- You'll have heard of the Jacobite uprising in 1715, but it's what they don't say that Scottish history tour guide Bruce Fummey reveals in another of the tales from Scotland;s history that's often forgotten. The Jacobite rebellion (I prefer uprising) of 1715 ended at Sherrifmuir so they say, but there was more to it than that.

Under John Erskine, Earl of Mar some Jacobites in 1715 went further south, and even crossed the border for what I've heard described as the last battle on English soil. Whether or not that's true the Battle of Preston on the same day as Sherrifmuir should also be recognised as the end of the 1715 Jacobie uprising.

Just a wee correction. Not a dig. Whisky is referred to as scotch. People are referred to as Scots or Scottish.
As a sassenach, I have only a passing familiarity with Scottish history but this guy is such an excellent presenter I shall watch more. You should have your own TV series old chap.

@@slamont2911 a Highland name meaning southerner, or basically anyone south of the Highland line, a very interesting series of videos.
Sassenach means "speaker of the Saxon tongue" ie Old Scots as spoken by Low Landers. It does not mean the English.

I didn’t realize this battle occurred and like many Americans thought Culloden was it. Descended from Lowland Clans and Northumbrians, including a Forster, it sounds like I may have had ancestors on both sides at Preston. You just got a new subscriber!

I love your enthusiasm for scottish history bruce, you remind me of my english teacher in high school, he had that same enthusiasm and he was the reason I love the english language to this very day, he understood its importance to his pupils future, and he used to tell us and explain scottish history as well, it was not part of his remit, but he did not let that deter him from giving us the odd half/hour here and there, Mr Homes, thank you sir for opening my mind to the truth

I was excited to find this video! An ancestor of mine, my several great grandfather, was captured at Perth. Sylvestor Proffit was captured and sent to America. The ship manifest lists him as being someone who was not going to be indentured. However, he was sold into indentured servitude upon arriving in the area of Jamestown. I have read this was sometimes done by the captain of the ship to pay for the passage. After serving out his time he was given a land grant and ended up owning quite a bit. I am very interested in my Scottish ancestry and hope to learn more. Again, thank you for posting this video because I never hear about the Battle of Preston.

This is a history of the common people and how the interests of the ruling classes will always ride roughshod over them. It was heartbreaking and showed that the real battle in Scotland and England wasn’t between Hanoverians and Stewarts, but between the aristocracy and the rest of us. Well done mate, I would have broken down relating that story. Look I was brought up in East London, but I’m a bit of a mixture genetically speaking - what I call hybrid vigour. Good on yer mate, keep on telling it as it was.
Enjoyed your video. After a decades long search, I recently learned of the path of a Jacobite ancestor from Perth after his capture at Preston to America. Your video helped to fill in some blank spots along that trip with facts delivered with wit. Keep up the good work.

What homeland? Your clan were peasants to a laird. As it was so shall it always be. Don't die for a "cause" that you will never profit from. The Laird will always profit from your death for he will gain more land. The land that you will get will be the grave.
@@tracybeme1597 Yes, you are right. My great-great-great grandfather was a grounds keeper to a Lord. His brother was a butler. The family was finacially forced to flee Scotland for America. My great-great grandfather, 15 when he arrived in America, later became to president of what is now Esso. So, yes, the family thrived in the new world.
But I’ve been to Scotland. I love the country. I love the people. I love the history. And, I would move back in a heartbeat.

As a MacRae born in Australia to two Scottish parents who immigrated in the fifties on the "assisted passage" living in Scotland for the last twenty years and also a Scottish tour guide (well I was before ahem the lurgy set in) am finding your vids entertaining and informative....and as a MacRae loving how often Sheriffmuir comes up in your vids...am one of the only girls left standing as it were!!!!!! A story not forgotten in Lancashire - a painting ‘The surrender of Preston’ adorns the Blackpool’s Council Chamber, but Preston isn’t landlocked (as stated) it’s been a port since the 14th century.
I live in preston and the bridge where the battle took place was at the bottom of London road, the original was a little further down than the one that's there now
That was the only bit that threw me as Preston Docks (before the whole modernisation) was one of the main reasons for its prominence and later status as the administrative capital of Lancashire.
But then again, it is quite far down the Ribble, so - unlike Liverpool which feeds almost directly into the sea - it would have needed a bit of a journey down the river, before reaching open enough water for proper maneuvers which could quite easily have been wiped out from the banks (Or a decent warship or two).
In fact, I wonder if that's how BAe started in Warton, they were building Anti-Jacobite cannon in the 18th Century and just updated with the times! 😁

I'm 64 now but still remember well the first time I read Devil water. It was a beat up old paperback one of the first books I ever read around 1970 that wasn't a science fiction or sword and sorcery novel. I have to admitt it was the cover painting of the buxom Scottish lass. After reading the first few chapters I was hooked on th😅e story. I'm an American but very interested in history. Later on I got my Bachelor's degree in History. The military history of the Jacobite rebellions fascinated me as we didn't learn anything about that time in the states unless you took a course on British history in college. I was stationed in Germany back in the 80s and hoped to get over to Britain for a short trip but this was the height of the cold war and we stayed on alert almost constantly. It's still on my bucket list
My Scottish ancestor was captured at the Battle of Preston. He and other prisoners were later put on a slave ship and sent to Virginia in America where he was sold into indenture. I have been trying to find out more Scottish history around this time to learn more about how my ancestor lived. I really enjoy what you're sharing!

