Definitely one of your more helpful videos. I hated having to navigate through hydration and calories screens after every ride, only then to have Garmin tell me I needed 67 hours of recovery after a 2 hour endurance paced ride. All gone and thank you.

If I could disable virtual partner I definitely would. The virtual partner made me make wrong turns regularly, because navigation is a main purpose for me. I know someone who doesn't use his Edge because of the confusion the virtual partner brings. During my last trip in France I didn't change any notifications on my brand new Edge 1040. When descending the col de Portet d'Aspet I missed the turn towards the col de Menté. The route warning was drowned in the sharp turn warnings, and the Edge automatically rerouted my route. My old Edge 1030 makes me turn around on every part of the road. The Edge 1040 made me complete the entire descent, and then let me turn around at the first intersection, which was 5 kilometer away, and 200 meter lower, which I all had to ride back on a ride that was already strenuous. The Edge 1040 probably assumes I am driving a truck with a trailer instead of a bicycle. I still don't know how to fix that weird rerouting, I turned off automatic rerouting though.
I'd already set all these on my new 1040 Solar and then a Garmin update borked it and I had to do a factory reset so it's handy having this list of stupid hidden Garmin options to reference. Cheers!

Fantastic video, I always think to myself when riding.... jeez, I need to shut that off when it pops up... but never do it once I get off the bike. Just took care of the various one, especially the training stuff.
8:22 I feel validated. I have been a sunrise/sunset data-field weirdo for years. It really is one of the most useful pieces of information to have on your Edge.
You can kind-of disable the virtual partner by setting its speed to 1 km/h in Garmin Connect. But this is a per course setting so have to set it for all your courses.
I actually started to like the 5 mile auto lap on the stock units after I warrantied mine. Also the recovery is fun to see after a hard group ride to show “3 days”. My signal for a beer.
My edge 530 can't do climb pro 'live' unless it's a pre loaded course BUT can do live sharp bends.....Garmin show us older unit owners who are loyal to your brand but cant afford to upgrade as often as some a little love, its a software upgrade not hardware.
@@grogangreen- I think it’s a data storage limitation with the X30 units; the maps required to power the ClimbPro “live” feature are massive (several gb) data files.
yes! It would also be great to get rid of much of the stuff in the menus that we never use. I've used Edges for almost 10 years and still can't always easily find what I'm looking for. I do like the recovery time but, as you say, some of us will want these features, others not.
Finger on the pulse as usual Shane - I’ve just moved back to Garmin 1040 from a Karoo 2 and have been dismayed how little progress Garmin have made since I left - good battery and screen though… The beeps and pop ups have been driving me round the bend…
Funny that different people like different stuff. I have the auto lap set to 2km, which reminds me to take a sip of water. Also like to check my progress, that I can maintain a 4min, 2km split. Keeps me motivated.
@@deDANIEL11609 Because as I mentioned, as well as the drink reminder, checking the time for every 2km split keeps me aware of progress, effort, etc. Yes, I also have power & HR to do that. I live for stats, so things like 2km splits is just another stat that keeps me motivated. Like I mentioned in my original reply, different riders get different things out of their devices. This is why a highly customisable devices like the Edge is great so that all riders, regardless of what they find important, can get what they want from the device. Very helpful. Noticed that you do not have a "Last Ride" glance on your home screen. It consumes a good 1/3 of the real estate and I cannot find where you can disable this or move its position. Any insights, how did you remove it?
Warning notifications are great if they occur BEFORE the condition occurs. Same with climbing notifications...I've been getting climb pro notificaions well into most ascents even on routes i ride regularly. Still waiting on Garmin's reply on notification tones, which are intermittent and very faint. Even indoor training workout transitions are difficult to hear when compared to my Wahoo Elemnt Roam 2. Thanks for the great tips! Video suggestion about one thing that’s been bothering me: whenever I go off route, even just a little, these persistent buttons pop up, taking over like half the screen - pause route and reroute. They don’t go away until I press one or the other. It’s not a huge deal on the road, but on the trail, it’s definitely more than a nag. I’m using the 840
Just made most of your suggested changes to my 1040. I am interested in getting rid of virtual partner as well. Setting up gears on Garmin from SRAM Rival AXS would be of interest.
