Hello Scotty and all. This is my car, 2015 Chevrolet Impala light blue car. It got totaled in December 9, 2023 tornado here in Clarksville, TN by a tree that fell on it. I changed the fuel injectors myself using ALLDATA and I smelled no more fuel smell in the car. Car was paid off and life throws us unexpected things, so I am greatful to be here for another day. Still soldiering here at Fort Campbell, KY with 8 years of service.
Michael, I want to buy a used car from a guy like you! I'm glad you made the decision to fix it. You did fall victim to being a shade tree mechanic though. Be safe protecting the country. We appreciate you.
@@P_Petkov Yes, being I bought this car at the age of 20 after coming home from Afganistan in 2017 was a sad day for me, especially when it was towed away.
I bought a 2007 Caddy years ago. It had I think 120,000 miles on it. Interior was like new. Adaptive cruise control and the works. It didn't even make it to the first oil change when the car was totaled in an accident. I wasn't hurt at all. The insurance guy called. Asked about the mileage. It turned out that in Miami the car lost 100,000 miles. Someone rolled it back electronically he said. They also suspected the car had water damage and is why the interior was like new. It was new. The place I bought it from when the investigator showed up was empty. No desks, no chairs, nothing inside. Those guys were long gone. Everybody knew nothing about it. For a car that had 220,000 miles on it, it ran great. I ended up with more money than I paid for the car. Could have been worse. Carfax would have helped me that time.
My father bought a 96 Crown Vic from a big dealer in 98, and we looked that car over closely, and there wasn't so much as a stain or scratch anywhere. 2 yrs later, we received a letter from the state of NJ stating that the car's odometer had been tampered by a criminal ring, and the true mileage was 92,000, and not 27,000 as originally thought. We have been receiving compensation checks yearly since that letter. Point being, is that we thought that we checked that car throughly but were fooled anyway. In spite of it, my parents towed a trailer with that car for years!
Scotty, you're alright. You're down to earth and you have a good moral compass. Thank you for not showing people how to be dishonest. I too am very annoyed when a seller is intentionally dishonest. They say one thing, but they do something else! I wouldn't believe them to do what's right if they have a track record from the get go of being unreliable, telling me one thing and doing something else. Love your videos. Especially your candid style.
Better yet buy from a person you personally know. Got a little beater Honda from my neighbor and don’t regret it . Know the problems and it hasn’t let me down .
This car is proof that most decent cars can last IF, YOU JUST LOOK AFTER THE MAINTENACE!!! Too bad they used crappy injectors.... Still, in Canada that 2000.00 dollar repair bill is peanuts compared to the cost of a used car that still won't pass the safety inspection.
My 2014 impala LT2 went 120k miles without a single issue. Mine wasn't the 4cylinder though. I had the tried and true 3.6 V6. I sold it to buy a new car. However, that Impala was one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned. It also ran like a scalded ape. Fast, good handling, good interior options for the time. I wish they kept making them.
I have a 2001 Chevy Malibu LS with a 3.1 V6 and it has 125,600 original miles and My mother bought the car in 2005 with 62,000 miles on it and when I got the car in 2018 after she passed away the car only had 104,750 miles on it and it runs good but here in Michigan cars get destroyed by salt and the body is good but under is not so good but the motor and trans is still really good shape and burns no oil and its all on how you treat the car and how you take care of it that will make it last. Thanks Scotty for all the great vids and all the years of great knowledge.
Had an Audi S6, left it with the mechanics six times for extreme gasoline smell sometimes. Finally left it with the mechanic said you use it. After two days he called to say we all thought you were crazy and then I smelled the gas. Turns out, the fuel line was sweating gas into the cabin. At first Audie said it was my responsibility. They then went ahead and fixed it no charge.
I worked with a guy who bought a Honda from a dealership. A year later, the cops showed up at work and took his car ... found out. It was stolen ...so even dealerships can be dirty ..😂
On OBDII tester, even a cheaper one, you can check the number of operating hours on the engine. Thieves might mess with odometer, they won't go through the difficulty of changing or flashing the PCM. There are references for average hours for mileage ranges. Operating hours tells you how much work the engine has on it, what if the owner sat idling a lot? Aircraft, for example, do their maintenance based on operating hours.
