up your inconsistencies!
It's pretty simple: the (CVT) transmissions on (horizontal) FWD Nissan autos are not the same as the transmissions on traditional/vertical REAR wheel drive or even 4WD trucks.
Details - different units for different applications have different designs and build qaulity
I think he means the more recent four bangers. The older ones were great.
2017. The next owner will be the scrap yard. That'll be a long, long time from now. Nephew has first dibs after I'm dead. Probably pass to his first born. Great truck.
3:36 Scotty had me rolling haha
I have a 2011 crew cab with 210k miles,I owned since 2013, they are very affordable to maintain
I've read several instances of antifreeze getting into the transmission fluid inside the radiator on the Nissan V6 Frontier with the automatic????
My Ford Explorer has 209,000 and runs like a top! Interior and paint are like new and it’s 4x4 and everything works!❤
Might be able to get the Suzuki version of this truck for a little cheaper than the Nissan.
My first truck was a 2012 frontier and I put it through hell. Went over 50k miles once without changing oil. Got it under 100k miles and totaled it out in a wreck at just over 300k miles. I bet it’d still be running today if I still had it
You forgot to change oil?
I just bought a 2019 Frontier 4dr V-6 with 71,000 miles. $8,500. I like it.
Really love watching your video keep that energy sir
The D40 diesels did have issues with the timing chains though which could be upgraded to a dual width chain if you did the job before it broke. Also the frames sooner or later rusted off behind the cab in-front of the rear wheels, think I welded my work truck frame three times.
Replaced a lot of ABS sensors too, since when they broke the vehicle refuses to engage 4-wheel drive.
I had a company 2020 Nissan 4x4 PU. Good power, but drank gas like my 2006 Lincoln Mark LT 4x4 that weight 7,000 lbs.
I’ve had two Maximas that have been reliable, and the 3.5L V6 is great
Just hope that the timing chains don't start rattling, the tensioners are failing and will require a lot of work to replace, and good luck with the after market tensioner kits, they are as bad as the factory tensioners,
My 2004 Toyota Tacoma has 192,000 on it but man the trip from 188885 to the 192,000 cost me plenty of bucks almost $4000, first thing was the passenger door handle, you could open the door from the inside but not the outside, 1st try found broken plastic door handle, 2nd try (year later) found door latch bad, then an Oxygen sensor, about $200, then a speed idle sensor $895, then a ABS sensor $295, then since I bought the Truck used, I decided to do an Oil Change Wal mart Synthetic and their most expensive oil filter $40, then while I was at it ordered 4 new spark coils and new plugs, and just as I thought they where never changed, back cylinder in my 2.4 liter engine the Spark Plug was like frozen in got it out by tapping but the spark plug hole needed to be re threaded.
“You know that’s a good idea, aluminum driveshafts”
I think that’s what ford said too isn’t it?
The last time I checked (2 or 3 yrs ago), the modern dollar is worth four pennies when compared to the dollar of 1913. Why 1013? That was the year th Federal Reserve Bank went into operation.
I have a 2011 Nissan Pathfinder with 89,000 miles. Runs great , tranny and dif fluid was never changed
Should I change it or leave it?
What do you guys think?
I had a new radiator installed in 2015 when I bought the truck with 19k miles on it. Never had fluids mix. Thank goodness
I didn't flush just did drain and fill on my 2011 frontier and worked out fine
I had 2 bad cats in my 2011 frontier but other then that it’s been good
Here in New Zealand it's a Navara 2012 had it for 6 years diesel 2.5 litre turbo great truck no problems still worth about 7 k USD great show
Anybody else think Scotty sounds like Bubbles from Trailer Park Boys?
Walmart will install all 4 new tpms sensors for $28.88 each programmed to the vehicle.
Instead of the costly new battery technology of space age, go with the older technology of this truck and save some on the cost, too beside the reliability.
Hey Scotty, On the cost of E.V'S
Please do A show including how much it cost in gas or coal
For a K W of electricity for a E V.
Google and the parts store always tell me to put synthetic trans fluid in a stock trans
That giant sucking sound you hear is all the jobs going to Mexico. (Ross Perot way back when)
I’ve seen some pretty old Nissan p/u’s on the road and running very well.
Last year for trans dip stick:
Toyota Sienna 2010.
Kia Sedona 2014.
Chrysler Town and country/Grand Caravan(easily accessible)2010.
If my timing belt breaks it only breaks the rockers & no other damage. It's not by by engine.
when it comes to truck, at least here in europe, japanese brands (mitsubishi, nissan and toyota) simply do not have any competition.
obviously here they're all diesel, don't think I've ever seen a petrol one.
Scotty have you done a video on the new frontier I like it for the real transmission & old school power steering but I'd like to hear what you think before I consider it more seriously as it may have a hidden flaw or 2 that no one else talks about I know you call it like ya see it
well Scotty, the 4 banger is pretty good when you have a guy who donated his back to Nissan with a million plus miles and he used his for hauling
I remember that. 5 speed manual
My Frontier just turned 12 years old. Only 80K miles and only had to install a new clutch. Best vehicle I've ever owned.
Can make more videos on diagnostics but without the computer. Good ol fashioned tricks?
Taco baby!
I love coming home after a long day at the office and watching some SCOTTY videos! Thank you sir for all you do and the information you give. Thank you for your reliable upload schedule. :)
Who would sell a vehicle first a dollar lol. You can rip catalytic converter out and sell it instantly for 300 bucks just fir converter.
what do you think about ford ranger, 2015-2017 models without the adblue. Should i avoid?? thanks.
Bought a an old 62 Merc for a dollar once. Great car but don't remember the model. Drove it for a year an sold for 100 dollars.
A Comet perhaps , friend had a 64 was dependable.
I recently rented a 2021 Nissan pickup; it was the most uncomfortable vehicle I've ever been in.
I am too. It's called a 94 Celica.
04 ranger. 2.3 4 banger. 359,000 miles on it. Idle pulley and fuel filter went out
Manual ?
Top Hat: Salute to you sir.
