Black Cherry-Decisions, Decisions - Wood Turning

- I received this piece of Black Cherry and was immediately confronted with the decision of how best to use/turn it. It has a burl section and I try to decide how to incorporate that into a turning using the piece it it's entirety. I also use a technique that is new to me that I learned from Gord Rock. One of the prettiest pieces of wood, beautiful color and grain. Of course, your ability just made it perfect. Very nice Phil!
Thank you very much! 😊
That black cherry really looks great. Great job. You really have an eye for turning great pieces
Thank you, Earl! 😊
Black Cherry looks great can't go wrong with the fruit woods.
😊
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil great trick you played on us at the beginning. What a fantastic piece you made for us all to enjoy this week and guess what no ET perhaps he's gone home. Looking forward to your next creation. Thanks Phil.
Glad you enjoyed it, John. Thank you very much! 😊
You did a wonderful job on the Tennessee Black Cherry!!! Being from Tennessee you made me proud. Have a great day. 😊
Very cool, Mary, thanks! 😊
It’s beautiful love the black Cherry grain the piece is like a window then you open it Phil great job👍
I appreciate that, Jeff, thanks! 😄
Oh,I was worried the bark would fall off,but you did a masterful job!
Thank you, Ron! 😊
I admire the skill and artistry. The contrast of the very smooth, light body of the piece with the highly textured, dark bark makes a striking piece.
You GET it, Janet! It's that contrast that has me doing the kind of turnings that I love to do. Thank you! 😊
It's always a good day when you get 3 pieces out of one! I kinda like it the way it is off balance with the bark on one side and not so much on the other! Reminds me of me! Lol, off center and bark on one side! Ha ha haa!
LOL!
Gorgeous, Phil. I’m with you on that ‘burl’ being a cut off branch. Going straight off to watch that one.
Cool, thank you, Bill! 😊
Phil as normal what a beautiful turning very educational I love your videos
Thank you so much, Robert!
Very pretty black cherry bowl! I love the bark live edge Phil. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
I appreciate that, Kim, thank you! 😊
Lovin your work Phil... The Rebel and yourself, very inspiring Turners...👍👍
Thank you so much, Darren! 😊
Another beautiful piece. I would love to see you turn the other 2 pieces and then display all 3 finished with pieces with a before and after.
I did turn the little cut-off from this which turned out to be a healed-over branch section. I'm not sure where the other half of the larger piece even is, right now but I like your idea, Glenda! If you want to see the small section, it's here:

👍👍👍 A fearless master.
As entertaining as usual,
I hope we do not have to wait 100 years for the other pieces.
Thank you Carsten Sweden
Thank you, Carsten! No 100 year wait, but maybe a little while longer. So much wood, so little time... 😊
Hi Phil, that is a really pretty Bowl. I love the color. Thank you so much for your video's.
Thanks for watching, Terry! 😊
Magnificent craftsmanship, again! Mr. Anderson you are inspiring others to try and or raise their level in woodturning. As such you need to set an example of proper safety practices such as not wearing any jewelry or loose clothing. Today you wore a watch breaking the no jewelry safety rule.
Thank you very much, Charlie! I like to think that each turner will exercise as much caution as they feel necessary to ensure their safety. Some will require more safety practices than others. As long as you are comfortable with yours is really all that matters. I've seen some turners practice what you call the "no jewelry safety rule" but than do something I consider un-safe. But, as long as it works for them, I'm satisfied.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Better safe than sorry. I am a tool and die maker and have seen some horrendous things.
There are not enough words in the english language to describe the excellent beautiful work you create. Once again you brought a masterpiece to our eyes. Thank you so much.
Wow, thank you, Thiantrus! I appreciate your uplifting comment! 😊

Thank you, Michael! 😊
Great bowel Phil, i love the black cherry cherry wood, that is a unique piece of work. 😂
Thanks, Ken! 😀
Phil, I’m flattered that you would mention me. What’s even better than that? My wife was watching with me and now she thinks I might be a big deal. Unfortunately, she knows me so that will only last for about 45 seconds! LOL! Seriously, Phil, thanks for the shout-out! I appreciate it. The bowl is gorgeous, my friend, just as we have come to expect when you go to work. Yes, I was a bit confused when you put a different piece on your woodworm screw. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one! Great video, buddy! Keep ‘em coming!
You always crack me up, Gord! I love your self-deprecating humor! I also like to try to get inside your mind when you are doing those sly smiles in your videos. It's scary in there, my friend! LOL! Thank you so much, Gord, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
No reason to be afraid, buddy. It’s warm and cuddly in here. Of course, tomorrow’s Hallowe’en so things could be different!! 🎃🎃😱😱

