    Thank you so much for breaking down the different card types. I’m watching a lot of videos and no one is breaking them down and they use the different card types in an industry way that makes you feel alienated a little. I’m back to collecting after 20+ years of being away from the hobby so this is really helpful. Thanks for doing this.

    Great video! One thing I’ve learned and would add…eBay is obviously a great place to buy singles, but it’s also the way collectors value a cards worth (by looking at how much a card has recently sold for). So if you get a good deal for a card on eBay, ultimately you just lowered its value a bit as well. This is why I try to finds deals at cards shows or other websites. Unfortunately there isn’t a Becket magazine anymore like we had in the 90’s lol

  • @deadcentered

    For Baseball especially recent rookie cards and not "prospects" the go to products would be Topps "flagship" - Series 1, Series 2, and Topps update (but these will come down to the players in the checklist in that year)
    And usually the first set they appear in, out of the above sets is the desired card to collect.
    Also Topps Chrome, Topps Chrome Update, Topps Sapphire are also desired sets.
    But do your research, compare prices, compare market fluctuation over a number of months before investing.
    If just starting out spend time researching before jumping in. 👍

    To the youngsters out there, his first few words are key. When investing, in anything, you must *constantly* fight/subdue emotion when making decisions. This plays out just as strongly in things like the stock market. Patience and control of your emotions and probably the two most important ingredients to creating a sound investor.

    The one thing most people don't know is that in Prizm the Green Parallel is more rare than the Silver. Basically there are less Green than Silver..but like you said, the Silver is more shiner.. more appealing to the eye.
    Green parallel is cool if you get players from the Celtics, Bucks, Philly Eagles, ect.
    I think if people realized that the Green is more rare I still don't think it would be matter...the Silver is just to appealing..and by now it would be hard to convince people otherwise.

    great tips, i am just starting to get into this hobby. i find this very nostalgic of when i used to collect baseball cards as a kid. just wondering cuz you mentioned to focus on buying rookie cards, but what about also buying cards when a player changes teams (i.e lebrons first year in a laker jersey)?

    • @TheComebackCardInvestor
      @TheComebackCardInvestor  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey Chonger. Welcome and great question. 1st year jersey cards definitely attract some interest, but not nearly as easy to determine as RCs. Lebron/AD 1st year Lakers cards skyrocketed in July/August but have cooled tremendously. While I expect them to hold some long term value because they actually won, thus building their legacy in LA, I see them as better short term flip opportunities, especially because the players may not win a championship (Kawhi with the Clippers, KD with Brooklyn, etc)

    • @ryandenslow8225
      @ryandenslow8225 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too add to this...I think it depends on the team they go too. Lakers are one of the more Iconic franchises in all of sports. Honestly I think it comes down to two things. One, does the player have an individual fan base (ie. Lebron Fans compared to Cavalier fans) and also how popular the franchise is. Think Lakers, Yankees, Celtics...those kinda teams. Both of those combined I think made first year Laker Lebron cards popular. Still though, they have to build some kind of legacy or they ultimately or they probably go down.

    For Hockey, low-end = Upper Deck Series 1 & 2 for Young Guns, mid-tier = SP Authentic for Future Watch. The Cup is the high-end product but it's not as liquidable and also the thick card stock usually does not get a good grading. Also note that majority of your buyers will be Canadians, meaning if you live in the States, you might have to reduce your sales price to compete with Canadian sellers because the Canadian buyers have to pay sales tax for imported goods.

      @TheComebackCardInvestor  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andrew. Yeah I like the 100 or less tip. I'm at the point where COMC has all my cheap cards and grading/storing/organizing cards is more of a chore than a pleasure so I'll be scaling up to less cards of higher value. Thanks for the insight!

