Hi, Tom. I'm your customer with the cherry (IMHO) 2007 silver Tacoma 4X4 access cab, who just sold his grey 2008 Mazda 3s sport for a blue 2017 Passat. I love you guys. I have been a faithful customer since 2009 and recommend you to all my friends with zero regrets. Somehow I figured the Tundra and Titan would round out the top of your list.
Boy, that’s a sweet looking 4Runner back there! Someone has babied that rig for well over 30 years. One more tip I’d add for you guys to consider. If you boil it down to one particular make and model, drive several of them, if possible, and pay attention to the differences. When I bought my last used vehicle, there was one that really stood out as head and shoulders above the others from a driving perspective. But as Tom said, don’t skip the pre purchase inspection though. That saved me once. Thank you, Tom.
Biggest thing for me is rust, I live in the rust belt. I flew to Texas last month and drove my new to me 10 year old rust free truck home. Best tip I have for people. Rust is expensive to fix, not just body components.
I'm in the Northeast and how right you are. The DOT, in trying to reduce the amount of sand they put on the road for traction during the wintertime, is now using chemicals that eat your brake lines. I get the underside of my vehicles Fluid-Filmed.
Hi Tom, sounds like most of the F150's problems are EcoBoost engine related...right? That's why I am looking only at 2015 and newer F150's with the 5.0L V8 Coyote engine and preferably a 6r80 six-speed transmission.
Great video. I have to say though, you probably rank the F-150 as the worst truck on your list simply because it's the most sold truck in the US. Of course you will see more in the shop.
@ ahh sorry I guess that logic doesn’t work with cars wtf was I thinking, I’m not the brightest. Anyways fyi the only 1/2 ton I’d buy is a f150 with 5.0 though, haven’t heard much problems with the 2.7
A F100 or f150 that has a carbed 300 or a chev of the same era with a stovebolt. Bulletproof, maintainable by someone with average mechanical ability, parts are cheap. If you have a spare tire, haywire, some zip ties, basic wrenches, it will get you there no matter how far
I try to buy used fleet trucks at auction. Usually maintained on schedule regardless of the driver, and they get rid of them at 100k miles with 100k miles left if you are willing to do some work yourself.
Lol. They're driven by people who don't own them and maintained to the minimum standards at best. Then there's the idle hours as mentioned. I drive a fleet vehicle 8hrs a day and I'd NEVER consider buying one.
I dunno, but it seems to me that much would depend on the drivetrain in the vehicle. For example... I've not heard a lot good about Fords Ecoboost, but their 5.0 Coyote is a different story.
I have my own OBD port scanner that I use to scan the car myself before I will consider buying it. Sales people get nervous when I do this and it's fun!
Hi Tom, what do you think about the mid size trucks? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks for all your advice, the first section was phenomenal advice!
At 7:28 - would a Ford F-150 move up substantially if it does not use an ecoboost (turbo) engine? I only ask because I'm looking at a 2002 F150 with 4.6 V8 SOHC with 240k miles. My other family cars are Toyota and Honda and I only buy non turbo.

Great info, Tom. I'm thinking about a truck for myself in the near future, and was considering a small (3.0 - 4.0 liter) diesel due to the pulling power and fuel economy. A video that addresses these issues would be great for prospective purchasers (like myself).
Toyotas are reliable but only if you maintain them to the letter or better. A used one would have to have meticulous records of proper maintenance for me to consider buying one.
I'm on my 2nd Silverado and have enjoyed them. However, the new models with the auto start/stop and cylinder deactivation down to 2 cylinders stink. Another thing about the Silverado, although I haven't experienced it, is the rear-end. The owner and chief tech of an axle-repair shop near me says the rear-end of the Silverado's is prone to failures due to the design. He can almost guarantee that you will have a problem with it sooner than later.
Good info to know, I love my Nissan Titan, only problem so far was the starter replacement. Turns out it’s under the intake manifold, smh. Other than that it’s an outstanding vehicle for hauling or sporting
