    They’re shocked at something that is common knowledge in Latin America. It’s only the Latinos who are born and raised in the US that are this painfully ignorant of their own roots. Which is so ironic considering how obsessed they are with race, ethnicity, and identity.

    • @hwgray
      @hwgray 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "never into the nuances of their 70% European heritage" Why would they bother? There are, after all, millions of books in thousands of libraries that will tell you more than you want to know about how great Europe and its white people are. Europe is the default case. About the only thing that the average American knows about Africa is that it's where Europeans in the Americas had to get their slaves from, after European diseases and hard labor killed the Indian slaves.
      "that could be English, Gaelic, German, Scandinavian, Spanish, Polish all very different cultural backgrounds that could be interesting to look at." So "very different" that they all speak variants of a single language: the European variant of the Porto-Indo-European language. Africa, OTOH, is a single group of people speaking a single language, in your opinion, that no one gives a shit about.

There is nothing wrong with being happy that you are tall or good looking. I'm happy I was born tall and healthy and I could be better for sure, but still. I think it's okay to be happy about such things. And I mean happy - not boastful.

      23andMe (the test these people took) has a section called “recent American ancestry” in which they identify, by genetic markers, populations from several specific regions in the Americas. It includes: Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and several other Caribbean regions. The Brazil section is even divided into subcategories of different regions of Brazil. What is the significance of this? It means that in those regions at least, there is enough genetic homogeneity over a long enough time to identify the population as distinct. This means, from a genetic standpoint, these are now identifiable genetic populations. If your ancestry is 100% “recent American ancestry” from Puerto Rico, it is perfectly accurate to say you’re “100% Puerto Rican”.

    the fact that these people think there can be "100% mexican" or "100% puerto rico" given the recency of the migrations/colonization is indicitive of a lack of historical knowledge.
    The reason people can say that dna is 'from' a particular region is a family or group staying in one area for hundreds of years, or migrating together (like the anglo saxons in england or other germanics in non-scandinavian continental europe). It is honestly astounding just how many people I have come across alone *[on social media/the internet]* who genuinely think/believe that you “can't be racist toward white people” or “white people don't experience racism.”
    It was not too long ago that I came across numerous people in the comment section of some video making ignorant, logically fallacious, and nonsensical claims, such as, “You can't be racist towards white people. You can be prejudiced towards white people, though.”
    The definition of racism states “prejudice against…” at the very beginning of it *[along with a couple of other words as examples such as “discrimination” and “antagonism.”],* lol.
    What's even more baffling and frustrating is how these same people consider themselves as people who “stand against racism” while simultaneously disregarding and acting wilfully ignorant of not only racism toward white people, in general, but the racism *they* engage in toward white people themselves-it is *wild.*

    I 've never Don's a DNA test (due to they will sell your DNA to 3rd parties); however, I have, and still am, working on my family's genealogy. My family's genealogy has gone to most of Europe (mostly Scottish & English), but it also has gone (so far) to Northern Africa and the Middle East. There may be some Native American, but it is very difficult to prove. Native Americans, generally in the NE tribes, trace their genealogy through the maternal line. Plus, there was a point where Native Americans, who married into a white family or grew up in a "English" school, would take an "English" name. So, unless proof presents itself, I have to keep it as a family story.

    Oh Aba, you sweet, summer child. That's where you're wrong. They are worried, because they are the type of people who judge others because of what their ancestors did. If it turns out their own bloodline isn't pure, then they could be subjected to the same hate they throw. That wouldn't be good. They could be destroyed by their own mob.

    just to clarify for people: these "results" aren't some hard coded definites. They are population/correlation based and those companies go "hey, we see these genes in France, so we'll call these 'French genes', so anyone that has these will be 'part french'". There are a LOT of assumptions these companies make, and because one fails to see a specific ethnicity in their histories or sees one does NOT actually mean that their family history is wrong.

      @jackmclane1826 they don't look back in history, they extrapolate how similar todays DNA of a region is to yours (and the confidence intervals are often pretty... generous). So these tests really only tell how often your DNA is present in a population of a certain region nowadays - major movements or redefinition of country borders, especially over the centuries, are not factored into these specific tests.

      Well the big thing about this as well is that you could say have a grandparent whose parents say emigrated from say Spain or France, but moved to Italy and raised the grandparent. The grandparent was raised fully in Italian culture and then comes thru Ellis island to USA. Tow generations later you take a DNA test knowing thinking that your heritage is Italian because obviously your grandparents are “italian”. But the test will show “Spanish” which even though doesn’t necessarily tell you everything because of the same reason you thought you would come up Italian. The whole genetic history thing is kind of a crapshoot that doesn’t mean a whole ton.
      I’m not saying there aren’t definitely genetically distinct racial profiles but I think in the modern era it’s very muddy waters

    I've never met a happy person who defines their persona by their skin color. Folks like that always seem to be angry and miserable. But virtually every person I have met who has a strong connection with their culture is pretty happy and fun to be around. If that's an indicator of a broader reality, it seems like culture matters more than color.

