That is not entirely true. There definitely exists a mental health stigma related to acknowledgment and treatment in the Black community, however much work is being done to publicize and solve the issue.
The term schizophrenia derives from the racist ideologies of Europe. Eugene Bleuler, the Swiss man who coined the term, was a quack and a bigot. He advocated the murder of the patients he labeled schizophrenic. They were soon some of the first to die in the holocaust. The drugs they used then and now to "treat" it replaced the lobotomy because they also destroy the brain and body, but under the pretense of being therapeutic and not merely a tool of genocide. Donny Hathaway was not crazy. Racism was the problem. His hostility towards women may have been due to the patriarchal teachings of Christianity, which say women are not equal to men. People in his position are gaslit and abused and then blamed for crying for help for their wounds which I find particularly cruel. Just saying because I've been there. The grief of being widowed that caused Alice Coltrane her visions brought her to an older spiritual and medicinal practice in India which thankfully viewed her suffering with more compassion and allowed her to continue her artistic genius. I feel there is a great loss to the artistic and general community when the medieval torture practices of Europe are forced on ADOS or anyone really when ancient practices such as meditation and acknowledgement and acceptance of the grief process are much more humane and sane responses to normal reactions to the REAL harms of unjust persecution and loss.
Well now I must say that Donny's style was magical and definitely rose to the same quality as Stevie Wonders, Stevie was first and would put thst Muddy-Waters gut rock to his beats and his grim would make you dance yo self out. But they both kicked that piano around "For The War On Poverty"
Stevie Wonder joined Motown at the tender age of 11, in 1961. By the time Donny Hathaway left Howard University and joined the great Curtis Mayfield in the late 60's, Stevie had a few years on him professionally. I enjoined the old Motor Town Reviews that Motown Staged annually, featuring the entire Motown roster. Lil Stevie Wonder was a force to be reckoned with! They are both musical geniuses/prodigies.
I know, right? That's just one of the many reasons I love Miss Ashley. She's such a natural storyteller. She has this gift to where you can literally picture what she's talking about. My dad was a musician and my mother used to host cocktail parties for folks in the industry. She used to tell this story of the time Donny came by to see my dad, then proceeded to, "light up a joint in my house! I promptly asked him to take that mess outside." Lol! R.I.P. great one.
Marijuana, as well as cocaine and other illicit drugs were prevalent then and years past, used by the artistic communities. Such stress and drug use were common amongst the black artists because of the pressures of the record companies they were signed to. Many casualties resulted because of this. RIP Donny Hathaway, your musical gift will always play in my heart!!!
Donny Hathaway had a beautiful voice Mental illness is so real It runs on my dads side. I struggle with severe anxiety and depression. Imagine being in a toxic workplace environment that just triggers everything, people just don’t get it. It’s so debilitating

One thing I love about your channel is the privilege of being introduced to a lot of these artists whom I’ve heard of, but never really listened to. Is it just me, or was Donny’s sound and voice ahead of it’s time? His music sounds very current.
I can dig that, but the roots of that insecurity are way deeper than most people would understand. She did the best she could with what life dealt her.
Darlin, you knew that we needed that real music tea . It's been said that true artist are touched with greatness but can be stained with madness. Have you ever wondered why some creative people have drugs issues or addiction issues? It's thought many people of that nature have chemical imbalance that requires a delicate precise balance but many times these people overshoot it or under do it. Many greats were treated with shame, drugs, or persecution. My family and I are so proud of your sponsorship. May your talents be continued be but on top and shine.
Thank you luv! You are so right about creative ppl having addiction problems is almost like a strange trade off for their talent or something. It's so crazy.
Agree. But I would also add Roberta to the list. She is underrated because most have never truly listened to her complete catalogue and don’t know she has written, arranged, and produced as well as sung and played. And then that’s just the surface. Let’s not forget the jazz and rock artists on Atlantic. That company had gems on their entire roster.

