I totally agree, Garmin should just make it easier to copy and backup your data screens. Recreating everything is a pain. Also would be great to be able to manage the data screen via the smartphone app, instead of depending 100% on the Garmin Edge UI which is pretty bad.
All these settings should be Cloud-resident and available on multiple platforms, transferrable and, as Ray mentioned, easily duplicated via "template." I spoke to Garmin about this; the operator said that it's in the works. In the meantime, other headunit manufacturers offer this feature. Waiting, Garmin, we're waiting...
You can backup activity profiles and other stuff: support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=eWswdSH4aC3xrXxmQj7U9A. I know this method isn't exactly what you asked for, but it's better than nothing...
Running: elapsed time, pace, distance Cycling: elapsed time, speed, distance, cadence, power (3 sec avg), di2 gears (handy to know which sprocket the chain is on without looking down inbetween your legs, especially at night). In my opinion cadence and power are more important than speed. When I was younger, aka much faster, I would put my running watch onto virtual partner to run a 10k within a certain time.
Your template idea is fabulous. It’s exactly what scientific journals do when they provide their required bibliographic reference styles. Talk to Garmin about this!
Exactly! Garmin Activity Templates that we can save and even share. ... Hehe, almost identical metrics on my devices. Although bike speed is basically useless info for my training.
I use the same setup for my watches- one screen for lap metrics and the other for total run metrics. The only difference is that I switched from HR training to Power training, so I have the 3s power instead of current HR.
i agree fully to your introduction about datafields templates etc.. Yes there often so many things, i have the feeling garmin developers never using the own devices. f.e. the calorie alert '100 cal' on Garmin 530 does not show the consumed total of calories at this time the alert ocurs, which would be more valuable as the 100cal info isolated. Or there are coming notices f.e. 'battery low gear shift' or battery heart rate low. They are overseen in most cases. Why are these messages are not stored in the activity summary? Would make life really easier and helpful. But indeed i use garmin now since the etrex vista times and watch in some areas there are nearly ZERO development.
On my cycling race screen I always have the time of day so I can pay attention to my pre-race routine. Other than that I only care about total distance ridden so I can gauge my effort.
I am SO confused about data fields! I "installed" several that show up on the phone app, but WHERE are they on the watch? HOW do I sync what I "installed" to my watch?? Please help a newbie?
Hi Ray, everyone, for the Fenix 5 Plus series I’m struggling to configure the maps view to show turn by turn instructions when running. Any idea how to do this please would be highly appreciated!
What real gets me is Garmin 520 plus does not send its gradient to Garmin connect I live in a hilly place and like to see the gradient not just a graph of the climbs on the ride The old Garmin set up showed the grade % and the power you were putting out at that point which was great to know and compare with other rides for that climb. Now I can't get that
Q! Sometimes synched activities from my garmin 130 does not translate (as training effect, recovery time, etc) on my (also synched) FR935. BOTH synchrd through gatmin app... (Afrer a 4hr bike ride yesterday, my 935 showed 0 recovery time.... Although it was on shown on the watch as an activity, the recovery and training effect was absent....) Any ideas? Thanks!!!!!
Ray, speaking about Garmin on whether they will create an "Activity Profile" for you to sync on all devices rather than having to enter them manually on each, you'll never know that could happen as the CES 2019 is just a couple of weeks away :P Steven ~ Cheers from Malaysia
Very similar to my 935 setup. However.. I don't have the time as you can shortcut to this easily enough, and have cadence alongside hr on my version of the 'I don't care about pace or distance' screen.
Close to my setup. Screen 1: Distance, Avg Pace, HR, Cadence. Screen 2: Time of day, sunrise, sunset. All other screens are off, as I'd rather not be scrolling through multiple screens while on the run.
It seems most (if not all) features from the 530 are already available on the watch (fenix series). I do not get why a bike computer is useful if the watch can be placed on the bike and have most of all the features. Am I missing something?
This comment could go in many of the reviews you make, but do you ever suspect these companies are purposefully leaving out features in order to guarantee future relevance? I hate to be a cynic, but at what point do you call someone out of this?
I've been asking for this for a while. I'm pretty sure this isn't a case of a feature they want to implement as an upsell, but honestly just a case of them not having enough/right IT resources to figure it out. At least, that's the feeling I get.
@@Dcrainmaker I have the 735xt but I'm looking for a dedicated cycling computer. I realized as I have also the Varia, I only could use it with the 520. But does the 520 receive Whats App notifications? I have read that you can only receive text messages, but no whatsapp? 🤷♂
Slightly off the subject Ray. Can a. Sports watch say a Garmn 935 for example transmit heart rate and be used instead of a heart rate strap in Zwift or by an Edge 1030? Or do they only display the heart rate on the watch. Merry Christmas and please continue the great videos in 2019.
Yup! Just use the HR re-broadcasting option. It transmits it via ANT+, not Bluetooth Smart. So that might slightly limit your options on Zwift (but the Edge 1030 can also easily pick it up. Dive into the sensors menu, and then you'll see the optical HR sensor. Within that you can choose to have it automatically enable broadcasting when you start an activity. Alternatively, you can one-off enable it so that it doesn't record an activity but just broadcasts the HR (I don't recommend that option because it's easy to escape out of it without realizing it).
Lindsay Cripps You can use your Apple Watch for broadcasting heart rate to Zwift. You need to download the Zwift app to your watch and then connect it as the heart rate sensor. You can also use the Apple Watch as cadence for running on Zwift - no need for a foot pod.
Is it worth investing in a cycle head unit of I already have a garmin 235 heart rate monitor,? I have it synced to the phone and get lap, heart rate prompts every 3k. Also have a bluetooth cadence sensor on the bike
Thanks DC. I suppose I'll stick with the watch. Audio prompts every 3km are fine for now. Visual navigation would be useful as google maps audio, usually prompts too late to manouevre gor lane changes in traffic. That said, head units dont seem quite good enough with navigation either
Useful. As a long time subscriber I so wish you'd speak a bit slower in your vids. I often miss stuff when you are explaining something. I used to go back or pause and rewind but I can't be bothered any more.
I found this video difficult to watch. I could never accept having a metric on different pages in a different spot each time. How can you live with yourself!
So to be clear, Ray, you know that Chris Froome deliberately cheated and should have been disqualified from the Vuelta, Giro and Tour since the adverse analytical finding? I am not expressing an opinion either way as I don't have the knowledge.
Roger Collingwood Absolutely. Just as any other rider that popped has with the same levels he did. That’s the way the system works. It’s an athletes responsibility per WADA to know what goes in their body. No different than Contador or others that have claimed they ingested something that was tainted. At least in cases of unknowingly tainted substances the athlete supposedly didn’t know. In Froome’s case he claimed he didn’t mean to go over the limit.

Good insight. I so wish Garmin would have a Lap Ascent option. The Total Ascent isn't particularly useful on a multi-family day

Rolling pace can easily done with the AppBuilder 5, then added as a datafield.
