It's not the trouble of putting a Direct together. It's the fact that the games themselves can't meet their deadlines because of the lockdowns worldwide, especially in Japan where they're being more firm than in most countries. My guess is that Nintendo doesn't want to show a Direct unless they can commit to at least a general timeframe.
It's better to candidly talk about where the games are at, what's going on with the company, maybe sprinkle in what new information they do have here and there to help maintain some of the fans' flagging excitement about the future, rather than just go complete radio silence until everything is ready to be wholly unveiled and set in stone. Directs were supposed to be about just that - Nintendo communicating Direct-ly with their fans and customers. But after Iwata's passing, it seems a huge amount of progress they had made on that front is being rolled back, and they're returning to being the mysterious secretive company that doesn't much like talking to outsiders.

We haven't been promised anything, yet we're speaking about a Nintendo Direct like it's a yearly tradition that would almost be offensive to cancel.
Everyone is having a tougher time right now, and if Nintendo needs to let their employees breathe, they should be able to do that.

They aren't cancelling a Direct because they can't do a Direct, they are cancelling because the games themselves are being pushed back. We aren't getting anything huge in the near future, or even the relative distant future.

@@paya5616 I agree, you're PROBABLY right, but right now no one, especially a Japanese video game company, has any real concrete idea what their next 12 months will look like. There's no reason to have a Direct when you have little to no certainty, and who knows what they even have to show off right now, for those people just looking for teasers? If Nintendo wants to put a clip or two out, they have social media. You save the Direct for when you have a legitimate idea on some release dates and have (hopefully) multiple major announcements you're ready to take public. This is not currently the case at Nintendo. I do try to share the same hope that Nintendo DOES have a few major games lined up, but the status of those games in their current form is unknown. Why have a Direct in June with a few little videos and extremely loose release windows when you can wait and have a killer Direct once they have their bearings again? And like I said, drop a few things on social media / TH-cam in the mean time.

Arlo seems to be forgetting a key thing: A lot of these game's productions themselves may also be affected by virus concerns, which can influence when they want to announce or talk about the games.
Exactly! Everyone is assuming that these games are anywhere near completion when we don’t have any evidence of that.
William Rice well they should be near completion. If it’s been worked on for 2yr-3yr it’s not a stretch to say they’re about finished. Also if they aren’t we’d still appreciate a notice like Metroid prime 4. Something is better than nothing.

Nintendo cannot guarantee that any title is GOING to hit their projected street dates, because nobody knows if or when non-essential work is going to go back to normal.
It’s not like Zelda is just complete and they’re waiting until the holidays to release it. It still needs work, it still needs testing and fixing. It still needs to hit specific production goals before it goes gold. The physical game discs need to be manufactured, at plants that are likely non-essential...
The problem isn’t that games in development aren’t far along, it’s that even though they can see the finish line, there’s no way for them to guarantee ANYTHING about when a single title will release, because everything is still question marks across the board.
wokeupinapanic I’d rather see confirmation of games with no guaranteed release date than to worry about what they have. Cause regardless we know that no games are coming soon either way. So might as well know what games would’ve been coming
@@wokeupinapanic You nailed it; Arlo and most people I see talking about this are just like "All Nintendo has to do is put a guy in front of a green screen and talk" but that way of thinking just seems rather childish to me. Game development goes wayyy deeper than that, I have a close friend who formerly worked at 505 and now works with Square Enix and I've learned a lot about some of the work process behind publishing a game from him. It's just not as simple as "Hey Nintendo, tell us what you're making because we wanna know right now"
I'm just scratching 2020 off, and waiting for 2021.

We got news that Smash development is going mostly smooth even while social distancing
Smash characters are a much smaller undertaking, but as somebody with ZERO industry knowledge, I have no idea how long that normally takes. Hopefully that and the animal crossing holiday updates will be fine, but who knows?
I hope Sakurai’s not overworking himself like he did with Smash Ultimate’s development... I hated hearing he was on an IV drip while working and I just want the guy to be healthy and happy.

