  • Upon more recent re-watches of Scream 4, it has fluctuated in my rankings. Especially more so since the release of Scream (2022) and Scream VI. Before I re-watched the movie, it's placement was somewhere down the list in my rankings. Today I decided to re-assess the movie and ultimately decided this movie is completely misunderstood by fans of the franchise.

Sydney was in hiding in Scream 3. In Scream 4 she is a author who not only opened up about her trauma she has used what she has learned to help others. And the dynamics with her and Gale are completely different. I think that is tremendous character development/progression.

  • @kingkaiiius

Jill is arguably the best killer. It’s all about context - Sidney running to the front door to check if her cousin is okay to then be stabbed by ghost face, taken back and then the mask is revealed to be…her cousin JILL. Then She explains her motive for fame due to jealously and wanting to escape the mundane existence that is everyday life, etc. The final 25 minutes of the movie is my favourite final act of any Scream movie.
Scream 4 isn’t my favourite, nor does it rank high on my personal list (maybe somewhere in the middle), but I do see it’s greatness along with some weaknesses.

Scream 4 is my second favourite after the original. Gale is awesome and has so many great one liners. Sidney is the bad ass, ready to fight final girl we know and love her for being... in Scream 5 she did not have the same physical prowess or fighting skill we have seen her display in every other installment before. Kirby was FLAWLESS. Oliva's Death Scene was probably the most brutal of the series. Jill was a totally unexpected and bat-sh*t cray killer. Last but not least.... can we talk about Rebecca Walters?!? Played by Alison Brie (GLOW, Lego Movie) she goes toe to toe with Gale and is just as fierce and feisty - quite possibly the most underrated minor character in the series. The older films ALL did this so much better... Kenny, Joel, Sarah and Jennifer - are all great examples of minor characters who were perfectly cast, hilariously funny and unforgettable. Whereas in Scream 5 and Scream 6... none of the side characters are memorable at all. Don't get me wrong, I love the two new films but they are too obsessed with their Core Four and the other characters get neglected as a result.

We were expecting her to be the new final girl and I really believed her that the mastermind could be Trevor with sidekick either Charlie or Randy until their reveal. Most of the ghosface reveals in Scream franchise were to be fair not very surprising except Mrs Loomis and Roman who we thought were some absolute minor characters until the end, so it was not the same shock as when they introduced someone as a main hero to make her main villain.

The only reason why she didn't kill Dewey, Gale or Sidney is mostly because of their plot armor but also because murdering Dewey and Gale would not have that much effect. Sure she could had shot Sidney, but again, plot armor excuse. She had already done so much, had she killed one and any of the legacy character's, she'd be unstoppable. Some people say Amber was awesome because she had managed to do these killings, but even though Amber killed a Legacy and a Returning character, she lacked motive, she lacked charisma, she lacked an effective plan (No one would believe Sam was doing all of that), she didn't kill all of her friends like Jill did and Amber was the secondary killer, because Richie was the main one, and Richie was a coward, let alone a very boring character, but is also mostly praised because his actor was in a popular TV Show, even though he is just a nepo baby and doesn't have the same level of talent his parents have.
I find it so pathetically dumb how the new Killers don't have a propper plan to escape like Jill, Mrs. Loomis and Billy did, or the fact that they don't seem to have their own distinguished personalities. By the time we see Billy and Loomis, Mrs. Loomis and Mickey or Jill and Charlie, we can see how different each one of them are with their partners. For fuck's sake, Mickey was acting like a goose, mocking Sidney around up until he got shot by Mrs. Loomis, and Jill had her motives because "What the media truly likes is a sole survivor"... The new killers mostly kill other characters and extra characters for fun, and trying to blame their deaths on Sam is just so damn bad. She is never even there when their victims die or they don't have any relation with her whatsoever, so why whould she kill these extras???

@@ayascamdzic3827 Even though in Scream 4 the plot says Stab Movies 4 - 7 didn't have Sidney's story in real life, it still had her character in them, mentioned in Scream 5 that she was in every installment. And I did not say people in the movie said Stab 8 was bad because Judy, the character, was in it. But she was in it regardless, and the movie is treated it as the inferior sequel ever. This also has to do with the fact that Scream 4 was considered, for many years, the inferior sequel because of Low Box Office (solely for that really) and because the whole aspect regarding Scream 4 being a remake of the original (something that the requel did much worse). In any way, Stab 8 still came after the events of Scream 4 happened, being considered the most relatively close to it - even if the story in the plot is not that related to the real events of Scream 4.
And like you said it yourself: Judy was there, and because of that, Wes Hicks shouldn't be worried because "his mother was in the inferior sequel", and Judy Hicks was the character in Scream 4, the considered "inferior sequel".