  • @trollerskater
    @trollerskater 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    For higher end football/basketball, I would also add Contenders and National Treasures. Also rookie autos are very underappreciated now. People will eventually realize how overprinted the base cards are, especially in the last few years. Guys can only sign so many autos, so those have some inherent rarity, and are also much cooler than just a piece of paper.
    I also like your rule about not paying more than a PSA 8 value raw. I have a similar rule which is that I'll assess it online (just stay away from anything in a sleeve or toploader) and then pay no more than 1 grade less than what I think it is. If you're less experienced with grading, this rule should be 2 grades less. So if you think something looks like a PSA 7, pay no more than the PSA 5 value.

    Good tips. Topps Heritage for baseball can also be good depending on the year. They recreate the flagship design from 40 years prior. So some designs are going to be more sought after than others. Or if the year they are recreating had a great rookie class, that can also add to the hunt.
    Also gotta double down on Young Guns for hockey. Outside of maybe the Cup RPAs, it has been the gold standard for Rookies for like 20 years now. Despite being 'low end', the right players can go well into the 4 digits.

    I bought 10 raw Donruss Roberto Alomar rookie cards. I negotiated down to a dollar a card because the picture was not guaranteed. Glad I did. 8 of the cards were off centered. That is fine , I will sell them for $5, knowing that even if I end up selling them for $2, I am still making money. The lesson, don't be afraid to negotiate and leverage your position that the seller cannot guarantee condition. Be the risk inverse investor.

      Hey Aaron. Of course. 15% is steep so that's always something to include with projections. It's kind of like selling a house. Selling in FB/IG groups is another option but that requires some time and risk as well.

  • @DawnBTVS
    @DawnBTVS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Some other tips worth noting.
    #1: The legends will stay legends. Don't overthink it and try to get 'cute' with who you are investing in. Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle, Michael Jordan, Jerry Rice, Tom Brady, Wayne Gretzky... those guys are all safe plays for a reason.
    #2: Prospecting/Hunting for the 'next' ____ (Lebron, Trout, etc.) is the card equivalent of panning for Gold or digging for Oil. The odds are very low that you alone will get the next legend over the other thousands also prospecting. Diversification is paramount if going this route. Imagine if you put $1,500 chasing Robert Griffin III or Mark Prior back in the day only to see injuries derail their long term prospects and ruin the short term ability to sell their cards.
    #3: Rookie Autographs or Rookie Patch Autograph cards are usually the 'holy grail' of the Rookie Card for players. Again, manufacturer matters a lot here.
    #4: Hobby Boxes are risky. It's gambling. The odds are usually low that you'll break even $$ wise in card sales if you rip boxes. Be careful spending $600+ on a Hobby Box just because some people say that's the way to start out in the hobby. For every person who gets the super ice refractor 1/1 auto jersey of Michael Jordan that easily pays for the $800 Box, you have a hundred other people who recoup maybe $300 back in sales.

    • @CameronGroth
      @CameronGroth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel like these are all sound reasons on why to buy and not buy cards. As a Packer fan, I really want to buy some Jordan Love stuff but he hasn’t played at all yet. Who knows, he could be the next Aaron Rodgers caliber player, meh, or not great. That is what worries me the most, losing that money. I’ve gotten a few rookies of Burrow (nothing crazy) but even his Donruss inserts are listed for $20-30 a pop (I have a rated rookie and a normal rookie so far). I’m thinking of selling those just to get my quick money now while they’re hot because you never know when an injury or something could happen to a big name rookie

