With the numerous rollers and climbs here I'm really excited as well. It's actually quite faster than I expected too which is great to see. In the past my Edge would hilariously report negative gradients while I'm already mid-way onto a steep roller which made look it funny when you overlay stats from your FIT file if you recorded the ride.
Well, this isn't it. This update is much worse than the beta we had before 24.18. On previous and obvious climbs which the prior software correctly identified as a climb, our 840s present a 0% or even a descent grade. Again, this version is much worse, particularly in rollers and 1-3% climbs. They had it, but lost it for some reason.
I’m so glad I bought the Edge 1040. I got it in a sale and the fact that the updates from 1050 models syncing with the x40 series. The Edge 1050 is not worth the price for a better display and less battery life. This is the reason why a lot of people don’t buy the Hammerhead brand because it has a great display but a terrible battery life
I watch all of these updates to keep track of what I'm missing even though I'm still using an old refurbished Edge 530... I keep telling myself I'll finally upgrade when it dies but apparently these devices last forever! 😂
The gradient upgrade is fantastic and long awaited. About eight years ago I was in regular contact with Garmin about this and they were a bit dismissive, I even moved to Hammerhead for a while, big mistake! This is a good as I need it now and another reason to love my 1040s, still can't justify moving to 1050!
Seems Garmin Coach is basically the daily suggested workout feature imo. I've tested it with my Forerunner 955 and the suggestions are almost the same if you set a race of the same date. The only difference from what I've seen is that you can actually see the workouts on the calendar while on DSW you could only see it on your device. Pretty neat imo, especially if your device doesn't support DSW natively (e.g. Garmin Venu, Edge 530 series etc...). One tip I usually do is create a fake event if you don't have any race in mind to join depending on what kind of capability I'd like to work on. If I wanna improve climbing, you could easily create an event with a course that's very hilly even if it's not from your own backyard (e.g. EU famous climbs), if I wanna improve my punchy power, add a course that has rollers and set a goal time/speed. If it's similar to how DSW works, it will tailor your suggested workouts based on the course profile and goal you've set. I usually use the DSW workouts as a guide on how I make my structured workouts when training, as it's a free version of Trainer Road's Train now feature imo.
I had my 1030+ for 4 years and was perfectly happy with it, I would've thought Garmin would've brought the 1040 features to the 1030+ like they did for the 1030. Seeing as there was not much hope for these updates I just sold my 1030+ for a 1040, the 1030+ is effectively obsolete and from what I gathered unlikely to get any meaningful updates
This is just the way these companies operate. They need to sell new units. However, everything still works as well as before the 1050 introduction, no functionality has been taken away, and the 1030 Plus is still a great unit. The 1050 doesn't make the 1030+ or 1040 a worse unit somehow.
I just want them to fix the syncing of the daily workout suggestion - Epix 2 is my primary device, sync that and the 1040, yet nearly everyday 1040 only suggests a rest day. Super frustrating Great review, cheers.
I can only imagine the mess that it is internally at Garmin between their various software tech teams for their to be such a lack of homogeneity across their devices...
Garmin Connect should really have a better way of seeing reported hazards than having to go into the course creator. A simple map where you could see reported hazards in your area before going out would be great.
I've been running this (and the preceding few betas) and of my gosh thank goodness is update far more stable than the betas of late. Road hazards are interesting, but functionally useless in places like NYC, where an alert could be for any one of 10 potholes
Great update. Thank you. From my experience, I’m finding the white text on red background when notice of hazards come up are hard to read. I wonder if others are experiencing the same
I noticed there’s a difference in the way Strava Live Segments work. Previously if you were ahead of your PR or KOM it would show +0:01 for example, but if you were behind the time it would show -0:01. After the update this switched around. I was riding a segment and thought I was getting a new PR only to hear the sound that I missed it.
Great video as always, Lama. It’s a good update from Garmin, but I’ll still find something to complain about… 🙄 I do wish they had added some of the new fields on the 1050 to the 1040, to keep them consistent. There are a couple of new graphical fields for power that look good - one that looks like a speedo with coloured bands for zones and another that shows a live bar chart view of how long you’ve spent in each zone (a bit like on the new Zwift HUD). They look more useful than the existing three on the 1040. I think there are Connect IQ third-party fields etc, but I’d prefer something native. Maybe pushing the processing power of the 1040 too far? But how can third-party devs do it if Garmin can’t? Also, nice if Garmin had updated the data fields appendix in the 1050 manual to reflect changes in the new unit rather than just copy & paste the appendix from the 1040 manual… I’ve never found documentation their strong point. 😉
I actually contact Garmin about not have preset 12 speed for XPLR on there even though it has been out for a while. The rep agreed that should be there.

