- In this very short video, I explain how to reformat an external USB drive that is being used for media storage on the Xbox One, so that it can be used to store games and apps. Please note that doing this will delete all the data currently stored on the drive.

Make sure that the hard drive you are using is USB 3.0 to format for Games & Apps. If you are getting issues where it does not prompt to format for Games. Then check the serial of the external hard drive to check if its USB 2.0 or 3.0. If it is 3.0 make sure that the drive is properly formatted. If it is USB 2.0 you can only use it for Media Storage.

Okay i have a 3.0 and i formatted it but it does not give me the option to reformat it for apps and games, only media stuff is there another way i cant pay enugh for an external hard drive rn

And everything looks the same until "format for games and apps" (it was set up for media, it never gave me the option to pick) I saw you're other comments and you where mentioning you need a pc, but I don't have a computer. You’re probably going to need to reformat the drive on a PC. Once that’s done you should have the option to set it up for games and apps. I actually made a video on how to format the drive correctly in these circumstances so let me know if you need to do that.

Tra M It might be that the drive needs to be formatted on a computer first. This happens with some drives if they've previously been used on a computer. Basically, you need to set it up as a simple volume, then take it back to the Xbox and it should work.

WooLfy it has to be a 3.0 USB or faster and it must have at least 256 GB or higher
Mine is a 3 with 256 and it says view contents nothing else

Mine just disappeared after saying to use it for media but I meant to format for extra room for my games but I can't get it to pop up in storage devices or pull up the original menu when I try unplugging it and re inserting the hard drive. What do I do if when I plug in hard drive on sons Xbox it says it’s there on notifications but not on storage screen at all. Only the internal memory is. Guessing he may have set up wrong but not sure

sagar syal You should connect it to a PC and format the drive as a simple volume. That may solve your problem.

DO not plug the seagate external drive into the REAR USB Ports those are only USB 2.0 It has to be plugged into the side USB port as it is 3.0 and will support the ability to format the drive to games and apps hope this helps someone as it took me far to long to realise this

I plugged my Hard drive in but it doesn’t show up in my Manage Storage Section nor does it have a box that opens up that lets me choose to format or not how do I fix this?
I also encountered this problem.Solution, plug external hard drive in the USB port at rear of XBOX ONE when console has been turned off.When u repeat process in video, the option to format from media should now be visible.
If the option isn't available then the hard drive has probably been used before and has been formatted to a previous console. Only They have administration rights to format HDD.Solution, format HDD via a PC. You will know if its been used before, previous owners Xbox live gamer tag/account will be visible.

What file system type do both of these options format the drive as? fat32? ntfs? special?
When the Xbox formats a drive so that you can play games from the drive, it uses a proprietry format. That means the drive only works on the Xbox.
Now say if I put games on this usb drive and then plugged it in on my pc would these games work for xenia

When I click on format for games and apps a new screen dosent pop up it just goes back and I dont have a PC
i pressed format and nothing happened, and it didn’t show up in the storage devices bit in settings
Super helpful even though I already did these steps and we have the XBox Series X|S consoles, the same process applies - so I did all these but I didn’t select the pop up when it finished formatting, so it never refreshed to show that the drive was ready. I had no idea how quickly it formatted for games and figured it’d take a minute like an old school PC or disc drive so I was waiting and waiting LOL. It’s literally a few seconds - so I refreshed (or for others who need help, as long as it’s been a minute or two and you didn’t see/hear the pop-up notification saying the device is ready, you can just unplug the flash drive and plug it back in if it’s been long enough to format - luckily my 128GB USB 3.0 flash drive also has a light beacon that shows when it’s busy or not so I knew it was done) and voilà- a bunch of extra storage. Even my Series S now has the original 500GB, then the additional 1GB Seagate official expansion, and now 128GB on my flash drive. Works perfectly and I just wanted to see a video of someone doing it this way first to make sure I wouldn’t muck it up. So thanks mate!

That's a weird one. I've not encountered that before. Have you tried a different usb cable and/or plugging the drive into a different usb socket? Dodgy cables can cause that kind of thing.

When I "click A" to change from Storage or Media to Game Storage, the option to change it to Game storage does not even show up. I'm using a Seagate USB 3.2 Gen 1 external Game Drive. Help lol
This video was just the first one to pop up for my search, but its not exactly what I'm looking for. I need help trying to move DLC from my 360 to my xbox one, and I tried putting it on a hard drive and transferring it, but the xbox will only read music and shit. How do I transfer the data. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Caleb Marshall Not sure if you’ve already tried this or not but here goes:
On the Xbox One
1) Go to Games and Apps
2) Navigate to the 360 game for which you have already purchased dlc
3) press the menu button on the controller
4) on the menu that pops up select “manage game and add-ons
5) Select “Ready to Install” from the left hand menu
You should see a list of the dlc associated with the game. Choose the dlc you want to install.
You can’t purchase dlc for 360 games from the Xbox One. You will either have to do it from a 360 or purchase the items from the Xbox store online.

