The BEST Garmin ClimbPro Screen Setup using ConnectIQ EDGE MapFields 🚵♂️

- A much requested feature of ClimbPro is to allow users more customisation options for data fields on the ClimbPro screen. With the data fields locked at two single half-screen fields, the options are limited. Thankfully with the MapFields add-on there's a few ways of making the ClimbPro page a LOT more useful!

Excellent. Now I just need my reading glasses as I ride. I can't wait to try this on my 840. 👍🏻
I know the feeling - I just had my first ride yesterday wearing varifocals - it was revelation - I could see where I was going and also read my Garmin 😂
I had to get sport sunglasses with reader lenses this year. Tifosi makes a few cycling specific reader options. I love them!
@@andrewcollie Yep - get the biggest Garmin device and some bi or varifocals...game-changer. Without them maps are totally useless!
just saw this 2 hours after you uploaded it. Coincidentally I was charging my E530. Immediately added the 2 CiQ apps for my device and have configured it for the map and climbpro page. Thanks! 🙂.
Have you used it? I added today (on my Edge 530) and found the 4 data fields too small to be useful. Also looks like it cuts a bit off? Only have two brief climbs to test on round here.
@@cmarnold78 Yes, used the edge 530 this morning. I had both apps installed and configured on my map screen which presented 4 fields in total. (HR, Power, Grade, elevation). The text is certainly smaller but I can still read it. I did not notice that it cut anything off. It's actually slightly easier to read than the map dashboard app.
@@davidh7414 Worked it out this morning - OK - So for Edge 530 there is a bit more work to get this working not covered in the video. You need to have both Map Fields & Map Fields #2 installed BUT you still need to have 4 fields selected for each one. You have to work out which field appears on the screen. Example if you have Edge Maps on the Left and Edge Maps #2 on the right the fields that will display for Edge Maps are Left Upper Field and Left Lower field. For Edge Maps # it will be Left upper field and Left bottom field that will actually appear. You have to put in different dummy fields for the right upper and lower fields for both. Its a bit confusing so easy to note on paper on a grid to start.
An extra big thumbs up. I have so wanted a more configurable Climbpro and the 2 data fields just wasn't enough. I found it so frustrating I switched the Climbpro pop-up off. I will certainly now go back to using it again given this added functionality. I agree too that Windpro is also a great data field to have. Thanks
Love seeing your love affair with Windfield continue Shane, and i will be putting this setup straight onto my 1040. There's a huge number of fields available via windfield so you can get a really varied config with these two combined.
It's just so damn handy. With the maps on screen too you can see exactly what's going on. I keep looking at my car console/GPS for the wind direction now too. 🤣
@@gplama wait a tic. that would be a great idea for electric cars since headwind/tailwind really changes the range. hmmmm
I never used to leave climb pro on, always going back to my main data setup. But this changes that, I can see what I need to while climbing, then revert back to main data screen when the climb is done. Very useful, thanks for sharing this.
Who else finds climpro a torture instrument? When I am in agony on a climb I rather not know how many Km and what gradient is ahead. Seing the slow progress and the remaining hell ahead just rises my anxiety. I used it for a while and then hid it as a secondary screen. Just dealing with what's ahead of me gives me peace of mind. 😂
Cycling wasn’t meant to be easy. If it was, Garmin would release CouchPro! 😉
Great info! Thank you for your channel. I’m a newbie and your content has been so resourceful.
Been using MapFields / #2 on my 540 for a month or so now. Very handy on those screens where it is fixed to two fields.
Extremely informative and useful as always ✊🏾👊🏾 Thank you 🙏🏾
Super useful, thanks!!
I LOVE your content!
Even 10 years ago, if you had told me I’d have all this at my fingertips, I wouldn’t have believed you. Now I take it for granted. Sometimes there are almost too many options! But I’ll never complain.
Love this stuff!
Thanks, just added this to my climb pro screen, I’ll try it on my next ride
Let me know how it goes. 👌🏼
Thanks for sharing.
great content!
excellent!!! it works well thanks for the tip
Thank you, this is very good. lets see if it works now
Shane, I was confused on the 840 limitation of showing only two fields.
I kept watching the video. I should know better than to think you wouldn't have all the bases covered.
Thanks again for the content.
Awesome & Thanks :)
Amazing. Not sure if this type of video could be done also for Wahoo. Thanks for the content 🎉
Wahoo doesnt need this, because there is much more datafields on bottom of every special page, even on smaller screen! Garmin with its large screens can show all important values but they dont! Garmin is just overrated beacause it has a lot of unnecessary functions, but at same time it cant do few most important functions! Wahoo is much much reliable than Garmin!