    • @DawnBTVS
      @DawnBTVS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CameronGroth That's the thing too. What if Jordan Love just becomes a "good" QB ala Matt Ryan or Matt Stafford or Philip Rivers? Solid, productive, long careers but nobody is exactly beating down the door to buy their cards. Maybe Love becomes an Andy Dalton or Kirk Cousins... again, the same situation where the player isn't even a "bad" QB necessarily but they don't quite transcend and become that generational Brady/Rodgers/Russell Wilson type. Even Dak, this was his 5th season and does he come back from that gruesome injury the same QB?
      It's good to prospect a bit for rookies but it's also very easy to buy into the hype and end up overinvesting or not diversifying enough to where the majority of your eggs are in two or three baskets. The trick really is to be smart in how you invest that money: 5 Burrows at $200. Send them in to be graded at say PSA so you get 4 10s and 1 9 grade back. You sell 3 of those 10s for $100 each. You then keep a 10 and a 9 for yourself. You've already made short term profit (the 3 10s sold) with potential for long term profit selling the 10 & 9 if he becomes the next Brady. That's more feasible to do then trying to buy 15 Burrow rookies for $600, getting all of them graded, and hoping he's the next Brady and not Stafford.
      Don't let me scare you off of investing in rookies like Burrow, etc. but knowledge is power. If you have the mindset that a player could be great or could be a bust, you can better maximize selling at peak hype and getting a good profit return rather than chasing an imaginary price because you are blinded into thinking he's the next Tom Brady and you miss the window.

      Hey David. Good info. I only ask the question about the HOFers. How do their card value go up since they r no longer playing. Obviously Jordan Kobe should see increases here and there as shows are made about them. Just wondering. Thanks pal

    • @DawnBTVS
      @DawnBTVS 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JPrice601 It depends on if you're looking short term (say 3 Months to 2 Years) or long term (5+ Years). Short term is more reliant on some specific event boosting their value e.g. HOF Induction, Documentary, Death, etc. Some HOFers, predominantly their rookie cards, will go up over time. Think of them like an S&P 500. You won't get the volatile spikes up & down letting you make 8x profit but if you compared 12/2009 S&P 500 to its price today, you'd have made almost 3.5x profit in 11 years just by holding. It's not sexy/fun but they can be the tortoise in this race. Also as the years go by, those 'vintage' HOF cards continue to appreciate because they become harder to get a high grade in or become scarcer in general. How many 1963 Topps boxes or even packs could you rip today compared to say 2017 Panini Prizm? Think about the high $$ cards like Michael Jordan or Lebron James. The James that sold for $1.8 Million? 'Just' a BGS 9.5 but it was /23. Even that James card is now 17-18 years old.
      Also, don't forget that a lot of these HOFers are legends in their sports and are constantly referenced in broadcasts via records or are names passed down from Father/Mother to Son/Daughter. I didn't need to see Ted Williams or Jim Brown play on my TV live to see their highlights and know the impact they made. Those names still hold up 60-70 years later... think about the names your parents told you about who are legendary compared to the solid but unmemorable players.
      I have a 2008 Hank Aaron Donruss Threads 46/50 card raw. I have a 2016 Albert Pujols Quad Jersey card /25 card raw. Are they rookies or vintage? No. But they have manufactured scarcity and are #2/#5 respectively on the career HR list. If I get them graded, that helps a bit. Maybe those cards go up a bit in 10+ years, maybe not but I'd rather have those names in my collection than say Josh Donaldson or Nelson Cruz. Two very good power hitters but not HOFers. Any time a career HR leaderboard graphic goes up during a game, will you see Aaron/Pujols or Donaldson/Cruz?

I've looked at hundreds of cards now from the early 80's to the present and couldn't find a card with worse than 55/45 centering in either direction on the front. Similar to the concerns of other card hobbies like Pokemon that are riding the hype wave right now, do you think that we might encounter a bubble in the sports card market? If so (e.g. due to overproduction of certain rookie cards), do you see that as being a potential problem for hyped sets in the past few years, or, rather, for future sets yet to be released? (Looking at long-term value)

      Hey Lucky Pepe. Definitely concerned. I felt like summer was a giant bubble and then it popped and it will happen repeatedly. The longer this goes on, the more I would focus on older cards (at least 2017 or older) The pop reports of recent rcs are insane. Perhaps parallels and serial numbered cards of 2017-2020 make more sense too

      You're welcome, Charles. I believe 1st year of Prizm may not be the case and in 2016 football, RCs don't have a base Prizm, only a Silver. It's weird, but in recent years, it looks like they made it easier to decipher.