Iv a WD 1TB hard drive 2018 from a sky q box. How do i format this for xbox one s as my hard drive in the console is wearing badly. Is it the same processe as this video or do i have to get something else
Your problem is a bit different. If the drive inside your Xbox is dying you are going to have to replace it and that is a wholly different process to that described here.
If you still want to use your old Sky Q drive, you’ll need to connect it to a PC and use disk management to reformat it before connecting it to the Xbox. This video shows what you would need to do:

My external drive is an IOMEGA 298gb hard drive that has been formatted to exfat. When plugged into my Xbox One S it gives me the option to view contents (has none) or store captures there. How do I change this to store games/apps?
S Beuerlein ok, a couple of questions first: is the drive usb3? If not you’re out of luck I’m afraid. Also, why are you going with such a small drive? I honestly wouldn’t use anything smaller than 500gb for games and apps and 1TB would be much better.
As for the drive not working for games and apps, I suspect it’s the usb issue I mention above.

Can you change it after you format it?
Followed all the steps and after I changed the name and then pressed ‘ format storage device ‘ it won’t pop up along side my internal. I’ve tried putting it in different ports ( except side being a 2.0 ) and even restart my Xbox a couple time but just not getting any response from it now I’ve changed it from media to be able to hold games? It’s like it’s disappeared even though it’s plugged in.
You may need to reformat the drive on a PC. Once you've done that you should be able to start again. Have you tried a different cable, though? That can sometimes help.

Try changing the usb you are plugged into, then switch out the cable. If neither work try reformatting using a PC.

Have you used the drive anywhere else, or is it new? If it has been used before, you may need to reformat it under windows as a simple partition. If it's new, you could try a different usb cable as that is sometimes the issue.

Can i get a hard drive i used to store dlc on my 360 to work on my xbox one for a backwards compatiple game? Also i made a whole new account with my xbox one so i didnt have the dlc when i downloaded the game on my xbox one, but i have the hard drives with the dlc on them....Please Help if u can
Depending on the capacity and usb type, you should be able to use the drive. However, the process of setting it up will delete everything on it.
Any dlc you bought with one account won’t generally work with another account due to it being locked to the account.
joe chip i want to add more videos and music to my external hard drive but i can't as it says its full and its not as its 3.2 tb free of 3.6 tb which only 12% is used..in other words i got plenty of room for alot of videos and music..if you can help that would be great..i also tried to format it but didn't get the option to have media and music

It might be worth reformatting the drive on a PC through disk management, then trying again.
Just got a brand new hard drive. Never has been on a pc and it’s usb 3.0 and 500gb. Every time I try to do the reformat thing the option to reformat the hard drive dosnt pop up. I’ve reset my Xbox, unplugged the hard drive, and then reset my Xbox, and still nothing is working. Any idea how to help?

It may be that you need to format the drive on a PC first. I’ve not had that with a new drive, only those I’ve previously used elsewhere but it is possible.

When I hit (A) it only shows "view contents" or set as "capture location". It's a 120gb Kingston HyperX SSD attached to a SATA to USB adapter. I'm wondering if the adapter is too old or not USB3 compliant? Or would it have anything to do with the drive size?
The problem is the drive size. Minimum is 256GB.
The adapter has to be usb 3.0 or better.

So I only have a 128 gig usb and I just found out that it takes a minimum of 256 to be able to do this. I don’t get why because that’s more than the Xbox comes with stock. Does anyone know how to get around this?
The minimum size the Xbox comes with is 500GB. Anything less than that and it would be really struggling. Unless you are only going to be playing a very small number of games, I would say 256GB external hard drive is actually inadequate.
I am trying to get mine to set as capture location and the I change it to the ntfs format and then when I put it back in I can’t see the usb drive.

Unfortunately not. Once the drive is formatted for games and apps that’s all it can be used for.

Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely that you can recover your data. You could try some recovery software but that can be very hit and miss, or you could pay a company to recover it for you, but even that’s not guaranteed to work. Sorry.
I don’t see that I used my storage device on my Xbox has 30+ games on it then I put it into my PS4 for some dumb reason when I put it back I got the media or games message I clicked media cause it said it saves everything now my storage device doesn’t appear any where not in settings when I plug it in

Well, you have almost certainly lost your games etc from the drive. But no worries, you can download them again. The only issues you might encounter would be with saves and trophies (but if you have PS Plus, even saves and trophies should be ok).

I had a question when I first got my terabyte device and then looked at how much storage was on it it said that 200 megabytes for being used off of a 1.7 terabyte storage does anyone know about this please help?!
This is most likely to do with the way sizes are calculated for hard drives. Basically 1.7TB sounds about right. It's a pain in the arse as drives never show up as having as much space as you would think but there isn't anything wrong with the drive.

Videos won't be stored on a drive formatted for games and apps. You'd need to set the drive as your capture drive, which precludes it from being used for games and apps. If you do set an external drive up as your capture drive, then you can edit the captures on a PC, yes.
It works on certain hard disk only I have hard disk from many years old seagate not detected for games as well as new t5 ssd too ..
when I clip A on Pictures,Music & Videos it says
"View Content" and "Set as capture location"

You may need to reformat the drive on a PC from within disk management. Make sure you back-up anything on the drive first, though. If you need help with that, I have a video that explains how to do it. Let me know.
