as a woman who's been playing all the gears games since 2010, i completely agree that 4 and 5 absolutely suck. i appreciate a very well written story that has characters you can connect with in one way or another (which i did with the og games and no they weren't Anya or Sam or Bernadette). E-Day has me hyped for going back to the Locust War and i'm so excited to see both Dom and Marcus again fighting at each others side. The story is just too good to water it down in the way they've been doing it. BROTHERS til the end
@TheEmperorDoctor exactly. if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. Gears of War was perfectly fine the way it was. the holy woman empire doesn't have to dominate everything.
@@EK-yh1oiwomen may like the later Gears games because of Kait being a main character. But look more and people see all the new characters are bland and generic. But Kait also because they had to get the voice actress that voices all women the same way
@@thewallpersonified3152 😂😂 Please !! Stop it !! Stop lying! Doom and Unreal Tournament were popular and trendy in these years. Stop it !! We played these games in university, you are lying to the wrong guy! Gears have the same engine as Unreal Tournament, similar armored guys were in the 2003 Unreal Tournament promo videos.
I remember when I hosted a Gears of War 3 tournament at home. Three friends had brought over their consoles and 36in flat screens. With fully loaded horde and multiplayer games, adding in pop and pizza, it was the best time.
4 and 5 weren't bad like the 343 halos. The biggest complaint in the community seems to be you played as a woman, but that just seems like a vocal minority of incels whining for no reason.

@a1way5watch1ng9 Gears of War 4 and 5 of garbage. Gears ended with the third one, for me. Once Cliffy left, it became average. Even the graphics became cartoonish. I recall the gaming media mocking the colour pallette, labelling it brown. But that realistic, gritty tone, was Gears. When they started adding robots & the focus was taken away from Marcus, the magic was lost. I don't want Gears 6. I want a complete reboot, with Cliff back in charge. Great video, I completely agree with all your points. Gears was the personification of masculinity, done in a fun way.
Cliff was awful and took a lot of credit that didn’t belong to him. Also a super douche in real life, he was neighbor in nc. Trust me, if you ever meet him, you’ll hate him
Tai was considered 'unbreakable' by many, true...but not even someone like him could be put through Locust torture without coming out the other side wrong... Maria on the other hand got put through an even worse form of the Locust torture where they end with lobotomy via gouging a knife into the base of the upper eyelid so the blade scrapes at the portion of the brain that makes a person who they are alongside other things like basic motor functions; its how they make obedient slaves and why she looks so dessicated by the time Marcus and Dom find her in 2
Tai killed himself because of ptsd he couldn't live with the trauma the locust put him through and doms wife didnt zombify when she changed thats how she actually looked where as before dom basically had rose tinted glasses on.
Tai killed himself because his body was just a carcass. He believed in the afterlife (or reincarnation, i do ;t really remmember) so he "freed his souls" (it was on the comics)
I genuinely miss short, linear, singleplayer campaigns (8-15 hours max on normal difficulty) that are also highly replayable. The problem with modern AAA games is you either get an open world or some kind of RPG with hundreds of hours of padding... or, on the other side of the scale, excessively cinematic, linear campaigns that have only 30-50% of it being actual gameplay. And I hate when the latter is often considered as the same thing as the older, more gameplay-focused games. I love Max Payne 3, but it's certainly an example of just how much things changed across the years from the way games were handled way back in terms of the ratio between story and core gameplay.
Yeah, I was going to play Dishonored 2 but I realized I had a lot of acheievments to get in the first game. I went through the whole game and dlc with energy to play it more as I messed up my ghost run. The game takes less than 10 hours to beat at a casual rate and has lots of replayablity. I tried to play Deus Ex HR but I think its a little too dated or something. I'd like to try the sequel which Ive seen on sale for 5$. These "immersive sim" games they call them are superb imo. They respect your time and have excellent gameplay.
@@iBishopEsquire, I'm almost done with Human Revolution, and, while I agree that certain gameplay mechanics are dated (as some quick examples, tap to aim with no options for holding a button down for it... or the janky gunplay), I still think it holds up really well. Pacing is fantastic story-wise, especially! Altho it still does take a while to get into immersive sims since I would still usually prefer more straightforward games with engaging combat as the core pillar... but that's more of a preference thing.
With companies like Sweet Baby Inc basically having a death grip over the throats of Microsoft and other companies, we might never get a good gears game again.
