    The good think about having a Filipina wife is she never lets me get taken for a financial ride. When we go out she negociates the price on transportation such as trikes, taxis ect. She always lets me know what is a good price and where we can get it cheaper. I am thankful we never get ripped off. My girl is tight with money but we are always doing things. She knows how the game is played. The first thing I realized is live like a Filipino in most things. You can still splurge once in a while.

    I've been to the Phils many many times ( and lived there too ) I've experienced the province life and big city life. It all boils down to it can be as expensive or as cheap as you make it....when your girl says buy me this or take me here too often there's a magic word....NO ! If she can't accept that then she's the wrong one for you anyway, show her the door. It's not your job to support her family either....help them now and then sure, but not support them. And the Philippines is one of the CHEAPEST places to live in the world....where can you rent a house on the beach for 400-500 usd a month....in the US to rent a house on the beach it would be 1000 usd a DAY....not a month ! Try to get a taxi in the US for 3-5 dollars, they'll laugh at you but it's common in the Phils. To say it's not cheap in the Phils is simply not true, it's as cheap ( or expensive ) as you want it to be. The key word is knowing how to say NO. Great channel Calvin ! Keep up the good work.

      I agree with this statement and my lady negotiates all our prices, cabs, trikes, hotels and souvenirs. Now, when I retire I will be okay with my modest retirement income stream coming in but even with that, I will always put money aside that even my wife will now know about. And I already have a budget (a damn good amount) monthly for her to budget monthly so she could never complain. If she does complain, that will be the time I will bow out and let her live her life the best way she sees fit without me. Her family? Nah, as someone mentioned we will help family from time to time but no one gets a steady stream of money from me.

      Everything you said is true most especially the magic word NO, when she asks for something you can't afford, or simply if you don't like to, be firm with your NO and if she doesn't like it, tell her your door is open. Helping her family, never ever start doing it. If you do, it won't be the last they'll expect you to give and it would be a problem. At the end of the day, it is the expats' decision. You give, IT IS ON YOU. You allowed to be used. Don't complain. It is a money-trap, based only on the expats decisions or what the expats would ALLOW to happen. It is not something that cannot be avoided especially even before deciding to marry a Filipina, and after hearing many Don'ts, Negatives, and advices from fellow expats' TH-cam channel.

    This is one your best videos, Calvin. When you're married to a Filipina, they will test your spending limits. They are on their phones constantly, gossiping, comparing you with other foreign couples, looking for what's on sale, shopping, etc. Asking for more money for some party, or other unnecessary item. They will NEVER forget any offer to spend more than the budget you set, so monitor carefully what you say. They will remind you, if you decide later that you cannot afford it. If you leave extra cash in your wallet or place they can get to it, they will 'borrow' it to spend on something you weren't anticipating. It may be that we set up their expectations early on. If you're the good guy and want to be the generous husband, they will ride that for all it's worth. Ultimately, then, to put something aside, you have to do it without their knowledge. Beware, too, that you may be shamed for not doing what others do. Then so be it.

    Reasons why foreigners spend too much: 1) Too much money. You have a lump sum or a bonanza, and after a lifetime of pinching pennies, you go wild. 2) Overestimate cheapness. This is your point. You think everything is cheaper, but it's not. Taxis are a hell of a lot cheaper, as is medical care, but a Toyota is not. Even shampoo and toothpaste are cheaper in the US. 3) Ignorance. I've seen Koreans pay 50 pesos for a 15 peso bottled water, no questions asked. 4) Recklessness. "It's only a peso." Or 50, 1200, 7,000, etc. You have to learn to value every peso. 5) Family. "Lolo is in the hospital." "Junjun needs shoes." "The family needs rice." "Bong wants to buy a cow," etc.

      @KayleManning-qo8vw 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I believe too much money being used to help the girlfriend's or wife's family is VERY STRESSFUL. That is why when foreigners say the word "paradise" to describe the Philippines, I shake my head. As a Filipino, our country is not a paradise, it only is if you've got millions and not having too many to help or asking for help. Bottomline: IT IS UP TO THE FOREIGNERS TO GIVE OR HELP. Not even their Filipina wives should be able to decide or influence the foreigner husband unless it's her money which in all cases, is not. If the foreigner helps or gives money, it is the foreigner alone that has the blame. NOT THE FILIPINA, NOT THE PHILIPPINES. It is Important to think of this help or money factor before deciding to marry a poor Filipina.

