    can we just talk about how relatable it is to watch daytime tv all the time as an undergrad? me, ordering hot wings every day to cure my hangover with dr. phil in my room, until the wing place got closed down for being a drug front.

    The MLM structure is so cult-like. Rather than research concepts & facts yourself, just ask your upline or mentor for their opinion. So predatory & brainwashy

      Yep. It basically is a cult. Cause when you question it people get horrible. Act like youre destroying their life for questioning their job.
      Edit/addition: which is one of the reasons i feel like mlms are so popular in cult circles and fundamentalist areas.

    I feel like the whole "every business has someone who breaks the rules" excuse doesn't/shouldn't work with MLMs anymore, because so many different people across so many different MLM companies consistently get caught doing the exact same things. False income and health claims have become the rule rather than the exception, and that's the point at which the companies themselves are to blame.

    The fact that the reps are the actual customers is what really threw me for a loop with mlms. It all revolves around how much money each person spends towards inventory, so even if you have little to no actual customer sales, it doesn’t really reflect all that poorly on you or your up line.
    As long as you keep feeding money into the company, they really couldn’t care less whether or not you even make your investment back, let alone any real profit.

    In the early 1990's I had an ex who had someone try to recruit him/us to Amway. Not sure if they are still doing this, but they were attempting to get him sucked into this idea that you should buy everything from them ( they were into everything from supplements, and cleaning solutions, to furniture sales at the time) because, in their words, you were buying from yourself, and essentially paying yourself. He nearly fell for the scheme, until I showed him how you are losing money and that if you pay 4 times what an item is worth, you are losing money, because you get a tiny portion compared to what your upline gets. I told him you pay yourself better by getting furniture from a consignment shop and saving the money. I'd love for you to explore two areas with MLM's I haven't seen much about, but are very crucial to their destructiveness. 1, they often prey on couples ( we were invited to a convention that pushed that couples are the best way to do this "business"), and 2, the premise that they try to "sell" that you are paying yourself by buying the products. It's insane but people fall for it, obviously, or these businesses wouldn't exist. Thanks!

    For me it's simple. MLM recruiters wouldn't bring in outsiders if their product was good on its own. Why share an opportunity if it'll lessen your profits? They know that the products are a smoke screen. Stay away kids.

    My ex wife spent tens of thousands on MLMs. She tried monavie, amway and the classic, Avon. The hardest part was that we were young and poor at the time with a new baby and one low wage factory job between us. There was nothing I could say to convince her that it was a scam. We never quite got out of the hole from those… the fact that MLMs are still legal astounds me.

    I have gone to a few MLM Seminars, and every time it left a bad taste in my mouth. I basically had to screw over people to "achieve" the status the speaker has no qualms with how many people he's screwed over. For every "Cody" that kinda establishes a base and gets their profit pulled, there's so many who pay in, get nothing, and the top of the pyramid have no remorse in grabbing the money that is given freely as far as legality.
    Thankfully I in my mind called bullshit and just chalked it up to two hours wasted.

    Mary Kay is one of the biggest MLM schemes out there. They say they are empowering and helping women, but the CEO is a man (as are more than half of their executive board), and they push hard to bring in new recruits. They train their folks specifically on how to persuade possible recruits to run up their credit cards, or better yet, take a mary kay sponsored credit card. I lost $3k. They teach their members how to respond to women who tell them they don't have enough money to invest, and make them feel bad for not investing in themselves.They pressure members to buy product ahead of time (instead of ordering after parties) because they would quickly make it back (except for the product the member uses for samples) Also, they get a car too... BUT the member has to maintain their sales quota, their recruitment quota, and their team's sales quota. MK can take that car away at any time. They don't care about women, they just want their money.

