    Although I run a much larger backhoe, the issues with buckets smaller than 16” are the same. Small buckets don’t shed the dirt, only useful in dry and loose soil. Digging a wider trench is much faster. As with all buckets, technique is key. Don’t curl your bucket to deepen the cut. Extend your boom, drag the bucket using the teeth to make the cut. Drag the freshly unearthed soul back and only then curl your bucket to remove the soil from the trench. This will keep the bucket from being clogged, most important it will give you a smooth and straight bottom trench.

      Yup....a trenchers number one pitfall is trying to DIG the trench rather than DRAG the trench. Even the stock bucket will pack full in wet soil if you try and dig rather than drag! I know I've been too impatient at times and spent more time cleaning out buckets than digging! 😁 Appreciate the on/off tutorial!

    • @RossOnTheLand

      I think that was my biggest learning accomplishment! Understanding that using the teeth to drag first, and only using the bucket to school up the spoilage was huge. Thanks for the comments

    Yes Ross you have to get a quick attach for your bh. Bexpanded have them and the Canadian company. Its a permanent attachment and then you can switch buckets in litterally seconds.

    • @RossOnTheLand
      @RossOnTheLand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary, someone mentioned that, and I looked it up. I really like it but at over $300 I can't justify that at the moment. I won't be switching out the buckets that much.

    Hence the trenching bucket is for trenching not digging a hole straight down. You would need a post hole digger...

    Love the standard backhoe bucket on my 23s.Had to dig a hole in January with first 10 inches frozen like a rock , Broke throw it in no time with the teeth , Was taking a inch of frozen dirt at a time. Works great on small tree stumps to... Amazing what these small tractors can do.

    • @RossOnTheLand
      @RossOnTheLand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Gary, I agree I love the standard bucket as well, I have a few stump digging vids as well, but wanted to try the trenching bucket and it's not as good as the regular bucket for digging down in confined spaces that's for sure. I will be actually digging a trench later so hopefully it performs better at that. :)

    Hi Ross,
    I noticed that your trenching bucket was from Tractor Attachments in Québec. I have invested in a few of their backhoe attachments, but the game changer for me was their quick connect for the backhoe. If you to exchange buckets / attachments quickly without touching a wrench. Well worth the $ if you are going to be changing your backhoe attachments.

    It is a great joy to watch you use your Kubota. It is also amazing to realize that the backhoe is so powerful and could easily destroy a wall. I am will get a backhoe rather than a cab. I hope that next year we can meet at the equip Expo.

    Ross: excellent point. Standardize a few things to make life easier. You could have got the metal posts that you pound into the ground and then put the 4x4 on it. There is a cost factor though. All in all you were honest about the info. Take care and stay safe: from the other end of the valley. PS: my trees have no leaves anymore.

  • @nbookie

    To help the dirt come out of the bucket, spray with some lube. White grease, high temp, etc. Just a small coating like greasing a baking pan.

    Hi Ross ! Thanks for the heads up you installed the new trench digger ! Maybe a fail, but I still see potential. If I was running underground cable, it's a great add-on to have in your arenol of tools. It's way less invasive in areas like a nice grassed area where you want to inflict minimal damage. Shallow trenches, it works well with. It's too bad about the bucket not wanting to empty easily, but it's still way faster than digging by hand. The new bucket does show potential, but I'll agree with you, what a job to install and remove, I had no clue it is so involved. That is not fun ! It will make you think twice about installing it for sure. BTW, amazing how you were looking at that 1K subs, and now you're ALREADY up to 1.1 K ! - that first 1K is the hardest number to achieve. Hey, remember, as that saying goes ( Kevin Costner ) - if you build it, they will come ( Field Of Dreams movie ) .... if you create content, people will watch. haha ! Great video anyway Ross, nice to see you again.

    • @RossOnTheLand
      @RossOnTheLand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes he definitely does, but when I looked at the 3pt mounted post hole digger it wasn't ideal because of limited height and no downward pressure. But that would have been way easier than a trenching bucket :) haha. Thanks 👍

    Hey Ross, does Kubota have an auger attachment? That might be useful too.

    • @RossOnTheLand
      @RossOnTheLand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do, but it's kind of limited because there is no downward pressure, so depending on the ground it may be difficult to drill and also depending on how deep you go that could also pose issues for the limited travel height of the auger. Thanks for watching. Good suggestion.

    A trenching bucket narrower than the stick and linkage seems like a questionable idea. :D

    • @RossOnTheLand
      @RossOnTheLand  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha! Good observation. This was questionable from the start. Also mix in clay and poor operator technique spelled disaster. :)

  • @jeffparrish-g1y
    @jeffparrish-g1y ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Operating the trenching bucket a different way would be helpful. Instead of digging straight down, raise your boom and pull the dipper and bucket of soil toward you. Curl the bucket at the end of each pass and use the side of the bucket to push the dirt away from your trench to your spoils pile. In essence, you're digging at a 30 to 45-degree angle, not straight up and down.
    Bucket getting plugged up doesn't matter. You're scraping the dirt up and out.

    • @RossOnTheLand
      @RossOnTheLand  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello, that is most helpful! It's something I've since learned how to do , and am definitely better at spoil management. Thank you for the great advice. Have a good week.
