So grade now finally changes as fast as it used to on the Edge 510 - a device released over a decade ago. Congratulations Garmin, you've done it again.
MTP is an object/file based system so it's harder to corrupt the device. MSD OTOH lets any sector on the device be modified in any way so a lot more corruptible. i assume that's why they made the switch. I really wish they had left the MSD support in though, you can support both at the same time on a USB device.
Thank you for informative video, as always! I was expecting some serious software updates (like fixing segments, irritating eat/drink notifications customization, menu re-ordering etc) but now I just can't wait for your update on new Wahoo Ace.
Interesting video but even more important right now, I envy you seeing this temperatures. Living right now on the wrong side of the world I had a very "nice" rice at 13 degree celsius. :(
I'm on the 1040 public beta stream and the re-routing has been terrible lately. If I deliberately go one block off course and click re-route it just sends me home by the shortest means possible. I have to then reload the original course to get my navigation back. It was fine a month ago, not sure what happened.
I wish they would make the 3 buttons at the top (hand, +, -) disappear when riding. Especially the middle one covers the part of the road you need to see.
Reading the comments its amazing the different things that are important to different riders. For me i hardly ever "plug in" any gps i have. And having just switched to wahoo im kind of missing the virtual partner. Maybe its just because i dont have any friends and i then have a riding buddy.
You 'ignored' the important elapsed timer fix.At the moment strava ridden with and flyby are not working ok on x40 devices if the device is turned to sleep.
I wrote to them about stopping, powering off, and resuming but was told the truncated file output was normal... I'm glad they revised their standpoint.
The switch to MTP is good. I've had my edge 1040 hard locked (ie won't start) until I factory reset because I forgot to unmount it before disconnecting.
After the last update (not this one), the battery life on my 1040 has plummeted. I haven't found much in the forums, so I'm curious if you've seen anything similar.
Someday I should upgrade my Wahoo Elemnt Bolt v1. I'd jump ship and go to Garmin if it had better POI database support (such that I can use my own POI database) so I watch these videos to see if any product line is going in the right direction. It's not just an issue for the head unit, of course; it's also an issue for whatever route planning software one uses. I'm not sure if MTP vs USB mass storage would be much of a factor, but I upload all my planned routes to my Wahoo Element via USB mass storage. One time, back in 2019, I tried using the route planning built into my device and after that never bothered again. It's not really the fault of these units; rather, it's the lack of a decent database of road types for my part of the world.
On another topic. Is there anyway to load satellite maps to the edge like before using Birdseye? I tried with Caltopo Pro but the files are KMZ on not IMG. Couldn’t find an app to convert kmz to img.
I've put in a bug report for that missing field. Hacks me off that they get my hopes up only to dash them with their poor change control on their change logs. I never learn.
After the last update, my 1040 grade completely broke, saying I'm was doing 1% on 15% hills and other massive under estimations both up and down hill. Lots of people on the forum experiencing the same. Garmin offered to swap the device for a refurb unit, but I don't see how that will help, as it must be firmware related. I wonder if this update will fix it.
Often, when the altimeter gets wet or dirty it starts acting up. Its a very old and well known thing with garmin computers (had 2 replacement 530 beacuse of that). But somehow its better on the 540. It has odd readings when it gets wet, but when it drys it back to normal whereas the old ones where constantly broken.
The only time I access a file is to drop in a ride I created on Ride with GPS. If this gets to be a problem for me I will buy a different brand bike computer. I'm not the most computer savvy when it comes to playing with files.
It seems to be an upgrade. This MTP thingy has a lot of "advantages"! I can’t wait to see how they’ll present the final version: "Trust us! You need it! We know better what you want!"
love your posts - have you done a review video on the wahoo roller? if you haven't can you try it 1st without any power meters linked to the 'roller' why I am asked for you do this is because I have just blow out a rear tyre due to heat and friction (melted tyre and 3 broken spokes) - In the instruction you can link the 'roller' to the wahoo app and control the system from there - Still didn't work - I have given it to a friend that has a set of power peddles which unlocks the roller and allows you to ride - when you are 1st starting out to ride - wahoo need to fully inform the buyer of the extra cost involved - hence the kicker maybe a better option for a beginner that is on a budget - your thoughts
I have two problems with my 1040 Solar: 1) All sensors disconnect a few minutes after waking up, then reconnect about 5 minutes later. 2) The physical connection now gets very hot when being recharged over USB.