Now I'm an Englishman and passionate about history, real history not the romantic notion so many adhere to. So good to hear this, I've subscribed to this channel. Too often it's all bigotry about blaming the English and forgetting the facts.
Interesting to hear of the Presbyterian Scots involvement an interesting group of strong opinioned folk, we tend to forget their influence in the Parliamentary forces of the civil war against the Royalists.

I’m so happy I found this video! I just subscribed and will be watching more! I have been researching my ancestry and found the my 7th great grandfather was Alexander Bruce who was captured in 1715 and sent to America of the ship Elizabeth & Anne. Had this not happened I wouldn’t be here today!

Great videos! How about a follow-up video about the escape from Newgate? Or have you already covered that? My ancestor John Mackintosh was a junior officer in the Mackintosh regiment, also held at Newgate (but not part of the escape). His defence (judging by letters of character reference written by firends of his and accessible online) was that he was an unwilling participant, pressured by the clan into joining the march south. His defence must have worked because he continued to have children in Scotland after that, including the daughter I'm descended from.

The historical novel "Devil Water" by Anya Seton details much about the English Jacobite uprising of 1715, and the battle of Preston, centered on the tragic Radcliffe family (Earls of Derwenwater). Recommended!!

Liked and subscribed after 5 minutes. I am McIntosh and you have filled in a few blank places that I have been researching for over 30 years now.. My immediate blood forefather "escaped" to America to join 2 of his Uncles already here. All 3 where part of the Boston Tea Party and other significant Battles of our American Revolution. If I could visit Scotland and look you up, I would show you some of the original documents and personal letters I have. I would gladly buy the first several rounds, and ask and answer hundreds of questions. Most of all I would hope to have a new friend with a shared history. By the way. We have many counties with McIntosh and other Scot names. An entire mountain range in eastern Kentucky named after McIntosh. Legend has it because so many McIntosh settled there and documents show they settled there because it reminded them so much of the Highlands of home. GOD Bless you Sir. Continue your journey.
One of my Scottish ancestors was Dugal MacQueen. He was captured at Preston and ultimately sentenced to transportation. Sent by ship to Maryland where he was sold into 7 years of indentured servitude to a William Holland. I'm descended from his second wife, whom he married in Maryland and their daughter Ruth.
If you prefer famous people, he's also the ancestor of the famous movie star Steve McQueen, my distant cousin. 😎
Our ancestors may have known each other. My grandfather five generations back was a Jacobite leader of Clan Chisholm, known as The Chis. He was transported also, first they tried selling him in Jamaica but he was too fair skinned. Finally sold and indentured in Port Tobacco Maryland.
@@rboston33 quite possible! Although they probably would have been on different ships, because to the best of my knowledge the ship carrying Dugal didn't stop in Jamaica.

I live very close to Preston and the layout hasn't changed a huge amount since that 1715 battle. It's interesting walking around and trying to imagine how hard it would have been for the government troops to attack.
I also find it interesting that Preston was the site for a battle in the civil that also featured the Scots, not far from the same ground the jacobite fought on.

In retrospect, there were other ports that the Jacobites might have used; Lancaster, Sunderland Point and even Preston itself were all substantial ports in the 18th century
Wow. I always thought the last battle in England was Sedgemoor in 1685. Never knew about this Jacobite invasion/rising at Preston.

Gallows Hill in Preston was in the southwest corner of what is now Moor Park. If you look at the streets around there you may recognise a few names.

As a Scottish American I just want to thank you for opening my eyes to emotions within me about the world and shinning light on the history of the human race and history of Scottish and other Celtic people's it's all connected and you convey history in a very entertaining way giving a good laugh with a hint of salt to the wound. As a person in America, history is hard to reach and what is said is conveyed in a funny way thank you. Knowing your history is so valuable it's one of the most valuable things in my opinion and as is clarity.
Scotland isn't a Celtic people... Scotland have been speaking a Germanic language for over a thousand years, and like England it is a combination of Germanic settlers and native Britonnic peoples. Certainly not Celtic.

@@Gary-bz1rf I'm not saying those weren't major factors, but claiming that the Scots were only ever reacting to outside influences is so reductionist it makes them/us seem like puppets on strings. And that wasn't the case.
First you say people are not aware of their history, then you try to dumb things down.
I would rather present this in a pan-European context where power struggles were going on all over Scotland, England (& Wales) and Ireland, as well as across Europe and between all major powers of the time, both on home territory and overseas.