Great video, I have just installed the app on my Edge 1030 Plus with easy to follow instructions. I do not seem to be able to get the Windfield app to appear on my map screen as per your video. I will be doing a test run soon to check it out. Thanks Shane.
Now if I could only upgrade my vision.... getting old sucks. ;-)
Not getting old sucks more !

Hi. Question. Do I need to have the Edge Mapfields to make work? I haven’t able to make my ClimbPro works
@@jonethernandez3365 You need to have it downloaded and running as a course on navigation for it to work (for 530) I think on the 540 you don't need to have a route running.
@@cmarnold78 Sorry. Can you explain me how to do that please. I add as screen on my Garmin, but when approaching a climb doesn’t do anything.
@@jonethernandez3365 You need to import a route/course as a .GPX or other (eg in Strava/Kamoot/MapMyRide) into Garmin Connect then send it to your Edge, then start the course.
@@cmarnold78 Thank you. 🙏🏼
Is that the GoPro Max or Insta360?
This ConnectIQ field is amazing! The ingenuity of people simply mind blowing. Garmin should take notice
Edit: I should have finished watching the video before posting 😂
Would be nice to see tips to make something similiar for element bolt 😄
Great video, thanks Shane. Are you able to explain the significance of the black and blue bars that appear beneath the climb profile? Might just be on long climbs
Hey Shane,
thanks for the tips to finally have all the data in view during the climb. Do you know how to set the Edge 1040 to show the route above the gradient line in the Climb Pro data field during navigation? It only does this for me in Free Climb Pro.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks for another really useful video!
Question: what software are you using to create the PIP with your 360 footage?
Final Cut Pro for the video editing/production.
Thank you, I was hoping this might work on my 830 but can’t seem to get it to work 😩, Karoo 3 on its way soon anyway
Great vid BUT how did you get the map to show at the top as my 1040 climb Pro takes up the entire screen? thanks
Incredible Garmin don't let customize climb pro screen as you want. I don't want the map for example in the climb pro screen but I can't erase it. Incredible as poor developing. Maybe I only want know how many meters remain, make this values data fields and I choose the ones I like, Garmin.
That’s the big problem with garmin, nothing is finished, everything is in a half assed „good enough“ state…
@@UloPe Please write it, say it everywhere (im doing it), because Garmin is selling milions of that shitty units and that is only problem why they dont need to be more professional. All reviews are too much positive and dont telling the truth about how big shit Garmin is! - because of that i bought that shit!
@@CrustySVK yeah I’m definitely mentioning it whenever I talk about it.
I do feel I got what I wanted out of the edge compared to the Bolt (namely better/faster navigation) but all the other stuff really is annoying.
Great tip, thank you! Quick question: can you use the ClimbPro feature on the Edge 1040 while doing e.g. a triathlon? My ideal setup would be to just set the Edge 1040 into Extended Display mode, have the .gpx file loaded and guiding me on the bike course, and still see the ClimbPro data. Is this possible?
nice feature, but guess will have to take my reading glasses on tour then for my 840 ...
i never see the the map during climb pro on my 1040. how come?
Maybe you need to have navigation active? But I think I recently had navigation on and map disappeared.
I'd think if you're that concerned with climb performance you'd just bugger off the map for that section? It seems unlikely you'll get lost while pumping your climb segment and it's taking up a massive amount of the screen.
very nice thanks for sharing, just installed.
however I fail to configure my ClimbPro screen on my Edge 840 the way you have it set up at 0:12 on your 840 solar. The only option I have is the layout you have at 3:47. how can I change that?
Hi Shane. Will we be seeing a full review of the iGPSport iGS800 GPS Cycling Computer anytime soon? Looking forward to it. Thanks.
The iGS800 is simply not ready for release. There's so many things wrong with it they needed to spend another six months fixing things before launching. There's some unfixable hardware issues too. The review will be out sometime soon. It's not great.
@@gplama Ok... Thanks Shane! Appreciate the reply.
I like the ud
Another really useful video but the ConnectIQ apps on my 1030 Plus crash on pretty much every ride now so I probably won't bother.
Try removing all IQapps en test one by one. You probably have an app that crashes all the IQapps, this way you can identify which one causes the crash.
brill
I'm still using my trusty 1030. I don't see an option in the ride profiles to keep ClimbPro active (keep screen on head unit) while on the climb. I get the ClimbPro screen, but it keeps scrolling through my other screens. I've been tempted to pull the trigger on a 1040 and keep telling myself it will have better features, but the cheapskate in me wants to wait for the 1050!
I am finding that as I get older smaller print is not a good thing! I would need a really BIG screen to add all those data fields and still be able to read them! Cool feature though.
Quite a lot of Garmin Edge 1040 content this month. Sounds to me like it is being compared to something very similar.
Love the jersey - are you selling Llama merch?
Cheers! Not at this time. Maybe one day.