    The horrible thing about MLM's is that at a glance they SEEM like a legit business.
    IE: "Hey look you want money fast right? Tell you what, buy a bunch of candy bars from me and then you can go around and sell those to people. Those people pay you directly and they get the candy bars RIGHT then so that's money in your pocket! No need for you to wait for us to cut you a check because you are your own boss!" And now they got you nodding along and you are like, ya okay that seems fair. I invest some of my money in products and then I sell the product for profit.
    But then once you start nibbling on the bait they are all like, "But why to go around door to door asking people to buy your candy bars. You are the boss now. What you want to do is recruit other people that will buy a whole BUNCH of your candy bars so they can do the leg work of selling them." and they get you nodding to this idea because what's wrong with that right? I mean if you decided to open up a candy store you would, of course, hire employees to sell your candy. But they just sort of handwave over that if you had opened a candy store your employees wouldn't have had to pay to get hired on.
    They also like to gloss over another factor. If Bob tries to recruit me to buy Bob's candy bars and resell them, and I'm expected to recruit Steve to buy my candy bars to resell them, why didn't I just direct Steve to Bob? Why in the world am I playing this strange middle man here. Steve's not my employee but his own boss, but I still profit off of him because he's also my customer?
    If this were a legit business it might be Bob recruits me to sell candy bars. Sure perhaps I buy stock from Bob, and so when I sell candy bars I keep the profit instantly. Bob says to me, we don't have enough people selling candy bars in this area, so if you see any good people send them my way and I'll get them set up. So I meet Steve and give him Bob's business card. And that should be the end of it. If Steve decides to join the company as a candy bar salesman, he gets his stock from the source, not from me.

  • @thecomfortinthesound
    @thecomfortinthesound 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Anyone aware of the “direct marketing” schemes? Very similar to this, except people invest their time more or less, rather than money up front. Same multi level pyramid, same promise of “owning your own company,” etc. Less discussed but equally insidious.

    • @thecomfortinthesound
      @thecomfortinthesound 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@evanhines9723 had to google that, but yes it fits the “direct marketing” paradigm very well. It’s basically cold in person sales where people get paid dirt commission, but put up with because they’ve been duped into thinking it’s a fast track to success. Really the only way to “succeed” turns out to be duping other people.

  • @frisbyart
    @frisbyart 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I was part of two MLMs, but in my defense I knew nothing about them years ago. CutCo was my first one, and boy was that a serious stress, then I went with Legal Shield, which in itself wasn't AS bad, but was still rather stressful when it came to the recruitment parts (some of us just are NOT good at contacting and selling things to people, especially when we do not like doing that at all, and this is what CutCo pushed for us to do for an HOUR at the office, despite the fact that some of us had things to do after those annoying ass meetings).
    Now, I tell anyone I know to avoid MLMs like the cancer they are. Last or two I overheard a friend saying she was buying from another friend, and that she was also considering joining her team. The team? Fucking LULAROE! I have never yelled "No" to someone so fast and loud in my life, and I could NOT share enough videos of that scam to her to get her to understand it. Her friend left Lularoe too, but she lost a lot of her money through it in the end.

    This isn’t an mlm that’s in this case. It’s a pyramid scheme. Which is worse. I was never forced to buy inventory when I was in Beach Body. I never had to buy $500+ of product to then go and sell to make it back. The sales came directly from beach body and we made money on what we sold as well as what our downline sold. Yes I bought some product but it was the product I used because I wanted to and was already buying it. I never expected it to be a job or make a ton of money. When I arrived at the Starbucks there was another person who gave me the whole spiel, I didn’t know why but I knew it was some sort of a scam, I said I’d think about it and ended up declining but I never really knew why, just a feeling.

    The side business - motivation materials, subscriptions to "tape of the week" programs, etc. are often where the money is in these scams. Technically, the MLM itself is "legit", but the materials programs exist within the "upline" business - and there is enormous pressure to subscribe to these programs to "ensure that you build the business" successfully *wink*.

    If you haven't watched Knowing Better's video about MLM. Basically they have to keep an 80/20 rule where 80% is customers and 20% is people in the company. If you've got too much from employees you're illegal.

    Judge Judy is actually arbitration rather than small claims court, it's just presented as a court room to make better TV. The reason people go on Judge Judy is because the show pays for whatever is awarded by Judy, so the respondent in the case didn't have to pay any money themself.

    MLM is what Shannon Watts was doing before her husband murdered her. According to the investigators, the financial strain of supporting her MLM business was a contributing factor that caused Chris to snap and murder her and his children. I am not saying it's a good reason, but it's part of the plethora of terrible decisions that the Watts family made, which led to tragedy.

    Instead of buying 5k into a mlm, when you could buy into apple or Microsoft or another Giant. Best part? You have to do nothing! Even if its only a share or two, you will 90% likely be able to sell at a profit after a few months. Imagine the profit after 12 years!
    All for the low low cost of the same buy in, and ZERO work!