The update wiped all of my presets and profiles... I am pretty sure that is what caused it! I called Garmin and tried to retrieve the old set up but had no luck.
Great information ! Question: Is there actually a way to quickly switch back and forth between the zoom view of a map and an overall view of a map while driving with a 1040? What I'm missing is simply an overview of where I am on the planned tour (gpx via komoot). Clicking using the + and - buttons is not practical. Maybe with another separate map page/dashboard but I didn't manage to do that either. Thanks for hints

Thanks for this. I note that I can't share courses from my 1040 to my 1030 plus. There grade I will wait to see if its improved for me I usually ignore the reported grade as its so laggy and I continue to have incorrectly reported grades like Im going uphill and the Garmin reports downhill. Thankfully the downloaded file is accurate.
First time I ever tried hazard reports it shown up on my Garmin course on my account afterwards. After that it doesn't seem to be working. Only thing I can think of is (do you have to have your Garmin Connect app open on your phone throughout your ride & your phone connected to it?). I'm only asking as I would prefer not to have my data & Bluetooth on during long rides out, so I know I will have enough phone charge until I return home safely.
I've been using the newest beta but the grade changes have still been lagging 5-10 seconds behind. I really hope this new version finally fixes that but I believe it when I see it...
Also am update to the Virtual Partner, you can set an average speed, e.g. 22kmph - makes more sense than the previous xx% BTW, after installing the update, my Garmin radar no longer notified the headset when cars were approaching, quickly fixed(after the first ride)
Hi. Question. I’m using VAM excessive. Since Edge 520 I could realise quite a big delay in the numbers. I’m already riding up the hill for 15-20 sec and garmin still shows -vam. That’s why I switched to wahoo. Can somebody tell me if it is still like this. Thanks.
Ty for the video. Just one question here. How do you get these condensed datafields on the map navigation? I'm unable to find those. Especially the one with watt, distance, heartrate and such
This update still doesnt fix the huge backlight issue of the garmin 840. It basically works completely the wrong way around. screen gets dark when its dark outside and vice versa. Have you seen the topic on the garmin forums?
It's maddening! I can't see the damn thing with london over cast days under tree cover. Have had to resort to the back light being on 70% permanently and carrying a usb charger
I am seeing inconsistent behavior regarding auto brightness and backlight in FW24.18. The first few times after powering it on, the display was difficult to see even with the backlight on. With auto brightness still enabled, I increased the brightness slider. When I did that, that seemed to have set a floor on how dim the backlight was allowed to go to. But that brightness setting (on the slider) did not survive a power off/on. I did a few more power off/on and only once did the display have an acceptable brightness level with the backlight on (Edge 840 did not automatically move the brightness slider all the way to the left in the dark closet).
It's the same like mobile phone automatic brightness. Darker, when it's dark, brighter when it's bright-ish. The Garmin auto brightness turns the backlight off when it's really bright around. Makes sense
is there any way by using a satellite communicator like the Motorola defy or mini 2, where you can pair the 1040 to allow for livetrack while not in cell service?
Great new stuff. My biggest wish is Garmin would do away with their fixation on the seven shades of purple they use in maps. Can we get something more contrasty? I mean, it's a tiny little screen and too often I can't tell if the route I'm following is just some purple road at a glance.
Thanks for keeping up on this. Go to for update info. On my unit after the update I no longer see the screen record option. I did the lower right long press on "home" screen and the option isn't there anymore. How did you get the screen records on the video?
@@gplama Thanks for the response. I thought I was on Beta software. Does updating after the public release negate the beta software options? I didn't update when I first got the prompts a little while ago
