Not the Ram though, because those models of Rams have terrible transmission designs and don't last over 200k miles often. The Chevy though is really good. I own a 99 Tahoe with a 5.7 and im on the first transmission still with 398,679 miles on the odometer and it may eat gas but it never left me on the side of the road.

@@Shutchohole it originally was a reference to the Cummins models as 89-93 was the 1st gen of that. It has now for some reason became simply a Ram reference but that doesn't work for because the Ram goes back much farther. Traditionally the "gen" reference is for Cummins models only.
@@csgilliam makes more sense that way I guess. I don't really get referring to everything as a generation, unless you're shopping for parts or a certain year range of a vehicle. I love that 2001 ram the reason is transmission took was kick in with the forgot to let the truck warm up because them trucks have a sensor on the transmission if they don't want to kick in until they have for certain temperature and cold weather that they're in that definitely explains why the transmission wasn't working for a few but otherwise the 5.9 liter v8s are bulletproof motors my uncle has one with over 700,000 And still going on the road today
The ford would've blown them all away with the 5.4 triton and if they got one with an h9 rear axle (3.55 LS front and rear). They intentionally picked the 4.6 with an open diff.
@@brandonstewart7145 they aren’t, I blew up my 5.7 at like 280000kms, it knocked when it was cold and I used to have to wait for it to warms up. Then it started knocking all the time, then I got it stuck and had to rev it and that just took care of the bad bearings, after that it had like half the power. One thing I will say is it still got me home! 😂
For ease of repair, reliability I would say Early 2000 trucks were the best around. Ford 2v 4.6/5.4, Chevy 4.8/5.3, Dodge 5.2/5.9 were all fairly basic trucks that you could put a ton of miles on. Yes, they had some issues, but overall rock solid in my opinion. Before the days of active fuel management, direct injection, vvt, turbos, 6-8-10 speed transmissions to add to complexity. Rust was a factor though!
Have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 with the off-road package we bought new in Oct 2000. Still a great truck. Bilstein 5100s all around, new water pump, front rotors, pads, and one caliper are the only mechanical repairs it has required. My daughter has been daily driving it for the last three years. Need to do front crankshaft seal. Covered the brittle dash with one from LMC and replaced the instrument bezel, too. Last half ton with a solid front axle.
Another thing with the Dodge Ram trans is if you don't have the kick down like or throttle position cable adjusted right then trans won't act right. My '97 Ram 1500 with a 360 V8 auto has 272,750 miles on it so far with the original engine and trans with no rebuild and still going strong so far. Best vehicle ive ever owned was my 99 silverado. I bought it over 3 years ago for 500 bucks. It was an ext cab but it was the cross over year, so it was techincally a '00 cause it had the 5.3. It was t boned in a hit and run but on the driver side ext cab part under the back window into the bed. No frame damage. I ran that beast to its limits EVERYDAY, most of the time pulling a fully loaded trailer. Only had 108k when i first got it, ended up selling it at around 133k for 700 bucks after i went thru 2 trannys lol. Absolutely loved it and am in the search of another one
4.6 Ford engine is one of the very best engines ever made, says everyone ever, as a fact the highest mile cars carry 4.6 v2 engines, your statement is like I'm nobody ever...
That Dodge has aged like my 99 (dash, sunglasses holder and map light). Also my fan clutch was locked up just like Nathan's. I replaced the clutch and that fixed it.
I’ve got a 2001 Ram 1500 with all the same broken parts! They used very cheap plastics and fabrics for that interior and they all went bad. 193,000 miles though so it’s hard to complain too much.
Very Top Gear of TFL, I like it. The Dodge was pretty wimpy, crappy paint and all, was definitely the best looking truck. First gen of the "big rig" style is classic!
I love these truck comparisons for every day real trucks. While I can afford a new truck but it seems Ludacris to pay 60-70k for a new truck! I now own a 94 F-150 single cab, short bed 4x4 with 395k miles. It runs and looks great, I constantly get compliments on it with offers to buy it!
If the GMT-400 Chevy isn’t the winner I’d be shocked. I’ve owned square body Chevys, square and “second gen” dodges, a few 80-96 model F-150’s and 3 88-98 GM trucks. Of all those the GMT-400 trucks rode the best, broke down the least, did best in the snow, had the best power and were the easiest to work on. As far as I’m concerned the GMT-400 was the best pickup ever built. Last of the old small blocks but with overdrive trannys (all mine were manual), roomy cabs, and torsion bar suspension.
I keep saying Roman is the funniest cast member because he's not afraid to cross boundaries this segment had nothing to do with condoms yet I found myself crying laughing 😂😂
No lie. I raced my 2001 5.4 against my buddys 98 with a 5.7 we raced 3 times and all three times I got him on top end. It was so close. You're looking at differences of gearing ratios and rear diff ratios. Great race !
The dodges really don’t like big tires. The transmission isn’t made for them. Common way to kill that 4 speed auto. Stick with 245/75 and it makes the truck so much better in almost every way.
Dodges of this generation had junk transmissions anyway. Until pretty recently that's always been the biggest issue with Dodge trucks is their disposable transmissions. These days they got ZF transmissions and while they don't always seem to sync up well with their engines ''see 6.4L Hemi takes on IKE gauntlet video'' they at least are rugged and don't grenade themselves under normal use.
Do you have any idea what you're talking about? 🤣 wow. I got oversized tires on my 2nd gen and it does beautifully. In any condition and terrain. Oh... And its a 5 speed.
could you possibly do a segment on the effect that deleting Active and Dynamic fuel management on GM trucks is has having on fuel economy for these vehicles?

