I didn't know who was going to play him, since no one in the cast seemed like they'd be perfect for the role.
And Jim Gaffigan seems like one of those comedians who should have been on SNL (as either a writer or cast member) ages ago (like, the mid-to-late 1990s when Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond were on there). Maybe he was one of those conedians who tried out for or was offered a chance to be on SNL and didn't make it or turned down the offer.
I said Gaffigan as soon as Walz was announced but people said No.

I just had to stay up to watch the season premier of SNL, and it didn't disappoint! Maya Rudolph was on point! She absolutely killed it with her impression of Kamala Harris!I loved the way she called the President, "JaBiden!" 🤣🤣 Jim Gaffigan was absolutely hilarious as Tim Waltz! His dance moves were so cool! 🤣🤣 Andy Sanberg, James Austin Johnson, and Bowen Yang were dead on! The legendary and multi-talented comedian Dana Carveys' impression of "JaBiden" was insane! Fans of comedy around the world have been waiting on this premiere episode. SNL did everything brilliantly and therefore this moment will go super viral. This will be a Classic Cold Open for the SNL American Pop Culture & The Nielsen television record books.
For the 50th I’d be happy if the cold open had a solid sprinkling of alumni. I think the post-Lorne era of SNL could be a balance of best of today with a deep bench of legends. Shrink the cast a little bit and use the legends to mentor not just the performers but also the writers. Somebody learned something from having three all-timers (and Gaffigan) on set this week and we got a killer sketch on top of it.

Used to have an old tape from SNL in the Dana Carver days that was from a Mother’s Day show where they had some of their mothers on. Dana’s mom had him doing some impersonation drills where she would name an actor and he would do them, sometimes just a noise or one word.
It was choice.

Yes! Good impersonation makes you realize something about the person being impersonated. For example the way Biden goes in for a handshake with his hand at the wrong height initially.

Everyone was so great here, but Dana Carvey? He is so great at just totally becoming the person he is impersonating! All of the mannerisms, the voice, the pacing, the physical traits...he is the GOAT!

Dana is a talented guy but that was weak and hollow and cynically over the top. Joe sounding spaced out is over the top in real life but it looks, feels and sounds different. And it's not repetitive.