Considering the events of the last week, I'd say it's the other way around, where Microsoft has a death grip on the studios under its umbrella. Including The Coalition, Gears of War's current development team. Whether or not Sweet Baby Inc has any real power over a game's success, is inconsequential --- Microsoft doesn't guarantee job security, either way. And I imagine morale has plummeted quite drastically, as a result. There _is,_ however, a possibility The Coalition has immunity, being a steward of one of Microsoft's flagship franchise, just like 343i, but there's no assurance of this.
Gears of War E-day just dropped a trailer and it honestly looks like a return to form. Somber music, gritty violence, horrors of Armageddon and most importantly Dominic and Marcus back together.
@intellectic9155 They have said it will be a 'modern take' on their relationship and have talked about them being youthful and vulnerable. So yeh I'm a little worried lol.
Tai Kaliso wasn’t turned into a Locust, he was being tortured by Scorge to the point of irreparable trauma, and that happens before we found Maria living the longer lasting effects of that same torture, just a little correction
@@taintedgoose9138 yeaaaah, I’m also a little bit confused about his comments about 4 & 5 being “femenine and being about motherhood and mother daughter relationship” when the relationship between Reina and Kait is blatantly ignored and Kait shuts it off every time she’s asked about it, I’m definitely not a fan of both games but I think he was kinda being salty about Kait being a main character (which, she’s awful, dull, uninteresting but definitely doesn’t make the game “femenine” at all)
Yo i think you need to go and play the games again lol. Maria was tortured and Lobotomised, Tai got his mind broken by torture he wasnt being turned into a locust
This game was way ahead of its time, still holds up today in 60fps on newer consoles. I still play with people online, it sucks when games are so bad now you go back to the good stuff. Im 33 now and I think I grew up in the best gaming era, halo 2/3, gears 1, cod 3 and 4, battlefield 3/4....etc
“I didn’t play gears until 2023” God I love it when it someone discovers peak gaming late in life. A testament to the quality. No hype. No nostalgia. Proof that the game was PEAK
He definitely missed out on the multiplayer side of things though. And even though the games do hold up it is a completely different experience to play them when they first came out and just be blown away.
I was a big fan of the Gears of War games. Played 1 - Judgement. I went on an hiatus for a while cuz of adult life. I returned and picked up the latest game in the series; gears 5. And I am shocked by how everything is different. The writing is bad too. Only pro I can think of is the gore is still fine
I feel like games like this will never come back, but with videos like this makes me feel great, knowing I wasn’t the only one around the world that experienced such a game.
Gears was the Perfect way to hop in to that gen of gaming. Had a 360 in the house because the ps3 came out later, but this is the type of game that sells consoles. It was such a different industry back then.
I used to play Gears of War 1/2/3 on Gamebattles and it was literally my childhood/entire teen hood lol. Probably thousands of hours invested into it. I was so ready for Gears 4 but I lost all interest from there on out. Idk man, just something about it. It wasn’t the same Gears of War anymore. Same happened with Halo. These series’ both died after 3.
we can let it sink with this Marcus left his post to save his dad, costing lives and being put in jail, Dom never questioned him for that, in fact followed him to it He sucker punched Hoffman doing that, and even despite his anger for that and him leaving his duty, he still has Marcus on the field on the first game Baird and Dom hated each other in the firt game, but never was a factor to stop doing their job Dizzy was a stranded completely and considering how much they hate the COG, he still joined so his family could be secured Michael Barrik had his hatred towards the COG for ruining his life, and he still joined as he thought someone had to get things done Even Judgement, Loomis wanted Kilo squad dead for using the missile unauthorized, and when they are overrun by locust, they still help each other to take down Karn Gears 5 has Kait and Del hating on JD for shooting protesters who clearly were menacing his life (and as far as I know was an order from Jinn to begin), and the event why he leaved the COG, his supposed best friends shit talking him a whole episode despite showing he would sacrifice himself for them a chapter earlier, there is no loyalty whatsoever
From what i remember. There was a huge shift in third person shooters once RE4 came out. While it is true that Gears pioneered third person cover shooting, RE4 pioneered the over the shoulder precision aiming camera which at the time i saw many games adopting into their design. At the time the Games i noticed such as the first Uncharted, Dead Space, MGS4, GTAIV, and several others started using RE4's precision aiming mechanics, including gears itself.
Yes RE4 was one of the first 3rd person shooters, but Gears popularized the cover based shooter. Last of Us and Uncharted both borrowed this from Gears. Games like GTA 4 you can see didn't borrow Gears mechanics and were worse for it.
A lot of the people in the coalition who were taking the franchise in that direction on 4 and 5 are no longer there. So the studio is now moving to do E-day before they can figure out what to do with 6.