The Late, Great, Honorable Donny Edward Hathaway was my idol BEFORE I even knew, who he was. Before I even seen his face. It's his voice. And his soul that's navigating it. IfI could only channel that man's energy, wherever he is, within this boundless universe, and tell him, "Thank you, brother." Thank you for making such Unearthly, Heavenly, Godly music that I was too young to truly overstand and appreciate. But now that I've heard it, I not only LOVE it, I PRAISE IT!!!! That's right, chatroom. Y'all HEARD WHAT I SAID.
You never disappoint us!! Awesome job!! Poor Donnie. There was a lady I knew years ago w the same diagnosis. She would do great for a while, then stop taking her medication because she thought she could live without it. She would go missing or be out of control for a while. It was like an annual thing and her daughter was always so scared to leave and go to college bc she was all she had. I felt so bad for the both of them.
If I am not mistaken Jesse Martin that used to be an actor on one of the Law & Order tv series did make a movie on either him or Marvin Gaye. I read about that online in 2007/2008 but for some odd reason industry execs canned it & it sits on a shelf still awaiting a future release. The movie was 1 of about 30 good movies never released for some odd reason from that timeframe. I would love to see it regardless of whether it's on Marvin or Donny.
FYI if you are in a sad space don’t listen to his music! No jk Donny Hathaway has an ability to reduce you to a blubbering mess. “A Song For You” is the most beautiful song that has ever been recorded. We were all cheated out of what could have been. RIP Mr. Hathaway
Jesse Jackson is allowed to have thoughts about the cause of Donny’s death whether Roberta had moved on to him or not. I don’t understand what people thought Jesse was supposed to say when he and Roberta dated if Donny wasn’t dead yet. One has nothing to do with the other.
I cry everytime I hear one of his songs. I have to get prepared for this! Thanks Ashley Mama!! Donny deserves all the recognition, and I will never understand how he "jumped" from a high rise hotel and still had his hat on when he was found dead on the ground. Let me breathe through this. Hey yall!!!!
I’ve been working in the social work area for about 18 years. It’s not uncommon for my clients to meet their mates in the psych ward. When I initially saw his story on unsung, I thought the same thing because the child from that relationship was interviewed and was rocking back and forth. Also, because I know a few Schizophrenics, the medical community warns that suicide is common. It’s a difficult disease to suffer from. Anderson Cooper did a story on it when he wore an ear piece that simulated what Schizophrenics report happens with the voices. It was enlightening. Great video and I love this channel!

His story is a lot like Thelonius Monk. He was Schizophrenic, but the musicians didn’t know nothing about that, so they gave him dope and made him worse. He eventually died from drugs. But they say he was a genius.
Not surprising. People dealing with depression are masters at concealing it. Probably moreso during that time given the view on depression in the black community.
I'm with you , I mean where was the safety bars, fire escape stuff, window screens or something ? Who leave a person with a known mental illness alone without any safety? That's like leaving a recovering wino at open bar wedding . SMH

Sadly no. He wasn’t labeled he was diagnosed with multiple mental illnesses. If anything people don’t know how to respond to the warning signs making it more difficult for the person suffering from the mental illness.
Yeah just like Dave Chappelle said! Remember he said he was "labeled" as crazy when he questioned his $$$. They also "labeled" Lisa Lopez as crazy when she questioned her $$$. They even tried to "label" Prince as crazy when he tried to get his masters back, even took away his ability to use his own name "Prince" when performing. Just sayin.

He wasn't on any medication so his hard drug use made the schizophrenia MUCH worse. I had to leave the relationship because I couldn't handle it. I hope he is getting some kind of help now.
“Chilllllleeee, Baaaaaaaaabbbbbby!!!!!!”
Its sad that our black community doesn't speak too much on mental health issues, I'm sorry to know that Donny struggled with so many inner demons😇😇😇😇
That is not entirely true. There definitely exists a mental health stigma related to acknowledgment and treatment in the Black community, however much work is being done to publicize and solve the issue.
@@sereneamani1713 that's just my personal take...that's all..