Can argue that the series should have stopped after 3 and that's fair, but if 4 had to happen and tackle the idea of remakes without actually remaking the original, it went about it in an excellent way.

  • @khalilaraj3971
    @khalilaraj3971 ปีที่แล้ว +3

A lot of people don’t understand what is the main idea of the 4th which is not a direct sequel or a reboot, it is meant to be the “Failed new ending ” and no that is not a jab cuz 4 is my favorite.
Meaning Jill wanted to rewrite the ending and she was supposed to be the star of the story, she was almost gonna get away with it, without Sidney being alive or any of the new cast.
With the 4th no one was supposed to survive from the young cast cuz Jill didn’t want it to be a reboot with new survivors like Sidney, Gale and Dewey, it’s supposed to be just her and 2 of the legacy characters that will carry on the torch making Jill the new final girl and ending it there, meaning making her become the Sidney people will talk about and not a reboot final girl, that’s how smart she is.
Instead of making a direct sequel to Sidney’s story or a reboot, she wanted Sidney’s story to be about her by writing a different ending to Sidney’s story with her being in the ending and not Sidney, hence taking over the whole story.
But she failed and a couple of the new cast survived making the 4th movie not a reboot cuz the story wasn’t supposed to continue with these characters being the main ones nor a sequel and that’s why u don’t see a lot development in the old characters arc and it on purpose didn’t add anything to the original trilogy story cuz it wasn’t supposed to and by that Jill’s plan to have her new ending failed hence making it the “failed new ending ”.
So in conclusion the 4th is a side story about Jill trying to rewrite the ending and taking over Sidney’s persona which I really hoped that she was successful with cuz I loveeee her 💚

Have you ever noticed how weirdly comedic this movie feels at times? Not like Scream 3, Scream 3 is a straight up comedy, and not like Screams 1 and 2, which balanced comedy and horror better, I mean comedic while the horror is happening. There's like a tonal dissonance in it that almost makes it feel like a cartoon show. I think that's completely intentional, alongside the gross looking glossy filter and the dumb score, as a pun on remakes. A cheap remake just cheapens the content that is borrowing from the original, so a movie about an in-universe remake NEEDS to feel a little bit like Stab.
They also play with the theme of desensitization throughout (the previous generation's tragedy is the next one's joke), expertly portrayed particularly in a very underrated opening in which the audience is made to feel bored by two real murders after seeing three fictional ones because the unexpected is the new cliché, and after two fucking stupid Stab sequences you don't get the Drew Barrymore level shit you're expecting, no, you get a third one that is probably even worse. That, following the movie's logic, is subversion in and of itself. The opening kill is the blandest in the movie, and Stab and reality merge.
All of this combined completely removes the audience from the action, and it all feels very surreal and alienating, just like Sidney, who seems on drugs until the hospital scene. Then they also take the numbness you're feeling and they pretty much give it to the killer as their motivation. Jill is putting you to sleep throughout the movie with how uninteresting she is, and then she reveals herself and she shows you her numbness, how much of a cartoon everything is for her. Even Jenny, during the fucking opening, goes: "Well, at least Woodsboro is known for something...". I don't know, either the movie is too clever or I'm absolutely crazy.
It's hilarious to me how anti-remake the whole thing is. Not becuse it's super original or anything, no, it's sticking to the recycling philosophy to a T, but instead of copying, it subverts. Everything is the same, but the values are completely inverted (New Tatum dies first, new Gale dies, new bad Randy is Randy+Stu, new good Randy 1 is Randy+Tatum, new good Randy 2 is Randy+Kenny, new bad Randy stabs the other two new good Randies, new Sidney is the killer, new Billy is the scapegoat, new Sidney kills new Maureen, new Dewey is creepy AF and hates Gale, etc.). That feels new enough for me (pun intended), specially 'cause it's justified. It's nowhere near my favourite of the franchise, but I've never though of it as too derivative. I do about Screams 5 and 6, on the other hand.
This movie is interwoven with that which it is parodying so closely that I can't help but laugh hysterically at the tought of me, 12 years later, thinking about if I'm overthinking stuff as much as Marnie and Anna Paquin in the opening, doing the movie's job creating false merits for it just as they drag Stab for filth, or if it truly is the subtle meta-masterpiece that I'm claiming it to be. I don't know, Scream 4 is just a fever dream for me, honestly. This explanation was probably long and terrible but it is so hard for me to talk about it 😂