I remember playing the prequel game gears tactics and refunding after 20 min because they had a side objective to save human prisoners. For those who don’t know a major plot point of Gears 2 is that Locust all the sudden started taking prisoners and processing them for god knows what. This is shocking since the Locust notoriously don’t take prisoners, and this entire mystery leads to finding out what happens to Dom’s wife. That entire thing is just retconned because the Devs didn’t play any of the older games and don’t give a shit about the lore.
What? Tye didn't get turned into a Locust what are you talking about? Hahaha. He killed himself cause of the brutal torture he went through and wanted to put himself out of his misery
Gears of war will forever hold a special place in my heart. the music, the dialogue, the story, the gameplay, gears 1-3 is just perfect. i sometimes go back and replay gears 1 and 3 and it never gets old. the comradery is some of the best ive ever seen in any game. its so damn realistic especially if youve served . my mom took me to a toys r us when i was like 10-14 years old and let me pick an M rated game. it was either Afro Samurai or Gears of War 1. i chose gears. we get home, turn the xbox and start playing. that ominous title screen will never leave my mind. my hears all the cussing and sees all the blood and knew she messed up buying me this game😂 the Berserker haunted me for years till ingot older and just laughed at it. i even know lines from the game like the back of my hand
14:23 i disagree. what makes the game good is that you do feel the burden of orders when they come from command. whenever you have to take a long route, redo a faulty mission, go back down a dark and eerie path in a storm with krill,, etc, your thought process is the same as a soldier who has to suck it up and get it done, while the commanding officers and anya sit behind their desks.
I have to admit, your review is spot on. I played gears on split screen with the my brother growing up and it was incredible. The game was way beyond its time and I remember being in awe about the dynamics. In split screen I truly felt dependent on ensuring my brother would have my back because the AI was so good. The story line so immersive, when Dom died it literally made me teary eye. It was incredible experience, the emotion and character building was amazing. Gears 4/5 felt generic trying to use the gears of war title as a means of credibility. It felt very flat to me, lacked completely connection with the characters.
Back when these games came out, they also had very fun online PvP modes similar to cod/halo like team deathmatch, executioner, king of the hill, which were a lot of fun and very competitive. Gears 2 and 3 also introduced horde mode and beast mode which are a ton of fun as well. This added a lot of replay-ability beyond the story modes. It was honestly such a great series, and it's too bad they couldn't make more games like the first three to keep the franchise alive.
My friend used to always get his ass kicked by "The Bolter" enemy type. Im like, "Son!!!!! U gettin yo ass kicked by a dude with a pistol! Wtf you doin son?!" We all be down, hes got 1 guy to kill and chokes...like the damn 92-95 Buffalo bills.
When Anya held Marcus back after Dom’s sacrifice in the third game is when I knew the franchise was done. I knew it was going to be female focused after that
It didn't go wrong anywhere. The trilogy ended in full glory. If anything, it's the gaming corpo industry that is not able to leave IPs alone and milks them to no end.
That trailer for gears 1 was amazing. The online, crab walking, Hosting Over power, MLG battles… man what a great time to be alive and a kid with no responsibility with all your buddies and shiiiite talking after a match. I’ll never forget how amazing these 3 games where. I still put beating General RAMM on insane on my resume, that’s a life achievement.
8:06 From the PlayStation side of an isle I feel the same way about God of War games. The original was gory as hell but compared the pussified reboot series. This is an industry-wide problem.
Gears of war 1 is my all time favorite game and I adore the OG trilogy to death, making me a fan. Even if games like 5 & Judgment aren't as good, I still enjoy them.
I believe that Judgment had a lot of good ideas that were implemented unevenly in a way that made it hard for people to appreciate its genuinely good parts while its bad ideas stood out like sore thumbs. The story was excellent (even though it retconned things in the lore didn’t need retconning to produce an equally good story) and the way the challenge system played into it was actually a brilliant idea from a narrative standpoint. The problems there lie in how poorly many of the challenges are implemented and how its map design in the campaign made things unnecessarily punishing to players on the higher difficulties. As for its bad parts, the control scheme change and changes to the effectiveness of weapons like the Gnasher, I agree that these were mistakes that are jarring for people jumping from one game to the next. I believe that a PC port and modding tools would allow players to fix the worst mistakes in Judgment as such that the intended experience would be able to shine through.
