This one baffles me. The primary draw of a Nintendo Direct is new game reveals. A game-specific Direct is just for giving us new info on a single previously-announced game. I honestly don't understand how these can be considered even vaguely similar. They accomplish totally different things, and when we have no idea what else is coming out this year and beyond after Animal Crossing, obviously only a major Direct will satisfy our curiosity.
I feel like people say “but we just had an animal crossing direct” to annoy people asking for directs by taking “we haven’t had a direct in over half a year” literally. Still baffling but there is a method to the madness

Exactly Arlo, people need to stop acting like the new Animal Crossing game just solves everything and is going to make not having a general direct ok. Animal Crossing is just one game and not a game everyone wants, after it comes out Nintendo is literally dead for new releases. If any franchise were to get the special treatment people are saying Animal Crossing is getting by delaying everything it probably should be like one of their big guns like Mario or Zelda but they don't even pull this crap.
I never realized game-specific Directs and *Directs* were different things?? Either way, it's a large scale production, perhaps with a different intention, but surely time put into one accounts for time taken out of the other.

I kind of assume this delay is because several companies have had their release schedule impacted by the virus. Hopefully it finally comes next week, that's the latest rumor.
I feel they probably haven’t had one because there is no point announcing a game coming out in November and then having to delay it because of the virus and people not being able to work on the game

There definitely was a Direct planned that was delayed, LEGO revealed that on there website. Their LEGO Mario page stated that it was originally supposed to be revealed in a direct.
Ky White it was GAME’s website and was likely a mistake, they’re not likely to announce something like that in a Direct a la Ring Fit and Labo.
Could have just been a mishap but either way there was definitely a delay in there somewhere.

I think Arlo is gravely underestimating how badly the coronavirus affects a business like Nintendo. It is a Japanese company one small sea away from the heart of the initial outbreak in China, and an international company that is also systematically affected by the recent acceleration of worldwide cases. So they've been dealing with this internally in Japan since January, but now in March they are all the more affected by the ever increasing economic, logistical, and social issues that come from a growing worldwide pandemic.
I expect coronavirus IS delaying the Direct, but not out of respect for those affected like the tsunami. Rather, the difficulty of coordinating all of the projects, partners, and deadlines needed to do a worldwide Direct in the chaos of a world in a pandemic is probably the reason.
So, we may very well not get a Direct until the summer (with even that in question due to cancellation in E3). Even if we do, I expect many projects have been delayed or cancelled, so this might end up being a sparse year in general.
Yeah I agree. Almost all industries in Japan are getting hit right (a big one being the anime industry). I think these people are being really inconsiderate about this.

Yes. There is. Nindies feature games made by relatively small, localized teams. General Directs hinge on in-house content and triple-A titles, or at least titles with decently large budgets created by a considerable amount of staff.
There's a difference between having some indy games ready to show compared to organizing a thousand people in multiple staffs to wrap up several multi-million dollar projects with quarantines and travel bans and whole business lockdowns in place all over the world.

Arlo, you forgot to mention one very important factor. Let me explain.
For you, it's just a Nintendo direct, and you only need it in English. Though that's not necessarily true for everyone.
Nintendo Directs are distributed worldwide, in I guess about 100 languages, all of them being transmitted at the same time. I personally live in the Netherlands, where there is a Dutch version. In Germany they distribute it in German, in France they transmit it in French, et cetera.
Let's say the Italian version of this Nintendo Direct is delayed, for whatever reason, that would lead to every single one of them being postponed. You cannot do this direct later in Italy, so you have to delay all of the others.
This is something no-one really talks about.
Real talk though, the Italian version of the direct could very well be causing issues because the situation over there is baaaaaad and has been for a long long while.

Nintendo hasn't had a Direct since Wednesday, March 30 1994.
The fact that there’s been no direct makes me think they don’t have anything big for this year other than animal crossing...
But that doesn't make sense. Not only is DLC for Pokemon coming out, but there's also another Metroid game, which is known for selling in the West, and a remake of Xenoblade Chronicles 1, and that's not even counting the cookie crumbs that have been in the Splatoon 2 art lately
@@druidt8949 all those are great, I'm especially excited for the Pokemon dlc, but the new Xbox is releasing, likely with a new Halo, and ps5 will likely have a lot too. It's gonna take something more than a remake of a 10 year old game and a moderately successful franchise at best to complete with that for most fans (though I personally am very excited for both)

I'm betting that the reason for the delay has been because of the outbreak. Japan has been hit pretty hard by it compared to everywhere but China and it has resulted in a lot of delays in other industries that come from Japan (Anime being a big one). I could imagine it having an impact on Nintendo's development teams for games and so Nintendo is likely at that point where they're unsure if or for how long games will be delayed for, so rather than making a Direct where over half their games are stated to be either delayed or a release date unknown, they're waiting for things to settle down and for consistency to resume before making any big announcements.
My boi here on Spain the prime minister has ordered everyone to stay at home and will fine people who do otherwise. Pretty unreal situation. So I think it hit harder here than in Japan hahaha