    • @JuanDiaz-jo1rw
      @JuanDiaz-jo1rw 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @KayleManning-qo8vw Is not that easy as just saying it's the foreigners to blame. Because even back in the US or other countries, in case of an emergency, when a person truly loves their partners, we always help whenever we can. With that said, it is always not easy to just simply say no. Also, there are other factors here in the Philippines apart from the finance that truly add to the stress, and that is the gossiping here. And that's the Philippines to blame, not the foreigners. I have been here long enough to see Filipinos always fighting umong each other and always jealous about what the neighbors have. Here in the Philippines, it is really hard to even make real friends because you are always accused of having a mistress or other things that are not actually happening. When foreigners come here, they want to relax and enjoy retirement. Not to be involved in other people's problems. Most Filipinos, sad to say, create the problems but then want to blame the foreigners. I myself have already made friends with the Police because of how many times I have had to go down to explain something. Also, when you say poor Filipinos, to be honest. Whether they work or not, the average Filipino is poor. Because even people who have been to college are struggling here. The average salary here is
      php350 per day. That is super low. But money should never be the means for principals, morals, and respect.

    A fool and his money are soon parted. Very wise words. A recent study said that 37% of American families can’t come up with $400 in an emergency. If you’re moving to the Philippines for purely financial reasons, I would think that you’re part of that 37%. Sometimes you spend more than you make, but long term you need to be spending less than you make and be putting money into savings for emergencies. If you’re living like a “30 day” millionaire in the Philippines you’re going to go broke very quickly.

    I hear you. I did a wage regression back to 1980 and found my purchasing power in the Navy was extremely powerful compared to today. Wages have been deliberately suppressed by Government policy, our taxes subsidise fossil fuel enterprises, and make up for Corporations offshoring their profits, which means our taxes go up and the major tax burden is carried by the shrinking middle class. The net effect is that every man and woman in Australia should be earning an extra $30,000 a year but for wage suppression. Our inflation officially runs at 7% which is not as bad as the UK, but still our real food inflation is around 16%, it is hard not to have a heart attack after a simple visit to the supermarket. People are starting to live in tents, they cannot afford to rent, and even if there was a place to rent, the vacancy rate is less than 1% . The Philippine Condominium Act allows foreigners to own condo units, as long as 60% of the building is owned by Filipinos. Filipinos earn less so naturally they have to give discounts to Filipinos to stay above 60%. Foreigners have to bid against each other for that remaining 40%.

    Long before I got to the Philippines I developed a simple method for keeping my spending under control. First I have a goal of the maximum amount of money I want to spend each month. Then I keep a journal of what is spent each day. Knowing where you're at makes it a lot easier to keep you in control of your spending. Depending upon your income the Philippines is a great place to save money. It just takes a little effort and discipline. However, it's a good feeling to see that at the end of the month you've got money left to put into a saving account.

    Contrary to popular opinion there is no paradise on earth. Everybody's has to pay one way or the other, even free lunches cost somebody. We can only hope to make the best of our situation. Remember It's only money, you can't eat it, make love to it or take it with you when you leave. It's a tool so use it wisely.

    What he described was true for me when I first arrived 22 years ago and for a few years following. However, as time went on, I became more aware of the true costs, what is needed and not needed, and how to say no. I eventually learned how to control my budget cutting out unnecessary spending. But so far, I have a nice house, pay domestic help well, all my utilities paid off, go out 2 or 3 times for dinner every week with friends and a few times a year travel around the country and still able to put some away into savings. But now I see inflation cutting in my budget, and that just may prove to be a threat to my lifestyle.