They've got to be trolling us with the Virtual Partner at this point, since the crashes I've been setting mine to Ludicrous Speed so he just buggers off. 🏁🚴
and I'm already sick and tired of Garmin and its capricious behavior. I also have an 830. Garmin Connect updated a few days ago. And Garmin decided to disconnect all devices. I start riding with the club and... I can't connect, send a route. Nothing. Garmin decided that right now it won't want to detect the device. I'm really sick of it. Constant messages on the device - most of them nonsensical. Navigation after getting lost leading to the point where you got lost and not the fastest way to get back on track, constant problems with sending routes, no possibility to send a route during activity. Too many of these annoying things. The next choice is definitely Wahoo.
Can someone please help me. My 540 Navigation does not zoom in or out when navigating and approaching a turn on a slower speed/or faster. Does not matter, it does not zoom in/out like it used to.
When will they ever learn? The average use does NOT want to know about 'MTP' or connectivity issues. They just want bug free, plug and play, nice and simple.
At this point I believe they keep pushing buggy and crash-prone devices just because they can. I am still flabbergasted how users can put up with years and constant generations of failure-prone devices instead of simply moving on to other brands.
How can there still be issues with phone connections that need to be fixed in 2024? How many years have Garmin devices been able to connect to phones. Every time there is a new generation of devices from Garmin, the same old issues appear...
Tell that to BMW, who also don't seem to manage to get it right. It's a general problem. My car is 1 year old, so is my phone. Sometimes when I get out of my car and get back in within a few minutes, the phone refuses to connect to the car. I need to reboot the iDrive, sometimes multiple times, before the connection comes back.
So we won't be able to upload any route when offline? I can create a Gpx track using one of the offline maps app, but without Internet access I cannot send it via *Bluetooth* to my Garmin as Connect needs to access their servers for some reason (guess to preprocess the Gpx etc.) - this made me really frustrated once I realized... First and foremost, the aforementioned notification tone issue is a deal breaker. How is it that Wahoo has a better implementation of the Varia radar system than Garmin? With my Wahoo head unit the warning and clear tones are audible and consistent. My Edge 1040 often does not sound an alert, and when it does the tone is inaudible in normal riding environment. Garmin even sent me a replacement unit...no joy. Garmin's solution? Pay an additional USD 200 for the new 1050. Simple tasks like locating and loading cycling workouts is a mystery. I gave my 840 as a test to a friend of mine who uses a Wahoo. I told him to load a stored route so he could ride it. He didn't find it :D
@@irfuel I guess my hearing is defective in the frequency used by Garmin. It's ultra high and VERY low volume compared to both Wahoo Elemnt Roam 2 and Wahoo Bolt v1. Aside from affecting radar, nav cues and workout cues super low...at least for me
Not really related, but how did you add the colorful bar that shows your current power zone? For example, the climbing in video that starts at 7:00 mark, the power zones bar at the bottom. Is this an IQ app from the store?
@gplama I am currently running the 24.19 on my 1040 and when I go to manage maps, I can see my current installed maps. But I can't either install new maps, as it show "no maps available" or update the current once on the device, I am still on 23/10 but 24/10 is available, which dis played as update on the Garmin Express. Any I idea how to fix this on my 1040? DB updates are really no fun, e.g Express shows me 12 hours update time for Europe. No idea what Garmin does here. AN of course the update stops in-between and you need to start all over again, last time I did spend one week, till the update finally was done. They should download the DB beforehand with Express and than install, this would be much more customer friendly. Not sure if MTP will improve this or make things even worse for the update.
I'd like to know how MTP is going to help with the manual file manipulation when updating multiple large map files. That process, or lack of from Garmin, is pathetic
The start/stop button on my 540 has stopped working (not as clicky as the lap button, all other buttons work though). I was thinking about replacing it but now I’ll try Wahoo instead. Every Garmin gps I have had has failed in some way (530 wifi uploads died and the USB charging port barely works) and I’m sick of giving this company premium money for trash tier units.
MTP is annoying for those who need to sideload maps that Garmin itself does not provide. It's just another step...something I need to download that I haven't had to use in 10 years - AFT. My EE2 will be my last Garmin device (after a dead 830). They surely made enough profit to hire better programmers. We're all just continuously beta testing. They fix one thing, break another. I want accurate grade (it's always wrong now), an easy to manipulate UI, sensors that stay connected, rides that sync and don't require multiple taps and resyncs, a map that's easier to read (they screwed something up recently). The Edges have reached enshittification... trying to push new features to sell more devices yet there are too many damn software problems every time they touch something. Fire whoever is in charge.
It's time for the industry to take a look at incorrect measurements of inclination. There are inclination sensors on the market for measuring inclination. I have no idea why the device manufacturers always try to calculate the inclination using speed and altitude data instead of installing a sensor costing $4 that shows the incline in a fraction of a second.