Same, my backlog is so massive its been years since I actually got to play the big new games during the year of their release. Even if BotW2 and Odyssey 2 both come this year, I probably won't have time to play them.
Exactly, and this proves how a lot of us are acting pretty greedy because of this. It being over 6 months since the last direct is irrelevant, because if we ALREADY have games we could be playing and having fun with...why aren't we?
Because it's easier to complain online about "nintendo direct when :(" than sort through your backlog of games most of us older gamers likely have at this point.
For example; I have Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War PS4, and countless older games I'm going to replay one day, because it's often more fun than buying yet another new game to add to the pile.
Consumerism. It's not even necessarily about playing the games. It's about having them in case we ever get the impulse to play them, or at the most base level, knowing we _can_ have them. We will buy them even if we won't play them, because we are paranoid of boredom and trained to distract ourselves with literally endless media, because god forbid the avalanches of *stuff* pauses even long enough for us to consider browsing the out of vogue *stuff* we've already purchased.
We're all conditioned to want more, sometimes even before we've received the last new thing we wanted. We preorder DLC as soon as its announced, then demand what's next before what we've bought is even released. It's amazing how we have this impulse without a second thought.
And the complaints we have now are even worse if you consider the fact that the virus will inevitably cause delays. Especially within Nintendo, because they (presumably) don't whip their employees to get shit out ASAP. But there's gonna be a big, dreadful crunch for lots of other developers in late 2020, and us customers will be moaning about how booored we were.
And if Nintendo *doesn't* crunch their employees, they'll be the ones we complain most about. Really, this virus thing fucks everyone.

End of April update: it’s very possible that we might not get a Direct until August. 11 months after the last one. I don’t think any drought will top this one.

Now people are saying we are getting a direct on the 28th... which would be on a Friday... Ok then. Although we did have an Indie Direct the other day and those are usually followed by Nintendo Directs so hopefully the drought is over! 😊

The last general Nintendo direct was on September 4, 2019. After that we had some DLC / Animal Crossing New Horizons mini directs. I used a day calculator and found that it's been exactly 193 days since the last main Nintendo Direct.
Over half a year has gone by without a Nintendo Direct...
I've kinda already resigned to the idea that no main direct until E3 time.
Everything that was going to be shown for spring just got delayed or Nintendo want to try something different or maybe Corona is causing them to roll back from dedicating time to the non-essential for the time being.

Yeah the problem I have is what you mentioned. The longer they wait, the more expectations I have and I am not wrong for doing that. Waiting this long with such a blank 2020 lineup? I'm expecting huge stuff next Direct.

This year Nintendo is probably gonna he dependent on third parties. We still have big ones like SMT V and Bayonetta 3 that haven’t released, and if they don’t then idk what’s happening with Nintendo
Ha SMT V and releasing that's a funny one. I mean Atlus did ask about games, people would like to see on the switch, but even if they announce SMT V it will probably be the japanese and not the western release.

I know that it's been announced. That was three years ago and we didn't get any infos since other than "Yeah we're working on it." Also it's probably going to have a separate Release in Japan and the West. If we take Persona 5 Royal as a measurement where there was pretty much a half year difference between the japanese and the western release, the japanese Release of SMTV would have to be in the next three months. Then we westeners would probably get it at the end of the year.
I would like to have SMT V this year, but with Persona 5 Royale coming out in a bit more than 2 weeks, i highly doubt it.
Since Atlus asked about people wanting Persona and SMT Ports on the switch i think the most likable scenario would be this:
We get a nintendo direct. One part of the Direct will be Atlus announcing that they will bring some SMT and Persona games on the Switch either the day of the direct or shortly after. And after this announcement there will be a japanese Releasedate for SMTV.

My guess is they feel that most people are going to be more preoccupied with the virus issue than the Direct so they plan to release it once this whole thing dies down.

Everyone is home basically, what would be a better time? This is the best time for announcing stuff and releasing stuff. Gamers are home and playing videogames for weeks.

