Very informative 👏. May I know that can I mix powdered 1tbs flax seed with 1 scoop of protein and 450ml of water? What is the difference between roasted and raw flax seed?
I was eating a breakfast cereal that had whole flax seed in it. I thought I was doing something healthy, but I realize I wasn’t getting the full benefits of flax by your video. Thanks for the info. I’m a big fan so please keep up the good work. We need somebody like you to separate fact from fiction concerning health.
Johanna Budwig created a protocol blending the flax oil with low fat cottage cheese. The sulfur compounds of the cottage cheese when bonded with the flax oil becomes water soluble and the cells of the body are able to use them much more efficiently.
Good day, Dr. Ekberg! To obtain EPA/DHA for omega 3's, I was given information by a professional that 2 tblsp of ground flaxseed is all I need to take to get the omega 3's I require. As you do, I also buy them whole & will ground them, but only a week's worth at a time to put 2 tblsp on my cooked steel cut oats for breakfast. I freeze the whole seeds. Thanks for the great information & Cheers!
Dr Ekberg, your explanation very interesting, In Eritrea its traditional food, we roasted lightly then grinding smoothly. We use it for drinking blended with hot water or cold
I do soak whole flex overnight in water in the fridge (only the portion I will eat) and ground them in my smoothie . I think that way you’ ll get the most of it.
Flax seed oil is the only thing that knocked out my prostatitis after many years of antibiotics. The flax seed would not work by it's self. The flax seed oil worked real fast, like two days and I never had to take antibiotics for the issue again.
We have been using flax for about 5 years now. We started with flax oil supplements and now we use milled flaxseed. I mix my ground flax with almond and or cashew milk and raisins. I use 1.5 to 2.0 tablespoons of flax meal, two ounces of plant based milk and 1+ ounces of raisins. Unopened bags of ground flaxseed go in the freezer while open bags go into the refrigerator. And though flaxseeds are highly sensitive you do not need to freeze your open bags. They last for a few months in the fridge and at least a year in the freezer. We've even left the bag out over night on the kitchen counter and never ran into any issue(s)... I suggest giving your bag a whiff/smell every now and then to see if it's started going rancid. I have never smelled rancid flaxseed/meal and we've gone through at least 50 one or two pound bags. The omega 3 to 6 ratio in flaxseeds is about 3.75 to 1. Threes to sixes. This is an awesome ratio although flax should be used to 'balance' your omegas somewhere in the 1-1 or maybe 2-1 ratio. Don't worry, you'll automatically be consuming more 6's in your daily diet, hence the balancing action of flaxseed. If you are a vegan, you need not worry about the conversion of ALA (
Thank you, Dr. Ekberg; this is the first video that I will be citing in a paper for a college write up project. I was trying to find a good breakdown of the difference between flaxseed oil capsules and ground flaxseed capsules and this gave me the information I was looking for.
One of the best teachers of our times with so much practical knowledge helpful informative videos easily understandable Thanks Dear Sten Ekberg warm regards
Whole flax seed keeps in room temperature for quite some time.. at least several weeks and maybe several months. If you are going to store it several months I would store it cold just in case. Freezing will extend it a lot (many fold) more than a refrigerator.
It all sounded so positive and then you said "but it is not the end-product we want" - that one is only found in fish oils. When I use it I have small mains electricity driven "grinder" and grind it "on the spot" with other seeds (inc sunflower, pumpkin) and consume it immediately its ground. I shall continue to do that. For "oily fish" I eat sardines.
Totally agree on only buying in organic seed, grind yourself and into the freezer. absolutely. I use flax meal every morning in my smoothie. We also use flax meal for our egg replacement for baking.. 1 TBS ground flax + 3 TBS water. Whisk and let sit about 5 minutes. You'll have an oooey gooey egg replacement. But its NOT for eating like eggs. Great info there Dr. Sten!
David Hahn we use it in all our baking. There is also a product called VeganEgg put out by Follow Your Heart. It’s great if you don’t mind processed egg replacement. It’s a great egg substitute for baking, dredge for breading and such. But it stinks!!!! Bad!!!! Lol You also would not eat it like an egg or anything. 🤢
Remember that flax goes rancid very quick after being ground, and goes rancid even faster when it is heated. I do not recommend any "breads" made from flax.
Thank you for this precious comparison. I had just bought a whole bottle of flaxseed oil for its omega 3 properties. I guess I will need to find other sources of omega 3... no animal source, as I am vegetarian. No time to grind the real seeds. Thanks again.
Thank you for correct scientific analysis on flax seed vs oil. While brands sell oil as concentrated oil for better benefit than seed. But you letting us know that oil is not in form of DHA which our body needs to digest... This essentially means it is much better to eat powder flaxseed freshly grounded than oil capsules. I'm using linseed oil every day as a salad dressing (buying extra virgin in a small dark glass bottle, keeping it in a refrigerator and using it all in a few weeks)

