It's called drag coefficient and I'm a little shocked that no one saw this coming. It's a ball, covered completely in holes. It's trajectory will be affected.

    • @iyziejane

The airless also looks lighter weight. So if they had the same drag coefficient (pretend), the same drag force, a lighter weight ball is more affected by that force. I think they are trying to reduce both the drag and the weight, but haven't tuned it right.

I would imagine that this basketball is KIND of like the airless tire, like they always show the tire where you can see through it, but in reality when they actually release the tire i think they would be covering the sidewalls with rubber, meaning you can only see the inside of the airless tire for the demonstration purposes, so for the basketball I would imagine that this is kind of that same thing, release it to a few people who want to buy it so that people can actually see what it is, then release the actual one with some kind of leather skin or something so it doesn't have all the whole visible

This definitely makes sense as a collector's item. High price, low volume, selling to people who want to have a small piece of history so to speak. Wilson probably doesn't need to sell very many of these in the grand scheme to make enough money to recoup development costs so they can continue to comfortably develop gen 2 and so on. Future generations will likely get cheaper as the production process gets more refined and the product gets closer to being usable as a drop-in replacement for an air-filled basketball.

At first I thought momentum would be the reason why he kept shooting short due to less weight, but apparently the Airless is very close in weight to the regular. So yeah, while he said air resistance, I'd say he's close to the answer, it'd be turbulance that's causing a lot more drag on the ball flying through the air. All those holes will be creating some mad random turbulance patterns.

    • @hyperbaroque
      @hyperbaroque 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Eddy currents up against the inside surface in between the holes. Those eddy currents can lower the [ambient] [momentary] pressure inside the ball, causing the ball to suction the air it passes through. That's my guess.

Airflow is a factor when shooting with the ball, but it’s not as big as you’d think. It’s more so the actual weight of the ball compared to the regular basket ball. A regular basket ball has more weight to it which allows it to go farther with similar force as you would with the airless.
It’s the same reason why a paper plane with the front two corners folded then the wings doesn’t fly, but the moment you fold those corners one more time and make it heavier in the front, it flies.

The most jarring part without handling one is the sound. So very different. Of course the look and design are fascinating. Yet again without handling one it’s hard to imagine.
As many others in comments have stated, I would think all the holes would create drag. You expressed how you felt the need to push the shots harder from 3. Seems like a flaw in engineering. Yet I suppose it would very much change the game if it were adopted as regulation.
Thanks for putting so much effort into a review of something I’ll likely only see on video. As you said it’s unlikely to be used in a random game and I don’t have that kind of scratch. Cheers!

I mean, you don’t have to worry about inflation and deflation, nor do you have to worry about popping the ball, so it’s more durable, plus the 3D printed material should be more eco-friendly than whatever material they’re using for the actual ball (maybe). It’s more a matter of convenience. You store the ball away, you come back to it after 20 years, and it still works like new without requiring air

@@mrsoisauce9017 These are not durable. That was a big issue with the prototypes; they kept breaking. That’s a natural side effect of composite melted materials produced by 3d printing. 3D printing is also not eco-friendly lol. Microplastics aside, the filament manufacturing process isn’t great, then printing itself releases significant harmful emissions. Plastics also get brittle over time, so that ball ain’t bouncing the same 20 years later.

@@iRunfastXC This isn’t exactly a plastic tho. I have to assume it’s a material that’s similar to TPU; it’s more rubbery and bouncy. I believe it’s more durable than standard filament as well. Both those things would help its durability over time. Plus, as technology progresses, it’s going to become a lot better as a technology

What ever that material is, make a layer 1/20th the depth of those holes to cover it. That is what I want to see Wilson. Yes the bounce will be affected altering the structure, but surely ratio matters a lot. If you have a thin layer the resistance to morphing will be low enough to allow proper compression and uncompression.

I have an opinion that the future ball will be very popular with people who like to play throwing basketballs into the basketball hoops that are indoors (for example in the bedroom). Because if using a basketball in general the sound of the bounce will be heard up to the next door neighbor (if the residence is adjacent)

You should test this theory out by mentally adjusting to the airless ball, by only shooting and using the airless ball for a few days and then switch back to the normally wilson ball, with a hypothesis that your mental adjustment to the airless ball should lead to too much power when using the normal ball, as you try to mentally adjust back to the normal ball.

Eddy currents up against the inside surface in between the holes. Those eddy currents can lower the ambient momentary pressure inside the ball, causing the ball to suction the air it passes through. That's my guess.
tl;dr: the drag is on the immediate INSIDE of the ball.
edit: so the solution might be a bezel or a spiral on the inner terminus of each individual hole
edit: experimentally, i would place 3 equidistsnt fins pointing interior to each hole. my hope would be to direct all the air turbulence toward the center of the ball where it is as far away from the physical ball surface interior as possible. if the turbulence is directed simultaneously from all holes toward the center, the ball could possibly form a zone inside of it that behaves closer to the attenuation of an air mass inside an inflated ball when it is thrown (the air doesn't just sit still inside the basketball, it lumps and pools and jostles around in linear curves compared differentially linear to the path of the ball.)

Honestly, I could see how you would want it to emulate a typical basketball a bit more accurately with future iterations. But I still think this would be a great tool to train with as is. You are using all the same motion but with more required strength to accommodate for the drag. That should improve accuracy control when shooting a regular ball.

it's not that it's adding resistance, it's that the skin effect that's usually present with regular basketballs is gone as the air is going right through the ball so it's not got the carry a regular skinned ball does. Try putting a skin on it and see if that fixes it, if the weight is correct.

Definitely MUST close up the holes so that air cannot easy pass thru as it flies toward the net. clearly, the weight of the ball, with the increased air resistance would alter the mechanics of shooting , and i doubt many players will be open to that.
seems logical then to close up the holes, it will be still be airless, and the material needs to be semi-air permeable, so the air will pass around the ball as it flies, but it will not be a pressurized ball