I have not been able to received any updates to my Edge 540 Solar since 24.15, the WiFi update software check just spins and never finds it. The device also stopped being able to receive map updates through Garmin express and will error out when trying to connect. The latest is the device will no longer repair with my phone with Garmin connect app. My question is, does anyone know how to manually update the software to 24.19 or downgrade to the latest non beta release? I think that’s the only option I have to solve my issues but can’t find any support online.
Who doesn‘t love a nice „fitness status: -2“ message on an already shit day in the rain. 😂 The map sharing is good for psychological warfare. Imagine being on the edge of cracking with 2k to go and „Pogi wants to share route »extra loop«“ pops up on your screen.
I updated my 1040 and my climb pro does not work, also when save a ride no map is shown on Strava, Had to export file from Garmin. Always seem to have issues with Garmin. Not good . This update has completely messed up my Garmin. in the bin it goes.
Unfortunately, this latest still does not address my main gripe about the 840: when the display is set to autobrightness, it's too dim under low light condition. Lately, since a few beta firmwares ago, my 840 will become unresponsive for about 10 seconds after powering the unit up. I am also experiencing that in this new firmware.
The hazard warnings are a great feature. Used it on an audax a couple of weeks ago and genuinely useful in a couple of spots. The only worry I have living in the UK, though, is that the number of pothole warnings will soon begin to multiply exponentially now that 24.18 is on general release. Can see in a year’s time that I’ve turned off the alerts because they’re almost continuous. Maybe Garmin could make the alerts more granular, so the user can choose to only get certain hazards flashing up. Or, even better, just have an algorithm that says when a certain number of pothole warnings are present on a stretch of road, turn the surface type to gravel. The UK will then take over from the US and Australia as the world’s foremost gravel riding venue…😁
That algorithm really should exist. Is you are going down an alpine switchback descent, you don‘t need „sharp corner“ every 20 seconds, you need „switchback descent for the next 7k“. Where is AI when you need it?
My 1040 is totally screwed gradient up after this update. 15% climb shows -3%, 8% climb became 1%. I live in north VA USA. They just released new update today. I will see if this problem fixed or not...
Do you think that Garmin might consider displaying gradients down to tenths of a percent (e.g., 5.3% instead of just 5%) like Wahoo headunits do? There is significant difference between an x.1% and an x.9% gradient. 11:00
Thanks for the update review. Unfortunately I have zero success with the map manager on my edge 840. The download always stalls at some low%, it never finishes. I still have to use Garmin Express. Furthermore the map manager shows „update available“ for latest/same map version. Did anyone test these functions before release?

Hi Shane, have you, or any of your subscribers, experienced the Garmin pausing/starting/pausing/starting etc. whilst riding? This has happened to my 540 (which i returned thinking it was faulty) and now happens on my 840. I’ve never experinced this with any other Garmin cycling computer over the past 20 years. Garmin wont respond to my questions. Any ideas?
I wish they would rather fix all the bugs and flakiness. The longer I use my 840 the worse it gets. Almost no ride auto syncs anymore without a restart. Same with routes, getting them synced over is an exercise in frustration. That it regularly looses connection to all ant sensors and needs a reboot to fix doesn’t help either.
It’s extremely unlikely they’ll see any of these updates. There’s a general bug fix update for those in beta people have been expecting to go live/public for months.
@@grzegorzprzebierowski Or changing routes while riding, which was possible years ago? Completely switching off Virtual Partner, so you don't get that damned icon? You must be kidding! This Sunday, my pricey 1030+ crashed at the end of a very simple 80km ride, right at T2 of a Tri race. I am so finished with Garmin.

