Woodturning Weathered Purpleheart

  • This is one ugly chunk of wood, rough cut, weathered, and wedge shaped. Or is it a misunderstood slice of potential? See it transform into something more in this week’s project video.
From the Port of Seattle some decades ago, this wood was trimmed from a pier and discarded as waste, and later found and brought home by a craftsman that saw something of value in it. When time went by and the craftsman passed on, this chunk of wood was headed to a fire to be burned away. That’s when one of my subscribers stepped in and said, “I know a feller that can do something with that!”
Special thanks to Anthony of PNW RC on TH-cam for sending me this chunk of potential! I appreciate being that “feller” you thought of!
Check out his channel here, it’s very interesting and surprising both!

These verses stuck out to me as I studied this week. Jesus Christ spoke these words, find comfort in them and seek him. He is my Savior and I’d be truly lost without Him.
    Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

This right here, what Joyce said! I am also very impressed at how much more you made out of that wood than what it would have been if you turned it as it was.

Who would have thought that such an unprepossessing chunk of wood would yield up such wonderful colours? And those flashes---as though someone were signalling with lights. Gorgeous bowl.

Thanks for this video. The fact that you show your mistakes and how you fix them helps me. It shows that you don't give up and that I shouldn't either. You have learned from your mistakes and that when I screw something up I should keep going. That's how one learns. It sounds basic I know, but that's how to learn. Thank you sir and keep up your good work.

Great looking bowl. Thanks for the scripture. I'm 62 years old and last Friday I completed reading The Holy Bible. Better late than never. I'm going to start back over with Genesis and read it again. God bless you sir.

@Tom Cannon - Thank you for giving the Men at the VA the Hearts, that really touches mine. I used to deliver emergency blood platelets to the VA in West Los Angeles. If it was during the day or early evening I'd see guys out front for a smoke. Every single one of them had obvious multiple physical traumas that were never going to be made whole. I'd get choked up every time. My Dad volunteered for the Marines at 18 y.o. and he served in Korea.
His wounds are not visible to anyone but his family. No one gets out unscathed.
      Thanks again Tom.

This is the first time i have ever seen purple heart used for something besides an industrial wood , we use it on flatbed trailers for heavy equipment . When its green it smells quite strong when cutting it . That bowl TURNED out awesome .