Dear Doctor - thank you for the program, again and again. Is it ok to eat a tablespoon of flax seed daily? I started a couple weeks ago. Mix with kefir and some berries. How long may one do that daily?
Years ago my doctor prescribed me fenofibrate to lower triglycerides, which were extremely high due to daily drinking. She would not allow the generic brand and I couldn't afford it. She also prescribed fish oil pills which I wouldn't take as I was vegan then, and some statin drug as well. I also refuse to take statins. So I got flaxseed oil pills and took them instead. Next visit, the tests showed great improvement. She was surprised at how good the prescriptions were working. I still drank through all this, and it was the flaxseed pills that lowered it tremendously. If you take lots of flax it makes your skin oily, otherwise no side effects. So I recommend it for anyone wanting to clean out their arteries.

The best way is, add the flaxseed oil to yogurt (6 heaped table spoons of yogurt to two - 3 table spoons of oil) Emulsify the yogurt and oil with a stick blender. That way your stomach will ingest 100% of the oil (that is the Budwig method). Then grind three tablespoons of seeds in a coffee grinder and add them to the emulsified oil and yogurt. I also add ground uncooked oats and dried fruit. This will also totally improve your bowel movements.

Hello Dr Ekberg , I d like to ask you what is the best way and how often to use flaxseed during the week in order to decrease blood pressure ? Thank you
In high school, I worked in a glass shop, and we used linseed oil to soften up window putty that had started to get hard in the can. Linseed oil is made from flax seeds, but probably isn't recommended for ingestion. Now that I'm much older, I consume flaxseed oil and ground flaxseed.
Johanna Budwig might of had different thoughts on this. Of course hers was very much geared to Cancer. However, her cottage cheese- Flax Oil (cold pressed) - ground seeds is pretty amazing. She emphasized eating right away.

I make flax flour with my Vita mix, frozen seeds, pulse grind, refreeze, repeat. About same as stone ground wheat flour. Always let it react to neutralize the phitic acid. Use it for many things as thickener, soluble fibre and oil being most important to me.
I got so sick of eggs and meat on Atkins and the thought of doing a low carb diet again almost makes my stomach turn. I'm hoping the I.F. will work for me (I've been on it for 3 days and am now at 3/21 without a problem). I know this isn't what you recommend but I'm wondering if I can still eat the carbs I've been consuming (whole grains, sweet potatoes, fruit, etc.) and do okay. I've been making green juices that are mostly greens, celery, and cucumbers and some fruit to make it drinkable. I run the pulp through 3 times to get out as much as possible and have put it into my homemade whole wheat and rye breads. I make fruit smoothies with frozen fruit, ground flax seed, nutritional yeast, coconut oil, etc., etc., but I not very often. (Once a week or less.) There is so much conflicting advice out there and I don't know what to do. I figure I.F. is good because it's the most conservative (except for lots of meat and eggs). I don't have any problem with eating eggs and meat but I'm just so tired of them.
I was most appreciative of the estrogen info: get nutrients from fresh seeds, eat moderately and not worry about effect of it causing cancer or not as it is not proven.

I make fruit smoothies with frozen fruit, ground flax seed, nutritional yeast, coconut oil, etc., etc., but I not very often. (Once a week or less.)
There is so much conflicting advice out there and I don't know what to do.