@@gplama revenue stream untapped there...
Hi Shane, do you know of anyway (on an Edge Explore2) to increase the size of blue location arrow and the history line on the map? I just find them too small, regards from Italy (escaping Ballarat’s winter) !
There’s a file hack to change the position triangle. Not sure about the line thickness though. I’ll dig more into this when I get the chance.
Hello, is it possible to place the information in the middle of the larger screen in ClimbPro?
Thank you
Hi sir what can you say about magene qed power meter? Is it lighter too? Thanks
I've got the Edge Explore 2, how do you set ClimbPro to have the map at the top of the screen?
Same question here.
How are you showing map / route on top, is that because you "came" from the map screen, when the climb started ?
same question here
How do you do to put the map at the top (and remove dist to go and ascend remain)
I have a question, on the edge 840 will it only show 2 fields or 4 as you show in image 4:12?
I can get the screen with the map, climbpro and the data fields while riding without following a course. If I ride on a course, I cannot get the combined screen, I only get the map and the data fields. Am I missing a setup somewhere? I could not find this information watching the video many times.
Is there a way to display both climb pro and map fields at the same time on my edge 530 ? I cannot find the option in the settings.
Possibly only an option on the larger 1040 units.
@@gplama i was about to ask the same question, but i own a 1030 plus, and i cant find that. And it buggers me when climb pro takes over before a crossroad and i did not see which way i gotta go.
I like the look of this data screen, but I can't figure out how to change mine on 1040 to show a map and that style elevation profile... Only the bottom 2 fields are editable, the top 2 are seemingly stuck on the large "are we there yet" field, and a large elevation profile that shows no other data.
Same here on my Edge 1040 Solar. At the top, he has the navigation map, but I don't. I have a huge Distance To Go and Ascension Remaining which takes up far too much valuable space. How do you get these replace by the navigation map ?
OK, so people in other comments are saying the map will only appear in free ride, not if you are following a course. Weird logic.
@@ugomarsolais Agreed. Bizarre..
Thanks Shane, very informative.
However, when i go through the rpocess i always get a repeat of the same data on the left and right.....or a singe data fieldc on one side and 2 on the other....any thoughts form anyone???
Hmm... Might be one for the developer to answer. I'm not sure.
What camera are you using for your ride in this video
Insta360 X4
Thanks Shane. How did you get the map on the climb pro screen please?
Looks like that might only be a 1040 thing.
On my 1040 the map is also missing on the climb pro screen. Anyone know how to activate this?
@@gplama on the 840 the map is shown in freeride, but not when using a route.
@@ddxleoncuprar @gplama seems to be using a route with ClimbPro and map both visible (see 5:50 for example)
@@gplama On my 1040, I don't have the map on climb pro page. beta firmware.
Got a 840 but as I need reading glasses I struggle to follow the thin blue line on my map/route can I make the line thicker or easier to see. Thanks
That's why I didn't risk and went straight into 1040... BTW: 4x fields setup is too small for my age, even on 1040 😞😞
How do I keep the map during climb pro? It dissapears during a climb and just shows elevation and those 2 data fields. My unit is Explore 2.
You’ll need a 1040 with more screen realestate.
@@gplama my map disappear even on the 1040 when I have selected and riding a course. Is there a workaround? Sometimes it happens that our group are leaving the course in Front of a Climb without knowing because we loose Information about the track when climb pro pops up
Same issues, on climb pro screen, you just have "distance to go" and "ascent demain"
Hey, how can I setup that I will see map during climbing in climb pro? I have 540 and Im not able to set it up.. Thanks!
Can you get wind info on wahoo roam v2?
How can I put the map on the climb pro screen? Mine is exactly like the one on the 3:08 screen shown.
Ok, I got the four small fields set up. But, how do you get the route map to show above the climb profile? I can't seem to change the Climb Pro current upper display of Dist to Go, Asc. Remain and Grade Remain.
Apparently it only does this for ClimbPro in free riding on the 1040. Something thy should add to ClimbPro when following a route too, imo.
@@gplama Ah, I have a 840 Solar. Sometimes I miss a route turn because Climb Pro jumped up. I thought you might have had another app running to get the map display above the climb profile. Thank you for all the great videos.
Hi is there an app that will connect your Garmin Explore 2 to you Di2 system? Bike is set up to connect to my previous head unit 520 edge
One for Garmin Support. I don't believe the Edge Explore 2 can connect to Di2 ANT like other Edge units.
how do i get rid of the map and replace it with the dist to go and asc remaining fileds?
Using 1040, how do I change the specific data fields? Mine currently has speed, cadence, Ascent and HR. Shane’s had 3s Pwr. Thanks for sharing.