@@jaxter1835 digital games also delivery services will work if you want physical. Your local game store might close, but they will take online orders.
@@simon7109100 that may be true but people are also not getting paid from their jobs because their not going to work and self isolating, some people can't afford games at the moment
@@jaxter1835 even the strictest quarantine allows people to go to work. If you absolutely can't, you get paid by your health insurance company at least 80% of your regular salary (at least in the EU). There are really not a lot of people who can't work and don't get compensation.
The longer we wait, the longer the Direct might be.
On the bright side, seeing as this year won't have many games, that could mean we'll finally get the Zelda HD ports seeing as they've been finished and on a shelf somewhere fro 3 years, being saved for a drought year.
What's caused this? Numerous things:
1) No games coming in the near future. The soonest we could POSSIBLY get a game after animal crossing is July, which in itself is too soon after E3 to properly showcase a game, as Nintendo likes a 4 month cycle at l;east to release info about a game. And of course, it's usually 6 months plus. So, realistically, the soonest we could get a game would be October, or December. In addition, most of their big games coming... Are BIG, and have diverted resources fro other projects. For example, Xenoblade HD has likely been pushed out of this year due to the employees being put on BOTW2 instead. What else do we have?
Detective Pikachu2 : TBA
Metroid Prime 4: TBA- 2022 soonest
BOTW 2: TBA 2021 probable
Bayonetta 3: TBA- Platinums been very busy, 2021 soonest
Xenoblade: 2020- Likely delayed
2) COVID19: While currently, only 1 nintendo employee has the virus, and it's in America where very little game development takes place, Japan is likely to be hit harder. And video game development is not something that you can easily just work from home towards, because you need in person direct communication and alterations constantly, and also proprietary software that employees can't be expected to own or buy. So once the call is given out to send employees home, Nintendo is literally on hold
3) COVID19 (Again): The game cards for Switch have also been hit by the manufacturing difficulties in Asia, which has not yet become a prevalent issue due to few games being released, and in the case of Animal crossing, stocks already being batched. But when the supplies do run out, it is HIGHLY unlikely that Nintendo would go Digital only, as most sales for Nintendo products are physical, and are gifts from parents and relatives. People wonder why so many companies do the boxes with codes in now, it's because parents still are unaware of how digital distribution works. Like movies, we're seeing so many movies being pushed back months, these are not just being released straight to digital. because it's less profitable, easier to pirate, and many can watch it and the studio loses out on the multiple tickets, so instead, they've been pushed back. While not a 1:1 situation, nintendo would likely do the same
4)Nintendo is reluctant to make any announcements in case they're delayed by COVID19: Nintendo has learned their lesson with BOTW and other games, that a tighter announcement- release schedule is more beneficial. But what they don't want to do, is announce a game, the have production halted because of COVID19, and then have to come out and say that the game is in fact 6 months- 1 year delayed
TLDR: E3 is the ONLY confirmed date for any news, they came out and said a Direct would happen in that time frame, so anything before then is super unlikely.... And COVID will of course delay things
Whilst I would love for Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword to come to the Switch, a year of ports would cause people to riot.
@@CelesticCF Well it's not a year of ports. Animal crossing pretty much prevents that, but these smaller ports will tide people over until the next feature year

Yeah, we’ve waited what, over 2 years now since the announcement? These people gotta learn some real patience
The game specific directs are the ones that drove me crazy(specifically the animal crossing one). When the pokemon direct happened, I didn't think much about it because pokemon usually does their own direct and reveals little in the actual direct. When the smash direct happened, I got worried but when I found out Byleth was coming out on Janurary 28th, I stopped worrying because I thought there would be a februrary direct that would announce the first fighter of the second fighter's pass. Then the animal crossing direct happened. When that happened, I realized it was because there wasn't going to be a direct before animal crossing came out. Now I'm thinking that an April direct and an E3 direct would be too close so there might just be an E3 direct and now I'm just going insane.
My theory: A game (or some games) they were going to show in the Direct,
together with a release date, got delayed because of the virus.

My guess is that the drought is caused by a combination of both your guesses. I'm thinking that they did have some stuff to announce, but the coronavirus is probably causing delays across the board. Now, they don't have much that's ready to announce. This will likely be a slow year, but that's to be expected, given the circumstances.

Imagine if New Horizons didn't get delayed and released in 2019 but we still had this direct drought. I guarantee you a lot more people would be going crazy with the lack of news/future of the Switch in 2020.
i find these times of the year where there is no game realeases its a good time to go back and play older games i haven't touched like kirby star alies or cadence of hyrule
try it yourself and maybe you can find out that games that you thought were short or bad were very good games

Nintendo is one of the three biggest game companies. If they can't produce 2 or 3 great games every year, they are doing something wrong.

A form of E3 is still happening, digitally. Not a lot really changes for Nintendo anyway. Arlo is just referring to it as E3.
Remember he said this was recorded after Wednesday, so I’m sure he was talking about the digital E3 event that everyone is doing.

@@beaverIAB Moist is a better term. Wet just means theyre releasing a new hit title every week , which our wallets wouldn't be able to handle.
Plus how can i enjoy a hit game if im bombarded with more hit games. I would be flooded and as im playing one ill feel anxious if ill ever get the time to play the newer ones because of how heavy content some of these games are. I dont like playing 10-20 titles at once throughout the week it makes me feel like im not actually enjoying the most out of one particular title.

Here's my take: E3 has been cancelled, and they're now scrambling to get everything or most things they were going to show then and shove then into the direct they planned for March.
I don't think they're scrambling for a March show. If anything, I'd bet preparations for a March Direct are hampered by people working from home, and uncertainty for how COVID-19 will affect the release timetables for upcoming games.
Why wouldn’t they still do a direct during June/July?
