    I really enjoyed this story. One thing I really liked about Flip Wilson was the fact he own the rights to The Flip Wilson show, he was worth an estimated $10 million when he died.

    • @reimourrpower9357
      @reimourrpower9357 3 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Yes indeed. That Flip Wilson owned the rights to his show is probably the most important fact about his career and young artists should take note.

      He sure was tight with his $$ and he never over spent and also used coupons at the grocery store in Malibu. Miles Davis asked him once why he went to the store and didnt have someone do it for him....Flip said you live your life and leave mine alone. Miles was like.....this nigga here.... I was a young man but I remember that so well it scared me but flip was never submissive to anyone. He said he used to live on 3 dollars a day when he was broke and poor just cause he made some money is not going to change that realization. He was not doing cocaine and it makes me very angry people keep this white bullshit alive when it was not true. It was a rival comedian who was jealous. He was arrested for a empty vial of hash oil....lol No cocaine was ever found. It was godfrey Cambridge the cops mistook flip for. Sonny Bono stood up for him cause sonny and flip were close and hated coke heads. I will always respect him.

    Add on #2: Richard Pryor is definitely the G.O.A.T. of Comedy. But any beef he had about Flip's content not being "Black" enough is hilarious hypocrisy. Pryor spent half his life married & chasing white women like it was going out of style. Point a finger at someone and 3 fingers and a thumb point back at you.

    Great work AshleySaysSo! Add on fact: *Flip Wilson also was one of the first Black artist / producers who had controlling ownership of his TV show* . Since "The Flip Wilson Show" was his, he made most of the $$$ and chose his content. So when it was cancelled his money was good even as he went through personal problems. He spent his last years playing golf and not needing to perform for money but for his creative desires.

    Ashley,
    This made my mom so happy, she shared her stories of him, Flip said he would never be homeless so his very first check he bought the house in Malibu he lived in till the end. My mother's boyfriend at the time asked her who was her favorite star and she said Flip and he took her to his house because he knew him. They hung out at the beach with him she said he was so nice and hospitable and they were chilling on the beach-it was late at night and he got a phone call about his son being in a motorcycle accident and was in the hospital in Palm springs and so he left to go to the hospital and my mom and her bf left and sadly the son ended up paralyzed. My momma loves her some Flip Wilson... :)

    I loved the Flip Wilson show. I met someone during my dating years and I told him how he is the only person I would be star crazy for. He said he would take me to meet him as he had worked with him on the show with preacher Leroy. I thought he was lying to me so he told me that Flip first pay check he bought his home in Malibu ..paid in full be cause he never wanted to be homeless again…well he drove me to his home ..it was late in the evening and I got to meet him. He invited us to return but he had to leave as his son was in a motorcycle accident in Palm Springs. Yes he had custody of all his children and his desire was to be a good parent and example. He is not forgotten… still loved by many.

    Well Ashley you did a great job! Mr. Wilson is one of my birthday twins and we enjoyed his show as a family when I was growing up. I'm glad you addressed the "dress issue " because I've tried to point out to people the same points that you made , well done it may not change minds but perhaps people should research for themselves instead of jumping on bandwagons.

      Some people, especially entertainers, can be very envious of another entertainer, and they will use their popularity, to try and bring down a fellow artist.its sort of like the crab in the bucket syndrome. Some of these same people that were complaining about Flip wearing the dresses, would laugh their asses off, at Milton Berle, doing the same damn thing...

    How could anyone forget the great Flip Wilson? He was hilarious, clean, cute, and with no malice in his comedy. That's why people from all walks of life loved him. Remember Queen Isabella saying, "Chris gonna find Ray Charles"? That was a classic. My family has a special fondness for Flip. He was a celebrity judge for a photo caption contest hosted by a local St. Louis TV show. My mom WON the grand prize of a 1965 Ford Mustang!

    Alright they NEEDED to hear that soap box at the end cause it was FACTS. The black community can be incredibly ignorant at times and it’s the sad truth. The community as a whole isn’t hurting from a man in a dress-dresses don’t even have a gender or sexuality if we being realistic. Man decided to say dresses are “meant for women” when in reality, it’s a piece of fabric. Who gives a damn who wears it 😂

    The dress argument to me is really weak. Cause in the end it’s a matter of what the individual is willing to do. When Milton Berle put on the dress it certainly didn’t hurt his career. I think it’s jealousy all the way around when a black man darns the dress for laughs and the project becomes a hit. Case in point Jamie Fox and Martin Lawrence..very successful.

    I agree with you, Ashley! Flip Wilson was a very talented comedian in his own right and wasn't the only black man to wear a dress and didn't start it. Like the black principal of my mother's high school (back in the 1930s) used to say, "Colored people are like a bucket of crawdads. When one climbs and just about reaches the top, the others reach up and pull him back down."" Just makes me sick!!

Saw him in an episode of 227 too. He really was THE man! Maybe he had too much light ❤️ for his time which could explain all the hate that came his way.