@@redneckillinois2030 all a Dodge would ever do specially the 01 Ram is blowing up and you're right, smoke to hell..
79-year-old female here just loved this. Laughed the whole time. Great fun. Wish I could have been there!.
I hope you're still alive!
Would have loved to see all 3 trucks from the 90's, but still an awesome video. I daily an 06 f150 with the 4.6 2v engine and it's a tank. Not fast but it's been taking me to work and hauling supplies for me for 5 years.
Love the dashboard storage compartment in the Dodge...😅
Damn the Chevy walked the Dodge and its only got the 305! Imagine if it had a 350 lol
The Ford only had the 4.6 281ci
@@lokomike2911 it's like 10 yrs newer lol like 2 gen newer than the chevy
that Dodge needs a tune up bad...
@@hank1556 nope, its just called a Magnum V8, most gutless thing I've ever driven and I've driven 2 5.9's and the 5.2
Yeah or a 454
Love the new series, I’m excited to follow. I’m actually in the market for a sub $5000 truck so this is perfect timing.
Love this series guys. It's good to see the three amigos doing this challenge. Hilarious!
hello how are you doing ? I’m Natasha from California and I’m single….you???
Andre at 19:31 - We're getting some professional help.
Me: Oh, and the trucks are getting worked on, too!
hello how are you doing ? I’m Natasha from California and I’m single….you???
“A very good triton!”
Says nobody ever lol
4.6 Ford engine is one of the very best engines ever made, says everyone ever, as a fact the highest mile cars carry 4.6 v2 engines, your statement is like I'm nobody ever...
This series is awesome! Good work guys. Keep up this fun and budget friendly content.
hello how are you doing ? I’m Natasha from California and I’m single….you???
My 00 gmc sierra 5.3L has 352k all original. Still runs like a champ. Great truck
Of course the Second Gen Ram has a cracked dash. This was a really fun video to watch.
I love my Ford truck all most 367000 on it and still looks good and runs perfect thank you AMSOIL!!
I love how the 97 f250hd with a 460 I paid $3000 for in 2013 smashes all of them with a 7.5 second 0-60
Probably be around 10 seconds at high altitude like shown here, but still, those 460's are torque monsters.
"That's a farm truck!" Yeah, that's what you want. Farm trucks get harder use than anything else.
No wonder, Ford wins here anytime.
I have been waiting patiently for this! Go 2nd gen!🤣
I LOVE my 98 chevy k3500. Thing has been dead nuts reliable for 4 years.
Actually the diesels have better condom names. Duramax, cummins, powerstroke
Ok.. So, Andre is James, clearly.. Roman is Hammond,, aaaaaand Nathan, with all of his 'excuses' must be Jezza 🤣
Loved top gear! Started watching Grand Tour, but got side tracked.
Bought a 2000 Ram 1500 cause of this video! It is the best driving used car I have ever bought.
That's the saddest thing I've ever heard
@@redetroitwing you didnt hear it, you read it lol
Stay up to date with maintenance and you should be alright.
No lie. I raced my 2001 5.4 against my buddys 98 with a 5.7 we raced 3 times and all three times I got him on top end. It was so close. You're looking at differences of gearing ratios and rear diff ratios. Great race !
How very Top Gear of you, yes I loved it! Cant wait to watch the rest of this series
Sounds like the Dodge Ram has a locked up clutch fan. This is the kind of content we love!! That RAM had an LSD for sure!
Thought the same thing. I had a 2nd gen ram with the 360 and it was pretty quick until the fan locked.
Mr. magnum and Mr. Triton omg this is a funny episode omg.
"Sounds like three brands of condoms" I laughed way too hard at that, I love these budget series 🤣
I got a 2002 Ford F-250 with a 5.4 V8 Trition, Extended cab and 8ft box. 0-60mph is 8.7 seconds
I’m only 5 minutes in and I’m already super glad you guys decided to go this direction. Keep these coming 👍🏼
I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 and I love my truck
Very cool series. I liked it when Top Gear did it 10 years ago, I'm sure I'll like the remake.

@@GATORADDAM oh ok but what did meant by saying you are not an idiot? I never called you an idiot
I love the way you guys compared these trucks
Hey that old 305 put up a fight 😂😂
If Andre had the 350 it would’ve been no contest on the drag strip😂
That dodge should have had 4.10 gears..if it was running good they would be pretty close ...a dodge with the 3.55 gears would get gapped
@@jw7037 also I’ve figured out that 2nd gens shift right at the 5000 rpm line when floored that’s normal
@@johnnyrobertshouston2341 you can adjust the cable..but then consider your truck unreliable
If it the ford would of had the 5.4 that 5.7 wouldnt have been able to keep up
@@3rdkoast4life yup..
could you possibly do a segment on the effect that deleting Active and Dynamic fuel management on GM trucks is has having on fuel economy for these vehicles?
We will when we can get our hands on these trucks.
I was not aware they had these on the Vortec small blocks.
They came well under budget. Should have spent the rest of the 5k budget on upgrades... like tires!
Lov comparing the the older models, since the new ones are so expensive the average Joe has to go used! Do some on the the smaller and midsize too!!