Played the gears serie like...dozens of time. It's interesting that you bring the difficulty up. Back then, the achievement linked to finishing the game in insane difficulty was very coveted. Most people needed to play it with a friend to get it. I remember telling some people online how I managed to finish it solo on insane and...they just wouldn't believe me. In the collector version, the team explains that their goal at first was to make a horror game. Then they settled on a "dark-war" game. You can see a lot of disturbing scenes through the first specifically. Those actually added to the heavy feeling of war. Secondly, Cliff explained that he wanted to get away from all the classical tropes of scifi games like yellow zebras on the ground, spaceships coming from the sky or hyper futuristic ennemies. This is why we had helicopters, underground ennemies and beast-mounted weaponry. This helped to get immersed even more in the world. And they even managed to make the sequel being better! My only regret is that I can't play them on PC since I don't have consoles.
Gears of War 4... Maybe it's me? The dialogue/writing was hollow. Felt like it was created, just for money? Gears of War 3 finished the story, basically. But nope, The Swarm had to be a thing. With nothing new offered. Bring back the horror element and fear/pressure in cover based crossfire.
Gears 4 and 5 were like Dom seeds, completely fucked up. I remember first playing GoW(2) in 2009 and i loved it so much i played it 1000s of times. From that point i bought every single part and thought that after not so perfect "Judgement" they'll surely snap out.. Boy was i wrong, althou latest trailer for E-day gave me goosebumps and if it delivers i may buy xbox just to come back to the serie again
@@39patrykos Relatable. Me and a buddy first played Gears of War 2. We killed it in Horde Mode and the campaign. Gears of War 3 was when we hit Versus Mode. Good times. And then right, Judgment came out... It was experimental and did not work for most. Especially the "two piecing". Balance was off horribly. 4 and 5 felt like cash grabs. The Coalition milking the cow, basically. With E-Day, I hope it's not like most, Battlefield 2042 for example. Built up the hype, but bombed on delivery.
@@jaredsmith4919 That just hits different. It's hard to find such a great games that also feature Coop nowadays. It's been some time since Gears 5 was released so im trying to think of E-day not as Bf42, but as Cod Ww2 or Bf1 that actually gave us what we wanted. I really hope that Coalition realized how much we loved this Good ol' story
@@39patrykos Most you may have to dig for, that fly under the radar. Indie devs most of the time. My opinions differ there with those two titles. Usually because of age and/or preference. To say Dead Space 2 or Borderlands 2 when they released. Complete improvement, can't really say there were too many negatives. Back on point. It feels like Halo Reach to me? A lot of people loved it? But going from Halo 3 to Reach felt like a downgrade. And it made some sense since it was a prequel. But doesn't have to be? It's tricky but possible. For E-Day the story of Dom and Marcus could be great if handled with care? The Locust Drones being beefed up could be a welcome challenge? Though weapons and gameplay I hope they don't try to manipulate it too much?
gears 1 and 3 to this day are my favorite multi-player experiences its crazy that a 3rd person shooter could have a mechanism that seems so minor aka wall bouncing and canceling leading to perhaps the most high skill ceiling and intensive movement mechanic I've ever seen, and I have thousands of hours in cs surf and tf2 rocket and sticky jumper maps. there's just nothing else quite like being a good gears player on a movement tech level 👌 go back and check out some of those old essence montages and thank me later 👍
13:01 that was some nasty editing right there 😂 10/10 video. As someone who has been playing Gears non stop since '07 (just finished a 3 hour session of Gears5) your analysis (especially about the story and male bonding) is spot on. Love the video brother 💪🏾
When it comes to the original GOW games it's like you said, they're about brotherhood. Soldiers who start out as strangers who grow to die for each other. Something that E-Day has a lot potential for with showing how dom and Marcus learned to become brothers in arms. With Gears 4 and 5 the tone is completely off compared to the others. No one cares about JD and his dad issues with Marcus or kait discovering her identity of being related to the locust queen, or del just being... there, he doesn't really contribute anything to the plot aside from being the best friend. also the writing is just not right, it's trying way too hard to be like a buddy cop joss Whedon script. I wonder if they'll ever make a gears 6? I don't think many people would care if they abandoned it, it would be kinda funny actually.
There IS a revice mechanic in gears 1, it's just only in co-op, the ally AI doesn't know how to do it. It was really meant for 2 player coop, back when couch coop was still a thing on console. Those sections where you split up are a perfect example, in SP you pick one of them and just do that, in coop you have to go both ways at the same time, so you're left without your buddy for a short while and have to change your tactics, and it's fun to see who can get through it first.
