@Chad Kneller the system of MLM is exposed for the fraud that it is through analysis of the mandated income disclosure. While yes if one was a sociopath and recruited many many people into a program where 99% of people lost money and managed to keep them in it then the recruiter would be successful 1% of the time statistically. It needs to be framed for what it is tho which is an opportunity to scam people with a false dream to take their money and if that to you is success in life you need to find Jesus or Allah or Buddha and learn some love for your fellow man.

    • @MrSlanderer

If something is so easy to do that anyone can do it without any training, and it's not risky, then either
      - your are the first person on the whole planet who came to that idea, and it will only work while no one else finds out about it (and then why try to recruit others?)
      - or it will pay you minimum wage in the BEST case scenario

Exactly. Like I get that to be self-employed, you do have to purchase things to sell or make, people do that all the time. However, it’s not self-employment if you’ve essentially just become a distributor and are saying you work for “Beach Body” or whatever it may be.

I attended an MLM presentation for long-distance phone service at the behest of a friend who was totally into it . About 30 people were there, this was in a rural county, western Washington.
The presenter looked like Alex Baldwin, big, sharply dressed, all the confidence, the typical package.
He stated that his company wanted ten percent share of the local phone market, which in the area being discussed was about 10% of 4000 phones, or 400 phones. The deal went like this: get 40 people to sign up, and of those 40, 2 become sales reps. They must also get 40 to sign up, and of those, 2 more reps, and so on.
Each of these iterations represented a new level, and when you got to the 7th level you would be making tons of money.
About 15 minutes in, I asked him if he was aware of the concept of "geometric progression". I could see immediately his response. Everyone was looking at me . I explained that there were 5 people in that group from my half of the county, the half with 4000 phones. If we 5 all got 40 people to sign up, that would be 200 customers, and when just one of THEIR new sales reps at second level got 40 more, the market would be saturated, and nobody could get beyond 2nd level...(which pays about $30/month. At the time, I made that in 2 hours just going to work without calling every person I know trying to get them to sign up). The guy's fists were clenched, the audience could immediately see what was going on, and several of them got up and left the presentation. I, of course, fled the scene, having completed the mission. I destroyed the guy, and my friend was really pissed off and eventually quit the program after realizing it was a scam.

@@Yazolight They want to get 400 customers., if five of us each sign up our required 40 customers, that's 200 customers. Level one, you are already half way to market saturation.
But, if the market and the number of people you could call were huge numbers, then, you could go to a higher level.
I think we got a dollar per customer per month. At level two , we get a dollar and a portion of #1 level's gross. I don't recall the actual numbers. Of course, if you are level two, you are getting a little from each of 40 people below you. Level three, well...soon you are getting hundreds of people below you, all paying a little bit.. Then ...finally.. at seventh level, I guess you get to wear a gay looking suit and stand in front of a jet...which is what these two brothers did, endlessly, in their glossy magazine . They did have some legal problems also, of course.
STILL...the product they were selling was fine. But the marketing of that product was classic Pyramid.

It’s sad that people take advantage of one another especially in that part of the LDS community. I almost got sucked into Amway. However this 'opportunity' gives you the freedom to become your own boss. So just like starting your own company costs money, this does aswell. If the concept wasn't brilliant, this wouldnt exist.

Many years ago my then-girlfriend's sister tried to get me involved in MLM. I am not going to name the company, but I'm sure you can figure out which one it is. (It's the one everyone hates.) It was an intense hard-sell. At one point she asked me to meet her at a restaurant so we could we could discuss her sister's upcoming birthday party. Instead, she wanted to talk more about MLM. She even brought one of her MLM friends to try to convince me. I asked about the products they sell, but all they wanted to talk about was how much money I could make. I wasn't interested, but I got a free meal. She asked me not to tell her sister about our conversation, and I felt bad really about that. It felt like I was cheating on my girlfriend... with a MLM. Anyway, I finally told my girlfriend, and she got super mad at her sister. Apparently, her mother had been recruited into the company, and then she recruited several family members, and eventually everyone kinda started hating their mother. When her sister tried to recruit me it reignited the whole mess all over again. A year later I was approached by a guy at a restaurant who asked if we could meet the next night to discuss a "powerful moneymaking opportunity." I instantly knew he was talking about that same company. But, I played along, and I got another free meal.

This is obviously not targeting actual professional ladies-after or men particularly. This is about getting married women with kids who don’t want to have to work that hard and go out to think that there’s some magical way that they’ll be able to make a serious bank from sitting on their ass drinking smoothies and talking to their friends while the kids play

    Dating myself but here goes:
Back in the late 70's, I became an Amway associate. I liked the products and was NOT looking to become rich off others. I got a couple of people to join and they did OK. I moved and the "up-line" wanted to charge me ridiculous fees for shipping product to me that I quit.
Fast forward to the 90's. I am attending Community College when a classmate wants me to hear about a great MLM program. He asked politely and I asked if it was Amway. He wanted me to hear the pitch first. It was Amway. As a matter of fact, it was the same up-line that I had been a member of before and these people knew NOTHING about the leaders of the line. I had personally met them and knew a lot about them.
This new group was TOTAL MLM, didn't even refer to sales, knew very little about their products (except trying to sell Credit Cards and Vitamins). I asked to see their cleaning products and they had NONE of Amway's products. I asked how they sold it if they did NOT use it and they said they wanted to make money.
I ended showing my friend how to demonstrate the products, suggested that he use them, and if he wasn't convinced in the products, to stop trying to sell air.

