Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.

I'm a Scot, moved to the US 13 years ago and now live in Virginia. In Alexandria there's a very strong bond to Scotland and Scots culture. Made clear by an annual walk through town in December organised by the Saint Andrews Society.
I was born in Dundee and some of my relatives took a plaque to the Mayor of Alexandria since Dundee is the sister city to Alexandria.
Native American Of the Oneida Iroquois tribe, turtle clan and the Potawatomi tribe on my father's side. Also descended from the Fraser-Sinclair clans on my mother's side. Started watching your site to learn some Scottish history.

That's funny my moms family is Choctaw and my great grandmother and most of here kids are named Frazier, the box Joe Frazier was my uncle. That side of the family is originally from Scotland.

@@davidjones535 as far as I know my family was in Greenbay Wisconsin before they were forced off their land and moved to a reservation in Oklahoma, called the Potawatomi county.( I believe) still doing ancestry work. My great grand mother was full Oneida, Iroquois and my great grandfather was 3/4 Potawatomi.

Being of Powhatan descent it seemed my Scots ancestors were being pushy in that title too, but then we didn't get'em all in 1622 or 1644 so feces occurs.

It can be a bit overwhelming just how much the Scotch-Irish influx has affected our history. Our culture, our music, our military, youd be hard pressed to find a single aspect of American life not affected by them. Not to mention the sheer number of our citizens claiming Scottish ancestry. Our countries are bound by treaties as well as blood ties. There is no modern America without Scotland.
Many Scots Irish were actually from Northumberland and Cumberland, therefore Northern English, of Border Reiver Stock.
Dispatched to the North of Ireland, partly to pacify the Scotland England Border of trouble following the Union of the Crowns and partly to subdue to the Catholic population in Ireland, two birds, one stone.
When subsequent generations emigrated from the North of Ireland to the New World they again settled in areas most suited to them the frontier marked by the Appalachians, hence place names such as the Cumberland Gap, Durham and many more and family names for example Armstrong Nixon etc.
They were Irish actually. "Scots Irish" is nineteenth century invention.
What I’m led to believe. Border Reivers were the hill farmers of Ayr. They used to ride into England and steal cattle etc. They were quite close to the clans of Northern England. With them being neighbours more or less they definitely got on well. Not sure of the exact boundary, I do know Scotland used to go further down the uk map, not exactly sure which year how much bigger etc. They were very similar culturally and definitely planted ulster together. Of the top of my head I’m sure it was Coleraine the English ones went to. Spot on with the place names

It was the Americans who invented the "Scots Irish".
They actully were IRISH - from all over Ireland.
Irishman John Barry was father of the US navy. General Sullivan was a commander in the Revolutionary war - Washingtons troops celebrated St Patricks Day.

I'm an American Heinz 57. Saucy with a bit o' everything in me. Scottish, Irish, Scandinavian/Norse, Native American and Japanese. I started tracing my Scottish heritage, Clan Lamont, but I now find myself fascinated by, caught up in, and proud of, the history of Scotland. I resonate with the scrappy and tough attitude of the Scots down deep in my bones. Likely we all resonate with the Ukrainians these days. True David and Goliath them. I'm from Alabama. Our flag is very similar to the Scottish flag and it's easy to trace many parts of Southern culture to Scottish roots. I love your channel and learning about Scottish history!
Think about some of the similarities between Southerners & Scots-Irish. Traditionally, Southerners made whiskey, loved Jesus & enjoyed fighting. I'm an 8th generation Alabamain & history fanatic.

They were Irish - and called Irish. "Scots Irish" was invented in the 1800s.
@@johnpatrick5307 the term "Scots-Irish" may have been coined later but they brought a different culture, language, and religious beliefs to Northern Ireland. The protestant Ulster-Scots even fought the Catholic Irish and supported William of Orange.

They were only part of the Irish in America in the Revolutionary period - and they were ALL called "Irish".
There were Nova Scotian's (New Scotland) who had immigrated from Scotland to North America and they volunteered from Canada to fight for the Union during the war. Since many escaped slaves and black loyalists settled in Nova Scotia, many of these African-Canadians fought in the famous Black Regiments of the Union like the 54th Massachusetts.

