2021 Topps Series 1 Review & Set Guide! Worth the Price or Not So Nice?

- It's time to review and rank the baseball card hobby's newest release, 2021 Topps Series 1. In this definitive 2021 Topps Series 1 set guide and review I will review the set design, the complete checklist, key cards, rookies, insert cards, relics and more. I also review the auto checklist, the entire parallel rainbow and additional surprises found throughout the 2021 Topps Series 1 set.
Diving even deeper, I take a look at who should buy into the Topps Series 1 set and who should stay away, dissecting the positives and the negatives of the set. I even look at the team checklists to give you helpful hints on what teams to target in group breaks.
This will lead us to my 1 Cent "Sensational Set" Ranking. The Sensational Set Ranking is the most complete set rating system on the internet where I rank the 2021 Topps Series 1 set in 10 different categories. I then tally up the overall scores in each category which gives us an overall rating score. The Sensational Set rating score compares the 2021 Topps Series 1 set with past Topps Series 1 sets as well as with other sets that have been releases in the 2021 baseball card season

Great review. I mostly agree with you. I think the checklist is solid. I preordered box (12 packs) of the fat packs as well as a retail box. I think they were the best deals.

I have been looking forward to 2021 Topps Series 1 for some time and am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my preorders next week. This rookie class appears to be a good one. I will build a set or two, but I am always looking to find a rare parallel of a top rookie. Thank you for you preview. One addition team for breaks (IMO) is the Atlanta Braves since they two rookies that may turn out to be stars. Thanks again. It feels like "Christmas day" is approaching in February.
The Braves almost made the list over the Marlins, bit I went with "most RCs" over Braves. Bit for sure, the braves are a real nice team in S1. Happy ripping!

Really enjoyed the breakdown. There are retail mega boxes that are available a few places and ebay. You get 16 packs with 16 cards. Each pack had a 52 insert.

Amazing work. Thank you. Is there a whole list of “Team Targets”. For either Topps or Dunruss. ? Like a detailed list of what each team has in the set. Or did you just sit down and figure it out. ?
Beckett does provide a "team set" list for each set. But it doesn't break down the amount of autos, RCs, etc that each team has. I do that manually

@@1CentSportsCards Tins too Steel City had, only format I preordered. I really don't like the design of the base set. Will wait and get the factory sets and chase the inserts as singles. On another topic, I'm not sure how all the Bowman type prospect cards are going to affect the rookie card designation over time. Might make for a good video for players like Wander Franco and Jason Dominquez. Not just Bowman / Topps, but Panini as well. For example, would it be better to pull a 2018 Optic bronze prizm Acuna Rated Prospect auto, like I have, or a later Acuna Rookie auto from a later in 2018 product... Yes I know in Acuna's case, the rookie autos will be better... But long term, how much do you think the values will differ for say a 2020 Dominguez Bowman base mojo auto, and his flagship rookie auto, whenever he makes the show...
Hobby shops and breakers selling retail. THAT is part of why the hobby is FUBAR!! People raping walmart and Target, then the raping really kicks in on e-bay! Greed has ruined the hobby!

Thanks , OH I agree about the name size , when i first bought the Tin , when i opened um up an seen the name banner , i thought what the hell ! i had to get my coin magnifier out to read the names , my eyes have adjusted to them some but it would be a bonus if Topps decided to address that flop and rerun some series 1 with a name size increase , it would have to help value , I think !

I picked up a hobby box, hope to get it soon… Hopefully retail with the limits as you mentioned makes it to where people can actually get some… I know I am able to occasionally, but for the Fairweather collector or the person is just getting in, it needs to happen for the hobby to continue growing. Nice work on the video as always!
If walmart starts doing what Target does I think retail will get itself worked out. The box flippers are crazy!

Cronenworth has to be in S2, no doubt... I'm betting Wander ends up in S1 2022. Just depends on when he gets called up.
I’m thinking Cronenworth and Kebryan Hayes will be the main series 2 guys and wander will be in update to carry the product as Robert did series 2 this year

I agree 100% - their designs over the years has really fallen off - basically SUCK ...where the hell is their imagination? I suggest you put all the DESIGNERS and lock them in a room for DAYS if not WEEKS until they come out with something AWESOME that the common collector LOVES....incentive for brain activity....in the room have a blowned up picture of all the TOPPS cards EVER made....and then they can ponder each one and maybe steal from a couple of them and come up with a GREAT DESIGN.
Chase the rookies, autos/relics are hit and miss, but more likely to hit RC or rookie autos in flagship. Good video and awesome breakdown.