Thank you, Ned!
Beautiful piece Phil, I enjoy listening to your commentary as you work... thanks for my weekly adventure in the Shady Acres Woodshop...
Thanks for listening, Ruthlynn! 😊 I feel like we are all just hanging out by the lathe shooting the breeze. It's fun!
You certainly make it so 😊
.Thank you for the awesome tip for buffing.
Happy to help! 😊
👍 Always enjoyable videos. Not more to say except “another (great) one for the books”. Stay safe and well to keep the videos coming. And as someone mentioned, more than one a week would be great. Cheers, Tom
Thank you for your kind comment, Tom! I'm struggling to get out one video a week, right now. I'd love to get a few ahead, but it ain't lookin' good! LOL!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I appreciate all that you do. Thanks again. Cheers, Tom
Great job Phil, sure like that finish. Bruce/Canada
Thank you, Bruce! 😊 Cheers!
HI Phil super finish. cool
I'm glad you like it, Manjit, thank you! 😊
You were initially not too happy with the outside shape Phil, but in your always considered approach with very minimal adjustment it turned out absolutely great. The big voids under the bark in a few spots really stood up brilliantly throughout the turning. By not trying to take out all the wood where the bark was thin was brilliant, it ads a huge amount of interest in the finished bowl. As always, the grain on all pieces of Cherry looks 'a million dollars' & the finish too. Another top piece as we all sat back to enjoy the experience with you. Congratulations, Don.
I'm so glad you came along for the ride, Don, thank you! 😊
Another one friend amazing piece and grain.i love it works.
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Very nice bowl enjoyed watching that 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, Brian, thank you! 😊

Love, love, love it!
Thank you, Kathleen! 😃
That trick with the scratch pad on the sander is AMAZING! Thanks for sharing. The cherry bowl is very nice. I like it.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching, Dennis! 😊
Nice job Phil. I have a standing weeping cherry that is marked for demo. I have slabbed pieces of one trunk that broke off last spring. Beautiful wood. Can't wait to turn some of the 30 plus burls on the base of the tree. A little tip for cleaning your acid brushes that I learned from my dad. Ammonia will clean any type of shellac product. Used it on my pigmented shellac brushes for years. Saved from having to use alcohol.
Thank you, Matthew! Oh, my, you are all set for Cherry for years to come! And burls, too! Wow, good for you! Thanks for the tip!
Lovely, great colors.
Thank you! 😊
Gorgeous bowl, Phil. 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Beautiful bowl Phil!! I'm sure others have already said but that's not burl. It's just where a branch broke or rotted off Looking forward to your next video
Enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you! Yes, I came to that conclusion in the video, as well. I still think it's turnable, though. 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop You're welcome and waiting to see it :)

Beautiful grain in the black cherry, Phil. You did the piece proud! I especially appreciate the tip about buffing with the 3M pads. Great idea. Thanks!
Thanks, Greg, glad you like it and happy to help! 😊
another absolutely lovely piece Phil :)
Glad you enjoyed it, Matt, thank you!
Love the bark good job
Thank you, Bill!
Hi Phil
Lovely little bowl, the bark looks like dark chocolate clinging to the edge of the rim.
I havnt turned for a couple of days, I’ve been loaned a big dust (2mt high filter bag 2hp motor) but I’m going to mount the motor and fan unit on a ply base with castor wheels so then being a smaller footprint without the filter bag it will fit in the shop,it will hook into the 5inch hose that goes through the wall to outside and discharge’s onto a drum full of water which stops the dust blowing around.my old 1 hp unit is past its use by date so looking forward to less sanding dust when this is up and running.
Thanks again for sharing ,allways something to learn while being entertained by your channel.
Regards from NZ
Thanks, Mal! Sounds like you have your dust collection all figured out in the best possible way. Those big bags can certainly get in the way. It will be good for you to get up and running again! 😊
Beautiful wood- looks good to me
Thanks, Lynda! 😊
Gotta love black cherry. I’m fortunate to have several trees and have turned well over 100 cherry bowls plus lamps, vases, pens and boxes. I have several big burls waiting for me. One is big enough I’ll need my chain hoist to mount it to my Robust American Beauty. As always, enjoyed the video. Loved the comment, “must be what I want cause I keep doing it”. Probably woke up my wife with my laughter. Breakfast is always better Friday mornings with a turning from Phil. Thanks again for sharing.
Such a great comment this morning, Wayne! You gave me several chuckles. Thank you for that! 😊
Another beautiful job Phil. Brightened the start of one more rainy Scottish day. A workshop day I think.
Sorry for the rain, Kevin, but a Shop Day will compensate for a lot of moisture! Enjoy! 😊
I love the way you let the wood tell you what it wants to be. Very best wishes from Ohio.
Thank you, Jerry! Sounds like you and I have a great respect for the wood! 😊
Oh the bark! Just gorgeous. The colors and finish are so perfect!
Thank you, Susanne! 😊
Very nice bowl. Love the Black Cherry.
Beautiful work 🎉
Thank you, Sandra! 😊
I got so excited, I am commenting before I even watch it. I love black cherry, can't wait. I have a cherry tree behind my house, about that big around, with a burl that goes all the way around the trunk, it looks so tempting, sitting about 25 feet in the air, but the tree is happy and healthy, so that giant ball of mystery will stay up there until something changes.
And it finished up really great. Beautiful wood.
Good for you, William! If the tree is happy and healthy, it should live out it's life un-molested. But, I know it's hard to leave that burl just hanging up there! 😊
All the guys I've talked to that "harvest" burl say as long as you only take a piece of the burl vertically the tree will be unphased. One guy collects pine pitch and even spreads a layer on when he's done, and will come back a few years later and take another chunk lol. Idk how hearty black cherry is though! Always fun to see the trees that look pregnant 😋
I am still young, I can wait for a while.
Quite a challenge😃looks good
Thank you, Paul!
Simply said Awesome!
Glad you liked it! Thank you, Sylvie!
That bowl is beautiful. I can picture sunflower heads in the bowl.