No. And I wouldn't expect any feature releases for that unit in the future. I've spoken about this in the past - I think they sunset that unit way too early.

Do you think with these updates the 1040 is a better competitor to say the Karoo 2? I own a K2, was thinking about the 1050, but cost, and this update to the 1040, its more appealing
No doubt these updates make the x40 series more appealing. RE: Which is best: There's a ton of ways to carve up which bike computer is 'best' - the conclusion is there's no one 'best' that suits everyone. Garmin Edge units are without question unmatched when it comes to features and extensibility options (via ConnectIQ). Although all the bells (pun intended for the 1050) and whistles aren't for everyone. Wahoo have nailed the ease-of-use side of things which appeals to a wide spectrum of the market. Hammerhead/Karoo... well.. They've been laying very low lately in regard to updates/feature additions that we were all hoping to see roll out to take advantage of the new hardware on the K3.
12:45 maybe this on-device map management does not look exciting but you will find how good it is as soon as you head off to your holidays and only in the location you realise that you was stupid enough to not load the maps... I swear - I could find anybody who wanted to install Garmin Express and keep my Garmin connected for an hour or so to download and install the map ....
1040 for battery life. 1050 for an awesome screen party! :) I suspect this will be the last big feature release for the x40 series, even if it does have the capacity for more.
Is there a way to get the old map layout back? The old one was way better. On the old one tiny paths looked like tiny paths. With the new layout tiny paths look like highways.

They’ll appear on the map screen at about 500m zoom and closer (iirc). Are the icons showing up late? Firmware 24.19 was released in beta yesterday. Maybe give that a shot. Also ensure your maps/everything is up to date.

Yes. I’ll dig into this more when the magpies start really swooping. Details over on the Garmin site here: support.garmin.com/en-AU/?faq=NH7WCMesvK3XU1gurECewA
I hope they finally "fix" how climb pro and the map is interacting. No map while having active navigation and force the map when no navigation is active is a - let say - an interesting decision. It would expect it to be the other way round. But even then: why not just make it a toggle option for users to decide?
@@andorsnhow do you add a map widget to the climb pro screen? There is no such option. That's exactly the issue. The map only shows on climb pro if you are NOT having a route/navigation loaded. It's completely dumb.

Unfortunately in 24.19 garmin totally f*cked up the real time gradient improvement. It is now way of on every climb! (edge 1040)
Screen record is only enabled on beta firmware unfortunately.
@@gplama Thanks for the response. I thought I was on Beta software. Does updating after the public release negate the beta software options? I didn't update when I first got the prompts a little while ago
hi i see you use map dashboard...do you know if the "ascent" field is it actually "total climb" ?
Hello, how can you view the wind direction information? Is it only possible with training or something like that? thank you
Is there a big difference in detail on a 1040 vs1050 display with a lower resolution? Is there a lack of detail on the maps?
I have not been able to received any updates to my Edge 540 Solar since 24.15, the WiFi update software check just spins and never finds it. The device also stopped being able to receive map updates through Garmin express and will error out when trying to connect. The latest is the device will no longer repair with my phone with Garmin connect app. My question is, does anyone know how to manually update the software to 24.19 or downgrade to the latest non beta release? I think that’s the only option I have to solve my issues but can’t find any support online.
Is magpie defending feature included by now? 😂
Thanks Shane, updated today. That windfield thing was great but caused the device to drop sendors. Is that issue fixed. It was commonly reported.
No issues with my testing/riding with multiple sensors and WindField. Make sure everything js updated (including WindField and all ConnectIQ apps).
Who doesn‘t love a nice „fitness status: -2“ message on an already shit day in the rain. 😂
The map sharing is good for psychological warfare.
Anyone else experience that the search by address feature seems to have been removed with the new firmware version (Edge 840 NS)?
Granular alerts - great idea!
That algorithm really should exist. Is you are going down an alpine switchback descent, you don‘t need „sharp corner“ every 20 seconds, you need „switchback descent for the next 7k“. Where is AI when you need it?
GP, can the training plans be added to the Google and Outlook calendars?
My 1040 is totally screwed gradient up after this update. 15% climb shows -3%, 8% climb became 1%. I live in north VA USA. They just released new update today. I will see if this problem fixed or not...
Does anyone know if there's a way to decrease the timer on the lap banner
Do you think that Garmin might consider displaying gradients down to tenths of a percent (e.g., 5.3% instead of just 5%) like Wahoo headunits do? There is significant difference between an x.1% and an x.9% gradient. 11:00
Unlikely. I really don't think these devices are accurate enough for 10ths.
Great video Shane. Hold on any idea if they’re going to allow us to have the ability to rename our Pages on our Garmin and Garmin connect
I wish the previous version back.
Stability of this new version is reduced.
Had spontaneous reboot during the ride already two times 😢
Previous version never
Any chance the coaching will get the strength training for cyclists that the Fenix 8 adds? Seems like edge users could use that
Will the garmin edge 1030 plus also get an update later?
I don’t think the x30 series will see any further feature updates.
That it regularly looses connection to all ant sensors and needs a reboot to fix doesn’t help either.
these data screens in your Edge 1040 and 1050 are dope, are they custom-built? I can't find them in the list of screens in my edge 1040.

