I agree. I have been using it for the last year or so. Somehow, knowing, which way the wind is blowing relative to the direction you are riding helps you mentally
People used to tell me that electronic shifting was completely unnecessary, waste of money. I agreed until I tried now, now it's always on all of my bikes. People used to tell me I don't need radar on my bike. I tried it, now I don't leave home without it. Then people told me I didn't need to see what gear I'm on my computer display. I through the same until I tried it, now it's always on my main page. I'm pretty sure I could live without a wind direction display, and based on my personal history, I'd probably put it, and leave it on my main page... except for one thing. I'm a Wahoo user and don't plan on changing :)
I am just a regular commuter who owns a Garmin and Garmin Radar. I have also been using this app from its beginning. Using my Garmin, Garmin Radar and this app just makes my ride that much more enjoyable. I don’t want to have to think when riding these three assistants help me with this
I've been using WIndfield for several years now. I've found its accuracy to be somewhat spotty here in Poland, but even so it is generally accurate as to the overall wind direction and speed - at least where I live. I cannot explain it, but I have become so used to it that I simply cannot imagine my riding without it. Much like you I tend to check the weather and plot my ride accordingly, but winds sometimes shift and behave unexpectedly and this little field has kept me abreast of any such changes, which is useful if you get caught out some ways from home. I do recommend it, especially if doing long rides over many hours is your thing.
Love that app. It keeps you honest. At times while riding I feel strong or weak, but after looking at the wind direction on my Garmin it brings me back to reality.
I didnt like the tiered pricing scheme. Nor being forced into a supscription for freely available weather data if i want more than hourly updates. I chose AKwind. It gives me wind info for free, with 5 minute updates. I might have chose windfield if it didnt go full subscription model. Wind direction is not worth a single penny to me as it already exists in my phone. Im not paying for a subscription to free crap just to get an arrow on the screen of my choosing. AKwind does have its own hoops to jump through to get it going. You will need to create a free account to get a keycode to weather data. But it felt equally as convoluted as becoming a subscriber through windfields system...
I’ve been using WF for over two years and have always loved it. I use a full width view on my 1030 so I can see all my secondary data values such as humidity, UV, index, feels like temperature, last weather update, and wind gusts. Several in our club have the Pro version. We still have to tell some paceline leaders to move left or right so we can get the best draft. So, not all experienced riders are aware of wind direction. I have my WF data linked to Strava so I get a summary of the weather conditions for completed rides. It’s well worth $12 a year for the Pro version.
I remember when Paul Hogan used advertise "Anyhow have a Winfield" and now a gasper of a different sort. It's a nifty data field to know about. Thanks for flagging it
If you commute the same routes regularly and you know where all the segments are, it's great for those moments where there's a huge arrow pointing the same direction you're riding (arrow changes size with wind speed), to put the boot in that little harder for a top 10 or q/kom. In summer having UV index and temperature (from the internal thermometer) is great here in Perth to remind me to get out of the sun, as it's often difficult to gauge if the rays are getting a little bitey when sweaty and an early sea breeze kicks in.
I seriously needed this. Helps a bit when riding deep wheels. Most times I don’t really check the wind when I ride so it would be nice to know it once in the bike 😂
I'm a big fan of WindField (pun only kinda intentional). I frequently ride long gravel events, on courses I many not know well, and these events are long days. So the data field helps me a ton to know if I'm about to hit a headwind at the next turn, for example. Also wind conditions change throughout the day and may not match the forecast, so real time updates are great. OTOH there are a good number of gravel event is areas without cell coverage, and then it's not as helpful. It's also great if your out hunting Strava segments to know that you can use a little wind-doping to score that KOM 😁
Thanks, just installed and it is really useful to see if you are getting any assistance from the wind, a bit sobering on occasions when you think you are really going well😅
I've been using this for about 6 months, I was not sure if it was worth it, but found that it comes in really handy if you decided to extend your ride or wondering if the wind has shifted or you are just sucking today. LOL
I have been using this field on my Edge 1040 for one year now and currently am a PRO subscriber. For the most part, the field is a nice-to-have, but the accuracy of the field depends on where and how old the source data is in relation to your route/time of ride. I have experienced occasional moderate discrepancies between its information and the actual speed/direction (wind directions off by 90-180 degrees from reported).
Thank you for the excellent and informative video. I have been using the free WindField version, wasn't extremely impressed but it was ok. I had no idea about the other levels, I just upgraded to the pro version. Having 5 minutes updates is very useful, the 60 minute udates on the free version not so much. Hello sir, although not related to this one but my edge 840 is not showing nearby climbs nor it pulls up the the climb pro screen automatically when riding through climbs, I have adjusted all the settings, did everything but it is not working, I am from India.
One for Garmin Support.
@gplama sir can you give me some direct contact, as they don't seem to reply me on the regular support page
I think you're putting far too much faith in the accuracy of the information. Wind is dynamic, and what you experience on the bike will not be the same as that reported by the nearest weather station a few minutes ago.
Needs to be connected to a phone though? Can’t be used in a race?
correct, your phone handles the data connection
is there any way to see how many local weather stations there are in my location?
I’ve never made it public but I have thought about it. I’m working on a new my account page so it’s possible I could add it there in the future
@@windfieldapp Thx - I think its useful to know how far away you because in some places eg Singapore the wind is very localised. Ive subscribed and will test it over the coming weeks.
How is the battery drain? Cell phone getting data
The 840/1040 Solar units are crazy good for battery life as-is, so no change noted (likely small enough to be offset by the sun). Older Edge units might be a different story.
@@gplama it's more the cell phone that's getting the data in worried about. Especially if in an area with bad cell reception if the app retries making the cell phone try to get a data connection lots of times until success which can use a good amount of battery of the phone
@@enki42ea great question. i've done multiple tests on various garmin devices have never seen any battery impact from my apps (running several at once). as for the phone, also negligible both with an iphone x and iphone 14. it only tries once every 5 mins regardless if you have service or not (no way to tell from the app side) so it's probably a lot less intensive than apps like facebook or twitter are already doing in the background.
I want to say so much about this, yet I’m lost for words…
Does Wahoo offer anything like this?
No
How do you change Celsius to Fahrenheit? Thanks
It likely takes the setting from the Edge system. Menu > Settings > System > Units (or similar).
Dumb question department: arrow pointing at you means headwind? Once i know that then it all makes sense 😂.
Thanks for another nugget Shane.
Correct. 👌🏼
Correct. Arrow toward you, headwind. Arrow pointing forward in your direction = tailwind
Tends not to work until about 30 minutes into a ride at least then it suddenly starts giving wind data.
Which model Garmin are you using and what phone is it paired to for the weather data?
@@gplama Garmin 1000 and an iPhone 11
@@isabelshrine4628 Best contact the developer on this one. The 1000 is getting on in years now.
So people now need an app to tell them which way the wind is blowing when they are out riding? We must be at peak stupid.
Im not paying for this crap, and better free options exist. 1/5-1/2 of a premium music subscription for an arrow with 5 minute updates on direction...
I can pay nothing and get 5 minute updates with AK wind. For the same price i get an update 1x an hour from windfield...
I also dont like my card information being held by companies that cant afford a proper it department to defend my card information.
When I go to get the code in Settings is in blanck. There is not code. It is Garmin edge 1040