      I’ve come across people like this. A lot of them are not happy. They are typically on some kind of anti depressant (not knocking that. If it helps them then go for it, but there’s definitely a theme) and they’re in therapy. And the way you know about this is because they’re often not shy about it to the point where they seem weirdly proud to have a mental illness.
      When it comes to their culture, I reckon, for a lot of them, their interest in it is fairly recent when it became more popular to read out your stats. I guarantee when they were kids, they wanted to hang out with their friends and do whatever was cool at the time (that likely had nothing to do with their culture), but their parents would drag them kicking and screaming to cultural events with the rest of the family. Now they’re going to pretend as if they were always interested in their roots.

    As a Puerto Rican, most of us are like 70% European that’s like the average. It’s funny bc if you’re from the island a lot of them don’t like being black and many will refuse to admit they are black but they love being white whereas in the states it’s the opposite. I’m personally half European 1/4 Congo and 1/5 native Taino then a little bit of like Hawaiian in there and I’m darker than most of my family as effectively a lightskin. My sister and I have faced harassment from older family members for being darker. On the other hand many people born in the states love our complexion and it feels almost fetishized at times also people don’t know whether to consider us black or white or what because we are very dark in the summer but much lighter in the winter but we always get boxed in as you’re either black or you’re white or you’re Mexican but people don’t realize the Caribbean is very different from central and South America in many ways. It feels to me people all want to just put labels on everything but don’t want to take the time to understand what they are labeling

    • @AnimaVox_
      @AnimaVox_ 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      My family's from the Caribbean too and we're also mostly European, namely, from Spain and France. Have a decent amount of African (lot of aunts and cousins who look from the south of Africa, like Mandela), but some of us couldn't pass as black if we tried (myself included); and maybe even an Asian ancestor somewhere in there. Zero Native American, since they were entirely wiped out in Cuba. Color has never really mattered among my relatives. Some people in Latin America are still flat-out racist, but I'd say most people don't care about stuff like that-or at least not very much in Cuba.
      People need to realize that demographics differ from country to country, and that includes Latin American ones. Some are going to have more black, white, or indigenous people living there, other countries might have more of a mixture. Cuba had a minority Asian population that immigrated there and assimilated into the larger populace. It varies.

      @@AnimaVox_ in pr it’s funny because for the most part they really don’t care about race. Everyone is just Puerto Rican. Everyone is family. The whole issue stems from when the colonists separated the white people from Europe and the natives/africans and created that social hierarchy based on race that still lingers in the minds of older generations. Many young people really don’t see the concept of racism on the island because for the most part your favorite cousin could be black but your brother is white so it really doesn’t matter. I do think the concept is dying off in pr however the divide between people from the island and people from the states might reignite that. Many in the states grew up so focused on racial identity that they always try to put a label on Puerto Rico but the islanders only want to refer to themselves as Puerto Rican not black or white or anything else so it’s an interesting dichotomy

    Like, bro, European nations have rich histories, cultures, stories, literature, the whole thing. I don't know why people have to make out being descended from them a bad thing. On top of that, aside from attempting to speak with some fake adopted accent when saying place names in English and maybe speaking some heritage language at home, they probably know little to nothing about the cultures they so desperately want to be a part of.
    This reminds me of a Latina I met at my university who used the English pronunciation of her name when introducing herself to me, which was great, but then her friends lambasted her for not pronouncing it as it would be said in Spanish. It's this sort of tribalism that leads ultimately to social decay.

    I have always found it so fascinating how much stoke people put into race. I am African(black if you were wondering 😂). I have met people from all sorts of races and not liked or disliked them based off races. If i was half anything else i wouldn't care.
    When people tell me that i should be more attached to black people and act as a representative i hate it. I don't consider black people to be my people, in the sense that our skin tone doesn't automatically mean we are the same. My people are those i have bonded with, fight with, suffered with and enjoyed life with.
    But the idea that race is supposed to be that important is shocking to me because, you may have disagreements or morals to those in your own race, so that kind of group thinking is just dumb to me.
    Maybe i am missing something, if you think race is supper important i would love to hear you perspective.

      In the U.S black people self-identified by our skin color because it was forced on us by the dominant society. Laws were also created around this forced identity which prevented us from obtaining the same rights and privileges as our white counterparts. After a couple hundred years of this we eventually began to see ourselves as a collective instead of just an individuals because thats how we were always viewed and treated as. This is why if someone goes against the "collective" they are often viewed as a "sellout" or a "traitor" for better or worse. Not sure if this will help give insight but I appreciate you asking to hear other people opinions

      Essentially, everybody has tribalistic tendencies, aka they want to be a part of the superior group. Sometimes that means you're racist, sometimes that means you join a gang, but usually that means you appreciate your friends/family.
      The type of people who believe that their own race is the superior tribe will always try to convince others of that race to start acting in a way that benefits the tribe. But just because others chose to join the wrong group doesn't mean they can bring you down or indoctrinate you. That's my thoughts, anyway. Have a nice day.
