Dearest Christy, I'm so thrilled for you! I could definitely tell the difference in your face when you were first talking to Bailey. Working with an agent will be challenging but ultimately it's going to be a relationship of trust, and you looked like you felt you were in a safe place when talking to her. That's huge. Please remember this very thing always: there is a difference between making compromises, and feeling compromised. The agent that asked you to change the crux of what you loved about the story and the characters' relationships... I think that very much jumps from the territory of "making compromises" (which you might very well do with other agents with reasonable requests) and into the territory of "feeling fundamentally compromised" (which would be a deal-breaker, pulling the hearth out of the story's house). Asking you to add in a romance plot very much reflects the current trends, and over 2023 Romantasy as a genre was huge, so they're looking at what's going to sell. But trends come and go. I feel like a romantasy could almost make a novel dated, which could be at odds with the more 1920's-vibe of your novel that you worked so hard to create. Bailey clearly believes that your work can stand on its own two feet without those feet having to do a coordinated dance for a tiktok/booktok trend. I'm so proud of you.

I don't like the agents asks if you present your script to others, I I think this is not right to say so because in business we should not talk about especially saying names or publishing houses names, I had a really bad relation with some of them when they know that you present your work, they say : " so we are not the first ", bullshit from their side.

I feel like I have to vent about that second agent asking you to add in a romance plot. I'm sorry (I'm not), but that's complete bullshit. You don't need romance to make stories good. Hell, romance requires so much thematic consideration that just "adding in a romance" for the hell of it could turn your story to shit. Not to mention that not everybody craves the constant romance vibes. It's stupid. And yes, I know that I'm Aromantic so my feelings on romance are a little bit different from the norm, but there are a WHOLE ton of people who aren't aro who I have seen agree with me (and us Aros deserve that non-romance stuff as well, even if that may be a bit selfish).
Not to mention in some genres it’d be completely out of place and feel weird. I think it’s because it’s pretty trendy now, all these crappy romance books tik tok raves about, but trends die lmao. Then what would you do?
This video came out right as I started my querying journey and now that I got my first rejections (and ghostings), I find myself coming back for this just to know that I'm not alone. Querying is so hard but I have to keep reminding myself that there's a light at the end of the tunnel.

As for those first two agents:
- I felt like they wanted to change your book to something different that is not your story anymore. Adding in a romance plot once the book is already finished?...
- With the third agent you really looked different! That joy on your face after the offer of representation actually brought tears to my eyes! It was so great to hear you got the opposite as to what you expected!
- It's great that agent 4 also was much more in line with your ideas for your book.

This was an INCREDIBLE vlog, and I’m so happy to hear you got representation! I’m a writer as well, and I related so much to the many struggles you talked about going through in the quest to become published. It’s so emotionally exhausting. So many ups and downs. I’m currently in somewhat of a down period myself, which sucks, but I suppose this is just what it’s like to be a writer sometimes. I don't like the agents asks if you present your script to others, I I think this is not right to say so because in business we should not talk about especially saying names or publishing houses names, I had a really bad relation with some of them when they know that you present your work, they say : " so we are not the first ", bullshit from their side.

I feel like I have to vent about that second agent asking you to add in a romance plot. I'm sorry (I'm not), but that's complete bullshit. You don't need romance to make stories good. Hell, romance requires so much thematic consideration that just "adding in a romance" for the hell of it could turn your story to shit. Not to mention that not everybody craves the constant romance vibes. It's stupid. And yes, I know that I'm Aromantic so my feelings on romance are a little bit different from the norm, but there are a WHOLE ton of people who aren't aro who I have seen agree with me (and us Aros deserve that non-romance stuff as well, even if that may be a bit selfish).
Not to mention in some genres it’d be completely out of place and feel weird. I think it’s because it’s pretty trendy now, all these crappy romance books tik tok raves about, but trends die lmao. Then what would you do?

This video came out right as I started my querying journey and now that I got my first rejections (and ghostings), I find myself coming back for this just to know that I'm not alone. Querying is so hard but I have to keep reminding myself that there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