You'll get rookies out of both the hobby box and the jumbo box. If you want an auto, you have to go Jumbo. If you want better odds on parallels and SPs, I'd go with a hobby box. Both will carry decent long term value assuming a few of the rookies in this set pan out.

Where do you buy these boxes and stuff. I just started collecting but all ive been able to find in my local targets is Panini Prizm and a few update series packs. Can i order one of these boxes from somewhere?
If you're looking for retail boxes, you may want to try steel City collectibles online. They will be more expe dive than fi do g it in the retail stores themselves but it's still better than buying off the box flippers on ebay. To increase your chances of finding them in the retail stores, try Tuesday mornings as the store opens. Also Target seems to be limiting the amount of boxes you can buy which is helping keep product on shelves a (little) bit longer.

You can get them at a local card shop or at any of the online retailers and card shops.
I pulled griffey Bowman 89 throwback numbered to 70
A guaranteed relic for $21 is pretty nice, I'll have to pick one up. Do you think Series 1 or Series 2 will be better?
I think they both will be good. It really depends on if Wander Franco lands an opening day roster spot. If he ended up in S2, that's probably a slight edge, bit I don't think that will happen. So for now S1 probably has a slight edge.

Trent... If you are looking for autos, go hobby. Parallels and SPs, go Retail. I actually think hangers are better than Blasters in regards to CPC... The relic in blasters is what you're paying for... The hanger gets you more bang for your buck usually.
Which new sets have the most high valued cards in them?
Value is based on scarcity, the player on the card and the popularity of the set. Its not so much that a "set" has the most valued cards. Its that a player in a popular set may hold more value than a player in a less desirable set.

Try Target. They seem to be limiting purchases on cards to 2 boxes a person lately which has really helped.
I saw hobby boxes going for 120 on eBay and 210 for jumbos.

Great question. I'm not sure but the timing is gonna be tight as the signing period just opened up. I'm worries about the bowman set and wouldn't be surprised to see it pushed back in release date like last year.

How are the Mets looking as a team set?
It's got Jimenez as a key rookie (he's on the Indians now). It's kind of a middle of the road set IMO. The auto checklist has a few good 80s autos and piazza is in there too. With they would have highlighted more of the 60s Mats though. If you're a fan of the Mets, there's enough there to keep you interested.
Lasy year 80 percent of autos were jordan yammamoto and robert dugger so miami fans should be happy

If it is a patch, yes. The bummer is some of them are manufactured and not game worn. It sounds like you may have got a game worn patch which is pretty cool.
I looked at the checklist and it took me like 30 minutes to go through the whole thing and read the names LOL

Well anything is better than the 2001 set, especially the fact that 2001 had almost no rookies that panned out other than Hafner's better than average, but not near HoF, career. You only buy 2001 for the inserts, not the base set. Heck, checkout Blowouts buy prices on 2001wax....

Cronenworth shoulda been in 2020 Updates! The design looks like '87-'88 Donruss had a baby. Terribly unimaginative design for an anniversary edition. Photography/imagery should be a criteria.

You rating System has an error ... 4 starts range from 61-80... 5 stars ranged from 80-100... ( two 80 point system value) ..5 stars should start 81-100... just FYI simple fix

Hobby boxes are going for about 150 at the moment. Retail boxes (not blasters) are around 90

Solid 3 star...cost value..8?? More like ...5...
We'll, when you consider over time what the value of some of these cards can be and the fact that it is still one of the more inexpensive sets you can buy today, that's what goes into that equation. It's basically the premiere standard for baseball card collecting. It's hard to rate it low based on those metrics.
The tins have 75 cards

Topps needs to hire new graphic designers. Their designs are trash. They make way too much money to be releasing these tired a$$ designs. I’m curious to see the platinum /70. I hope they look like the diamond anniversary did from 2011. That’s my favorite topps set release ever. Those diamond anniversary and cognac cards are beautiful. I noticed they did away with advance stats and made more black from/69 to /70
I think the platinum should look pretty nice. Good catch on Advanced stat cards. They may still be in there, just not listed. We find out tomorrow!!!
I think the Hobby Boxes are the weakest format. No auto and a manufactured patch. Weak sauce.

How are you going to ignore Cristian Pache as a top rookie?
I left out a few top tier rookies. They can't ALL be key cards! Pache is a great RC in this set as well though. I really want to see some extended time in the bogs before I pass judgement on him, but I get a lot of folks are hot on him right now.
Deivi Garcia and sixto Sanchez were somehow ignored as well.

Pedro Martinez said sixto is going to be a superstar. Garcia already has one of the highest spin rates in mlb. From what I have seen personally both players look awesome. Pitchers are way better then the love the hobby gives them.