2:07 Garmin Connect IQ App, go to the settings for the data field and tap each field ex. Upper right/left, etc. It gives you the option to replace each one
@@gordonconrod7628 Thank you - most helpful.
Why do we need a map on screen at all. Just want the climb part and the bottom part.
I personally think that’s really useful. Quite often on a climb there is a turn and when on an effort simple mind often forgets the turn 😊
As someone who races, it really helps to know exactly what turn’s coming up so I can position myself properly and stay safe too 👍🏻
Or... why i cant just choose what I want on that screen?
Because I have a nice big 1040 screen to fill up
Often there is a fork in the road and you can easily go stright instead of turning or vice versa and deviate from the climb/route/segment
not sure, what I do wrong, but my ClimbPro screen looks always like at minute 3:14 in video. I never so any map on top.
same here, how to add it?
Strange I have the latest firmware on a 1040. But I can’t change data fields in climbpro 😢
So does free ride for climb pro work on a 1030 edge +? My standard climb pro comes up if I scroll through the pages, it doesn’t come up automatically but map fields doesn’t come up at all?
No. It’s an x40 series only feature for free riding.
@@gplama awesome, thanks Shane for replying. Keep up the great videos 👌
Just tried this on my 530. You get 4 data fields on each side.
which 2 fields (of the 4 you can configure) are shown on the smaller devices?
The two left fields.
@@gplama thank you!
Hey GP how can I turn this off as it comes up during my rides constantly and is annoying I suppose my climb pro is set to auto?
Just switch it to off in the profile setup.
Thanks!
Where does it get the information about the wind? It is accurate?
See the link in the video description for all the details about WindField.
Is there a way to mount the insta 360 that is at least moderately "aero"? :)
If you're worried that much about aero/performance/speed, leave the cameras at home.
@@gplama haha, fair enough. Guess I was wondering actually how do you mount it at all? Without it bothering you?
I used a selfie stick mounted to the bars. It’s not ideal and only there for making videos like this. The under-side mount on the computer mount is much better for everyday riding.
don't you find the wind direction points all over the place?
it really shouldn't. the data is coming from the stations near your location so as long as they are accurate, the arrow shouldn't jump around
@@windfieldapp i think its the bike computer not having a consistent view of North rather than the 3rd party data )mpt your datafield, I use a different one)
And what happened with iGSPORT 800, review ???
Still in progress. As I've replied to someone else here already tonight - The iGS800 is simply not ready for release. There's so many things wrong with it they needed to spend another six months fixing things before launching. There's some unfixable hardware issues too. The review will be out sometime soon. I’m annoyed that ClimbPro doesn’t work in free ride on Edge 830… Why do I need a new device for that? 🤦♂️
Does anyone know what Edge Mapfields #3 is? I get #1 is the main for 1040 and #2 is for 540/840, but #3…?
Anyone wanting to use three of these fields on one page.
Wish Garmin would do something for the aged/bifocal people where the tiny letters are so difficult to read
Sometimes I think UI designers at Garmin never rode their units outside; just seeing it on CIQ simulator sitting in their offices in Bangalore 😞The UI/UX is sooooo bad, especially in Workout screens - too small font even though a lot of not used space (=wasted space)
@@Jarek. EXACTLY MY WORDS! And fonts are terrible too - I wouldn't be surprised at all if they started using italics/cursive font. Garmin logic is, why do things right and simple when you don't have to. UI is just pain to use, its chaotic and after a 1year experience im still not to used to it because probably its not possible, especially when one screen use cross in bottom right to exit another use touch on middle of the screen to exit and another is using arrow on top left corner to exit - i think they should fire that designer with severe schizophrenia.
It is great that we have those custom field apps, but is it possible to disable this stupid "Climb starting" countdown? It drives me nuts that I can't see my power anymore unless I tap on this. And then this useless "Climb!" green box that appears for too long as well. What are those for, for people that want to measure their climb performance progression on local climbs or what?
I can’t even see the original fields let alone 4 fields
Can these climb apps run off a tablet? You could mount an ipad on the bars to have more real estate to see more data.
Please don’t do that.
I would slap a Macbook Pro on the bars.
You only get 2-4 data fields on your climbing screen? Wahoo blows that out of the water.
What annoys me about the wahoo climbing screen is that a lot of the screen is taken up by elapsed time which I find of no use.
Hills never get easier, you just get faster.
How is it useful to have anything displayed in such small characters on that screen? Who can actually make any of that out while pedaling? 😒
Works for me. The data shown is bigger than MapDashboard which a lot of people happily use.
I can see it clearly on my 1040 and i have a poor vision so… 💁🏻
I'm a middle aged man and can still read all the data on my Edge 1030.
Just tried it on my 1040 but on my unit the datafiels looks horrible. Very blurry around the edges of the numbers and letters.