I'm a 5th generation Texan with little to no Scottish ancestry, but I grew up in a rural area where the concept of "clan" is very strong. I love your channel. The comment about your Apache friend is the sort of thing that makes me smile and keeps me coming back!
Great video Bruce. One fact I learned recently might be of interest is that Stonewall Jackson visited Scotland during a tour of UK and Europe prior to the civil war. He spent time in Glasgow, Stirling and Edinburgh. He was particularly interested in religious sites such as cathedrals and went to Pulpit Rock near Loch Lomond during his time in Scotland.

My ancestors came to America in the mid 1700's from Scotland. By 1825, the family had made their way to Mexico to a territory called Texas, just in time for another little war. We have been here ever since. I just stumbled upon your channel. Interesting stuff!
My ancestors came to Canada from Scotland but made their way down to Texas to make wagons for the Confederacy. We have been making that kind of investment decision ever since.

Grant came to Nairn during that world tour. Stepped onto the railway platform to meet a Mrs Mackay whom he had stayed at her family house in Culpepper during the war. Officially the first US President to set foot in Nairn . Great video as always Bruce!
We have the highland games every year here in Texas theres some Scots Irish communities that still speak Gaelic and I'm from a Czech/German community not far away always found Highland culture and language beautiful and I'm glad I found your channel to help me learn more. I'm working on a book about the similarities between Highland and Southern hospitality.

My husband is from Paisley. My grandparents migrated to the US in the 1920s. They were from the highland moors and Glasgow. I lived in Glasgow during the early 2000s. I watched a BBC documentary on the Revolutionary War. It was mostly Scots and some Irish that fought that war. The English still fought in a marching block formation but the Scots and Irish mostly came from the Highlands, hid in the trees and came at them from all angles. It is a great documentary. Finally escaped the clutches of England. Wae Hae Scots.

Many of the Americans especially the ones not living in the east coast big settlements were scottish and irish or scotch irish who took up many jobs claiming land to farm and trappers and hunters, many people who signed the declaration of independence had Scottish or irish ancestry and the American navy was founded by a scotsman.

@@rhebelrhouser2813, I am an avid student of the Scot Irish history of the Appalachians. I did a couple of months of study on the Jack Tales of the Mountains. They are still told to this day and some of them are just downright hilarious. I haven't traced them to Scotland yet and would love to know if the Jack Tales are still very much alive over there.

@@rhebelrhouser2813 the most famous of the Jack Tales is Jack and the Bean Stalk and the second most famous is the Jack and the King's Daughter tale. There are about 50 of them in total or so.

Hello again, Bruce. I'm Evan. I'm from the Dairy State, Wisconsin. I am a complete nerd about all things Scottish. I've been to Scotland 5 times since 2010. I even was a farm hand for three months in the summer of 2013, where I farmed at 4 separate locations in Scotland, which was quite an adventure, lol. I'm also the commissioner for Clan MacKay for the state of Wisconsin. And I also have a good deal of videos on my channel about Scottish and Irish clans that I have uploaded. Your passion for history is infectious. I’m from Southern Arkansas. I was on an iron working job in Vicksburg, Mississippi a few years ago. I kept seeing what appeared to be the top of a large obelisk peeking through the trees from the mill we were building on. Turns out it was a large monument in the park surrounding the battlefield. I got to walk aboard the USS Cairo, one of the old ironclad ships. It was cool as hell.
Her sister ships were built down the hill from my house in Carondolet, MO.
I'm a composer -- in America -- writing a Symphony based on the Civil War & my intention is to write one of the movements about the Scottish regiment that helped win the war. I knew nothing about them but stumbled upon your video -- it is GREAT! Thank you! Pennsylvania, about 150 miles northeast of Gettysburg. Fun fact! Our official State tartan is based on the Black Watch tartan, but with the colors from our State's flag. It's also that tartan I chose to make my first hand-stitched kilt out of.
I'm Canadian but my great grandma (whose maiden name was McKenzie and married into my family surname) was born in Oklahoma. Her father's family lived in Pennsylvania and Maryland for many generations. My fourth great grandpa John M. McKenzie fought in the war of 1812. Got McKenzies in your tree? If so, we are most certainly distant relatives! 😉

US citizen from Indiana. My 3rd great uncle Alexander Montgomery Easton (of the Ayrshire Eastons...and his mother was of the royal line of Montgomerie's) served in the 14th Pennsylvania Cavalry. The Civil War has a lot more nuances and controversies than what students are taught in US schools. I'm in the minuscule minority who is incredibly ashamed of the deification of Lincoln. Love the work you do, Mr. Fummey.