Love your take on the film. It reintroduces the viciousness that the original Scream movie had in terms of kills. Jill is my all time favorite Ghostface and her motive has never been topped in my opinion. I have adored the Scream Franchise since I saw the original in theaters in 1996, but I have noticed that Scream 4 is the entry that I always choose to revisit when I feel like watching a Scream film. It is likely the entry I have revisited the most over the years and I think it’s bc of several of the points that Beyond the Mask mentions in this video. It’s a self-contained story that is fun to watch and has a better integration of the new and old characters than Scream 2022. It has its flaws and many of them come from rewrites and the studio meddling with certain parts of the film. When I see some of alternate scenes and read parts of Kevin’s original script, I can overlook the flaws a bit more and wish that the movie Kevin and Wes had originally envisioned had been allowed to make it to the screen as it would have been an even better movie.
I enjoy Sidney in this film and it’s nice to see her back for more than just the final act like we were given in Scream 3. Gale was the lead of Scream 3 in my opinion and she’s even better in the 4th movie. Scream 2022 and Scream 6 have not recaptured the essence of Gale Weathers like she was in Scream 4. Dewey really is pointless, unreasonable, and incompetent in Scream 4, which is why I felt his death in Scream 2022 was warranted.
I will always prefer the alternative opening to Scream 4 bc it fits the theme of the movie so much better, but I still enjoy having the fake Stab openings giving us fun fake out Scream scenes with some of the most prominent young actresses that were popular at the time. That was an aspect of Scream 3 and Scream 2022 that I found lacking, as I remember Scream being a franchise that hired big name actors/actresses that were popular at the time and including them in the movies as Stab cameos, side characters with one or two scenes, or cannon fodder for Ghostface. The casting of big names for small roles added to the meta nature of films by capturing the essence of the Hollywood landscape as it existed during each of the films’ release dates. It helps to take you back to the time it was made and enhances the rewatching experience.
Scream 4 was ahead of it’s time so I am so happy to see it finally getting the recognition that it deserves.

This is my favorite motive and if it had come out today people would have flipped. TH-cam had only just become a thing. This franchise has brilliant red herrings but this one wins. It was so easy to point out Billy and Micky. Definitely didn’t see the fake death coming, but that was when a normal human character dies, they’re dead. I refuse to believe people went in and within twenty minutes knew it was Jill. It was so smart to essentially make Kirby the lead so you kind of forget about Jill. And she really did almost get away with it. And scene.

Unpopular opinion, but Scream 4 is my favorite sequel. Yes, it has flaws, even some big ones (the fake out opening scene). I love Gale in this movie, Jill and Kirby were fantastic characters, and I like how intimate if felt after going to college and Hollywood. Watching Scream 5 all I could think was I’ve seen a better return to Woodsboro movie and please stop beating me upside the head with fan service.

      @JesusStJamesDR ปีที่แล้ว +5

I thought the opening was a brilliant statement and parody of horror franchise timelines since they are often messy or completely defunct. If they had made a joke about hoping Stab 8 forgets the fictional sequels and pickups with Sidney Prescott after Stab 3 I think people would have understood the opening better. Especially with that kind of dig at the Halloween movies, imagine what that joke would feel like now after the recent Halloween trilogy attempt.

The opening fake out is the perfect example of show vs tell. (The Woodsboro opening: Jenny tells Marni why it works. But we, as an audience got to see it instead of her just saying it.) Plus opening fake out mirrors the closing fake out whilst showing Stab6 in the first closing fake out. The absolute meta-ness in this film is on-point.

Was 1:49 in there to acknowledge that Scream 4 has a big gay fan base? It does certainly seem that way on social media. I'm gay and personally I think it's near the top in terms of my favorites out of the franchise. I honestly didn't care that the characters don't progress or anything, I sort of like that a lot of the kids are just jerks because it kind of allows you to reflect back once the killer is revealed and almost root for Jill. Obviously you want Sidney to survive, but it's sort of fun to root for the killer especially if she's so flamboyant and unhinged. It's like with Jill the Scream franchise gets its Michael Myers or Jason.

The biggest kudos about S4 is a window to the real world, Jill was a mastermind, she figured out all well, she will be the final girl, after ended Sidney, and she just go for the likes and the fame. Her phrase "I don't need friends, I need fans!", aged really well, this thing happen all the time even nowadays. This script was brilliant because this wasn't only an slasher movie, this was also a great criticism to our society.

