I'm concerned about the new turbo charged engine. As a general rule they tend to wear out more quickly. I wish they would've given the option of a normal 6- cylinder.
EPA is a cult!
The turbocharger itself is unlikely to last beyond 250k. Second and third owners should expect some expensive repairs if they want to take the odometer to the moon like you could with older Tacos.
As a general rule probably correct, but don't forget over-the-road diesels have turbocharged engines that are expected to go millions of miles, and those engines experience more combustion pressures by far than any gas engine. It's all in the engineering and there's no particular reason a turbo or a turbocharged engine can't last as long as anything else. My own intuition is that maintenance or lack thereof is a big part of their bad reputation, engineering is likely a case-specific second reason, and Scotty Kilmer is the third.
Toyota has had experience with turbos for decades overseas. Diesel engines mostly, but they also create more heat so..

That’s why I bought my 23 Tacoma TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the Premium and Technology pkgs.
At my age this will be the last pickup I’ll ever buy. I only drive 6-8K miles per year and change the oil every 5K miles. I have always changed my front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles and will continue to do so on my current TRD.

The best Tacomas were the ones made in Fremont, California, USA. In the used market, the 4.0 V6 and 2.7 4 cylinder engines are the ones to get. As a Canadian, I object to the term 'Rust Belt' when applied to vehicles. I call the northern USA and Canada the Salt Belt. My car is 19 years old and rust free because it receives quality rustproofing treatment every year. In the Salt Belt rustproofing is just mandatory preventative maintenance in the same way fluid changes are preventative maintenance . Rust = Neglect.
I hope to own a 3rd gen Tacoma one day with a manual with v6. Great information in this video Greg
I've had a 2013 Tacoma as my daily for the past 8 years. So. Damn. Reliable. It is supercharged, tuned and fun as hell to drive! More awesome knowing you don't have a car payment on it!

I'd love to see a video like this for the Tundra.
All Tacomas stemming from 95.5 to 2009 are very sensitive to overheating and known for blown head gaskets. As long as you don’t overheat them they will last a very VERY long time. Also correction to the engine for the first gen. The first two are correct the 3rd was a 5vzfe. I have a 6 cylinder 1995 with 227k miles.
Darn it...I just checked my Tacoma...built in Texas...but with date of 2/17.
Had a 2008 Tacoma V6. Sold it with 388,000 miles. Original engine and transmission.
I purposefully bought my 23 TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the premium and technology pkgs because historically a Turbo engine doesn’t last as long as a naturally aspirated engine.
I change the oil every 5K miles and the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles.
I’m an absolute maintenance nut, only because great maintenance is far cheaper than expensive breakdowns or buying a new vehicle.
I drove my first Toyota for 24 years and when it died in 02 it had 488K miles. I promptly replaced it with a new Camry and drove it until my needs changed in 11 so I bought a new Rav 4WD Limited with the 3.5L V6.
I then decided to buy my 23 Tacoma and sold my Rav to a friend because he knew how well I maintain my vehicles.
I thought the First Generation were rust buckets also. Thanks

? The 1GR 4.0 liters were widely regarded as better suited to the Tacoma than the newer 2GR 3.5s. Better power off the line and quieter.
2GR had only slightly better fuel economy.
If the 2.7L would have produced 200-225 horsepower, I would have bought it instead of the 3.5L V6.
Those 4 bangers are bulletproof.
On another note, if you have a 4WD Toyota, engage the 4WD system at least once a month year round. Just put it into 4WD below 60 mph on a flat road, drive it about a mile and put it back into 2WD and your 4WD system will give you many years of trouble free service.
Walmart screwed up my Taco 09. I changed at Walmart last month, They are out Castro synthetic blend, my taco only take conventional oil only.
*In one year after updates are implemented, BUY A NEW TURBO CHARGER and keep it handy, because the PRICE WILL GO UP* and many people will be replacing these, along with the oil feed line that goes to the TC that lubricates it, BUY BOTH, you always replace both because if the oil line is plugged in anyway, which in many cases is the cause of TC failures, and you put a new 2k TC in and it will burn out again in two months.
I went with buying a 2023 Nissan frontier s I was going to buy a new Tacoma but wasn’t a fan of a 4 cylinder turbo
Even on the 3rd generation Tacoma has weak leaf springs. I will be adding Add a Leaf to the rear of my 23 Tacoma
My uncle just bought a new Tacoma. I don’t know what year his old Tacoma was but he drove the hell out of it and put over 100k miles on it. I need a truck with a V8 engine for towing but don’t want to buy American or a new Tundra. Can you do a video on the Tundras? I hear the new ones are having engine problems.
Check out the “car care nut” channel on utube. He is a master Toyota mechanic he does a break down video of the new tundra flaws. I wish I lived near him. EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE he is!

Any comment on VVT-IE (electronic) vs VVT-I? Are they just as sensitive to oil wear or not as bad since the activation is electronic?
Toyota puts the 4.0 1gr in Land Cruisers around the world to this day. The 2gr 3.5 was used in the Camry and sienna minivan
I purchased a 23 Tacoma with the 2.7, don't want any part of the new turbo engine setup for 2024.
I have 2015 4x4 TRD Tacoma. I am using full synthetic oil every 8000 miles. Do you recommend I only go 5k even with full synthetic oil? Also I’m about to hit 60k miles so you recommend do transmission fluid replacement?
Couple of things I dont agree with. 1st. 4.0 Liters can get respectable mpg, i avg 20.5 combined. Secondly, the seats were much more durable in the 2nd gen than the 1st. Lastly, how could you not talk about the durability questions on the new Tacoma when there have been two that have broken while test driving them, one was a transmission issue andnthe other a front suspension issue. Not to mention the new Tundras are having major issues.