Ever since a stumbled onto your videos about a week ago I have loved every one that I have watched. My Grandfather on my fathers side of the family were Scots that came down from New Brunswick, Canada where they worked on the Miramichi River and then moved to Saint John and came down to the USA from there. My mothers side of the family has been in Maine, USA (where I live) since the 1750's. On my mothers side of the family I have ancestors that fought for the Union at many major battles including Gettysburg. Your take on the civil war Scots is accurate and you always have a way of putting humanity right into the history. I love your story telling skills, your sharp intellect, and your deep knowledge of history . Keep it coming!

Londonderry, New Hampshire (USA) here. I'm a military veteran of Scottish decent that loves the history lessons and "dad" jokes that you share. I especially like when you ask folks to make up their own mind about who is the "good guy" and who is the "bad guy" in various historical events. Makes a person contemplate the the event as a whole, instead of just a small part of it. Why the leaders made the decision they did is as important, if not more so, than the event itself.

As far as I know my father’s family was entirely British. His father emigrated to the USA from Kent, England early in the 19 hundreds when his father was 13. My mother’s family was completely German Catholic, fleeing from Ukraine to North Dakota when they hoped that the territory of the Dakota’s would become German. Both sides of my family fled oppression. But the oppression that Scotland experienced from the British is seldom acknowledged. Bless you for enlightening us, allowing us to accept responsibility without shame! With all my heart I believe that healing occurs when responsibility is accepted. And, at the same time, “shaming” ABSOLUTELY prevents healing!

I’m soon traveling to Scotland for the first time and just wanted to say I really appreciate your videos. As an American of partial Scottish heritage, it has been great learning more about the Scottish culture and what some of my ancestors experienced on both sides of the ocean.

In Federicksburg, VA, there's a massive statue of a local Scottsman physician and American Brigadier General who served in the Revolutionary War and was a hero in the second Battle of Trenton, defending the city. He was born near Aberdeenshire and took his medical degree from the University of Aberdeen, before moving to the colonies. He died in 1777 from wounds from the battle of Princeton. Hugh Mercer Elementary School is named after him. His Apothacary Shop (his peacetime occupation being physician) still stands as a tourist attraction downtown. Every Halloween, town kids place a large pumpkin on the sword the "statue Hugh Mercer" is holding aloft. He is very much remembered and honored to this day. Thank you for the history of our conflicts from the Scottish side.

Enjoyed the video, Ta. I’m a US citizen, Born in Philadelphia but live in Lancaster County which is half the distance between Philly and Gettysburg. My dad was born in Pitlochry, but his family was Scots Irish and Lowland Scots, my mum was born in Nine Mile Burn, but had family from the highlands and Barra. My mum lived in Edinburgh (Tollcross)

@@ScotlandHistoryToursIf I had monetary wealth, I would have loved to have dual Citizenship and residences. Although I don’t regret my choice of working in the mental health field, it’s not a career that provides financial rewards. The ghost of my Gran haunts me with taunts of “ What were you thinking you daft lad”. My first trip over, age 4, my Gran and Granda were living in a tenement and later in council housing. I remember the contrast between the living space and amenities of what we had in the US compared to my grandparents. I realized just how lucky I was and it also provided me with a contrast to other Americans. I never felt the need to compare myself with those Americans who were always wanting more and bigger and those who judged their worth by their possessions. My Dad also experienced homelessness and was a squatter with his family in Edinburgh for about 2 years. Half of my career has been outreach, getting people treatment, food and housing. Although I am an American, I recognize all of history of my family and of Scotland in what I am. And I compliment you on your enthusiasm for all of the facets of Scottish history that you are exploring and sharing. But I also enjoy your wit. It’s one of the things I miss most. Especially when I look at our elected politicians in the past 4 years and I observe the effects our people and communities. We have gone from Lincoln to this? I find my sarcasm more bitter than funny when I ask folks if they slept through history class when they were teaching about Hitler? I think it’s ironic that a country that started because they didn’t want a king and a select few lords telling them what to do and we currently have almost half our people encouraging a similar system now? So getting rid of King George was a bad idea? Does anyone remember how the Scottish enlightenment encouraged critical thinking? Is this the outcome of Bush Jr.’s no child left behind and now we have adults who’s logical thinking has been left behind? See what I mean, I used to have a wee bit of humour, nae mare. That’s why I am thanking you for educating stories and to show me that humour still exists. I need to go back and study the Scottish comedy enlightenment! Cheers the now