My 1040 shuts itself down after some time when I try to download new maps. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?
What buttons/actions bring up the Hazard reporting feature?
Great to see elevation improvements, will make climbpro more useful.
Single screen tap will bring up the option to select the hazard reporting menu.
@@gplama But the 540 isn't touch screen.
Hello, do you think the 530/830/1030+ series will ever receive an update?
It’s extremely unlikely they’ll see any of these updates. There’s a general bug fix update for those in beta people have been expecting to go live/public for months.
@@gplama What Garmin should absolutely fix is Strava Live Segments - working when navigation is turned on
@@grzegorzprzebierowski Or changing routes while riding, which was possible years ago? Completely switching off Virtual Partner, so you don't get that damned icon? You must be kidding!
This Sunday, my pricey 1030+ crashed at the end of a very simple 80km ride, right at T2 of a Tri race. I am so finished with Garmin.
530 user, the first thing I would like to have is the grade improvement.
@@gplama Would those upgrades to the 830 Series at least pertain to the gradient?
Hello, can you compare Garmin, Wahoo, Magene, and iGPSPORT in grade precision?
It would be nice if they continued at least the basic updates for the 1030+. I shouldn't need a new computer to use my Sram bonus buttons to swipe screens.
No update software for the 1030plus????
No. And I wouldn't expect any feature releases for that unit in the future. I've spoken about this in the past - I think they sunset that unit way too early.
How to create such map screen. Looks nice and with lot of info. Like wind direction etc. but I do not see this possible with 2-4 fields map view

