Great video. I've had my BX23S for three years now, and learned this method kind of on my own after I heard it suggested by a friend. It's very useful when digging stumps as well. I start on the far side of the stump, reaching the BH over the top. I then work my way around the sides and eventually to the front of the stump, using these same methods to move the tractor into position. All good stuff.

I added a 2x6 across the rops directly behind the seat. I no longer have to turn my seat. I just sit on the 2x6.

Ive done a lot of trenching on various backhoes. My fix to the tedious job of adjusting position was to buy an excavator. I really like what you've shared and I will give it a try when I dont want to track the excavator to a small trench job. Thanks!

Thanks for the great tip. I've done some ditch cleaning w/ my B3200/BH77 and the climb down/seat pivot/climb up dance every few feet was driving me crazy. I have several hundred yards of drainage ditch to dig and your tip will save me at least a day of labor.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll be starting on a tractor today for the first time to dig a long trench and my biggest concern was having to swivel that seat back and forth every time I need to move it. This will be a big help.
Good deal. Just take it slow and keep the outriggers close to the ground. You could tip it over easily if you get the controls mixed up. You’ll settle in quickly though. 👍
This tip is in my older case 580d operator's manual, they should have put it in yours but maybe a liability with people nowadays 😂 who knows.. Great video it's nice to see it actually done 👍

Outstanding instructional video! Having a 3 point mounted backhoe I can’t do that and it’s very frustrating. Having a sub frame backhoe is far superior to a 3 point mounted primarily for being able to do what you’ve shown. Take care!

Climbing off, turning the damn seat around and climbing back on is a PITA so, yeah. Push it back and pull it forward whenever you can. If it's not level terrain (like my cabin in the mountains) it gets a little tricky. LOVE my BX's. All three of them :)

What I found works for me is to use a broom stick to push down the hydro pedal. I can use both hands and turn the tractor as well.

I have hydrostatic, you mentioned gear, I simply use a stick or board to reach pedal and drive forward when backhoe use 👍

Love it! I remember when I learned. 580 construction king! Loved it then and yes I laughed because it's a great operators tool. Was wondering does the front loader bucket turn all the way over and down. Not seen anyone do it. It also help keep the machine stable. Case does just didn't know if K-Tractor did.?

Awesome hack
Good tip, but let me help you out a little. First, lowering the FEL does help 'plant' the machine, but also, you want to use it with the outriggers to level the machine if possible. This will make the 'geometry' of the backhoe members: boom, dipper, bucket dig more consistent while trenching. Another skill is to turn your front wheels before pushing the tractor forward with the hoe; this will 'shift' your machine sideways to keep on tract while you lift the rear of the machine with the hoe to align it with your path. It takes practice, but is very useful. Realize that the bucket is where all of the 'digging' leverage comes from: don't use the boom and dipper to dig; your machine is just not heavy enough to do that like a 15k# hoe might. After you empty your bucket to the side, return to center, flatten the bucket and sweep to the side to push the over-burden away from the trench. When you return on foot to the trench, the material will be out of your way to stand and work. When on a slope, swing your boom uphill; this will give you a huge weight off-set and stabilize your machine while traversing and you can also add a scoop of dirt for ballast. Final thought: buy your tractor w/ a hoe if you need it. After market hoes w/ their own seat put you too far away to reach the forward controls to do what I talked about. I hope this helps.

I also found a method that I used more often than I thought.
When the land was on a slight angle and the backhoe arm would not go straight into the trench I found that I could use my outriggers to straighten the tractor vertically and continue digging.
I also had to remind myself to check that the tires were pointed in the right direction before pushing myself forward.
One last thing that helped alot was pivoting the rear of the tractor with the backhoe to keep digging in straight line.

You forgot to do the second most important thing. The most important thing is to have your outriggers down to dig. The second thing is to put your loader bucket down far enough that ALL 4 TIRES ARE OFF THE GROUND. When you get all 4 tires off the ground, the machine’s stability is greatly increased because it can’t teeter side-to-side on the front axle. Also when all 4 tires are off the ground you don’t get machine bounce from the cushion of the tires. Having the front bucket down will also make it harder to slide the tractor around accidentally while digging in tough conditions.
So how can we bypass the safety switch so we just drive the machine while facing the backhoe?
I started doing this trick the first week that I bought my new 2022 1025r. Problem is that here in West Virginia we have lots of mountains and my property has lots of inclines. If I am trenching up a hill, the tractor doesn’t want to move with the backhoe. Going down hill you can lose control very easily (quite dangerous). Even getting on and off the backhoe seat (my backhoe has a separate seat for the backhoe) is a real challenge. For a safer handhold, I raise the main boom and the dipper all the way up. Also installed a little metal step on the left side of the tractor to aid in getting up to the driver’s seat on inclines.

Thats a good tip but if you have a hydro with a pedal it much easier and quicker to leave a stick between the seat and fender and just push down on the forward pedal and off you go good luck

I’m looking at buying a tractor for my homestead. I got a 5-acre raw land lot. I want to do land clearing, have a shop built, and have home built down the road. Do you feel the size of your tractor is capable of meeting a small homestead needs? Thanks
Depending on the amount of clearing you have to do, it could be a tad small, but I’m sure it will do it. Once cleared, it will be the perfect size to maintain it. That would be my opinion. Of course we all have different expectations. Best of luck! Working your own land is a great blessing! 👊

That was a couple weeks back on your update tractor video, I lost your channel then, but found it again last night, you guys look alot like me, except im just getting into the tractor part. (Kinda tired of killing my back lifting parts around figured tractor will help that) I have an 81 c10 still down to the frame going back together, but stalled as I take both parents to chemo and haven't had much time or interest to be honest. (I also skip from project to project which doesn't help much, but have to because of parts shortages and back orders. Plus parts are insanely priced right now.