    • @edwinholcombe2741
      @edwinholcombe2741 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I see a lot of expats here who make much more than I do, but at end of the month, they end up borrowing. They rent huge beautiful house absolutely empty of furniture. They have too many friends and family they have to pay for and take on trips. What is needed here is money management. That seems to be common sens, but so many come here thinking it's so cheap that they can spend without caution and not monitor their money.
      Get a budget. Know each month what your bills are and plan for it. Plan your budget, monitor i, and stick to it. Do not tell people how much money you have and if you have some extra, keep silent about it. Better for you to talk aabout how much money you DON'T havr. If feel that you need to spend on people just to keep their friendship, then you are not getting what you're paying for. From what I have witnessed, these simple rules would alleviate a lot of foreigners' financial problems.

    I have learned that the men who "spend money" in the PI or in other locations (such as Thailand) is because they know that is what the women are primarily after. You can be the most "run-down" or unattractive man - even the worse human being - but if you have money, you can largely have your way with any woman you want.
    His money makes up for what he lacks as a person.
    In the PI and in other areas in Asia, money is King and Queen. It is about economics and survival and not "largely" about love. Many of these women are skilled and even "artful" in getting to that money.
    I Thai woman I dated for almost two years told me to never say to her that I love her. I asked her why? She said, "Love has nothing to do with it."
    It also told me that she did not love me ad probably never would. She loved what I had, money. Money that could be used to benefit her and her family.
    I learned that I would never be loved and respected equally to her family. They would ALWAYS be first. (I understood).
    But I had to let her go because either she or someone in her family needed something ... money. My money.
    The male ego is a very fragile thing. These women know how to stoke that ego to get what they want.
    Like the Tina Turner song, "What's Love Got To Do With It?"
    It's business and survival in this rat race of a world.
    In the world of many Filipinos, it is a rat race, too.
    They do what they can to survive.

    So I come to the Philippines, we spend time together and I meet her family. Naturally we get married.
    She wasnts a BIG Wedding with all of the extra's. I'm wondering what this is going to cost me?
    Lynchon, a donation to the Church, renting suits and dresses, a place for the reception,a Limo and Flowers. I'm getting concerned about the money.
    And then I look at it from her perspective, she will never have another day like this, for one day She gets to be a Disney Princess.
    Cost me 2200 bucks to give her the best day of her life.
    Well worth every peso.

    Hit the nail on the head with this video. Calvin is an expat success story. Not just getting by, he is thriving. I hope I can return to Duma by early 2025. Only services and rent is cheap everything else costs as much or more, or is lower in quality. Electric, Gas, ANYTHING name brand. Cheap rent, but you have to be used to less outlets for power, smaller rooms with less storage, tiny everything, etc... However I managed everything living there because I'm thrifty not cheap. I can indeed take a dipper shower. BTW 1 kettle of hot water heats up a whole washtub of shower dipping. Velcro Shower curtains to put over the jealousy windows, they leak like crazy. With Velcro you can then remove for brownouts. Buy produce in the markets, buy meat and fish early in the morning its safer.

    If a person lacks self descipline, I am certain they will seriously over spend and ultimately find themselves in a less than ideal scenario. For me? I'll be 67 by the time I get there, so a relationship is not something I am concerned with. No Filipina to take care of, no Filipina family trying to bleed me either. I figure a small 2 bed room, lets me hire a housekeeper, so all the provisions can be bought BY a Filipina, thus avoiding the "foreigner tax". She can also do all the standing in line for this, that and the other thing. No more than I am being told the wages are, it will probably be cheaper than NOT hiring a housekeeper and doing everything myself.
    As for how I spend my time? I spend it at the keyboard of my computer, or reading my books. I dont do clubbing, I dont need to eat at restaurants, though I will once or twice a week. If you set your budget and stick to it, a person will be fine. Allowing yourself to be taken PAST your budget, is ones own fault.

    It’s the reason why we didn’t retire in the Philippines. My husband wanted to retire there. We visited in 2015 after he retired. We spent three weeks because we wanted to see my niece we sent to nursing school graduate. We spent $10,000+ because my relatives just made us pay for everything. We were never treated for a meal or anything. We were the ones spending. Before we left, my husband was exhausted and when we got home, he said we will never retire there. He could see that our money will be gone before the next month’s retirement money, although we could live very comfortably with a big house and lots of help there, we are also very comfortable here in the US.

