WHAT WE COVER IN THIS VIDEO
0:11 It's important to have a professional author photo. An enticing, interesting photo can really help your book. You want an author photo BEFORE you become an author.
0:29 You don't have to look like a model; you just have to look your best.
0:41 Learn from great author photo examples!
1:28 Capturing YOU is what author photos are all about. But here are poses you should avoid.
2:05 Make the most of your photo shoot. Do a whole series of poses: serious to goofy, sexy to thoughtful. This way, you have a number of choices for the media and for different sources.
3:04 Don't be cheap. A six-year-old, semi-cute pic taken by your cousin will not do. It's usually worth the money to go to a professional photographer with a studio and lights. Peruse the photographers' portfolios. Most of all, find a photographer you're comfortable with because this will make for more natural shots.
3:59 Author photos can help you get press. Book reviewers look at them, booksellers, media, readers. Interesting, beautiful, or unusual photographs have a way of ending up in "pick of the week" sections, on homepages, on blogs because arresting visuals arrest readers.
5:36 Don't wait until you have a book deal. Do it NOW.
5:45 Bring a change of clothes. Sometimes a small, appropriate prop can be fun, as long as it doesn't dominate the picture. Mike Daisy was photographed with a toy dog bone for his book 21 DOG YEARS. It became a much-published photo in newspapers and magazines. Simple prop. Used beautifully.
6:48 Take the essence of who you are and share that through your author photo.
6:56 If you don't feel comfortable in front of a camera, bring a friend to loosen you up. Try engaging in a conversation as you're being photographed.

I love this video. I think about you guys and I'm always hoping you're doing okay. Sounds like not only "okay," but flourishing, which is fantastic. I so get you on author photos. I always look. I recall being 18 (a longggg time ago) I recall reading Anne Rice's (who's a beloved friend now, btw) Interview With the Vampire, being totally enthralled by it, and when I was done reading the book turning it over and looking at the pretty young author on the back of the book and asking "how do you know me so well?" Take care guys.
