Not all agents use query-tracker, but writers deserve a response. It's just respectful. Writing is hard work. PS, I'd never wait 2 years for every query. I won't live that long, ha.

Yeah, reentering the query trenches after finishing and editing my manuscript. Yes, the hardest part about writing toward mainstream publication is the waiting and the silence by far.

Hair's looking healthy, David! You two have great hair. I took a writing break and now I'm gearing up to get back to it today. What a better way to kick off a writing bender than watching your latest video! Much love, Al xo

Getting an agent is like dating. I thought those days were over...oddly, comments here are all about your fab hair! Bottom line, "THEY HAVEN'T EVEN READ IT!" I GET THAT!! (I also can grow a moustache.)

Thank you for your videos. I appreciate the encouragement to be proactive about follow up, but so many agent submission pages now state explicitly: "If you have not heard from us in X number of weeks, assume it's a decline." So...? Do we honor their clear instruction or no?

You're right. This is a difficult situation. If you have the agent's email, you can send a follow up with any kind of update about your writing/career/something going on the world that's related to your topic and then ask if they have had a chance to read after.

Most writers, even seasoned ones can be horrible at writing query letters. It is that simple. I kept all my books offline and went looking for a traditional agent, publisher. I couldn't put two sentences together to save my life. I finally self published. You can say things like, "Well, maybe your not a good writer, you should take up synchronized swimming or something.." That may very well be true, but I have talked with other writers who feel the same way, and I know they are pretty good writers.. I have watched my fill of youtube telling me how to write one.. I struggle with that more than anything else, because it has too much to do with time and chance and, as often is said, do your research on the agent or publisher you're trying to hook up with, which is hit and miss to say the least.
There needs to be a better way.. Like a writer's pool where writers put a portion of their work in and agents, publishers come looking for them. Of course you would have to include Genre, word count, things like that, but there are just too many writers today, thanks to the internet, that agents and publishers have to find the right one at the right time, and then wait six months to a year to get published...
If there was a writer pool, agents and publishers could go through and pick and choose rather than have to deal with every million and six letters weekly.
Based on particular criteria, an agent or publisher could look at your work. Don't tell me that they are looking to see if you can tell your story in a short paragraph, if we could do that, there would be no need for novels. We'd just pop a thought into their head.

Got a question. Should I prepare a synopsis in addition to a query when I'm done my novel and ready to query? Thanks

What age group and what genre, Ally? Is this the middle grade novel? If so, no synopsis necessary most of the time.