This was a really great watch! I'm in agreement pretty much all the way, and having played the hell out of the first three games in the Gears franchise back as the released it still only just now fully registered with me just how much Gears of War really did change up the entire gaming industry. After that first one came out it became the game design template for other devs making third-person shooters to work off of. It would have been easy for those guys to coast through a lax dev cycle for the 2 sequels but they still kept at it with the refinements and improving the narrative writing chops each time. Like that scene where Dom reunites with his wife, with the camera panning around them to first show how Dom was seeing her as he remembered so the gut punch hits hard when reality subtly creeps in to reveal the utterly broken state of her. The why they executed that allowed us to experience that loss with Dom in each moment as hope turned to dread and reached it's climax that was the horror in the tragedy. The scene plays out pretty fast but damn did it leave an impression! Great vid once again! I've been subbed for a little while now but only finally got around to leaving a comment, so let me say you're content is consistently on point and you have my appreciation my good man!
I was about 5 years old when i played Gears of war 1 it was my first video game and it has stuck with me ever since Im 18 now heading to college and im still in love with the franchise even if the new installments are not as good as previous ones
Watching this after the trailer released yesterday, Gears 1 is what brought me to Xbox. I got it for Christmas and my brother and I played it together on split screen. It’s still my favourite gaming memory to this day, it’s my favourite franchise of all time. Seeing Dom save Marcus in the trailer yesterday brought tears to my eyes. All those memories with my brother back and nothing will ever take those away. This franchise is more than a game to me, I’m so happy they’re going back to their roots with E-Day
Gears of Woke 6 was a self telling story that needed no release. If they wanted a female character, should have kept Anya alive. Its new to us but nothing beats sticking it to the broken; like rolling a red-stained carpet over a flaccid rainbow.
I played Gears 3 probably x10. Featuring women was cool . But making it about women and being the main character reaks of that modern audience Bullshit. On top of other problems the newer ganes had
Going to be controversial to say, but it was at its best when it was just the dude bro shooter. They added some emotion to add more depth to the story and characters in 2 onward but it was still just gritty gore and testosterone. Then, the whole tone and shooter changed. The devs moved around and changed. Cliffy B changed. Then, the whole franchise changed for the worst trying to appeal to everyone and forgetting the core attraction to the series. There was nothing wrong with just being that hardcore dude bro shooter, but like Halo 4, Gears 4 onward tried chasing trends and culture zeitgeists and lost its charm.
Gears 3 sucked too, trivialized a lot of boss enemies and changed the shooting to more cod like with half the ammo and two held weapons that had to constantly be swapped vs planning and conserving ammo like 1 and 2
Listening to the Background music sends colds across my body its insane to think how far games have declined im playing gears of war 1 now the original 360 version and its just so unbelievable good
Gears 1 & 2 were the best for me good times back then. When I think smooth gunplay games I think halo 1,2,3,odst gears 1,2,3 and pretty much destiny. Movement and gunplay was just different.
I’m pushing back against one comparison. You said Last of us copied gears but imo Last of us/uncharted revolutionized cover shooters by taking away snapping to cover and just integrating character animation and cover. Which most games do now instead of what gears did. It’s outdated now how gears cover shooting works.
Gears 1 changed games for me. It was Gritty, violent, looked incredible, and had a brutal Multiplayer. 8 Rnds, execution. You die, you sit out the round. Gears 2 was even more epic. Horde mode for hours. Sadly, I think Gears 3 moved away from what made 1 and 2 great. It introduced TDM to compete with trends at the time, it introduced paid cosmetic skins, it was so bright and colourful. I still.played the hell out of it, but I missed the dark black blood and violence from the 1st 2 games.. I enjoyed Gears so much, I even have a tattoo of it. A simple COG.
Not to worry we got masculinity coming back now on gears E day. No women bs just dudes fighting a war as it should be. Nothing against women gears 3 had women and it was appropriate. Anya and Sam were beloved characters.
All we have so far is a trailer. Essentially a very well done advertisement. There’s nothing that says they won’t push the same crap that every other game does when the game finally releases.
You are easily swayed. We’ve seen the bait and switch move before. Most recently Stellar Blade where they changed the game after it launched through game patches after promising that they would not do that.
@@majorgear1021Someone went over that (ShortFatOtaku) and it’s not as clear as people thought. Because there’s still very obviously sexy costumes in-game. Long story short, it seems they “borrowed” real life outfits without getting licenses, and changed them enough to avoid a lawsuit. And I think the blood changed either because the trailer was an earlier build, or because it’s based on whether or not you’re wearing the “nude” costume. He has a summary at the end if you want to skip to that.
if you watched the xbox showcase, 95% of the games were women based. whether it was skateboarding, warriors, assassins, shooters, the video game industry and hollywood are in shambles. also, we're all sexists, nothing wrong with that.
