Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.

Greetings from a Canadian who grew up near a town called Perth and attended The Stewart School in an area called Lanark County, Ontario where the rivers Tay and Clyde cut through the rocky hills. I don't have much Scottish heritage personally but the culture I grew up with was extremely influenced by the Scottish and Irish pioneers who settled the Ottawa Valley and still make up the majority of the population in that region. Tons of connection between Scotland and Canada. Love your content, seem like a lad who would be fun to share a wee pint with. The humor is great.
Western Ontario is full of Scottish place names - I From Tobermory to Strathroy, from Fergus to Leith this area was initially laid out and settled by Gaelic speaking Scots! Are you kidding me? in the middle of this region is the town of Walkerton, the home of Canadian whisky!

My people were from St. Donan's Isle. My grandpa, who came here in steerage with his mother, then went to work at 12 on the docks in New York harbor. His mother worked as a seamstress. Going to night school, he became rich as an accountant---"practicing the ancient ways of the clan " he said in an after dinner speech at the St. Andrews Society.

Very interesting about the thistles, and how they became the official flower of Scotland.In Stirling the wolf is the symbol of Stirling, when Stirling was under attack from the Vikings a pack of wolves raised the alarm and alerted the local population to their arrival.Enjoying these films so much keep them going❤️❤️

Speaking about the links between Scotland and Poland (like this map), there was significant Scottish immigration to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 16th and 17th centuries. Warsaw even had a Scottish Mayor, Alexander Chalmers (Polonized as 'Czamer'). It would be a great topic for a video.

There's a mount in Holyrood Park, E'burgh called King Arthur's Seat. Also Merlin's final resting place is rumoured to near Moffat ( ? ) on a mount who's name I can't remember, right now. "The Quest for Merlin" , I believe was the name of the book that I gleaned that out of.

I was born in Sussex 😢 but have ancestry back in Scotland (Elgin - Isle of Skye - Galloway), I’ve only just found out the our ancestors became part of the MacDonald clan 💪 and I’m still trying to learn more.
Unfortunately I will be the last to carry my surname forward following the death of our son nearly seven years ago.
Loved it when you said about the Romans retreating and the "up yours" remarks 🤣😂🤣 my wife is Italian and I showed here the video to wind her up but she just laughed and said 2good for Scotland".

Talking about Poles, took a few of ma mad Polish friends up to Hillswick in the Shetlands, plenty of bevy and fishing. One thing we all marvelled at was the Brochs, still wild in Hillswick, I do feel acquainted for some reason with my eastern Bros.

I enjoy your video's on Scottish history. I've seen a lot of places you talk about when I traveled there for a month in 1999, I've also learnet a lot from my Grandmother when she was alive. Scotland has had it's ups and downs over the years,but hopefully she will cone into her own soon. I'd love to get back there to try and find my family's homes. I found where my dad was born in Irvine, the house was still there in 99. Greatest Country in the world. Just on the age topic I'm 73.

Hey Brucey, could you start a series on the fascinating origins of Scottish surnames? As a descendant of the McDonalds, MacRandalls, Tyers's (McIntyres), Campbells, and likely other clans lost to the sands of time, it would be fun to learn about the dramas and subsequent tributes of the Scottish clans.
Like who were the original Donald, Gregor, Randall of the surname fame, and why do some surnames have the prefix "Mac", "Mc", or "O", while others don't?

I really enjoyed your synopsis of Scottish history and after that I was linked to your video about a person who stated a prejudicial remark to you. My views are similar to yours but came about from different experiences. My parents were born in Scotland and emigrated to Canada after my dad finished his service in the RAF but ended up getting his next job in in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That’s where I was born. I’ve had 12 visits back to Scotland during my lifetime. Shortly after I was born, my Dad’s job transferred him to Japan for 4 years. I was able to speak a little Japanese then , but at age 4, we had my first visit to Scotland on the way back to live outside of Philadelphia. I was already exposed to people who didn’t look like me, and when I went to primary school, I made friends American kids, many of whom did not look like me. Most of the students didn’t sound like me, because my mum’s accent is a very educated version of Edinburgh accent and that was my primary exposure to English in Japan. My high school was only 10% black, but I had friends who’s parents were a variety of places from around the world. Fast forward to University and I had a roommate from a party of Philadelphia that was almost 100% Black. Fast forward through undergraduate in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Social Work and 30 years of observing people, I have my own thoughts on self definition and prejudice. My life experiences showed me that people and cultures are different from mine. I was lucky to be taught to be curious and accepting of differences. And early on I learned that archeological evidence showed that humans evolved from East Africa and I thought it a fully validated scientific theory when genetic research showed the exact same thing. I had role models in my life who showed acceptance and a diplomatic way of interacting with others. You made the point that you believe that you are Scottish and I agree with you. One bit of propaganda taught fervently and enthusiastically by my grandmother has also led me to support the SNP. But role models and experience has not only allowed me to have open mindedness about people, it has also exposed me to people who are closed minded, concrete thinking and highly prejudicial. Because I understand psychology, I know humans have the capacity for language (in science there’s always a small percentage of exceptions) but language is learned, therefore the content ( thoughts and beliefs) are also learned. So prejudicial ideas are learned and it is possible to open mindedness in some cases as well. But you have to have the capacity to learn ( some people are too concrete and dichotomous in their thinking and may not have the capacity or motivation to change). You have to have the motivation to learn. Prejudicial thinking is very closely related to people’s self esteem. If someone is prejudiced, my view of Socratic response is: So if you are saying that you are superior to others, why would you have a need to tell others they aren’t ( put prejudicial definition). Because my view is that we need to solve problems. Most prejudicial thinking in concrete thinkers was learned like a tape recorder ( oops showing my age). And they don’t have the capacity or motivation to change. Interesting observations of Marines, soldiers, sailors, police and firefighters who changed when they observed a person doing heroic actions saving their lives while risking their own ( and often getting wounded, injured or killed) in order to save them. I’ve seen that change perceptions of prejudice. It also goes to the power of the negative thoughts needing powerful thoughts to teach people to shift their beliefs. Mainly because many cultures teach people that for you to be “good” others need to be in a bad category. Having had family serve in both World Wars and growing up in the 1960’s, I had thought we, as a species, were making some strides in the right direction but then we get con men politicians using hate to divide and I see that we have a long way to go. Peace, love and togetherness was a 1960’s slogan. We need more leaders who have these morals and at every level of society. Sorry, we both got on our soapbox to preach a bit, I miss a lot about Scotland but I really miss the sense of humour! That’s another way of healing. Cheers the now

I love how you spoke about Kenneth MacAlpin. I'm a descendant of that line. I have been born and bred in Scotland for 40 or so years. I also descend from the Kings of Ireland - O'Neill Dynasty and my surname will tell you that I descend from the Normans as well. Eeek.

How could you miss the Battle of Nechtansmere (or Dunnichen Hill as it's sometimes called) in 685!?!
Speak to any Shetlander and they still think of themselves as separate from Scotland. When I was at uni I shared a room with a Shetlander and it took me about a month to figure out what the hell he was saying. Great guy though, and he could drink like a fish, as could pretty much all of the Shetlanders I used to know!