OMG... Yeah, I always said Scream 4 was soooo underrated! This movie really nailed where Scream 2022 failed... in the remake/sequel aspect! Scream 4 play with the "remake idea" and push the idea even further.
This is another perfect Wes / Kevin match...
Once aspect as you said, the blend of legacy and new character here is great (compare to in 2022). The meta was great and we (as viewers) were always on our toes trying to guess who's the killer (This is one of the issues with the new movies... we are never wondering who's the killer).
And OMG... Jill? Probably still one of the best reveal and motive for a killer! Even as today, it's still scary as hell (and accurate). I know we are saying the new Scream 6 Ghostface is so dark and different... but Jill was DARK and her motive / plans was even more! And knowing this was a movie released 11 years after the first trilogy, I would have been fine if her plan went all the way to success. It was so twisted and such a critique about our society... (and still is now).
Scream 4 deserves so much love!

Now my favorite thing is to know that I have always appreciated screen four. I always thought it was ahead of its time, especially with technology and if you’re a real fan, you would look back and know that the evolvingof technology is pretty much a part of scream itself. I have to politely disagree that Sidney didn't grow in Scream 4. She had such a strong survivor vibe and had shared her journey in her book. She wasn't quite as badass as she was in other movies, like when she was actually scared of Jill in the hospital. But I feel like overall, Sidney truly was out of darkness and it showed. She was more mature and wasn't hiding anymore.

Ok so, as someone who has been a die-hard Scream fan ever since my dad showed me the original as a kid, I gotta say that 4 is pretty bad. I do agree that at the time, it was awesome to see the franchise reborn in a sense with a new movie being brought to a new generation...However, with more time passed, more installments and even more added to the original story...Scream 4 probably does deserve that low ranking.
In my personal opinion, the movie was very forced in many ways. For example, in Scream 5, Sidney showed up by choice even tho the killer was not after her whatsoever. Her presence in 4 was very forced...and by that, I mean that the movie itself suffered due to forcing another entry in Sid's story, which came to a good end in 3. The Character of Jill in general was boring in the beginning and even up to her killer reveal felt insanely forced to mimic Sidney...yes, I do get that was her whole motive in the end, but I still feel it was a very unnecessary installment and just a way to bring the series back without changing it too much. BUT...this made it one of the most unrealistic, random, non-fitting installments in my opinion.
Sidney's story as the main target should have ended after her altercation with Roman in 3, because the original story line was finally brought to an end. luring Sid back to town just to basically reboot the franchise was lazy. Was the movie terrible? No, very watchable honestly. There is just a lot that bothers me and a lotta other fans about this movie that I cant help but notice people take as wayyy too deep...Charlie was obviously the killer from the trailer, I could see that at 12 years old, Jill was not obvious but once she was revealed, it was disappointing and frankly, pretty stupid to watch given how OP she was for a random high school girl.
I won't even dive into all the annoying tropes in the movie such as the overuse of unrealistic technology for the time...vloggers/content creators in 2011 were not constantly streaming let alone with a headset camera, Trevor's character was literally wearing Neil Prescott's outfit and still no one noticed he was the token creep being framed and the whole "I'm jealous of Sidney" thing was insanely overdone by that point.
Decent movie in general, poor sequel to 3 and was definitely bested by the story given to us in 5 & 6. So my final thought in this rant? Scream 4 is ok as a stand-alone movie but the film and its killers truly do not compare with the rest of the franchise as a whole.

The thing that makes Jill a great ghostface is that she is the only one to actually achieve her goal.
Remember both her and Charlie were recording their murders?
By sacrificing her partner in crime this shows Jill will go to any length to get fame. Therefore Jill had probably uploaded some of their videos onto the dark web, inspiring Ghostface attacks across the globe. All without Charlie knowing.

The other thing that works with Jill being the killer is Emma Roberts is so believable as a sweetheart but also so believable as a self-entitled bitch. The two female killers in the last two "Scream" movies were played by actresses who thought being a psycho meant they had to be over the top and hammy... to me, as someone who works in film and analyzes performances' differently than most... it comes off like young actresses trying to impress people. With Jill, it just felt like a character who wasn't aware she was being filmed. A major difference. Emma also was known primarily for being clean-cut (except for her roles in small indies which Wes Craven had a hand in) so she didn't start doing all these bitchy characters until after "Scream 4" told the industry she could do them.

I think if they ended the film with Jill actually surviving and leaving us on kind of a cliffhanger, it would of been an amazing way to start the 5th film, with ghostface killer actually winning for once, or seemingly so.