I got my new Kubota a few days ago. I spent an hour the other day just digging at the air with the backhoe. I quickly realized that I have A LOT to learn to dig a tidy narrow trench.
One lever in each hand. Not sure where best to set the throttle for a beginner. Low throttle and you only get one motion at a time. Higher throttle and you can get more than one motion simultaneously, but the movement is jerky without a very light touch on the levers.
Do you have any advice, or should I just keep practicing?
Glad you found it useful! Sounds like you have the right idea. I usually run high rpm’s so I can work both levers more efficiently. However, if I am in a spot where I need to be very careful, like near a building or something, I will throttle down to give myself a little more margin for error. There’s no substitute for seat time! Get out there and enjoy it! 👍😊

Taking all four tires off the ground is going to wear out your stabilizers a lot faster. Allowing the tractor to rock front and back six inches or more. Making it very hard to dig with.
Don't raise your outriggers when you need to move forward.
Leave the parking brake on while you're digging.
In hard ground you might need to leave it in 4-wheel drive while you're digging.
When you do need to move forward turnaround raise the front bucket, take the parking brake off, and push yourself forward without raising the outriggers.
Then turnaround put the parking brake back on and put the front bucket back down.
Never take the backhoe bucket off the ground until you are firmly planted back on the ground.
Another old-timer pro tip is to keep the tractor angled slightly away from the trench with the front tires parallel with the trench.
This way you can look around the backhoe without having to look through it while you're digging.
When you push yourself forward the tractor will stay at a constant angle.
While you are digging you need to keep most of the weight on the outriggers with some weight on the wheels to help stabilize you. Without that, the tractor may start rocking forward and back. At least it does on the big tractors.
I ran backhoes for several years in the Operating Engineers.
When I started running excavators, I didn't want to run backhoes anymore.
As someone else once said, "backhoes are a cross between two different tractors and they are the worst of both worlds."
They can do both but they're not very good at either one.
Both skip loader & mini excavator.
Prior to twenty or thirty years ago backless were the most common machine on construction jobs.
Nowadays excavators are.
Much better for digging.
Also, the higher you raise the back of that tractor with the out riggers, the less stable you are going to be.
Especially when you're reaching out to the side with a full bucket.
When loading tall dump trucks I had to keep the back wheels about 12 to 18 inches off the ground. And the front wheels were at least 12 inches off the ground.
I had to open the clam bucket and push it all the way down.
Have you ever had an issue when fully extending the backhoe bucket? When the backhoe bucket is fully extended there is a 90 degree elbow that makes contact with the backhoe. I have had two elbows snap off in like a day.
I would think the only way that could happen is if the elbow is angled in the wrong direction too close to the arm. I have not had that happen on mine but I’m looking at it and that’s the only thing I can figure…
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead yeah it’s the part of the elbow that connects into the backhoe directly not the hose side. I’m not sure how I can fix that angle since it has to be screwed into the back hoe. I wonder if it was messed up in production. It’s an older 2011 BX25 but new to me.
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead so figured out the issue was the backhoe thumb mount somehow slide up and now was able to make contact with the elbow.

Lol you will lurn alot with a subcompact if you work around a pound. It is so low to ground it will get stuck easy. Will lurn quick on how to get out

My tractor is not a swivel seat, and won't allow it to idle without the E brake engaged, for safety. It will shut down if it is not engaged.
For my machine,
Clearly this would prevent you from being able to scoot along.
I guess this method would be possible for me.
Hey great video! I'm a heavy machinery operator, my only critique would be to NOT lift your rear tires completely off the ground. You want to lift the rear tires a bit but they need to have contact. The reason for that is the stabilizer pads are much smaller then the bottom contact surface of your rear tires. We lift the front tires because they are tiny and the rear should always have contact. Otherwise solid video and you seem like a super cool guy! Look forward to seeing more of your projects!

Just don't understand why you " let the cat out of the bag". Then you just "had" to curl the loader bucket far foward. I have known these techniques for Years! Your vidio Sir was the FIRST to do like l do! The 100 or so amateur " home-lowner" "Twac-tour" backhoe vidios were ALL a waste of good machinery. Thought l would NEVER see the "right way"! You told me absolutely nothing! What a time water
Instead of swiveling the seat, i just sat on my knees facing backwards
(Of course i have pretty steep hills and like to be able to jump off quickly if it tips)
Another way to do it, that i did for some emergency trenching for a flood, is to dig the backhoe bucket in the ground and drive forward in low with 4 wheel lock engaged until it can't, dump the bucket, and do it again.
Can go over it multiple times at increasing depth
I guess this would work on a little subcompact toy backhoe, but not on the large compact like mine
The tip I would give you get rid of that tractor get an excavator

WOW!! That's amazing, been trying to move my MF 1720 back without getting off the seat for some time. Seen it being done by the larger hoes but couldn't figure out who to do this.