I had a 96 Pontiac Sunfire 2.2 Liter OHV with 165k miles. It developed a strong gas smell as well with no visible leaks on the ground. I drove it like that for a few years. I was broke back then and couldn't afford to fix it. I sold it for $1000 back in 2/2011, it ran and drove fine like this guys chevy. oddly enough, I had 2/3 of my right lung removed because of a lung tumor and was coughing up blood in 9/2010. Sometimes I wonder if the gasoline smell from that car for several years caused my lung tumor. I was never sick that bad before, I was only 33 years old at the time and almost died on the ventilator. After recovery, now with one good lung left that 96 Pontiac Sunfire had to go. I disclosed the gas smell to the buyer and he bought it. This car in scotty's video made me ponder this.
We owned a Ford escape. After replacing the ABS system 4 times we got rid of it. The garage said that they have tons of problems with them. Friends of mine bought two of them as they liked how they drive. These are new and they have replaced the ABS twice in both of them. I shake my head. Was very expensive.
In the UK you have to have an MOT (Compulsory safety check) each year. The mileage reading is noted. If you role it back you can't show the MOT Histrory. History is important to sell a car at a decent price.
What You said is correct my 2002 Tacoma had 229,000 the transmission shifted like new, the 2.7 liter 4 cylinder ran like new,l think the prior owner also changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. My 2013 Prius has 192,000 miles and runs just fine same here, l change ALL the fluids at 65,000 the break's and spark plugs at 100,000 other than that the tire changes cost more than all the maintenance including the best synthetic oil and filter every. 5,000 miles. Fuel mileage in our little rural town sto and go most of the time 46-49 mpg on a long trip 60-65 mpg it is the Nickel, Metal Hybrid main battery is still great, no problems the cells are still matched, what more can l want? Invisible tires as they cost me more then the rest of the maintenance??? Toyota First class always if the owner takes care???
In the late 90's I had a customer who tried to skew the mileage by unplugging the speedometer fuse in his F350. He was surprised when the bill went several grand and the mileage was recorded in the ECU, thus no warranty. FAFO
Back in 1998 I leased a new Chevrolet full size work van (in Canada). After a month or so we noticed the speed gage and odometer was in miles. We had driven 5000 miles. The correct gage assembly should have been in Kilometres. Because it was still a new van under warranty GM changed out the speedo and odometer assembly to a new correct metric gage assembly. And thus the odometer was zero kilometres. Even though the van had driven 5000 miles.
Our car smelled like gas, Problem was the Monroe Oil Change center never put the oil cap back on. Dunces. I found the cap tucked under the hood by the windshield
Scotty, love your show. How about this for an episode? Before buying any new car, wouldn’t it be great to know the cost of all of those replaceable items. Headlights, tail lights all the various lightbulbs, windshield wipers, fluids ($1300 to replace transmission fluid). A recent situation where I had to replace a lightbulb on my Jeep Cherokee the dealer wanted $700 to replace the bulb. Shocking. I ended up getting it done for $200 but many of these replaceable items are just ridiculous.
You bet. Check out replacing left front Escape turn signal (2013 on) its also $700 and requires the wheel removed and up o. A rack. Manufacturers are making ridiculous design decisions.
I had to go back to hear it again and Scotty was very serious... he wasn't even moving his hands. Good catch. He never uses that language in his Toyota or Honda videos. Hahaha
I had a gas leak smell...it was the o ring , at top of gas tank...a shop replaced the el. Fuel pump...they didn't put in a new o ring....they screwed me...
I have a 2005 Ford Focus that runs like a dream just have it to my Daughter for her first car. I have had it since 2006 and hand made sure to change oil and take good care of
I bought a brand new Nissan Frontier It was a POS with cardboard door panels and tail lights that never stayed attached. Furthermore, when it rained, water flooded the front compartment . You can have ‘em You hardly ever see them here in Houston
That's why I am getting a 2015 Impala with less.recalls and resolved that complex GDI issue which I will rigorously test for probably with my mechanic! Consumer Reports approved of this car and you know there aren't much approved reasonably priced large cars these days with more leg room obviously
Scotty, when do you come out with a video on how to decide which 2007/2008 4Runner I should buy, both are @152k miles? I'll bring it with me when I come to visit.
I used to pull the fuse to the dashboard on my mom's car when I was a kid and they would go out of town so no miles would be added until I put the fuse back in. As an added benefit I got out of a couple speeding tickets by showing the cop that the dashboard was dead.