The Way She Did His Voice As A Child Talking Bout “I Wanna Sing Wit My Grandma In The Choir😩”🤣🌺 Rip Donny I See Stevie Took Yo Style Lol
Well now I must say that Donny's style was magical and definitely rose to the same quality as Stevie Wonders, Stevie was first and would put thst Muddy-Waters gut rock to his beats and his grim would make you dance yo self out. But they both kicked that piano around "For The War On Poverty"
Stevie admitted in an interview that both kind of borrowed from and inspired each other.
She's like your BFF from high school who always had the Tea. She draws you in and then you give her your undivided attention and be like "Spill it, girl... SPILL IT!!!!!!"😯🤭🤭😁🥰
Yeah Ashley is hilarious 😂
I got a chance to see lalah Hathaway in concert along with will downing. Col Ohio.. they put on a great show!!! Lalah sounds just like her dad. rip..✅🎤👏
Was at home just thinking like I wonder when Ashley gonna hit us with another video 😭 always right on timeeee thank youuuu 💖💖

Yes ma'am this Christmas the anthem still today 2021 that part!!!
My dad was a musician and my mother used to host cocktail parties for folks in the industry. She used to tell this story of the time Donny came by to see my dad, then proceeded to, "light up a joint in my house! I promptly asked him to take that mess outside." Lol! R.I.P. great one.
LOL this is awesome
My dad was a musician too. No stories about Donny tho!
When you started talking about how they got their info about the lady he had another child with, I hollered 😭
Girl I was like these folks messy
@@AshleySaysSo20 they are but you had me hollering lol 😂 because I thought the same thing when you put up her picture.
I think they said on Unsung that they met in the mental hospital.
I work with Donita she was very sweet dreams from 1996 until Nov 1997 . She live some Boyz to men.

Donny Hathaway had a beautiful voice
Mental illness is so real
It runs on my dads side. I struggle with severe anxiety and depression. Imagine being in a toxic workplace environment that just triggers everything, people just don’t get it. It’s so debilitating
My grandma love Donny Hathaway even Christmas Play This Christmas loud and be sing Right alone ...😍😍RIP Mr Hathaway🙏🙏😥
I’m addicted to Ashley now 🤦🏽♀️ I tried to watch another young lady and bless her heart I couldn’t do it, I had to come back to Ashley because she has the voice and the personality to tell these stories with spice and flare!!!
😂😂❤
One thing I love about your channel is the privilege of being introduced to a lot of these artists whom I’ve heard of, but never really listened to. Is it just me, or was Donny’s sound and voice ahead of it’s time? His music sounds very current.
So tired of Auntie ReRe upset 😡 when the spotlight wasn't on her. Lol
I can dig that, but the roots of that insecurity are way deeper than most people would understand. She did the best she could with what life dealt her.
REST WELL DONNY YES SIR!!!!
I have known about Donny Hathaway all my life and never heard his story so well explained. Thank you for what you do.
You're so welcome and thank you!
The 3 Atlantic Records geniuses were actually Ray Charles, Aretha, and Donny.
💕💕💕
@monilaninetynine3811 ...Apparently, you don't anything about Atlantic Records.
Best Christmas song ever! So sorry to hear about his death. He's from my hometown.

Remember he was diagnosed with Paranoid Schizophrenia and obviously heard voices while suffering a psychotic breakdown....RIP to one of the greatest vocalist....
I've seen plenty of videos on Donny & this by far is one of my favorite outlooks on it. He was so talented & it just all ended tragically.
Thank you Kovi!🥰

Right?! 😆 I was mad that it had already been up for 25mins before I had seen it! lol
Donny was exceptional in so many ways. His voice just melts me. God bless him ❤
I got to see Layla Hathaway and Ruben Studdard at a jazz club out in the state of Washington and she tore the house down!!!!
Whaaaa? I would have loved to see that!!!
I saw Lalah in 2016 at the Musicbox in San Diego. She was amazing!!!
I have seen her and would love to see her with Rachelle Ferrell.