Idaho, USA. Paternal grandfather born in Linwood, Renfrewshire, paternal grandmother born in Wemyss, Fife. They emigrated to the USA in the 1910's. I am an American of Scottish, Norse, Scotch-Irish ancestry. They came from Northern Ireland, Scottish Highlands, The Borders and England ( Yorkshire area) and brought to the Colonies the Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1600-1700's fleeing from religious persecution. Eventually settling in Appalachia as some of the original families in the territory. Interestingly, there is a henge and a town in north of England bearing my last name as well as a castle (now a hotel) said to have belonged to Henry the VIII. In roughly 1747 two of my ancestors, 2 brothers possibly from Yorkshire, were commissioned to build the former Rich Hill iron gates, now the gates at Her Majesty's residence in Ireland. I think your channel is fantastic! I have wanted to learn so much more about Scottish history since I was a child. A million thanks for your videos!
My McDonald / McDuffie family were invited to immigrate to South Carolina at bayonet point ! We fought on both sides of the revolutionary War and suffered great loss on the battlefields of the Civil War , Scots made the modern world , the greatest minds and warriors that the world has ever produced ! 😊

Good man. Thanks for your support. I don't have immediate plans on Vikings. If I'm being honest my planning is pretty short term. I look a couple of weeks to a month ahead. At some stage I'll have to go back to work. One of our viewers mentioned using Patreon to crowdfund in the hope that I could fund what is currently an expense to my wife when I'm unemployed. If I build up support with that and can continue these after the confinement is over then I'm sure I'll get round to those pesky vikings a some point.

The vikings were victims of geography don't criminalize them for the actions they took to survive.

I'm from Upstate NY, my mother's maiden name was Howe, her mother's Brown, and she was very adamant about the Scots Irish heritage; my father's grandfather was an Episcopal clergyman from Scotland named Andrews, and my father raised a Presbyterian. It's not surprising so many US presidents were of Scottish extraction - a commitment to education, a lifestyle where hard work is a virtue, and a willingness to strike out into the unknown, are great assets in life (as well as knowing how to hold one's liquor).
I understand that a lot of the British gov't & foreign service are Scottish as well.

Lancaster, Pennsylvania, my maiden name is Bell and my Great Great Grandfather, John Bell emigrated from Paisley to Philadelphia in 1859. My Daughter graduated from Gettysburg College.

Scottish father from Ellon,English mother from Northampton,I was born in Cyprus (army brat 😁) raised on the Scottish side as my mother has no national fervour. Loving the videos Bruce Furmmy.
My mom was from Port Glasgow - I was born & live in NY. We are Highland Scots .. Catholic … I brought my cousins from Scotland to Gettysburg.. they loved it - they were quiet well versed in the American Civil war ..
Well, some of my Scots ancestors were apparently from Lanarkshire, breaking with the Church of Scotland and converting to Mormonism in the 1840's. They emigrated to America and eventually traveled to Utah. All this was unknown to me until DNA tests revealed the unexpected heritage. Love your videos...planning a trip to Scotland now that you've sparked this love for Scottish history!

Me too, my 2nd Great gf was of Scottish/Irish descent from Virginia fought in the Civil war, he migrated to Utah afterwards, married a Mormon woman and converted to the LDS Church, died here in SLC, burried here as well.
Born and raised in Charlottesville Virginia his name was William James Johnston fought in the Union army GAR.
Scots, Scot-Cherokee and Breton (enough Celt here?) from Georgia, USA. Very cool statue! Only wish that its idealism had caught on here. We're only starting to catch up now but it has started!