Haha... I love it- @13:30 the word that popped into my mind was 'nefarious', and just a few seconds later, SK said how 'Nefarious' the use of odometer tools can be! What a channel... Cheers! (Edit- Also, maybe I'm outdated/old school/just old, but I still write down my odometer reading and the amount of gas I put in (and the price) every time I tank up, and record oil/fluid/filter changes too, in the notebook I keep by the Chilton book and Thomas Guide in my cars... I suppose it's because of how my father and grandfather put the fear of God into me re: the importance of recording things. (Like, allways save a recipt, etc). Though, I don't keep track of washer fluid, wiper blades, and tire pressure like my dad (the accountant) did (on an Excell spreadsheet!) Ah, memories... Cheers!
It might very well be old-school, but who cares? I also like to log all my vehicle maintenance/repairs and fuel-ups in an excel spreadsheet. Makes things much easier to keep track of since I do the vast majority of my car maintenence and repairs myself. Logging everything is definitely crucial.
I have a 96 Chevy Lumina APV van, 306k miles, 3400 V6, metal fuel rail. Over the years, I've had to replace the fuel pressure regulator a few times. As it starts going bad, the internal vacuum diafram starts leaking gas into the vacuum system with a gas smell. Just something else you might want to check.
8:30 Hey Scotty, what about adding one stick of two-part JB Weld to a full tank of gas and then driving on a 400 mile highway trip? The JB Weld will circulate thru the fuel system and seal all the leaks from the inside out, right? Much cheaper fix. Is it worth a try? What could go wrong?
Scotty on the ODO manipulation another one to check original milage: Component manufactures log miles/kilometers in their component devices like airbags, fuel injection systems etc not to get fooled by the manufactures for excess warranty claims. Some dealers could read this logged data. Bye the way: I heard from a turbo charger manufacturer that whilst Volkswagen provides in Germany a 2 year warranty to the customer they require the component supplier to provide three years warranty, but nevertheless they charge the customer after two years in case of failure approx 800,- ,- €, whilst they get the part FOC !. Anyway they wouldn't pay much more than a tenth of the 80 ,- €s for the original turbo charger on assembly - Isn't that a smart profit generation model ?
Starts engine. Valvetrain rattling because it's finished. It's a 3 hour job to replace the fuel rail including injectors (just needs o-rings not the rail itself). Not a big deal. The injectors do not need replacement, just the o-rings. Scotty doesn't like plastic parts because he likes using big prybars instead of finesse. The entire job will cost less than $500. That requires a real mechanic who knows how to fix stuff though.
Back in the 80's I got a speeding ticket. I paid a Toyota mechanic to move my speedometer needle down below the zero. Then I had it calibrated by radar to show that the needle was at the correct speed even though I was speeding. Got the ticket thrown out. Also he said he could change the odometer. I said no thanks.
Personally i also recommend Toyota over everything else, i used to work in a factory where we made Ford, GM, AND some Jeep parts, granted far less jeep stuff. Ford was our biggest contract, GM just under that and I gotta say, it's all plastic garbage. Every single one
Nope. Ive worked inmn cars forr 20 years, Honda, mazda , then maybe toyota, and old fords...and new toyotas quality has slipped a lot. I wouldnt want one..
Nope....ive worked on cars for 20 years...honda ,mazda, then maybe toyota, and old fords...even scotty has said honda makes the best motors in the world...hondas are usually as reliable as toyotas, my last honda had about 360k when it was rearended...still ran like new...my civic SI with the 6 spd standard tranny has a little over 300k and runs like new....and those arent the only high high milage hondas ive had...and ive had mazdas and older fords with simular milage, with no major issues...and toyota uses just as much plastic crap.....
They make a kit that you can install that includes the fan and will turn on when you turn on the ac it had a temp probe also I used it on a pt cruiser worked good
There is one thing you neglected to say. You can change your odometer reading BUT your computer in your car also keeps you reading. Example a dealer can get the real mileage.
As for the milage by the reciept for oil changes mean nothing on my cars. I only change the oil at a shop if im on vaca and do not have my oil pan and ramps.
I HAD A 2004 MALIBU, 4 CYL AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH 207K MILES THAT NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. AT 207K MILES IT NEEDED A TIMING CHAIN, IT MAY HAVE JUMPED A TOOTH. DID 2004-2007 MALIBUS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC FUEL INJECTORS AND THE FUEL RAIL?
Had a 2002 Impala, purchased from rental car company. Good thing I bought the extended warranty, the transmission blew, engine blew, steering linkage failed. All of this before 15,000 miles! Pile of junk. New trans new engine and steering linkage, Then trade it in on a Ford Custom Conversion Van, was a good but guzzling van for 6 years before it was traded to another car. Impala was awful.