Empress, I was at that show. And it was fire !!! Great show.
The sassy lady walking on the screen was hilarious 😂. God bless Donny❤️
The biggest problem with mental health is that it is chalked up to a simply a medical issue and not a spiritual one as well
His father's name was Hosea Brown, a serviceman. His parents split shortly before Donny's birth.
This was very sad. He didn't even get into his full music career 😢
Donny hathaway the 1n 0nly the best singer ever just very talented he was the G.0.A.T.
Saddened to hear about his ailments. But he had a beautiful soulful voice.
My fave by him is " Song for You " A troubled Soul. Sad
Mine as well 😩That song hits me every time
Yeah if I have a funeral instead of being cremated I want that to be played at my funeral
One of the more underrated musical geniuses of all time. He was one of my favorites.
Congratulations on you getting sponsors
Thank you Kimberly🥰
I’m surprised no one did a biopic movie on him
I’m surprised about that as well. There should be a biopic. If Anthony Hamilton can act, I think he could play him perfectly....
There was a play though, that I wish I could've seen
Right
If I am not mistaken Jesse Martin that used to be an actor on one of the Law & Order tv series did make a movie on either him or Marvin Gaye. I read about that online in 2007/2008 but for some odd reason industry execs canned it & it sits on a shelf still awaiting a future release. The movie was 1 of about 30 good movies never released for some odd reason from that timeframe. I would love to see it regardless of whether it's on Marvin or Donny.
The estate may not want it.
Lol the part when he tells the strange lady “ Go home and take care of dem kids!” I diiiied lol

One of the saddest stories that you have told. Near tears driving to work and listening
Oh my damn what🤔🤔
Donny's story makes me think of the movie Get Out.
he didn't do it himself. I never believed that. 33 y.o jumped from the 33rd floor with a #1 hit record. Labels make more when artist are dead.

Donny was one of the greatest singers of all time. RIP.
I had an in-service where they out a helmet on simulating the voices. It touched me greatly.
'Um sir, you doin' too much! You got me leaving cause I'm embarrassed, so you need to be paying for this food!' 😂😂😂
I just love the way she just puts her own twists on the story. 😂

This Christmas is my favorite Christmas song only cause of Donny's voice.
Whenever I hear of Donny's story, I just want to cry. He and Roberta are my mother's favorite singers. 'Be Black for Me' does get me emotional as well.
Mental Illness is important. Please don’t be afraid to get help. Sometimes we like to fix it ourselves and it doesn’t last. I am so happy people are waking up to it topic. ❤️🙏🏽💪🏽
I will always love and respect Donny, that is one voice that gives me chills everytime. He may have been mentally struggling but the industry is something else, now people are finding out remote viewing is real…
Yes! He wasn't lying. Folks were messing with him.
Say so, brother! Peple have NO IDEA! Once those spirits are sent out to "get" someone it's basically wrap UNLESS the person can get delivered & strong spiritual warfare engaged and WON!
The Ghetto is timeless also. There was a one man show at The Apollo on Donny Hathaway. It was wonderful. It revealed Hathaway’s genius and mental illness. The two often correlate.

Not surprising. People dealing with depression are masters at concealing it. Probably moreso during that time given the view on depression in the black community.

Yes, that story was always sketchy.....
I'm with you , I mean where was the safety bars, fire escape stuff, window screens or something ? Who leave a person with a known mental illness alone without any safety? That's like leaving a recovering wino at open bar wedding . SMH
There were rumors that Roberta was with him on the night that he died.It makes sense because she never did any interview concening him.She was not on unsung.I find that strange.
New subscriber here. In my personal opinion, I believe there was some truth to what he was saying, you never know what these people are going through and what pressures they’re under while in the entertainment business. Those are the people that everyone calls “crazy” when in reality, there’s something suspicious going on like they claim..
The crazy part is Donny was probably right and not out of his mind at all. It's easy to label someone when you don't understand/believe them.
Sadly no. He wasn’t labeled he was diagnosed with multiple mental illnesses. If anything people don’t know how to respond to the warning signs making it more difficult for the person suffering from the mental illness.
Nah too many witnesses say he wasn't in his right mind.
Just sayin.
@@savoyaepps646 Except he was officially diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic. None of the others were. His own wife said that. Not everything Chappelle said is gospel.
