In this Gears of War 3 video arCtiC discusses the pros and cons of the Alternate Control Scheme in Gears of War 3. The Alternate Control Scheme reconfigures and differentiates the ability to wall bounce from the Default Control Scheme.
Default Control Scheme:
Roadie Run: A
Roll: A
Wall bounce: A
Mantle: A
Alternate Control Scheme:
Roadie Run: X
Roll: X
Wall Bounce: A
Mantle: A
Pick Up Weapon/Meatshield: Y
Execute: Press Right Analog Stick - เกม
Best intro! Very different from the ear drum scratching dubstep people usually throw on
One question Artic does this also work on the normal controller? or is it only recommended for Onza? Thank you!
No problem man, thanks for watching them and I'm glad they're useful for you
By the way Arctic i love your channel, i love your series and the work you have done and for me your channel is one of the best for the tips you explain, good job!!!
i"ve watch all ur videos and i"ve never sceen a how 2 strafe video i really need 1 keep up the great tips man watchin u has improed my game so much
Thanks for the video mate, nice look at both that controller and wallbouncing. I saw the "Razer Onza Tournament Edition Gaming Controller" on Amazon; is this the one you use? And would you say it is worth the £40 they're selling it for?
@TURTLEDUDE919 I have a separate sensitivity settings video with updated settings. Check the video description for the link
@itsmetheDevineone please check the video description. There is a link to my sensitivity settings/guide.
This definitely showcases the Razer Onza well, though I do have a question for you:
Does the Razer Onza really last? Is it durable enough for 8-16 hour gaming sessions?
I've read a few reviews on Newegg from customers who bought the Onza and found that the sticks started to wander after anywhere from a couple hours to a month of use. Can you claim otherwise?
@Antagoniiize I'm not sure it's not a question I can answer because I don't have that issue. All of my latest videos, I've been using the Onza and Alternate control Scheme and my gameplay has only continued to feel more fluid.
@Mikwen123 Thanks!
1) I would recommend switching first because the wall bouncing feels different with Alternate sometimes the distance seems shorter.
2) It doesnt hurt anything playing against bots, but I like throwing myself in the fire. I went straight into the action.
Glad you enjoy the videos.
I started using alt controls maybe like 3 to 4 days ago and it has really helped my bouncing but i seem to move slower in overall evading and taking cover cause of the 2 part of coming off cover is really making me not wanting to take cover nearly as much.So im wondering how long do you think it will take to get fully used these controls?
@Kahgro you can get them on Amazon, Razers site, or at
really love your vids... hopefully i get into one of your games sometimes. do you only do ranked?
@arCtiCvBi
I'm supposed to be getting GOW3 for christmas this year, and I was just wondering if you have any tips since I'll be a noob. Do you already have a video on tips and pointers or are you willing to make a video on it...or do you think you can sum up tips in a reply to this?
You are amazing bringing this to our attention. Really appreciate your work.
Hey arCitC,
Sick video and seriously thinking of investing in an onza...read a couple of reviews on them though...they don't seem to last long! How many have you been through?
no problem, thanks for watching :)
@Spev624 I commented previously on this issue. I have found that the distance to wall bounce seems shortened, but I don't have it happen frequently enough. I actually think the same thing occurs in default however those are the times that a "Roll" occurs. Whenever that happens I begin strafing so I think it still forces me to be conscience of my movement.
What tips can you offer for someone entering their first ever 1v1 tournament?
Hey arctic what made you go to using the left bumper for X and right bumper A? Is there any reason why its better?
I have gotten used to using the opposite way you do it.
Thanks.
@LazyEra I think that scheme does force a bit more emphasis on strafing because there are some odd instances where you want to wall bounce to a wall and it might be out of distance and if you tap "A" nothing happens....then you need to revert to strafing.
@arCtiCvBi do you keep the left mfb down when wall bouncing or do you just use the right mfb?
Another great video! Another great commentary, BEAST!
@DRXPrOtege yeah it definitely takes awhile to get used to, but the longer you use it the more natural it feels. Ultimately you'll end up with a smooth transition coming off of cover and general movement
now that youre using the onza with alternate controls, do you ever press the actual X and A buttons, or are you always using the MFBs for X and A?
@arCtiCvBi do you think the alternate control scheme would be better if the (X) button made you do the on cover actions too? so when you leave around a corner or hop over cover you can continue running without that pause. pretty much all you would use (A) for was getting into cover. i think they should change it to be that way, or make an Alternate 2 with it.