I had recently bought a vehicle that was supposed to have 68,000 miles but turns out the guy took the dashboard apart and painted the odometer with some kind of really dark paint so I couldn't see until I got it into sunlight and found that it has 268,000 miles he painted the 2 under the glass on the odometer
Scott Kilmer you remind me of a friend of mine. He's a brother named Scott and his name is Leon Janice Allan Leon . Anyway you're my hero . I haven't paid a mechanic since meeting your professional advice. You're the best bro.
Scotty, I have a 2012 Malibu I will place the time in chain did the isolated track with the battery to get the manufacture codes cleared now the engine light comes on and it still comes up reduce engine power which sensor it would be causing that different codes come up intake, camshaft, positioning system, P0011 or is it a P1682 ignition one switch circuit two and take camp chef position. Actuator solenoid valve control circuit P0 010P1682. Please help if you can.
I have the 2.5l I4 version of this car that has 130k miles rides better than my Buick with under 70k miles and my mercury. Both of them are more luxury than my impala. The bad thing is it smelled like gas inside oddly until I changed the vvt solenoid
Hi scotty. What is the cheapest and used and old reliable car that's worthy to buy on a budget? With only minor repairs that doesn't cost as much as the car. Thanks

I have a 2005 Ford Focus that runs like a dream just have it to my Daughter for her first car. I have had it since 2006 and hand made sure to change oil and take good care of
I bought a brand new Nissan Frontier
It was a POS with cardboard door panels and tail lights that never stayed attached. Furthermore, when it rained, water flooded the front compartment . You can have ‘em
You hardly ever see them here in Houston
That's why I am getting a 2015 Impala with less.recalls and resolved that complex GDI issue which I will rigorously test for probably with my mechanic! Consumer Reports approved of this car and you know there aren't much approved reasonably priced large cars these days with more leg room obviously
💥 Only 8 yrs old , that's crap. I hope to get at least 15 - 20 years out of all my vehicles !!!
Hey, Scott im a big fan I'm from jamaica 🇯🇲 I'm going to buy a used camry 2000 it's a good buy for a startup car I'm a big fan of Toyota
love your shows
Yeah those tire pressure sensors are so annoying. It’s the only thing I hate about my Corolla.
Scotty, when do you come out with a video on how to decide which 2007/2008 4Runner I should buy, both are @152k miles? I'll bring it with me when I come to visit.
I had the same problem with my Malibu and my friend had it with his Impala
Though, I don't keep track of washer fluid, wiper blades, and tire pressure like my dad (the accountant) did (on an Excell spreadsheet!)
Ah, memories... Cheers!
It might very well be old-school, but who cares? I also like to log all my vehicle maintenance/repairs and fuel-ups in an excel spreadsheet. Makes things much easier to keep track of since I do the vast majority of my car maintenence and repairs myself. Logging everything is definitely crucial.
a GREAT indicator for me is the wear depth level of the front and rear brake metal DISCS
I am bad with vehicles, but that is clean as heck for 200k miles @ 0:48
Just got a brand new corolla. My last corolla had 200k miles not 1 problem it's crazy
Nice
Yeah but they’re sooo BORING 😂
No one cares you drive a sports car.
@guestguest3715 I didn't get it to win car shows. It's the ultimate work commuting vehicle. So cheap at end of the day it helps me make more money 💰
@guestguest3715 I'll gladly take boring vs. constantly worrying about breakdowns.
Thanks for your service young man , and Scotty!!!
I’m not a GM fan, but in all fairness, this car has served the owner very well.
Happy Thanksgiving
I have a 96 Chevy Lumina APV van, 306k miles, 3400 V6, metal fuel rail. Over the years, I've had to replace the fuel pressure regulator a few times. As it starts going bad, the internal vacuum diafram starts leaking gas into the vacuum system with a gas smell. Just something else you might want to check.
If you use the Original Mercedes diagnostic you can see if some one has messed with the odometer if the car is 2013 or newer
Once I had a probably '95 old New Yorker. I got the gas rail thing from junk yard and the car lasted a few years longer😅
17:44 They can go to Hades......hilarious Scotty!🤣
Sling blade 😂
I'm always suspicious of "low miles". I always check over the dash and the high wear items
Its funny how it went into a tiny rant about the vin check site 😂 love it!
Lots of good info, thanks Scotty
Chevrolet =Junkyard!!
Didn’t used to be that way
It wasn't always like that. I've owned two 2003 Chevy Suburbans and they were absolute tanks.
Epic!