Thank you heaps. Up until this vid I thought the “Lap Banner” couldn’t be switched off. I’ve found that “nanny nag” really annoying as it pops up at really inconvenient times taking up a fair chunk of the screen and for some time too.
Garmin has gone nuts on features and made the system so complex they can't manage it. The MyBikeRadarTreffic special data field has defaulted to a small thin font due some obscure screwup in the new firmware, and Garmin has been fumbling with it for weeks. So I can't read the numbers when headed into the morning sun (the other numbers in the data screen are easily legible in this situation because they are bigger and thicker). Actual speed of traffic approaching from behind is far far more important to me than all the weird features in this video.
@Shane Miller since a few firmware versions v24 (E1040S) despite the switch on the unit and the same on the mobile GC - there is no ‘Training Effect’ notification after the activity. A post on the garmin forum went unanswered :D Another error on the other hand is related to the mobile ‘GarminConnect’ starting from v5.4 and ending with v5.5. The error is that there is no notification of any completed activity, neither from the watch nor from the Edg. This is a ‘GC’ related issue as snapshot notifications work fine. I did a roolback of the ‘GC’ app to version 5.3 and ...all notifications (activities, snapshots) work correctly. Ehhh, all garmin ;)
Did you find a way to disable Daily suggested Workout on the Edge 1050 ? I can’t disable like you (and I) did disable that on the edge 1040. and yes a user should have the possibility to disable virtual partner . But for that user ask since the edge 800 . Think that’s must be a boss wanted feature.
Riding downhill at 70 km/h and Garmin warning me of a sharp turn to be overlayed by a reminder to eat that banana 🍌 is peak Edge. Garmin really needs to put some smartness on when to show these screens and overlays. The new Hazard warnings overlay the compass 🧭 marker and I couldn't get rid of it while riding, had to fully stop and use iPhone maps for navigation.
Haha yeah those layers of notifications are hilarious. Just the other day I had a three deep stack (firmware update, sensor firmware update, power meter calibration) all the while I was trying to get a route to sync 🤯 If wahoo ever releases something with proper non-laggy navigation I’ll order first day and be glad to see the back of the Edge.
If those notifications would be customizable... or at least take max 20% of screen. Happens to me every time I need to look at the map or check power during interval
Thanks for reminding me / informing me I could remove Performance Condition alerts and adjust the "Glances" on the homescreen to remove the useless suggested workout and garmin coaching. Is there a good way to remove the new road hazard popovers?
Remove those under alerts and prompts - but it’ll remove all of them from alerting. It’d be better to have more granular control of which hazards are alerted.
Why Garmin, why? Why do we have a feature for 5 year olds that we can't disable? If you are serious about training you will never use Virtual Partner. If you just want to ride, it's the most annoying thing in the world, because you are just out there enjoying stuff and not worrying about how fast your Gramin thinks you need to go. And I know I can set it to 100k/h or 1 km/h and not see it. But still, this feature can take a hike (please don't make a virtual partner for hiking on my Garmin watch).
Great video. Any idea about how to stop the 'climbpro' screen taking over? I hate it when I'm trying to use maps, then climbpro pops up and I can't see the map anymore! Happy to have the feature run in the background, but it's so annoying when you need the map, or want to see your data, but Garmin decides that the profile of the climb is more important. I've missed many turns from this annoying popup.
This video is super helpful! Any way to disable the new PR (distance, elevation gain, etc)? My 1050 tell be a hit a new PR each day regardless of the distance..
You have got some fantastic quality roads and cycle paths. Makes the UK look like an undeveloped country in comparison. Anyway. Am I right in thinking that when you upgrade from one Garmin computer to another Garmin computer, it will ask you if you want to transfer your customised settings from the old unit to the new unit? I seem to remember that being the case making a lot of these settings a one-time requirement.
I'm sometimes hate the virtual partner but it can also be usefull to see where you are going (if you are slower). By the way is there a way to change the color of the climbs on the maps, the green is not so clear and I have missed a few turns because I thought it wasn't there (because of the other green on the map)?
