    Thank you! It feels like no one else is talking about how “other” storage can’t be deleted. I’ve had to reset my console a couple times to clear it. I hope PlayStation updates this in the future. I get it needs to be used for BC games and some other things but just trust us to clear it out so resetting isn’t a requirement. Less of an issue these days with the M2 drives etc as an option but it always feels weird when a company is like “no no no, don’t touch, you’ll break it” lol

      Right, I had just cleared space on the internal sad and i downloaded the modern warfare 2 beta on my external sad and the internal was full again. One other thing i need to check out with a game that wasn’t able to update when the internal was full but even filling external sod would take up a bunch of space on internal sad.

    I've always treated my M.2 & hdd drive as the PS4 game drive while the onboard storage was the PS5 game drive to minimize "other" storage. I never bothered to check that theory but it's cool to see it confirmed

      Can I save ps4 and ps5 games onto my 4tb ssd and play them even though the ps4 save data will be in the console storage?

  • @lyconxero457
    @lyconxero457 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I've had an external SSD for my PS4 games since I got my PS5 at launch and it's been fantastic. I get all the benefits of faster load times without taking away precious internal storage space. Right now it feels like I'm doing pretty good on internal storage space so I've not had any reason to buy an internal upgrade. What Mark Cerny said about what the average player needs seems to be true as I've bought plenty of games over the almost 2 years I've had the system but still haven't run out of space yet. And if that day does come then it's really not that big of a deal to simply delete games from my internal drive. I think I've actually done this for both PS4 and PS5 games that I've fully completed as it's not like I'm going to play them again anytime soon and I do still have their save data so re-installing the game isn't that big of a deal. The PS5 installs games SO MUCH FASTER than the PS4 that at most I'm usually waiting like 5 minutes instead of the 30 minutes to an hour I'd be waiting for PS4 games.

    Subsequently, this is also another reason why the PS5 with a disc drive is superior because in every single case that I've tested it is faster to install a game from a disc than downloading it despite having 600Mbps internet. Downloading a game for me seems to depend more on Sony's servers at that particular time which obviously vary depending on their current load but installing from the disc is always fast PLUS the system will automatically start downloading any patches or updates at the same time so you don't have to wait. This makes the idea of deleting games that you've finished off your system instead of opting for more internal storage all the more appealing as installing from the disc takes like 5 minutes tops for me as opposed to downloading which depending on various factors can take anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes.

    When I was finally able to get my hands on a PS5 through sony, I took my ps4 pro to gamestop and sold it. It was in a top notch condition so I got the max slae price. I think they gave me like 260 for it. Went to Amazon and bought a 2tb pci card for my ps5 for 240 bucks. It was perfect. Don't have to worry about storage anymore. I hope more devs publish their games in a way like COD CW, where it gives you the choice to keep part of the game you actually play and delete the rest. Thanks for the tips! Great video!

    Also, since we're at it:
    We should be louder and mention the PRICE per Gigabyte for the Storage Expansion!
    Right now, a 2TB SSD that is compatible with the PS5 is around 150€, though not recommended. The Recommended ones are around 200-230€.
    Working, but not recommended, 1TB SSDs for PS5 are available for 70€, the recommended ones are at around 120-140€ (quite pricy)
    The Storage Expansion for the Competiiton right now is ~150€ for ½TB, ~230-260€ for 1TB, 410€ for 2TB...
    And its only rated for 2,4GB/sec, not 5-7GB/sec...

    Out standing information as always friend, but please in future vids. Point out to users of external drives, to plug them in the rear of there consoles as the front USB outlet is really for recharging. It can be used as a data transfer port but the loading time is much longer. The rear ports are made for data transferring.

    5:02 One day after having a power outage while PS5 was in rest mode, I got a nasty glitch - rest mode stopped working correctly. Sometimes after waking up from the rest mode, game icons would become blank, and if I presssed the options button, the menu (check for updates, delete the game etc.) wouldn't appear. If I started the game, it fixed the icon, and restarting the console fixed all the icons, but only till I used the rest mode a few times again. May be a minor bug, but annoying nonetheless and seemingly unfixable without resetting everything to factory settings.
    I know it's said in the video that this whole rest mode trick is risky, and here's my example how exactly it's risky.

      I would recommend just getting an external SSD with a USB connection for PS4 games, as the loading time difference isn’t much between the external and an M.2. Also, then you still get faster loading than a HDD and you can save space for PS5 games on the M.2. Not to mention that the external SSD would be cheaper too

    I feel that is the one way current gen consoles really missed up. With each generation, video game footprints have grown exponentially but storage space hasn't grown with it. 1TB these days is absolutely nothing. If a person is an avid gamer I would argue that an M.2 drive is a necessity to fit your games on. I know it was for me. I've always used an external HDD for my PS4 titles but it's still easy to quickly run out of space for current gen games.

Got a 4TB external hard drive for my PS4 games, and was curious to know about that, if I wanted to move it over to PS5 to save the SSD storage. I guess that the console will save the save game files for those games, but that's not a big deal.