I went to get a key cut for my VW golf. And the guy showed me, the first option in his software was to change the odometer.
I hope you went somewhere else for a key! Some crooks think we are all stupid! Is there VW dealer nearby?
I have an 06 Honda civic LX. I smell gas but only when I first start it up. After that it's fine.
Nice now we’re getting to the good stuff
This is why i drive my old Vectra from 1989. Changed orings around my injectors, took like 10 minutes to change and cost a whopping 2 dollars.
Personally i also recommend Toyota over everything else, i used to work in a factory where we made Ford, GM, AND some Jeep parts, granted far less jeep stuff. Ford was our biggest contract, GM just under that and I gotta say, it's all plastic garbage. Every single one
what about nissan?
@@drigocrews I don't have too much experience with Nissan but I would say any Nissan without a cvt should be a good buy.
@@drigocrewsnissan isnt nearly as good as honda, mazda, toyota...and some others... nissans with the front wheel drive are known for tranny issues..
Look at the brake pedal, that never fails
They make a kit that you can install that includes the fan and will turn on when you turn on the ac it had a temp probe also I used it on a pt cruiser worked good
My Uncle says check the wear on the break pedal....
There is one thing you neglected to say. You can change your odometer reading BUT your computer in your car also keeps you reading. Example a dealer can get the real mileage.
Excellent info Scotty! Thanks
On the fuel rail leak- how about a low mileage replacement complete engine swap? Probably $2000 ?
@cjrock4096 Sorry? I'm speaking from personal experience here in Texas.
I have this very car. Never had a problem with it. Getting ready to take it in for 100K service.
Probably because even at 200k miles, the plastic is only degraded enough to leak a tiny amount.
Might wanna check with UV light, glasses, and that dye to be sure.
As for the milage by the reciept for oil changes mean nothing on my cars. I only change the oil at a shop if im on vaca and do not have my oil pan and ramps.
This us a great edition Scotty. Thank you.
Thank You Scotty‼️🏁🏆
I HAD A 2004 MALIBU, 4 CYL AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH 207K MILES THAT NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. AT 207K MILES IT NEEDED A TIMING CHAIN, IT MAY HAVE JUMPED A TOOTH. DID 2004-2007 MALIBUS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC FUEL INJECTORS AND THE FUEL RAIL?
The miles mph @60-65 gave a mileage of 50-55 mpg depending on wind and temperature?
Had a 2002 Impala, purchased from rental car company. Good thing I bought the extended warranty, the transmission blew, engine blew, steering linkage failed. All of this before 15,000 miles! Pile of junk. New trans new engine and steering linkage,
Then trade it in on a Ford Custom Conversion Van, was a good but guzzling van for 6 years before it was traded to another car. Impala was awful.
Thx so much. Helps to know tire pressure warning sensors mb failing and must check more often w gauge.
Scotty can you do a video on the 2021 Hyundai Santa fe, my wife and i just bought one used 50,000 miles on it, and want to know what you think? Thanks
Scotty we really ❤ and respect your honesty! Thank You Brother'
Ouch
Ik they can be charged for it wanna say it’s felony charge but not for sure if they’re caught
YES, ITS DEFINITELY A FELONY.
The odometer tampering is more common than most people realize, sadly a fact!
Injectors for the 2.5 only run about $80 a piece for gm ones on rockauto. Not sure where you got $200 from lol. Stealership prices
Thanks Scotty ❤
DO ALL THE MALIBUS AND IMPALAS WITH 4 CYL HAVE PLASTIC INJECTORS AND FUEL RAILS? WHICH YRS?
My 2004 Matrix' odometer maxed out at 299,999.99 and I always get a comment from mechanics and oil people who think, "OMG!"
I have the 2.5l I4 version of this car that has 130k miles rides better than my Buick with under 70k miles and my mercury. Both of them are more luxury than my impala. The bad thing is it smelled like gas inside oddly until I changed the vvt solenoid
They should start selling the gasoline scented air freshener at the local garage. That will get more customers coming back.
can you make a video about people using RACING FUEL? both cars and motorcycles please. THANK YOU
Another good one, thanks!
Just made video of my aveo emotion 2008 with that chevy at begining. I love gas olor.
Guys living above me in auto repair school. The small dealers just gave them the cluster. They took it to school change whatever they wanted.
Hi scotty. What is the cheapest and used and old reliable car that's worthy to buy on a budget? With only minor repairs that doesn't cost as much as the car. Thanks
Great shape for a Meakun can with over 200K miles Scotty.