I mean to be honest some of it messed up, but I don’t mind it because I got to think about it gears of war 4 and five is basically learning more about how the locust came to be and what happened finding out that Kate is a granddaughter of queen mirror some things could be better but I believe it’s just about giving it a chance multiplayer could be better. I don’t mind a campaign, but it’s cool to see how the story is coming along putting pieces of it throughout the whole entire war series.
Gears of War actually did not create cover-based shooter genre, only popularized it. The first shooter with cover-based mechanic is Winback series by Omega Force in 1999. But the cover-based mechanics that we knew today was first introduced by Namco USA's Kill Switch in 2003.
I tried getting my son into this game, but it was too hard for him. He’s only 6, but he’s super good at video games. Now that he’s played GTA 5, I think the cover might be easier this time around.
You know whats funny? They decide to make a female character and suddenly the game has to be all soft. They could have created a female character and explored how she faces the horrors of a war and come through as a soldier. Different from the way of men, but still badass and believable. In the same way that the character you mentioned is a grunt but he still cares about his wife.
The main problem with the newer gears is that they forget what makes gears gears. Their to focused on getting more people to play gears then just making a gears game. Just look how to changed the name it went from Gears of WAR to Gears. Each new Gears game is dumbing down the gore and violence. Just look at the Gears 5 gameplay the blood looks like jellO. Going back to OG gears 1 and 2 that shit was violent. I remember taking the time to look at a locust corpse after I chain sawed them. Seeing guts and bone coming out and thinking Nice. Remember how in Gears 1 Carmine got shot in the face and you saw a big hole in his head then his lifeless body hits the ground? In Gears 5 I cant even think of a scene being that dark or violent. Now you think okay the violence is toned down that means the story should be good right? No its not. Gears 4 was alright but, not as good. I take as a decent first Gears game made by the new studio. Then Gears 5 stop focusing on JD then mind you previous game made him the main character and the prime focus for the trailers. To focus on Kate. Yes Kate the one that no one really cared for some did do to the mystery at the end of 4 and her mom dying. Not only that they try to make every single way to make JD look like a dick. Bold move for them to do unfortunately for a good few people some people liked JD now your making him an ass of himself. Not only that but, Gears 5 multiplayer sucked due to them focusing on microtransactions . Horde mode was a shadow of its former self the only cool mode might have been Hive . I barely remember the multiplayer in Gears 4 and 5 thats how dull it was. Not to mention if you wanted to character skin you have to get lucky and spend a good bit of money to get it. Older gears game you unlock by challenges or just got it from the store. Which is kinda crappy but, atleast I did have to spend 50+ to unlock UIR skin. The only point I disagree with the video is the part about women. Im not a sjw just wanted to say its fine to have females in gears but, dont make like Kate. There are plenty of females in the gears books that are just as badass as finx and it doenst pull the Mary Sue shit like Kate. Oh just thought about it the part of "Following orders" its not really a gears theme because in the books marcus didnt follow orders and got a whole city killed due to his actions. Still a good video on the subject but, I would have added that the Collation is just trying to appease to the market then Gears fans.
Nobody cares I don't think that's entirely true because Kate what's the most played character in MP I don't know why it wasn't going to go that way in the first place because at the end of gears 4 we all knew it was going to be her story moving forward Marcus storyline dies in gears 3 Kate connection to the locusts is more interesting to me than JD storyline so why would they make JD the main character nothing to tell on his part
Same thing happened with killzone on playstation, kz2 turned the gritty realism and high recoil intense hardcore shooter action to a 12 then had to codify it even after selling like hotcakes
This is how I know you hardly played the game. The violence isn't toned down at all, and you spent most of your comment whining about playing as a female character. People who actually play the game use kaits character in multiplayer a lot, so it's just nonsense incel whining.
As a xbox fan I don't like gears 4 and gears 5 and that gears of war is dungeon like something /gears of war for me is gears 1/2/3 even gears tactics is better than 4 and 5
The original trilogy was about the bond of Brotherhood through bloodshed. Even after the death, you can clearly see that the story of Gears 1-3 isn't about Marcus Fenix alone, but his and Doms brotherhood. Dom dies with still about 25% of 3 left, but he is still very much part of it as Marcus struggles losing his oldest and closest friend, and remember when he stabs Myrrahh, he says "That was for Dom." Gears 4 had promise, it just needed a good follow through. Gears 5 was where it became unsaveable by switching to focus on Kait instead of JD having the torch passed to him. Add the fact that they really drove a wedge into the "brotherhood" theme be having Del turn on him at the beginning of the game and then the choice which leaves us with one of them dead. Gears 6 is either doomed, or never going to happen because of that.
