My 94 yo mom in law cooked them “to death”. Almost black & the best. She used old pressure cookers & beat up aluminum pans. Made the best Chocolate Pound Cake & Strawberry Cobbler ever.
She would be 106 now. Picked cotton for neighbors, made butter, never had A/C. Never moved from her home place. Whole ‘nother world.

My mother added sugar to nearly all her vegetables especially corn because it made them taste like they were fresh out of the garden. She also froze okra by picking it, putting it in freezer bags without cutting or even washing it. She would freeze and then that winter she would wash it in warm water, cut it , roll it in corn meal and fry it. It tasted like it was fresh from the garden, too.

Tammy, who got time for that, I say that jokingly😂‼️
Because I drain my green beans a little ,instead of waiting for all that liquid to boiled down. I follow the recipe some what. I put the sugar in but instead of oil I use butter and also add salt and pepper and onions . The sugar makes the difference ‼️👍🏾

I’m telling y’all, for anyone who likes country style green beans, you need to try this method at least once. They are some of the best green beans you will ever eat. They taste like they’ve been cooked with country bacon or something. But you have to follow her directions and cook them exactly like she says. They are absolutely delicious!

Love your green beans. A little tip,...anything that's made of stainless steel can be easily cleaned with oven cleaner. Just take the pot out of doors and spray it and forget it for
a while. In most cases, you won't have to scrub or scour, maybe a once over with a scrouring pad. The same is true for Corning ware. Burnt on casserole will lift off after
a soak in oven cleaner. No use wearing yourself out. LOL....Gary Schneider Alameda, California

My German grandmother would cook them according to the meal. Sometimes just fresh green beans lightly cooked with a bit of butter and dill. Sometimes cooked down like this with a little bacon, onion and sweet vinegar. The beans were always from her garden. I preferred the yellow wax beans because as a child I thought the green beans were "furry". Grandma grew both.

Tammy - I had to watch how you made these beans, because I make mine very much the same way. It is almost the same recipe, except I also add a pat or two of butter, and mix cooked bacon pieces into them when they're thru cooking. I even mash mine, but with fork. and yes - they are, like yours, delicious! Every good cook adds about a tablespoon of sugar the water of boiled corn on the cob, skillet fried squash (not battered), and even to spaghetti sauce. Sugar brings out the flavor of so many foods. I love your recipes.

Diabetics and dieters: I tried this using a granulated monk fruit blend instead of sugar. It created the same glaze they are talking about and tasted fine at the time, but later I had a slight, sickly-sweet aftertaste for a while. Even though the Splenda monk fruit blend I used is usually measure-equivalent with sugar, if I try this again I'll use a bit less of the monk fruit.

These look delicious Tammy. I've always used maple syrup instead of sugar. I would stir them to pieces as they were popping and sizzling. My sister, who never liked green beans loves the way I cook them. You're right one has to cook them all the way down for the flavor to be delicious. Gotta have that sizzle and pop at the end. As mine were doing that ,that's when I'd stir mine to pieces.Thank you Tammy