During Hurricane Fran I saw a friend I had not seen since high school. The storm was eight hours away, and my wife and I were scrambling to get some bottled water and whatever else we could find. The wind was blowing, and the rain was coming down hard, and in the middle of all that craziness my longtime friend tried to get me involved selling long-distance phone cards. I asked him, "Are you f*cking kidding me?" I promised him that we could discuss it later, but at that moment I really needed to take care of a few more pertinent things, like getting back home before the hurricane hit. We exchanged phone numbers, and a few weeks later he called me. All he wanted to talk about were his damn phone cards. He didn't want to tell me about his life, and he didn't want to hear about mine. All he wanted to talk about were those stupid cards. Finally I told him, "It would be nice to get together for a beer sometime, but I'm really not interested in selling long distance." And, all of the sudden, my friend of 15 years no longer wanted me to come over and "grill some burgers." He seemed angry. I was really disappointed in him for that. We have not spoken since.

Too often people look for ways to get rich quick. Somehow it makes too much sense to work hard, pay your bills, and invest the remainder. And, somehow it makes too much sense to do the required market research before starting a business. Some people at my church started a coffee shop several years ago. They were nice people, and they had an ok product, but they had a lousy location and ZERO branding. They also had ZERO experience. They got laid off from their IT jobs and sunk their savings in a coffee shop. Their business didn't stand out in any way. They just assumed people would want to go out of their way to drink their too-strong coffee and eat stale pastries. It didn't last long. I just pray they had a short-term lease on their location.

Warning sign number 1: random stranger starts talking to you and lightly prying for information, eventually inviting you to a meeting that they're having at the hotel you happen to be staying at. The meeting they're inviting you to is supposed to be about products, but they spend as much or more time talking about how much more money you can make by recruiting people than the products themselves.
Warning sign number 2: they market it as "your" business. Any time that someone tries to sell you THEIR business as "your business" or talks about "being your own boss," you can bet that they're pitching you some kind of MLM scheme. They are essentially trying to tell you that your success, or more likely failure, is the result of how much work YOU put into it, not because it's a broken business model.
Warning sign number 3: the products they show you are unremarkable and mediocre. They'll give you free samples and talk them up, but when you examine them in an objective light, these are just different brands of products you can buy off a store shelf. They also probably won't tell you anything about price, because the last part of the pitch is where your money comes into the picture. In order to sell the product, you have to buy it first. See, that's the trick: they sell products by "giving you a business," forcing you to buy products to sell, and then you have to turn around and sell it to someone else in order to make any money. So the person who signed you up gets credit for your entire initial order and you're left to sling it onto other schlubs to try to make money. This won't work, of course, because the products are mediocre and overpriced, often from a brand that nobody recognizes. This is why all of the people who have "been with the company for so long" don't ever sell shit, they just show up to those meetings and talk about how great it is to be making so much money selling these wonderful products, because they have dozens of other saps they've signed up beneath them who are desperately trying to unload this crap any way they can.
Warning sign number 4: they give you promotional materials to borrow, like "here's an audio CD from our big company gathering from last year, where person X gave his big, wonderful speech about blah blah blah..." I actually felt bad about this one, because the guy seemed really nice and it took me a couple of interactions before I realized what was going on, so he lent me several audio CDs that I listened to for about 2 seconds before never touching them again, and I wanted out of this uncomfortably high-pressure situation so badly that I never gave them back to him. Obviously in order to get that stuff, you have to BUY it. So not only are you buying the crappy products, you also have to buy the marketing materials you use to sell other people on the idea.
The obvious question that anyone who thinks about it for more than 2 seconds will ask is "If everyone were to sign up for this type of thing, then who would be left to sell the products to?" Don't be silly! You're not supposed to think about it, you're supposed to just sell products and sign more people up so that you can make even more money while selling fewer products! But that's exactly the problem with an MLM scheme: the more people that sign up, the harder it is for newcomers to make any money. Meanwhile, the people closer to the top continue to make money money without having to sell anything, which means they're not spending any cash on the products, either. So they reap all of the benefit of any sales and newcomers that everyone else is working so hard to get.
And the fact of the matter is, anyone with a hint of knowledge about MLM schemes is going to sniff it out immediately and stay far, far away. So not only is your potential monetary base constantly dwindling when the scheme is actually working, but in reality there are far fewer people who will be willing to even give you the time of day in the first place. Getting 5 people to sign up for such a scheme is going to be REALLY hard, and you probably don't want to use friends and family because they're just going to resent you if they happen to be stupid enough to go along with it. In fact, if you're already part of an MLM scheme and you can't get any customers, your best bet is to just stop immediately and cut your losses. At least that way you won't keep wasting more time and money on a hopeless endeavor that will likely never make you a significant amount of money.
My experience occurred back in 2008 when I was walking into my hotel room (on business) at 12:45 AM when some well-dressed guys were having a chat in the lobby. I don't remember how the conversation started, but I didn't want to be rude, so I talked with them a little bit. Of course, they vaguely started introducing the company and mentioned they were having a meeting the next day and invited me, I think they might have mentioned free samples or something. The company was called Quixtar, which is what, I later found out, Amway had changed their name to because of negative PR. I never got to the point of finding out how much that shit would have cost me, but it quickly became clear to me that even just participating in it would have cost me a significant amount of money that I would likely not be able to recoup. These schemes really are a scam.