Arctic, so are you clawing the right side? I.e. Right MFB (right index) to wall bounce then Right Trigger (right middle) to fire, while maintaining both thumbs on both sticks?
recently got the onza and i must say, it has improved my gameplay on gears quite a bit
@arCtiCvBi :o ok, but if you werent planning on making a video, andyou didn't have anOnza, just Default vs Alternate what would you choose? (Sorry for asking but i'm struggling on choosing).
arctic using ur onza do u shoot with ur middle finger or index because i"m trying out using my middle finger an it feels like i"m playing with a ps3 controller
Hey Arctic, just bought a ranzer onza, because i was lacking alot when using alternate control scheme, i 100% will notice that the onza will fix this, by doing your method, i was wondering how long it will take for me to get used to the rfmb lfmb buttons from the A button in default.
Hey Arctic i hope you can answer this. I watched this video last week and i have been using alt method ever since which has greatly improved my shotgun skills. However i hate the fact that when you the alt method the looking button which was Y in default is now the push down LS button, which means that if i am having a gnasher battle i always press down the LS button too hard which will disable my shots and just look at the player needing revival. How can i solve this.
Do you use your middle finger to shoot? Or do you alternate your index finger from MFB to trigger?
Arctic where did you get your Onza? Was it online or did you get it at some store?
@RedSatan5 what happens when you have to shoot? Do you move the index finger off to right trigger and right thumb to A (to get ready to wall bounce)?
Do you "Claw" the left side of the controller too or just hold it normal and move your index finger down when you want to aim?
Hey Arctic, I couldnt find an Onza Controllers anywhere in my country. Is it possible to match by using the claw grip on a normal xbox controller.
@Cyberhunterx1 depends on the weapon I have, I typically shoot with Index on Lancer and I switch to middle on shotgun (sometimes) and Pistol/HB always
@hammerofburst im not sure...usually i start strafing if that occurs.
arctic, how reliable is the onza controller? I want to buy one but the reviews always say that it breaks within a month.
thx, i've been waiting for this one!
do you think I should practice in a private match before jumping into a ranked match?
I switched to alternate yesterday and already I've seen improvement.
wow, i want that controller now!
do the analog sticks have the same sensitivity as the microsoft pads?
i usually find that unofficial pads have whack analog sensitivity, and i find they are much less reliable. Can the same be said for the pad you use?
if the answer is no i may have to invest
how long did it take for you to get used to alternate?
ArCtiC, I wanted to thank you. Thanks to your vids I bought an Xbox 360, even after leaving gaming behind a few years ago. I just wanted to thank you!
Loved the video. Just recently received my wings (about last week or so) and decided to switch as well for the exact same reason of hating rolling into walls like a noob. Couldn't agree more with the video. I love the run off of a corner and shoot because it's such a fast shot. The 'A' to 'X' transition is horrible. Sometimes I feel like it doesn't even read my X if i do it too early. However I do feel like the alternate does help wall bouncing and I have mostly gotten used to it. Good Vid.
@Kahgro that's great to hear!
Is there a way to do weapon specific executions with alternate?
@arCtiCvBi So you have to use claw to shotgun at a higher level?
Which finger do you use to shoot?
FINALLY I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG ^_^
Yea Arctic what do you think is the best Headset for Gears of War my budget is about $200 ?
Once again amazing video Arctic
QUESTION
Hey, Great great video! Wat are ur control sensitivities set to?
@arCtiCvBi
Hey i have a question, why does it feel like when i try to wall bounce using the onza it just doesnt work? Like if i were using default it would be perfect but the alt scheme with onza just makes it seem like it doesnt move as fluently.
Thanks..
Hey, do you have a tutorial on strafing?
Oh my, look at the analogs on the Onza. How odd, how long have you been using it? I plan on purchasing one but I'm not sure I should because the analogs look like they could cause problems for me. Plus those two extra buttons. Holy hell man, that would take me more time to get used to than my regular controller with Kontrol Freaks attatched.
@MrLoLiNaBowL I have that issue. I spent the past couple months getting used to the Onza on default. I tried to start using the alternate control scheme today to improve my wallbouncing but half the time when I press the A (right MFB) it doesnt even slide to cover; sometimes regardless of how far or close i am to the wall...
@ItsARevengeThing just switching it up and im sure some people thought otherwise...perhaps "you" didnt need it. It was merely to emphasize the double input sequence
I need to keep strafing in mind when im shotgunning, I do strafe but i never switch it up which i should do love your tips man, i think anyone would find these tips useful even if you know them they help refresh them. keep it up :D
yoo did you get gow ultimate edition? you down to play some publics? your vids got me beastin on people
@KeepItBacon yeah it was the hardest thing for me to get used to during the first couple weeks of switching to the scheme.
I have always used alternate and i love it, but how do you just drop a meat shield like you do with the default? In default i believe you roll to just quickly drop your meat shield, in alternate the only way i drop a meat shield is execution or bag n tag. Dont use meat shield very often cause of this so havnt had much experience trying different things with it.