One thing I do wanna say: I don't have an issue with a female lead as some of the comments here imply. Gears lore is so deep I wouldn't mind the focus not be on Marcus and Co. for a bit, same as Halo with MC (Reach and ODST was great without him) Kait's biggest issue (and new Delta squad) is she's just doesn't really have a personality that sticks out. If she had, say Baird or Cole or even Sam's attitude, I would care a lot more when things went wrong for her. Give her Fahz's personality! I cared more about him than Kait seeing her mother. She also was a brat at times in 5. What she needs is her own "Cole train on the mic in gears 2" scene and I would love her a lot more Also even though I never played Gears 4-5 on insane, I will say Gears 1 is pretty easy on insane. It only got hard to me during the Raam fight (pause)
Been a huge fan of Gears since I was in 5th grade when it came out. If you haven’t tried it yet, Gears Tactics is also an amazing addition to the series with the more gritty boots on the ground brotherhood feel to it.
Gears of war was so damn impressive in terms of visuals back when it released. The cover based gameplay was a breath of fresh air and fun to play with friends. Enemies were interesting and fun to fight. I was invested early on and it kept me hooked all the way through gears of war 3. Gears of war 2 was my favorite among the trilogy but really enjoyed all of them.
I always had the feeling that Gears 5 was well received by the community after the fourth game had a rough time. It was clear for me from the start that the franchise needed kind of a new direction after the first trilogy and the very mediocre Judgment. I actually enjoyed the fifth game, especially the Next-Gen-Version looking and playing great. Gears of War is at least facing similar problems God of War on the PlayStation had. Both franchises don't shine with a wide range of Gameplay features and a rich, deep story. God of War is now going a complete different direction while The Coalition tries to stick when it comes to the roots of the series while trying new things. They are at least doing a better job in my opintion compared to 343 Industries with Halo which is currently a train wreck, Gears is miles away from this derailed train.
as a woman who's been playing all the gears games since 2010, i completely agree that 4 and 5 absolutely suck. i appreciate a very well written story that has characters you can connect with in one way or another (which i did with the og games and no they weren't Anya or Sam or Bernadette). E-Day has me hyped for going back to the Locust War and i'm so excited to see both Dom and Marcus again fighting at each others side. The story is just too good to water it down in the way they've been doing it.

@TheEmperorDoctor exactly. if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. Gears of War was perfectly fine the way it was. the holy woman empire doesn't have to dominate everything.

Honestly.. I enjoyed 5 a lot. It had a great story and MP was decent enough to be consistent with it. Nothing however will top Gears 1 and 3 MP.

Gears ended with the third one, for me. Once Cliffy left, it became average. Even the graphics became cartoonish. I recall the gaming media mocking the colour pallette, labelling it brown.
Modern games are designed around influencers on TikTok in all streaming platforms.
With companies like Sweet Baby Inc basically having a death grip over the throats of Microsoft and other companies, we might never get a good gears game again.
Exactly
Considering the events of the last week, I'd say it's the other way around, where Microsoft has a death grip on the studios under its umbrella. Including The Coalition, Gears of War's current development team. Whether or not Sweet Baby Inc has any real power over a game's success, is inconsequential --- Microsoft doesn't guarantee job security, either way. And I imagine morale has plummeted quite drastically, as a result. There _is,_ however, a possibility The Coalition has immunity, being a steward of one of Microsoft's flagship franchise, just like 343i, but there's no assurance of this.

Marcus left his post to save his dad, costing lives and being put in jail, Dom never questioned him for that, in fact followed him to it
He sucker punched Hoffman doing that, and even despite his anger for that and him leaving his duty, he still has Marcus on the field on the first game
Baird and Dom hated each other in the firt game, but never was a factor to stop doing their job
Dizzy was a stranded completely and considering how much they hate the COG, he still joined so his family could be secured
Michael Barrik had his hatred towards the COG for ruining his life, and he still joined as he thought someone had to get things done
Even Judgement, Loomis wanted Kilo squad dead for using the missile unauthorized, and when they are overrun by locust, they still help each other to take down Karn
Gears 5 has Kait and Del hating on JD for shooting protesters who clearly were menacing his life (and as far as I know was an order from Jinn to begin), and the event why he leaved the COG, his supposed best friends shit talking him a whole episode despite showing he would sacrifice himself for them a chapter earlier, there is no loyalty whatsoever
I simply appreciate that my peak of gaming was experienced during Gears 1 - 3, Halo 1 - 3, MGS 1 - 4 and COD MW1 - MW3.
