Avocado Wood inspired by Saturn

- I recently removed an avocado tree for a client of mine. Actually, there were two avocado trees that I removed. I looked for a couple of pieces that would make an interesting bowl or hollow form. I found what I was looking for. A big enough piece to make a good size project. As usual it was a crotch piece, although I didn’t mention that in the name or the picture I placed with the thumbnail. I like such pieces as they can produce interesting looking wood grain as well as color. What I like about avocado is it is a soft word to turn and when it’s green like this piece is, it’s very pink looking inside. Not that it will stay pink, because they usually do turn brown as they mature, but there is a difference in the color from a green piece that dries naturally and a piece of wood that you found already dead and then turn. there’s just a difference in texture, as well as the color of the wood when you turn it. this video was my first actual narration video. I tried finding interesting things to mention about the wood, as well as my process of thinking, while making a woodturning project. Absolutely gorgeous, and what a striking color! I am fascinated by the entire turning process, even the "boring" part. My brother was a master wood artist and as a child I used to watch with wide eyed wonder as he created his masterpieces. These videos always take me back to those times. Because I do tree trimming for a living and am an active avocado farmer I get a lot of different types of wood. I like to share the different varieties. I don’t buy wood so I use rough blanks. They are often very rough and I use a chainsaw to shape them so they will turn on the lathe. Thank you again for your comments. Appreciate very much. You watching my videos.

Thank you KLee, sometimes I take things for granted. That’s partly why I thought I would share a little bit about the wood, and tree. I we only have a few stares that grow avocados. How would someone know anything about an avocado tree and wood if you live anywhere it’s cold. They don’t grow there as they are a tropical fruit tree. Thank you for your comment.
I have never seen avocado before, it is very nice and colorful! I do like your narration as it gives context to what you are doing, also just listening to a lathe for 10 minutes can make an exciting project kinda dull. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing it!

Awesome, I've never seen Avocado turned before!
Thank you Virginia, we have lots of avocado trees and wood along the coast. I’ve turned so much of it I got tired of turning it. I came into some and said to myself it’s been awhile, let give it a try. It’s a soft wood and turns very nicely. It also warps very badly. And sadly the beautiful color has faded mostly to browns. But it will be a great before and after comparison. Thank you again for your comments.

I am a first time viewer and really was pleased with what I saw. In fact, despite your skill and quality results, had you not been commentating, I might have moved on. I find that I learn best by listening to what people are narrating or saying as they work. I also like to get to know the person I'm watching, for whatever reason. Makes it more engaging for me than the endless repetitive Maple bowl turnings that are out there.
Thank you Jay, I’ve been hearing much of the same from many other comments. I’ve been watching woodworking and turning videos for many years myself. I never thought I’d have anything to share that hasn’t already been covered by someone else. After I saw a few people turning without commentary I finally decided make some videos. It helped me get started. Now it’s time for the next step. Public speaking to me was worse than death as far back as I can remember. And that’s been awhile. So bear with me as I make this transition. Great video and very good narration. I obviously like narration that is informative and this was very informative indeed. Also, I had absolutely no idea that avocado wood could be so colorful and good to turn. I started planning my retirement in 2015, by looking for a property in a nice warm climate. I found a good one in the central mountains of Puerto Rico and will move there in July. In the past 3+ years I've purchase most tools to build my shop on my 2-acre property, and now that I know how pretty avocado wood is, I'm going to be turning quite a lot of it, as avocado trees are plentiful and lots of times they must be cut down.

I didn’t mention that besides doing tree work for the last 30 years I’ve also farmed avocado trees and citrus for the last 40 years. They are one of my favorite trees to grow when they grow well. And I love the fruit as well. I am working on Woodturning as a side project for now, I hope I can turn the videos and woodworking into my retirement plan in the near future. Wow, that wood look amazing ggod ! I worked in the avocs during my time in a kibbutz , i love the fruits and the smell of the wood when burned in a fireplace. Now I'm craving to get a piece of avocadowood to turn a bowl of it . Thanks for showing it to us !

Thank you Walt. It took me a long time to start Hollowing. I friend of mine was a fantastic hollow form guy. He had it down. He gave me a tool to start. By the time I finally got going it was too late. He fell ill and I lost his support. So get started before it’s to late. Best to you my friend.

Great looking vessel. Makes me want to jump on the lathe and make something from some green wood. Most of þú stock is dry and hard so I don't get those showers of ribbons.
I know what you mean. When I started turning all I wanted to see were those long ribbons fly off my tool.

Commenting about the type of wood, where does it come from, its density, evirything about it is interesting and i agree with you. I often look at the beginning and the end.
Commenting the turning itself makes it really more interesting.
I think you could go really deeper into your comment giving the context of how to obtain the wood, how rare it is, what is the best finish for it... well, give us as much as you can do. Otherwise, i'll continue to speed up the video and/or jumping from the beginning to the end.

Thank you Joanna, appreciate your encouragement and those are the things I like to know as well. As I was working on this project I was having a little trouble with a stub that kept knocking my tool away. When I finally got rid of it I didn’t turn up the lathe speed. Then I finally figured out I need more speed I started having fun. So when editing I decided I should share my experience. It made the whole process a little more interesting for me. Thank you very much for your comments.
Like many others, I liked the piece, the commentary and seeing avacado wood for the first time!
I think you'd be safer and more efficient if you stop the turning and simply cut the problem with a saw.

So would it be correct to call you arborist? I've been turning for about 10 years now. It's kind of amazing how much free wood you can find by simply keeping your eyes open and being alert. I live in Maryland so no Avocado in these parts, It's very pretty wood.
I like the narration, Being an arborist or having worked with wood for so long gives you a unique perspective. So a little story about the wood and/or how you acquired it great, I mean who doesn't like a good story. The pace of this video was great, it's always a good idea to show at least some of the cuts in real time speed, but after that some sped-up footage is fine as well.

Thank you Daniel, sorry, I am not an arborist. At least not in the “ I earned my degree in arbor culture” I’ve been a citrus and avocado farmer since 1979. I’ve also been a licensed tree trimmer business since 1995. I have more wood than most wood Turing groups I have ever heard of. And fortunately for me, I live in an area that is considered a sub tropical climate. It rarely freezes here and many trees that grow in tropical climates grow in my area. So the variety of trees in my area are so very diverse that I have so many choices that’s it’s overwhelming. Partly why I try so many types of wood. I have my favorites. And I like trying new types of wood when I get the chance. I recently decided to share the different types of wood I have found and share them with others. I am still working and have a limited amount of time to turn wood. I’m hoping that in the near future I can semi retire and do more woodworking and turning. Best to you my friend. Thank you Paul, yes the plan is to let it dry and turn it a second time. Then remove the base.
Amazing colour! Does it stay pink or does it fade to brown over time? I have an ornamental plum tree which has lovely pink wood when fresh but it rapidly goes to a bright brown when exposed to the air.
Thanks Peter, in my experience, most woods turn brown with age. Though there seems to be a little difference in a green turned piece of wood and one that is dead and dry already. I just glanced at the avocado piece. The pink has dried to a light brown already. I’ll probably get it back on the lathe in the future and show how it’s doing. I’m working on the finishing of some older pieces now.