There's no known 'fix' that I'm aware of. Only a series of things to try such as firmware updates, factory reset, delete then add your WiFi network again, etc.
Less is more 👍🏻. The old weather warning about severe wind (or something like that) was so annoying. One feature I had ONCE and never again was after I completed a favorite segment and it compared my time to a Recent PB. Wow I wish I could trigger that again
I have an older Garmin 800 series Edge, and the lap default at 1 km, so a ride would be endless notifications, so I changed it in settings to 50 km's per lap, which covers about 99% of my rides so I wouldn't really get lap notifications
It’s overwhelming the amount of features in the Garmins compared to the Wahoos. Not saying, I’d miss any of those and at least I don’t have to dig and turn off 10+ features on a new device.
Will a Trainerroad outdoor workout still show up on the screen if I turn off the training plan options? Winter is coming here now. I won't need it for a while, but next summer I will have forgotten I have turn this off.
VP is as useful as teats on a bull. An annoying distraction. Please how can I disable it 😢. As well I really appreciate these helpful tips and pointers. I am about to configure 30 units for a tour group and knowing how to keep the profile screen as simple as possible is vital. Thanks.
Is there a way to remove the power too high/power too low warning that comes up when doing a workout? I had to rearrange the screen as I had my power data in the fields at the bottom, which were then covered by the annoying warning..
also hazards have to be improved, I got warnings about hazards from streets parallel to mine (100m from my position, but I won't go there and my current road doesn't take me there)
On my Edge 1050 I have this workout ready to go on my homescreen. I haven't configured any workouts, nor do I have anything setup like plans or anything. It just shows me a little box in the middle of the homescreen, with a "Base" workout. I can't find anywhere to remove this. Tried via the Connect app on my phone as well, it's driving me nuts because it's so completely useless. It's right in between "Last ride" and where a new course is shows after it's just loaded. Any ideas on how to remove this little box? Unfortunately, the option in your video is not how it's shown to me.
I quite like virtual partner to be honest, as it gives an indication if I am ahead or behind the ETA displayed on the device. At least I think that’s how it works.
I'd like an option to switch the Nutrition data entry from calories to grams of carbohydrate. I don't mind entering my nutrition and hydration info after a long ride, but I plan and track my nutrition in grams of carbohydrate, and have no idea how that translates to calories. Also, what is virtual partner even for?
Before binning Virtual Partner, please give us a tutorial on how to use it correctly. I have never got it to work correctly but it’s probably me and not Garmin.
My friend keeps telling me to update my computer so I have all the extras now available. I really don't see what I need or want other than speed, cadence, HR, incline and crash reports to my partners phone. Room for power and basic navigation is a nice extra but after that... I'm good ta
Brands like Garmin keep to add useless features just to justify the outrageous price of their devices. Especially when cycling, the less distraction you have from technology and from notifications/messages/phone calls etc, the more enjoyable and SAFE is the ride. Just choose a different brand/device that doesn't close you in it's ecosystem and that do not charge for "screen-attractive" features you never need or use. ...but it is quite obvious that a lot of people like to be closed in a proprietary ecosystem and spend money on well marketed brand new devices, so your advice of disabling all this features are welcomed!
I wish Garmin would let me disable the post-ride summary or at least let it auto-timeout after an hour or so. Most frequently I'm having to hit the two checkmarks to advance from that screen to home the next day before my next ride.
Thank you, all those features are crap and really annoying; including climb pro. After recent update i get warnings about high traffic roads and non existent pot holes…it’s annoyingly crap. I know the roads i ride on, so 99% of the time it is all unnecessary. The features are meant to be useful but they actually take your attention off the road and that is not good! Then…save ride: how many water bottles did you drink? how many calories?….FFS, just save the ride.

@Shane Miller since a few firmware versions v24 (E1040S) despite the switch on the unit and the same on the mobile GC - there is no ‘Training Effect’ notification after the activity.

One feature I had ONCE and never again was after I completed a favorite segment and it compared my time to a Recent PB. Wow I wish I could trigger that again
hey Shane, why haven't we gotten elevation profile in free ride mode? only thing I miss about my Roam V2
Good question. That’s such a useful feature on the Wahoo units.