@@gplamaI still use Basecamp on my Mac and I think it still sees my devices? I use it mainly as a repository or archive of more notable trips / activities. Though I now prefer GPSEditor on the Mac Store to curate planned routes for say a weeks trip. Handy to add waypoints as well, all packaged nicely into a single GPX file to use elsewhere 🙂
I suspect that this allows them to update the underlying file system to something more modern than FAT, to reduce the chance of file corruption when the device inevitably crashes
@@andorsnreminds me of the meme where the last guy gets thrown out of the window for suggesting that Garmin should simply make devices that don't crash.
I'm kinda regretting going edge 840 over karoo 3, icl. I have zero interest in all the garmin ecosystem stuff and I feel like anything I'm doing on my garmin I could also do on a karoo. I was very interested in the karoo bercause of android sideloading, but was scared away by their refusal to release an sdk for datafields
I use the Garmin SDK to decode my ride FIT files for a Windows App I have written. The SDK was compatible with Wahoo's FIT file, but no longer as Garmin has changed the SDK and their FIT file format. I have been writing a FIT decode extraction using Python, fitparse and pyodbc libs. Not fun, but it works with both Garmin and Wahoo fit files. Fitparse has a CL utility to extract the FIT file to json or text file.
Same I got the Edge 840 because of its vastly superior navigation but everything else has been a letdown. So many data fields are either just recreating things that come default on other units or don’t work right or are limited by what the Garmin api provides. I really hope wahoo’s new unit will be a banger.
When are Garmin going to get their software house in order? Shockingly bad and about 20 years behind other devices...why would any user need to access the file system of these devices? Ive always considered that to be a symptom of how bad Garmin Express is...and how bad the Edge unit software is... Its laughable that the last 24.19 update was pushed out to resolve a massive memory leak caused for awful coding quality... Don't get started on the Grade detection....mine was made worse after 24.18... Does anyone know why this is so hard? I previously used a Karoo 2 and it was always spot on...
Totally agree. Instead of updating my older Elemnt Bolt with a newer Roam, I bought a Garmin 540. A friend got a 1040. They are so user-unfriendly and the software is junk. Wahoo is so much easier to use. They have their own problems too but at least they make sense.
Getting away from this back to Zwift why does Zwift do this ==If I drop back on a Zwift race at a certain distance Zwift makes it hard to get back I can put out a load of watts and make no gain on the group though they are putting out the same watts as before. Today the group were putting out about average 130 watts I dropped back and was putting out around 180 watts and made no gain on them this is just unrealistic I have noticed this many times. Why does Zwift do this it must have some algorithm. Don't say it does not happen it can just be my App.
It would be good if these videos could be more concise. I don't need 5 minutes of talking to cover something that could be covered in 1 minute. I ended up losing patience, turning off the video, and going to the Garmin site.

@gplama I have the latest beta firmware and can't find it anywhere. Is this specific to 1050? Did you cover it in any of your older videos?

@gplama Excellent, thank you! I had a brain fart and didn't realize this was an IQ app.
@gplama
I am currently running the 24.19 on my 1040 and when I go to manage maps, I can see my current installed maps.
Still waiting for edge 130 new release
I'd love to see an Edge 140 (or now 150!)
How will this MTP affect us Linux users?
Good question.
Like what type od Sensor?
el campo de pendiente de mi edge 1040 no funciona con la última actualización, me puestra pendiente 1% cuando voy al 20%
Please Garmin give us BIGER cursor!!!
What a bummer. Weird deliberate step backwards for no user benefit.
WIth MTP does it also mean then, that applications like Basecamp become useless!?
Not sure. If you can save/sync files locally then copy them to the device it should be fine.
Yeeha, they fixed the Virtual Partner. If only they would allow us to disable it. I don't care about a Virtual Partner. It's completely useless.
Can't see the user benefit to introducing MTP. Seems like we buy these devices, but don't ever really own them. So it goes.
MEDIA CONTROL!!!! GAME CHANGER!
Short press BELL! Long press BANGERS! 🎵🤘🏼
@gplama still on a 540... But id love a bell at some point!
I don’t think this will affect me, I don’t use a computer. I only sync to my iPhone.
Garmin removing functionality I depend on for every activity. 👎
what did they remove?
I bought an 840 for my first bike computer for a bike packing trip and was shocked at how primitive it is.
WTF can’t they have Garmin Express access the file system instead of this mess?
Nothing changes for Garmin Express, although it will complain if anything is trying to use the MTP device.
How to add climb pro on navigation page?
+1
Some claim it's only on the 1040. I have the 1040, doesn't work there.
It would be good if these videos could be more concise. I don't need 5 minutes of talking to cover something that could be covered in 1 minute. I ended up losing patience, turning off the video, and going to the Garmin site.
Bro, it's a ChangeLog video not a TH-cam Short of the manual video.
I like this video length
I try to add context to what is an otherwise boring arse changelog forum post.
You can read faster than you can listen. Just read the changelog yourself :D