@@Renegade_Melungeon cheers indeed! If you have access, please check for Robert E. Holcombe of South Carolina in your family tree. Chip Holcombe in Atlanta is a second cousin to my late father. Name is rare enough with the e though, that's family enough for me!
I have a Sherwood Holcombe, born in 1763 in Spartanburg. His wife was Jane Keith. That's the only Holcombe I have in South Carolina. Beyond that, his ancestors were earlier settlers in tidewater Virginia.
Farther back, I have his immigrant ancestor, William Andrew Holcombe, born in Wales in 1640.
@@Renegade_Melungeon your family predates me here. Mine settled in the early 1800s just before the removal. The last name Holcombe is actually Norman which means that they came to Britain with William the Conqueror. He and his descendants put Norman castles all over England, Wales and lower Scotland so it may in fact trace that far back.
I am from Utah, USA and I'm of (partially) Scots/Scots-Irish descent. I enjoy your videos. Everything you said tracks with my understanding of the events of the American Civil War. It's fascinating to learn how our history has impacted other parts of the world. We usually think/talk more about how the rest of the world contributed the US as it is today. (Being a significant melting pot country will do that.) So it's nice to see more of other points of view.

James Webb, former marine and US Congressman who is also of Scott’s descent, has an excellent book on the influence of the Scottish on America and especially the South. It is called Born Fighting.

Just found your videos and I am soaking it up. I am of Scottish decent and living in Wisconsin in the US. During Covid, I dove into doing some research and actually found (and joined) our clan (Clan MacNicol), but admittedly, I am still learning about the lineage as my father's family was not much into discussing our family history. I find it all facinating and have already watched a few of your videos. Thank you for the content and taking the time and effort to put them together.

American originally from Minnesota. My great great grandfather was a Scot who served in the civil war and was killed during a native American uprising.
He was married to a Dakota (Sioux) native lady who was the granddaughter of a chieftain.
He came from Perth Auchterarder (?) and served in the Union army and his gravestone states his regiment.
He also was a frontiersman who held a small outpost for the Hudson Bay Fur Trading Company.
His story was amazing and there is much written about his last days. His one and only son was born eight days before he was mortally wounded.
I would love to see if he is on the list of names in that book you spoke of.

Your understanding of American civil war history is accurate and deep. For your info collection: I am Scot Irish on my father's side. I'm a direct descendent of Robert the Bruce through my grandmother's family, the Abernathy's (who I have been told were collaborators with the British via the Campbell's, but I still hope for a better story.). On my mother's side, I am English German. My grandmother's family was directly related to Thomas Macy, one of the very early settlers of Nantucket Island. He left Nantucket in a huff because he was being shunned for having given shelter to Quakers during a storm. One of his three sons went on to found the Macy's Department Store. Sadly, I'm directly related to one of the other sons. My grandfather's family was "Pennsylvania Dutch," which meant Pennsylvania Deutsch. His last name was Louder. During WWI, in Iowa, it became illegal to speak German in public, including in the German churches. My Great Aunt, his sister, had the brilliant idea of changing the spelling of their name from Louder to Lauder (Harry Lauder was very popular right then). So, in a blink of an eye, my grandfather's family went from being German to being Scot. And I grew up believing Scots loved sausage and sauerkraut. I've no idea about the Irish part, but my father did have a brilliant Irish tenor voice!

Around or close to that Lincoln memorial is a grave stone to a union army sergeant major, killed at Gettysburg, he was an Edinburgh man . It's so long ago since I visited that cemetery, I cannot remember the guys name, just remember being surprised at finding it there.
North Carolina, USA. Pretty sure we strolled thru that cemetery but missed that statue. Would have loved to see it!

President and Civil War General Ulysses Simpson Grant was of Scottish ancestry. He and I are descendants of Mathew and Priscilla Grant who immigrated to Windsor, CT in 1630. People also forget that at the same time as Gettysburg, the Battle of Vicksburg happened at the same time. General Grant was there at Vicksburg and that battle broke the back of the Confederacy.
Matthew and Priscilla Grant were Puritans. Interesting to me, I am Presbyterian. My direct ancestor was Josiah Grant who was a Captain in the Revolutionary War under his cousin, Ethan Allen.
My dad toured Scotland years ago and visited the Grant castle (and bought some Grant's Scotch). Please keep up the great videos. My dad had a penchant for Scotch.