Perfect. As a new 840 solar owner your channel has been invaluable. Subbed.
Welcome aboard!
I live in the middle of the country side in France have an edge explorer 2 when it comes up sharp bend it is correct .
Will a Trainerroad outdoor workout still show up on the screen if I turn off the training plan options? Winter is coming here now. I won't need it for a while, but next summer I will have forgotten I have turn this off.
did i see some chirons by the side of the road there? they need to be careful.....😂
I actually want to see everything you removed! Here in Italy autolap is disabled by default... had to find my way to turn it on (5km by default)...
VP is as useful as teats on a bull. An annoying distraction. Please how can I disable it 😢. As well I really appreciate these helpful tips and pointers. I am about to configure 30 units for a tour group and knowing how to keep the profile screen as simple as possible is vital. Thanks.
Thanks.
Virtual Partner removal. Yeah they go up the road and almost never wait. Just rubbing it in by finishing first and poof gone when I get to the finish.
Is there a way to remove the power too high/power too low warning that comes up when doing a workout?
I had to rearrange the screen as I had my power data in the fields at the bottom, which were then covered by the annoying warning..
You need to say to swipe left on the training glance to remove. I had to look up other places to find that little detail.
Oh, sorry. It does a little shimmy left animation to reveal the trash icon.
Thank You 👊!
also hazards have to be improved, I got warnings about hazards from streets parallel to mine (100m from my position, but I won't go there and my current road doesn't take me there)
On my Edge 1050 I have this workout ready to go on my homescreen.
Awesome we can remove daily suggested workout from the Home Screen. How about the ‘Last ride’?
I quite like virtual partner to be honest, as it gives an indication if I am ahead or behind the ETA displayed on the device. At least I think that’s how it works.
Need at magpie alert ;)
I'd like an option to switch the Nutrition data entry from calories to grams of carbohydrate. I don't mind entering my nutrition and hydration info after a long ride, but I plan and track my nutrition in grams of carbohydrate, and have no idea how that translates to calories. Also, what is virtual partner even for?
I find that high traffic roads alerts pop up when I’m near a roundabout or a busy intersection or traffic junction
Yeah. I had it pop up as I was crossing a 110km/h freeway.... not great timing!
@@gplama :O
Before binning Virtual Partner, please give us a tutorial on how to use it correctly. I have never got it to work correctly but it’s probably me and not Garmin.
it's not you; virtual partner just sucks hard
you know when kickr v7 is releasing?
Thanks Shane !
Sharp bend warnings in Taiwan has been on point.
Just choose a different brand/device that doesn't close you in it's ecosystem and that do not charge for "screen-attractive" features you never need or use.
...but it is quite obvious that a lot of people like to be closed in a proprietary ecosystem and spend money on well marketed brand new devices, so your advice of disabling all this features are welcomed!
on the 530 I could see how much intervals I had to do. In mij 540, I don't. Am I missing something?
Nice! Does anyone know how to get the Garmin to stop telling you every time the Varia has a connection error?
this is a "safety feature" and therefore cannot be removed/defeated. You're welcome
I change “heads up” to “north up” navigation
I wish Garmin would let me disable the post-ride summary or at least let it auto-timeout after an hour or so. Most frequently I'm having to hit the two checkmarks to advance from that screen to home the next day before my next ride.
absolutely agree. I dont want to have to go through past ride summary screens the next day when starting a new ride
How do you turn off the overheating option on the 1040 Solar when recharging with USB? Mine now gets so warm it has melted the cable.
Contact Garmin
One day I will banish the Virtual Partner back to whichever circle of hell it crawled out of.
How can you remove the danger button when you touch on your garmin that you see after 00:30 in your video
great
Thank you, all those features are crap and really annoying; including climb pro.
Really dislike virtual partner, ability to remove that would be near the top of my list of desired software update features.
most annoying thing is "warning unpaved road" warning ! while i'm in a big city ! and I saw that message every 20-30 seconds ! I don't know even where those roads were.
The necessity of this type of video perfectly sums up the terrible UX of Garmin products. It's 2024, Garmin. You can do it better for *uck sake!
