    If you're looking for instructions on how to setup and use an external hard drive on an Xbox, you've come to the right place! In this video I explain how to correctly format the drive and how to move games back and forth between internal and external storage. These days, games are taking up more and more space but the good thing is that you can use any USB 3 drive on the Xbox. And the way to tell if the drive is compatible is the blue plastic inside the connectors. It's subtle but a quick and easy way to visually tell which hard drives will work.
    And with portable USB drives you won't even need an AC power supply. You can also buy SSDs like this WD Black D30 which are plug and play. SSD stands for solid state drive in case you didn't know and you'll definitely get faster transfer speeds with something like this. No matter what you choose, here's how you set it up. With the external storage plugged in, the Xbox will ask me to configure this drive. If I choose Use For Media the Xbox won't have to format the drive. That's because it's currently set up to store only photos, videos and other files... But it won't work for Xbox games. However, it will work on a Windows computer because it's typically already formatted to work on PCs.
    But to use it for Xbox games select the Format Storage Device button. This will erase everything on the external hard drive and reformat it to only work on the Xbox. So keep that in mind. Then I can rename the drive for easier identification. Giving the drive a unique name really helps when switching between internal and external storage. When done, select and click on the arrow at the bottom right.
    On the next screen I need to tell the Xbox whether I want new games downloaded directly to the external drive or continue saving on the internal storage. Choose your preference here but for now I just want to keep downloading to my internal storage. On this screen, I can cancel or begin formatting. I definitely want to use my external storage for games so I'll choose Format Storage Device. And pretty quickly, the Xbox will confirm my new drive is ready to use!
    At this point, managing storage is an important thing to know how to do. I can manually move them to free up space on the Xbox. Here's how to do it. On the Home screen, navigate to the My Games and Apps button and hit A. In the Games tab, select a game to move. When I press the Menu button on the controller, a pop up window will appear. Here I'll select and click on Manage Game. If I choose to copy the game, the original game file will still remain on the internal drive. Or I can select Move All. Using Move All will transfer the game files to the external drive and delete it from the original location. I want to move the game so I’ll click A on the Move All button.
    On the next screen I'll select Move to confirm this is what I want to do. I can now watch the transfer progress and the time it takes depends on the size of the game. When it’s done, I can see my selected game is now on the external drive. I can also move games from the external drive to internal storage on the Xbox. So after confirming I'm actually working on the external drive, I'll select Move All or Copy. Again, I'm just going to move the game. Here I’ll confirm to start to move the game.
    It's all pretty easy to do and hopefully you're able to following along to better manage your Xbox storage. If this video was helpful please give me a thumbs up and hit the subscribe button to stay up to date on all my weekly videos!

    I have a samsung T7 and i plugged it in the front. Didnt give me the option to format. And kept saying too slow if i tried the option for game clips. So i just tried one of the ports in the back and worked and got it formatted for games and apps. Ill have to try a transfer to see how it works or if it can play games off of it. If it's just storage and not able to play from. Thats fine.

    Hi Great Video. But had a doubt. Once I download some games in the Drive and then format it as shown in the video, will I be able to again plug it to my pc and download other games? If no, what should be done? Appreciate your help. Thanks

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once you format the external Xbox drive it will not work on a PC anymore. So it really should be a dedicated drive just for the Xbox console. In order for the drive to work on a PC again, you’ll need to reformat it on the PC. But that will erase everything. So you need to have separate drives for Xbox snd PC.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes you can play games directly from the external drive on your Xbox. But for next gen games made specifically for Xbox Series S/X those games can only be played from the internal drive or the external expansion card. Next gen games cannot be played from a USB 3.0 external drive.

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you will still have all your data and progress when you move your games to the external hard drive. Your game data is actually stored in the cloud with your Xbox profile. That’s why when you sign in on another Xbox your progress will be with you when you play.

    Does this mean that if I use a WD My Book for my Xbox One, go and buy an Xbox X, that when I configure it on the Xbox X it will delete everything that is stored on there for my Xbox One?

    • @mpzurlino
      @mpzurlino ปีที่แล้ว

      Nvm. I believe your last tip answered my question :)

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually if your external USB 3 drive is already formatted on Xbox One it will work on the One X/S no problem. Just unplug from the Xbox One and plug it into the One X/S. No need to format it in this situation. It’s only when the hard drive is new is when you need to format it for the Xbox. Just remember it will erase everything when you format.

  • @PARADOX672
    @PARADOX672 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    so you have to move the games back to the xbox before actually playing them?

    • @TheRenderQ
      @TheRenderQ  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you can play the Xbox games right from the external hard drive. No need to move them back to the console to play. Just keep the drive plugged in. Just remember the external drive has to be a USB 3 drive.

    Hey!
    Hope everyone is well 😊
    I myself are having a bit of a problem:
    I have 512GB SandDisk SSD (5A SCIA is what the Xbox is telling me) which I have used on the computer for files and pictures. The Xbox I have is Series S.
    1.) Firstly I connect the SSD to Xbox and hold down the power button and the Media Player pops up with my USB (D:) - cant do anything further.
    2.) Im going to Settings > Storage devices and see that I have the SSD only for Pictures, music and videos
    Conclusion: I cant store games or change installation locations for them.
    I tried looking up online where was said I need to plug the SSD to my computer again and format it? What does it exactly do?
    Other people that I saw were saying you need another cable for the said SSD (a blue one). Rigth now I have only green and black.
    Very grateful if someone could explain this to me and help me store my games. 😢
    Greetings!