I'm not the type of person to ask my family or friends to buy from me, so I went door-to-door distributing all of my brochures and hand-outs. And I did not get a single order. I then did the math and realized I would have to sell about $1000 worth of product just to make up for how much I spent on the brochures and hand-outs... unless I was able to recruit others. People in pyramid schemes are always so condescendingly ignorant. They're so desperate to get recruitments they'll make you feel like shit for ever doubting them. I rememeber back in highschool one of my ex's called me about a "buisness opportunity" that I would be great for and was super vague about every question I asked. She told me to just come to this meeting and a guy will tell me everything. Me being young and knowing nothing about pyramid schemes I ended up going to the meeting with her where this huge douche bag comes in and basically tells us about this buisness oportunity where we can party all day and earn money working from home selling energy drinks. The drink was horrible and the guy even said "it doesn't matter how it tastes! It's not as much about the product really". I was so confused what the product had to do with the buisness to be honest. Also he told us he's made 50 grand but had muddy shoes on and a wrinkly american eagle shirt. I knew something was off when the guy was like "you just need to buy 500 dollars worth of energy drinks". If a Company promises you will be successful you should NEVER have to pay them to work for them lmao. I ended up telling my ex I'm not interested and I'll wait to see her success first which obviously she wasn't happy about because that's the only way people make money is suckering others haha. Fast forward months later all my friends around me are falling for it. I had to deal with people rudely telling me I'm dumb and they're about to be rich and I'm going to miss out if I don't join now. They all eventually realized they got scammed but even to this DAY some say that it wasn't a scam but it was too hard to keep up lmao. There's enough naive people out there sadly for "business's" like this to thrive. If its too good to be true it probably is.

I had same experience but this douchebag was wearing a suit. He talked about how easy the job is, how much he make, parties, how this opportunity is only for chosen ones... (my friend told me to come in this meeting) I didn‘t know pyramid schemes and like you said i also felt something was off. Product was internet shopping at one site. Their plan was to make kind of a mall where you can find all shops in one site. Then he told the starter packet was $900 and i knew something was wrong. I told my friend that i‘m out of this "opportunity" and how i felt about it. He said there‘s nothing to worry and tried to convince me to "get a job" one more time. Couple of years later i saw in news they got these pyramid scheme scammers. They went to jail. It felt so gooood.

As a side note, Kirstin Dunst's 'On Becoming a God In Central Florida' is an underrated dark satire about MLM, and I think does good job depicting how people get sucked in and trapped. Plus, it has gators. Trailer is on YT.

I had a friend who was in Amway. He wasted his life selling the opportunity. I kept telling him, "Dude, just sell me some soap". Cause the soap was really good. I noticed that Amway people can't realize that they're just salesmen. That is all. If they would just sell the dang soap they would have a viable business. Soap is a consumable. Repeat business. But they could not get real. Just sell the soap.

Square Zack Let’s say you are starting a pyramid scheme, and you need 6 people to start the pyramid and make a bunch of money. Then the 6 people under you recruit 6 more people each from their own downline to make themselves a profit. The pyramid grows bigger and bigger. After doing this 14 times over, you’ll be at a point where you reach the population of the earth (ala no more people to add).

    • @brunosmith6925
      @brunosmith6925 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@Square Zack It's called EXPONENTIAL growth. Start with a simple number - say "2", then double it to 4, then 8, then 16, then 32, the 64, then 128... and so on. Keep multiplying the next number by 2 (doubling it).
If you do this with 5, then 5 to the power of 14 = a bigger number than all the people on the planet.

@@sionnachdensolas9787 - I think the point that oxysz was trying to make is that a Ponzi scheme doesn't have to structured as a multi-level network. In other words, yes you are correct that all non-product pyramid schemes are by definition Ponzi schemes but not all Ponzi schemes are also pyramid schemes. Bernie Madoff was the perfect example. He was pocketing large portions of money payed to him by his client to invest and using the rest to pay out as returns on investments that were never actually made. This was completely horizontal and not multi-level.