My guess is that it’s more to do with how the stay at home orders are affecting the release dates of the titles being worked on more than just not being able to put a video together.
If they can’t guarantee that Death of the Wild is coming out holiday 2020, they’re not going to be like “and now, our big Zelda announcement; we might or might not have a release date, even we don’t know!”
They’re probably having to refocus the information they were planning on conveying. We don’t know that the global economy is going to bounce back anytime soon. We don’t know that big markets like North America or EU are going to come back to some sense of normalcy any time soon. We don’t know that the pandemic is going to slow down and life will be able to focus back onto the frivolous things that the modern world allows for us, like new video games.
They’re also probably trying to come up with a tone that comes off as respectful to the issues every country is facing, while not being completely somber and morose about it. But they can’t be all sunshine and rainbows about it either, because people are dying in a global pandemic, and they make electronic toys.
It sucks, but there’s a lot more affecting this than just “oh we have to work from home and that makes editing a video hard” - this is probably affecting release dates and launch windows and the company’s bottom line. And none of it is set in stone, either. So even if they move a release date, it might need to get moved again, and even that might be penciled in.
There’s so many question marks that it makes sense that they’d want to wait until some of the burning questions have more definite answers.

I highly doubt it’s about putting together a direct. I’m almost positive they don’t want to have announcements for games that are being delayed due to not being able to develop from home. Release dates are in the air, why have a direct if you can’t accurately give people a release window even?

I feel like all this dsicussion is missing the point on why they wont have a big direct.
Yes, organization is one thing but he main thing is that there are no games. All this mess has affected the development cycles of all studios and now no one is sure when they are launching or when they can have a trailer ready. And if they cant be sure that any of the games they were going to feature are even in development anymore why even bother making an event.

In all seriousness, while it does suck (especially if they were planning to announce the Mario rumours), if Nintendo is worried about staff safety, then this is the right move. Besides, there are games coming out soon that I'm excited for that will keep me ticking over to the next Direct, including Spongebob Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, Wonderful 101 Remastered and the biggest game of the year, 51 Clubhouse Games baby!

David Hinkle I wouldn’t doubt that, but once again, I’m waiting for either official confirmation from Nintendo or for June to pass by without one. Nintendo has already held a mini direct during this virus, who’s to say they can’t also show other stuff off in June, especially since they don’t do live stage shows and other companies like Microsoft and Ubisoft have already announced they’ll be having a digital presentation. Once again, not doubting that a direct in June may or may not happen, it’s just I refuse to put any belief in any “leak” that has no official confirmation from main sources since we have had that so many times and people still fall for false leaks

If there isn’t a direct this June, I could see them doing what they did for the Joker gameplay reveal in Smash, being a quick video (no longer than 15 minutes) that shows off different pieces of info, mostly stuff that you would expect to see in a direct

I think the reason for this is that a Direct usually includes lots of different games from lots of developers. There is no way in hell they can do something like that right now, and have everyone finish their trailer on a specific date.
Teams are having enough trouble as is.
I can however see the do one of those Directs that focus on a single game, like they did with Animal Crossing or Xenoblade 2.

Hi Arlo,
I'm currently living in Japan and work for a company that has mandated stay at home work. I can completely understand why Nintendo would not be able to release a direct as even just doing my work is incredibly difficult. As an example, My company still requires faxes for all required documents which most people don't have at home. That's just one instance of a hurdle to jump there are many more. Love your videos keep up the great work and stay healthy!

Ok let’s be honest. Nintendo doesn’t have anything to show. We should stop lying to ourselves. If there was something to show, there’s now way they wouldn’t have shown us by this point. There is no late 2020 title.

there was already an announcement of the new Arms smash fighter in June. If that isn't officially delayed by some statement I'll expect a direct at the same time.
They HAVE to put out something. We where given a July date for the ARMS DLC in smash ultimate. And that we would get a proper reveal before that.
