Have you thought of going into your storage shed blindfolded and grab a piece and build your project with what you selected. Might be an interesting challenge.
@@SpragueWoodturning I was in Thailand watching one of your projects and you mentioned a sale on resins with some colors to try so it was at my home waiting for me when I got there. The colors didn’t get in the box but no big deal. I called and talked to Gabriel and he said he will send some to me. You have a good name there when he asked how I heard of them I dropped your name and he thanked me and said he would ship some xtra to try. I am new and just learning to do this. I took down a Black Walnut tree last week and saved the tree, branches and stump with roots now I just need to learn to do this. I’ll keep watching.
Good morning 🌅, Jim and Family and Friends, another great project good looking piece of art, I have a board of Padouk 1”12 x10” x 10’ in my workshop, leftover from a bookcase that I made 30 years ago, and yes it turns brown, and Wenga some bits, I made a very large dinning table, and a coffee table as well, the table it self was made of Ash with solid wenga in it , it is prone for splitting, if not machine properly, I even finished part of the job, and came in the next day and part of the grain a delaminated, so I had to cut it apart and redo it again. I believe the bits I’ve got left over maybe from that part that was split., this is quite toxic, if you get a piece as a splinter in your finger and do not get it out it will fester, as I have mentioned before I have made literally thousands of pepper pots out of Blackwood and Rosewood et cetera over the years, air fed mask is essential, keep up the great work, I wish you all a great Christmas and a happy New Year, though I will not be celebrating myself as I live by myself, from France,
I never knew how to spell chatoyancy. I learned something new today. I love the finial. The pencil line spalted maple is one of my favorite things. It is so cool!
You sure know how to bring out the natural beauty in wood. The color of the padauk goes well with the copper inlay. Watching your short from the other day, I thought that it might have been one of the only times that we see you putting finish on the bottom of a piece.
Jim, I use powdered copper, brass, and bronze. I use unused StarBond bottles to apply the powder. Squeezing the bottle makes a narrow jet of metal to fill gaps. Your videos are always instructive and instructive. Most of what I have learned about turning came from your TH-cam channel. Designer Epoxy. Take care, Mac
I don’t think I’ve seen you do a finial like that before. I like it, and I like that you’re daring to push outside your “chunky pieces” comfort zone. Love the spalting on that bit too!
The yellow birch is really bizzy. The lid has nice color. The final has some awesome spallting. Like how tall it is, but it might be fragile. Very nice piece. Great job. 👍👍👍👍👍😎
That birch practically glows, some of the veining makes a kind of quilted pattern. The darker lid makes a lovely contrast and the finial looks great, too. Great job!😊
It amazes me the varieties of woods hold so much character, and each piece is unique and beautiful. Thanks Jim, for revealing the natural beauty hidden beneath the bark. Designer Epoxy is so versatile, for pouring or finishing, but all wood pieces are a treasure.
Beautiful lidded dish. I love the grain in that burl. I love your work with designer epoxy but it's nice to see you turn a solid wood project because that's what I'm still doing. I've learned so much watching you.
My Dad was a wood turner and hand carver. He would have loved to see you do your thing with naked wood and or Designer Epoxy. Beautiful work! Thanks Jim.
The finished product is gorgeous! The journey is often very different than what one planned, I have quite a few pieces that ended in a very different place. Oh yeah, Designer Epoxy!
So interesting seeing the different types of wood all working together to create a beautiful whole, not to mention the shiny copper inlay and the CHATTOYANCY! WOW! 🤩
Thank you. Now I finally know what the word chatoyance looks like. Never could get it correct enough so I could find it either in a dictionary or spellcheck. Really like your finial.
I am so glad that you went with the spalted finial. It is GORGEOUS! The black would have been cool, but the spalting is even cooler. The whole thing reminds me of an acorn. Beautiful!!
What an amazing lidded bowl!!! I LOVE the use of different woods! You did a fantastic job turning tge thin, delicate finial. Thank you, Jim for sharing this! ❤❤
Oh, that figure in the birch is fantastic, and the color of the lid sets it off, so well. And never go wrong with spalted maple. Although it is a shame that so much of the spalted maple became shavings. I love that you occasionally go back to just a natural wood. (No epoxy.) What a superb piece, Jim. Cheers!! Designer Epoxy
Wow, a Jim Sprague piece with no Designer Epoxy!? 😮 Beautiful piece! I love the chatoyance and all the different species combined! Well done as always.
I happen to appreciate both natural wood and epoxy enhanced craftmanship. Your instinctural choices have always resulted in awsome, jaw droppings, beautiful pieces. 💚🤗
Love the look of this one Jim. The three different types of wood gave it an amazing look. The finial is absolutely stunning. Love that pencil line spalting. Wishing you and your family a wonderful holiday. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊.
Beautiful combination of woods and form Jim! The birch burl is stunning as is the spalted finial and lid. Nice to see you bring something different to the form, great job as usual!
Love this piece, even without resin. :-) You did a great job on the finial. I think the size is a perfect fit for the size of the piece and the pencil line spalted maple is positively beautiful. Designer Epoxy
Absolutely beautiful piece!! Really like the different shape from what you have been doing and the finial sets off the beauty. You and Designer Epoxy are definitely a team.
Those three different types of wood ended up looking wonderful together! And your finial was the cherry on top of a truly fun piece. Hope you and your family have a great Holiday! Thank you.
Jim, the chatoyance in that bowl is crazy. I love the padauk and the pencil spalting on the finial is beautiful but I would have left that pointed end. All in all it is absolutely beautiful. Designer Epoxy.

Wow! You're correct, the chatoyance is amazing. It makes it look like there is a fire inside the wood that occasionally peeks out. The spalted maple really adds a wonderful touch. Beautiful job Jim. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Very nice! I like seeing the pieces that don't have designer epoxy in them too. It's a different, yet similar, craftsmanship to not rely on the epoxy to create something stunning.
Love the spalted wood, one of my favorite things to work with in both my cabinet and turning work. Great looking piece Jim. Nice to see you turning wood, I was beginning to think you didn't know how.

Very nice combination of wood species. Loved the copper inlay. My two cents, so many potential products would be firewood if it weren't for epoxy. It makes so many unique projects possible. As always enjoyed the finished project and tips along the way. Designer Epoxy
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought the lid was epoxy - surprise! That pauduk is gorgeous. The spalted finial also is great; you have come a long way in finials - lol.

Nice piece to see you working with only (well, mostly) wood. Good idea to mix it up a bit. Birch is not my favorite, but that piece of spalted maple is just amazing 🤩 Look forward to more projects with the copper powder.
Jim... Delicate and dainty are not words I would normally find appropriate in your work! Chunky... Yes, Solid... Yes but delicate & dainty... Not so much!! However... YES SIR! When you put your mind to it, you can! As you always say at the start of your videos.. "If it goes round and round" you can do ANYTHING!! What a beautiful piece of work! The finial is perfect in my eyes! And the different woods work so well together. Simply stunning, and not a drop of resin in sight!! (NB I don't count the finish as "resin"!!) Merry Christmas, Jim & all the best for 2025 - I hope you get all you want out of your new home and workshop. You work hard enough to deserve it!!
Very nice bowl. The birch is beautiful. I would have suggested a slightly flatter lid. The finial could have used a wider base and a much smaller, more delicate tip. But a very nice piece. Well done my friend. Designer Epoxy
I just realized today that hyper shift is chatoyance for epoxy, that's why you like it, Jim😁
That’s about right, lol. Thanks