@@gplama cool, thank you
I updated and the climbpro when I’m NOT following a course didn’t work for me. And I was definitely climbing hills that should have shown
Is there any way to display your Garmin recommended recovery time in the phone app??? I hate that I have to go check on my Edge device…
Not sure on that one. A good question for Garmin support.
Nice video. Please can you make one of coarse creator.
I can not find it Connect???
Hazard is pretty cool, indeed, but when riding at night.... it doesn't turn on the screen light like Varia does
Drats - nothing for the 130 Plus? That bug where it doesn't update the elevation & gradient properly after turning the unit off & on during an activity is absolutely ridiculous!
thanks Shane - pity there is no GoPro control (as yet)
The best GoPro remote I’ve found is their own little remote device.
@@gplama If you have a garmin watch you can use that to control your gopro via a ConnectIQ app from the store, works pretty well. Would've been nice if you could use your edge computer directly though, I haven't checked if you could install the ConnectIQ app to Edge.
I swear - I could find anybody who wanted to install Garmin Express and keep my Garmin connected for an hour or so to download and install the map ....
i hope there is someone who do this on forerunners too
Is it still worth getting the 1040 vs 1050? How long will this dripdown realistically happen before it hits the limits of the x40s internals?
1040 for battery life. 1050 for an awesome screen party! :) I suspect this will be the last big feature release for the x40 series, even if it does have the capacity for more.
Sometime I think it is the gps chip in the units why the show different grade what u think?
These devices use an altimeter for gradient. support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=sFMkjQFdnZ99DcunfAue66
Thanks Garmin for overlooking the 1030plus users… 🥺😩
Any rumors on the release of a EDGE 850? 1050 is too big
What about the 1030? Does this update apply?
No
Is there a way to get the old map layout back? The old one was way better. On the old one tiny paths looked like tiny paths. With the new layout tiny paths look like highways.
Solved the Problem. By disabling Popularität map and Unpaved Roads. Finally the map is usable again.
Is the grede climb update comming to the xx30 ?
No
I'm trying to update my Explore 2 but the update is not available, I'm confused.
Phased roll-out might mean this isn’t available for all units yet. If you want to get the jump then enroll into the public beta program.
@@gplama Thank you for replying! That sounds good. I just enrolled but I'm not sure how to get the update after enrolling. I still haven't got the update on my unit, and I'm really unhappy with the grade feature, it's always delayed. I even had the unit completely stuck on 0% for the whole ride and during climbs, not sure what's going on. I contacted the customer support but they haven't been helpful so far.
Since I updated the firmware yesterday my Edge 1040 refuses to connect to my Windows 11 PC. :-(
I had to update the app
so with this update, what is the point in the 1050 over the 1040?
The screen.
@@gplamaand a bell 😂
How you added end data field ?
End data field? I don’t understand your question sorry.
5yr old 530 having issues, buy 540 or wait for 550 / bolt 🤔
I can only guess - but I think you'll be waiting until next year to see any updates to the 540/840.
I am finding the new road hazard alerts a bit late on my 1040S, meaning i am on top of or just past the hazard when the alert hits???? Anyone else seeing this?
They’ll appear on the map screen at about 500m zoom and closer (iirc). Are the icons showing up late? Firmware 24.19 was released in beta yesterday. Maybe give that a shot. Also ensure your maps/everything is up to date.
@@gplama well the alert is showing up late. Maybe i need to change settings?
Still trying to figure out how to kill off Virtual Partner after all these years. Anyone have any ideas?
I have my Edge840 on the Beta program and this week on a road ride the one "climb" on my route started while I was still going down the decent prior to the climb #lessthanideal
Maps fully updated?
@@gplama I believe I had just updated them the week prior. I don't have it handy to check the last map update date though.

Does the road hazard warning expire after a time?
Yes. I’ll dig into this more when the magpies start really swooping. Details over on the Garmin site here: support.garmin.com/en-AU/?faq=NH7WCMesvK3XU1gurECewA
Segments still don’t work when navigating 👎 wahoo can make it happen, shame that Garmin can’t.
Is there going to be an 850 soon?
I wouldn’t expect it any time this year. Garmin will be busy releasing another 355822 watches before we’ll see the 550/850. 😉
I hope they finally "fix" how climb pro and the map is interacting. No map while having active navigation and force the map when no navigation is active is a - let say - an interesting decision. It would expect it to be the other way round. But even then: why not just make it a toggle option for users to decide?
Does that happen when you add a map widget to the ClimbPro screen? Or are you talking about ClimbPro automatically popping up, which can be disabled?
@@andorsnhow do you add a map widget to the climb pro screen? There is no such option. That's exactly the issue.
The map only shows on climb pro if you are NOT having a route/navigation loaded. It's completely dumb.
@@SillyMochi ah, you're right. TBH I only saw the screenshot in GPLama's screen setup video and assumed it was configurable. Garmin 🤷♂