@DocCeaser I can answer that for ya, The onza is a very reliable controller. the issue that everyone is having is with the onza te adjustable sticks. From my understanding the sticks are using "rubber bands" to adjusts stick tenstion inside the controller. And after a while of putting tension on the sticks they start drifting. But the onza se does not feature the adjustable stick so there are no issues using it.
hey arCtiCvBi.i know u use a alternate scheme n so do i.but i got this problem with it n that is kerb stomping downed player in d middle of shotgun fight n also taking someone elses kill unintentionally as u know execution is done with right thumbstick.is there any ways i could eliminate this issue or perhaps any controllers that got thumb sensivity.any suggestion appreciated.
@arCtiCvBi Why does plat have a ramp? 2:43!
Oh arctic I got some really good weapon swap ideas &' i'm wondering if you can try and get these through. I dont compete no more, but I want to help make competitive gears interesting again.
@JFizzleKid welcome to the family
how mucho does that control cost may you plz put the link of the onza bro and you have a pretty good wallbouncing skill
well hopefully in my upcoming movement tips and tactics episode I can dispel that perceived problem for many of you
@Dj1nky I actually don't push down the LS when I play very much and I imagine you may use the standard controller. My first advice would be to try a different controller, maybe a spare that you have, to see if the analog is not as sensitive. I guess if that doesn't work, you may just have to consciously train yourself to not press it.
@arCtiCvBi what exactly is clawing?
thsi can be done with a normal x box 360 controller?
@19ashley it's not modded, and it's legal for tournament use
would you have made the change without the onza?
so do you press and hold X to run along a wall while in cover?.. i feel like it would be perfect if the only thing they made X do is evade.
@jesterhead9 no I don't claw, I just move my index finger to aim on the left side
I started using alternate sometime in Gears 2 and what I first realised was that I could control when I went into cover. The auto cover effect of the default scheme got me killed alot when trying to get out of a situation where I was outnumbered.
Using alternate also helps control how you roll off corners so you don't do it accidentally.
Generally, I feel the alternate control gives so much better control over your Gear (or Locust).
Finally, wallbouncing is most definitely much more accurate!
@stefanarak I think its when you have to move your hands or fingers all over the controller. or when you have to move your finger thats on one side all the way to the other to do a certain thing.
@xXFairGameXx i have noticed that which typically makes me start strafing more.
wow, well I'm glad my videos had an impact! Welcome back :)
@youmeatfive I found it to be a bit more natural on the Right MFB, but I would assume that it is purely personal preference.
@iCyclones because the wallbounce and roadie run buttons are different which prevents you from rolling when you want to wallbounce. im sure he explained that in the vid
@arCtiCvBi why is it that sometimes a slide u would get on deault, you just stand there on alternate
Just found this once I was going to sleep. :/ Have to watch this in the morning.
@arCtiCvBi can u tell me what ur controler is called
Any tips on getting familiar with alternate faster? I tried playing on alternate today and just couldn't do it I was getting so confused :p
Dude do you have a gnasher tutorial with tricks and tips and stuff??
Ok so here is the deal, I really like alt. control, however i find it hard sometimes to wallbounce on a wall fast like how you displayed in this video. but when I see your Mr. Gnasty videos of you going HAM I see that you can wall-bounce very quickly. For me I will sometimes need to walk to get closer to the wall to wall-bounce on, which makes it harder to get those swift kills..basically how long did it take for you to be able to wallbounce so fast on alternate controls..( I started a week ago)
@360archer Welcome to the family :)
Yeah true. I am also having trouble going from cover to cover with the alternate control scheme.
@Jukenso the biggest hurdle is getting used to the mantling issue
I usually have a problem on alternative when it comes to wall bouncing I have to double tap "a". Don't know if its just my controller being screwy.
jo artic I'm an old school wallbouncer (ther ain't no shool like the old shool XD) i stuck with it through gears 1, 2 and now 3 but what i kinda feel is that strafing is now more effective than in any other gears of war title.I would love to get your opinion on that.
Little tipp if you're L Triggering the shot before you wallbounce you won't roll even when an enemy is right infront of you. If you don't believe test it ^^
I'm playing through campaign on alternate and it really helps get things down.
Another great vid. I'm going to give this a go on my Onza.
@macknbeezy10 It costs the same and in most cases, less than a MS controller. Not sure why you'd be under the assumption that money would be a factor n the Alt control scheme? It can be used as effectively with the regular controller as the Onza.
Wish it was with reg controller instead of Onza. How much is Onza and where to find?
I'm currently on my second which I've been using since November 2011. My first was a prototype and I played with it for roughly 10 months