I was ripped off getting a Grab from the airport grond transportation counter.. They overheard me talking about a grab from the SMART Phone counter.. They said "only" $14 US to take me to my hotel. And don't get me started on the cost of taking a woman out on a Date you can spend easily $100 per date..😢 Then Factor in the cost of Gas.. Utilities .. groceries and Insurances. This was in the late 2000, We had a friend, who was 50+ looking for a wife. He founded a 20 year olds gf to be his wife. The story that he told me was the father, who lived overseas came back & said, what happened to our house & car. Everything was sold! The father was so disappointed that he left & NEVER came back! So, the mother & daughter have hardly any source of income. Well, my friend told her how much money he makes & gave the mother, who was about his age $1,000 usd a month.
    Then the mother upgraded her life style.
    Then somehow, later the daughter said to him & he told me, that you're not telling me the truth. I NEED more money! I said, wait a sec. They were BROKE & POOR, when you met them. You gave the mother 50K pesoes a month. Do you know how much people make in the Philippines, especially from the provinces? At the time, about 100 USD. (5,000 php). The mother went from 0 to 50K php. And the daughter has barely worked in her life. What do she knows about money and work?

Even with the local price, you can bargain on it, and the seller will not be offended.

    Hi Calvin: Just my point of view. Unless a man is being held at gun point or by some other threat to his life, I feel every decision we make is on US. We're not being robbed if we "squirt" in these girls and have children. We're not being robbed if we marry them, know what they're about, and still squirt in them and end up with the children, all their health and welfare and that of their families and friends even neighbors. That's not robbery. It's a choice whose consequences or rewards are a result of choices made by our free will. I was married to a Filipina for the best 14 years of my life. But the closer I got to retirement, and she began to show her truer feelings that went against plans I thought "we" were making. I divorced her. Not just like that. But one rule I learned is that you can't talk to a hard-headed woman. You can explain all you want, but she will do or attempt to do whatever is in her mind. It is you - the man - who must decide what your response will be. My response has always been - once I see we are not compatible for the long run - out she goes. I don't surprise women with this. They are told up front. I was married to my first wife 25 years before I divorced her. And married to the Filipina 14 years before I divorced her. They are now just chapters of my past life. And I have no regrets for the good years I had with these women. Of course, now, these are good years because there is no one to rob me. I pay for what I want. Pay for what I get. And if it's too expensive, or too much trouble, I can easily do without it. Note: The older one gets, the easier it is to have women but not deal with their nonsense. Continued good luck in all you do.

    I live in a poor coastal town in the USA. Stuff is overpriced here due to lack of retail options.

    You are absolutely correct my brother. Family is a huge cost. And rent. DO NOT BUY over here. Never ever buy here in the PI. The houses are not built very well over here either. Not for the money they want.

    Calvin, my opinion based on your topic would be, since I make the money and I finance basically everything within this household, I certainly would make the calls and would let her know that spend what goes in our monthly budget, no more than that. Remember, you make that call. Now that all the prices are increasing, it's so practical for us to be aware of our spending. All I can say is that living here in the Philippines, we all have a responsibility when it comes to money, it pays bills, food, necessity, family needs, etc. etc. It's just a part of life. Both the couples should be in the same page with full understanding. There is always a saying "A happy Wife is a happy Life".

      But if you were afraid to lose her is a different story after you allowed her the spending habits, so I mostly disagree with Calving, your expenses are what you allow.

      I'm not asking you to agree with me. That is not important. I said that people like you will be in my comments. They always do.

      If you don't let yourself be robbed by the family, then you are called bad names from everyone except your wife. I budget 1200 but exceed because of "Filipino emergencies " all the time.

      @@calroach1 I personally think your comments are in reference to the Philipines but it can be any Latin American country or anywhere in Asia, I for one live in Thailand and heard many stories as well, even though this is not your case many guys old and out of of shape leave the west and Europe and find themselves an Asian young beauty, and I ask you do you think the affection they show is real? Money and the idea of living well have aircon eat well has a lot to do, I am not accusing only stating my opinion on your well respected channel.

    And prices are on the increase. Electric and food are every bit as expensive as the US. You want cheap gas? Stay in the US.