There was loads of cover based shooters on PC well before gears, I guess it lead to more console clones but it was far from the first to do it well

A lot of the people in the coalition who were taking the franchise in that direction on 4 and 5 are no longer there. So the studio is now moving to do E-day before they can figure out what to do with 6.

When i had to pay for loot boxes in four to MAYBE get a character in a limited time i quit this shit.

I also think the original Gears games, especially the 1st, were pretty scary. I remember playing Gears 1 and the Beserker part used to terrify me!
gears 1 and 3 to this day are my favorite multi-player experiences its crazy that a 3rd person shooter could have a mechanism that seems so minor aka wall bouncing and canceling leading to perhaps the most high skill ceiling and intensive movement mechanic I've ever seen, and I have thousands of hours in cs surf and tf2 rocket and sticky jumper maps. there's just nothing else quite like being a good gears player on a movement tech level 👌 go back and check out some of those old essence montages and thank me later 👍
Man this is so accurate. It wasn’t just gears that got soft. It’s the whole gaming industry just went woke and gay at the same time. 😂😂😂
Playing GOW1 on insane until 4am with my buddy, priceless, we called it Gears and Beers!
“More like ten shitloads”
Only god of war has pulled this off well imo
Gears 3 had female characters but still had that bro theme
Gears 3 sucked too, trivialized a lot of boss enemies and changed the shooting to more cod like with half the ammo and two held weapons that had to constantly be swapped vs planning and conserving ammo like 1 and 2
GOW 3 is the best one.
Listening to the Background music sends colds across my body its insane to think how far games have declined im playing gears of war 1 now the original 360 version and its just so unbelievable good
Microsoft will not return because all these companies are too focused on “inclusion” instead of making good games.
Imo Gears has it right with the sticking to cover. I love Uncharted and Last of Us Multiplayer but the feeling of sticking to cover felt amazing.
What went wrong? A different company was formed to handle the Series and they sucked at it. Microsoft has a history of doing this (Halo anyone?)
And they’re about to do it with Fable now, lol.
@@mrshmuga9 Fable been trash.
The first gears of war was by far the most challenging Gears game by far. Me and my homie spent hours trying to beat RAAM on heroic.
I doubt they will go completely back to roots with it though.
I'm sure they will add some cringe.
Don't be so hopefully, little child. The Coalition haven't made a good game yet and are all in on the modern day shit.
Forgot how hard the soundtrack went in Gears 1
if you watched the xbox showcase, 95% of the games were women based. whether it was skateboarding, warriors, assassins, shooters, the video game industry and hollywood are in shambles. also, we're all sexists, nothing wrong with that.
He stated nobody played killswitch especially in comparison to geaes
He literally said that in the video.. Lol
There were female characters in Gears 3. Those characters being Anya and Sam
I just finished the trilogy again last night. Still so much better than what we have nowadays.
@@a1way5watch1ng9 nice bait
@@kingofkingsohio dumbest logic ever, tryhards ALWAYS pick the female characters for a smaller hitbox not bc they like them lmaoo😂💀
Gears of war 2006 multiplayer sniper headshot was a masterpiece of gore
Gears lore is so deep I wouldn't mind the focus not be on Marcus and Co. for a bit, same as Halo with MC (Reach and ODST was great without him)
Kait's biggest issue (and new Delta squad) is she's just doesn't really have a personality that sticks out. If she had, say Baird or Cole or even Sam's attitude, I would care a lot more when things went wrong for her. Give her Fahz's personality! I cared more about him than Kait seeing her mother. She also was a brat at times in 5.
What she needs is her own "Cole train on the mic in gears 2" scene and I would love her a lot more
Also even though I never played Gears 4-5 on insane, I will say Gears 1 is pretty easy on insane. It only got hard to me during the Raam fight (pause)
I hope Gears Of War E-Day lives up to the good old days
bro misgendered the Berserker smh
Been a huge fan of Gears since I was in 5th grade when it came out. If you haven’t tried it yet, Gears Tactics is also an amazing addition to the series with the more gritty boots on the ground brotherhood feel to it.
Does Winback not count as a progenitor of the 3rd person cover-based shooter?
No
@@majorgear1021 Then what game does?
Well the difference is god of war also came back as good as before with even more depth, gears didn't
The Coalition is much better than 343 Industries... that is an indisputable fact.