I actually had the new 2TB WD Black SN850 in my hand but I just couldn’t do it for the price and instead I got the WD Black P10 8TB drive which also said rated for PS4 & PS5 on it for a lot cheaper than the SN850. I don’t mind transferring games so it was a no brainer and 8TB should last me a long time.

    Another hack. If you can't transfer clips to another device or something, ALWAYS edit clips as you save them. Maybe something cool happened, and you just to be sure saved 5 min clips. Doing this enough times will make up several GB of data for a single game. Editing clips down by a few seconds or minutes to ONLY have the part you want can quickly save you anywhere from 10-100 GB of storage oif you're like me.

      I wouldn't recommend first party USB HDDs though and go for a 3rd Party one, such as Intenso.
      The Reason is that the first party is even harder to open and also uses integrated, dedicated USB HDDs, while 3rd parties can use USB to SATA Converter boards...
      Though for a Game Drive, that doesn't hold any data of value, it shouldn't matter much at all.

    Download time for a full game install varies by your internet connection. The time it took you to download Horizon Forbidden West took me less than 1/4 the time it took you with a gigabit connection. It’s faster for me to do a full download vs transferring to an external drive. For others I get it, and this may not be the case. Before upgrading to the PS5 I got a couple weeks ago, I transferred all of my PS4 games onto an 8TB external drive. I’ve also paid the exorbitant amount it costs for a 4TB m.2 ssd, so my digital PS5 has almost 13TB of storage space.

  • @lordeowstheking

    Didn't realize that having games played off of your external hard drive would affect the loading time and how some of the games perform on the PS5. Seems weird performance wise because the PS4 didn't have that problem but I understand that I will have to put games onto my console in order to get the quick fast loading times.

      It’s because the internal SSD has a transfer speed of 5-7Gb/s whereas even external SSDs top out at around 500Mb/s. So pretty much the internal SSD is around 10x the speed of an external drive, and that’s if it’s an SSD instead of a hard drive. The PS4 on the other hand used a hard drive internally, so the speed wasn’t much different internal or external

    Thanks for looking into this issue. However there is a big how problem they is simply not being addressed by the playstation community. I have contacted Sony personally about this, and it seems there is no fix. Try it out and you will see the problem for yourself. Put every game you have on external storage. Be it m. 2 for ps5 games and ssd for ps4 games. Just make sure you have no playstation games saved on the playstation internal ssd. Now you will come across the huge issue. Which is the games and app section of you playstation internal ssd. Will still be flooded with gbs of ghost data. That you can't delete. If you click on the games and apps. You it seems like its actually empty. But it's not. Regardless of saving your games to external devices. The ps5 still seems to save some bits of those games to the internal ssd by default. It also uses this games and apps section as cache. That doesn't delete itself. It just keeps stacking on top of itself. Every time play a new game it just adds more on top. So for someone like me who has a 4tb m. 2 for ps5 games and a 4tb ssd for ps4 games. The internal ssd actually got to the point where the games and apps section was over 200gb. Plus the other section kept growing too. I had no choice but to factory reset the playstation 5. Which seems to be the only way to get it to actually wipe those two sections down to acceptable levels. But as soon as you play any new games. Guess what. The games and app section starts getting bigger again. For the average user. They will probably never notice this issue. And if they did it actually wouldn't bother them. But for a heavy user. Who likes to play loads of different types of games. This is a really bad issue. Something playstation didn't actually know existed. Until I brought it to their attention. And in the response email to me. Its something they actually can't do anything about. Its a fault built from the ground up of the playstation software design. I have the response email from Sony. If you would like me to post it to you. If you would like to make a video on this issue and shed some light on it. Many thanks

    • @mydogeatspuke
      @mydogeatspuke 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would take anything they say in those emails with a pinch of salt. They're first line support, they basically know nothing and just follow a script. They could tell you that the only way to fix your console is to drown it in a vat of acid and Sony wouldn't fire them and you wouldn't be able to do anything about it if you followed their advice. So them saying "we didn't know about this thing and we can't fix it" is completely meaningless, as is your email from them. If you were to post about it on Reddit, on the Playstation sub, thousands of other people would tell you the exact same thing. I'm a "heavy user" with hundreds of games installed at any time across 3 locations on one console and my Other section is only 40gb, so I don't know what exactly you're doing differently but I can assure you it isn't an issue that everyone is experiencing.

      @mydogeatspuke 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leonprez231 I would still expect there to be data in the "other" folder though, because PS5 games cannot be run from external storage, so it makes sense that the additional data required to run them from the internal storage would not transfer when they're moved to external storage. It downloads this data when the game is downloaded. I only have 40 ish PS5 games installed, some stored on external storage as the internal storage isn't large enough for them all. Perhaps you have more than I do installed? Perhaps you have larger games than I do installed? It's impossible to know. But if all of your PS5 games are moved to external storage and your "other" storage is still 200gb then that's something happening with your console specifically, due to either a problem or the specific games or size of those games.
