  • Dave2D review of the 2018 Dell XPS 15 9570. The i9-8950HK is a beast but the thermal limitations of the chassis are still here.
    XPS 15 - amzn.to/2Jozmvx
    Like the new MacBook Pro, not much has changed aesthetically, The new 4k display panel is a little brighter. Awesome for content creation. Fortnite and other moderately demanding games run at a good frame rate on the GTX 1050 Ti but keep in mind visuals are capped at 60 FPS because of the screen. The 2018 XPS 15 is still an excellent laptop for content creation but the thermal design of the laptop needs to be improved.

      macbooks aren't powerful. they're overpriced to hell and back for their performance. this manages to give you the performance you'd need at a price that isn't ridiculous for its shape. of course a thick gaming laptop will have better specs at a possibly cheaper price. this is pretty much the jack of all trades, decent price for its form factor, performance and looks. macbooks only have one of those: looks.

    Glad I found a review talking about the thermal issues: My Dell XPS 15 9560 battery ACTUALLY CAUGHT ON FIRE! It was still under waranty and I had even bought extra service. It's been a month now and Dell is still working on giving me a new one, they confirmed I will recieve a 9570. I'm feared to death of these computers. I just got home and was very lucky otherwise my house would have been on fire. The laptop wasn't charging and wasn't even turned on at that moment. I had been using it intensly for work that day but it had been turned off for around 2 hours already...

    • @rsmith02

      Battery failure and thermal issues aren't likely related. Lithium is volatile and if there are flaws it can melt down. The throttling issue means the computer is actually cooling itself by reducing performance, not having runaway heat.

      Reezk Hosni gaming laptops are very good for this purpose, or even a 500$ normal laptop with an i5-8250U/i7-8550U & mx150 is Good
      The higher range would be i5-8300H/i7-8550U + gtx 1050
      If you want something more powerful the 8550U + 1050ti which costs 800$
      The best thing that would run revit, cad , etc would be i7-8750H + 1050ti or 1060
      With 1060 its about 1200$
      Howevrr Cad is really light and a 500$ laptop would run it perfectly for years to come

    • @rbaleksandar
      @rbaleksandar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MrOmarMoustafa It depends on which CAD software you are using and whether you do more GPU- or CPU-intensive stuff. Some software products (CAD, etc.) run better with Quadro and Xeon, other run better with your standard CPU and GPU series. Of course the price difference between a decent gaming notebook and a mobile workstation is definitely noticeable. I would first check what the software, that is used, runs best on and then pick the mobile solution accordingly.
      A 1050ti is enough until you decide to do some 3D rendering. Then you are screwed. There is a difference between the requirements AutoCAD and for example SolidWorks have.

    Good review! I think something often ignored in reviews is the fact that there are people who need dedicated graphics cards aside from gamers! The thermal throttling had me worried about buying the 9570 but this actually perfectly suits my needs for a mobile CAD/ render/ print media machine. 4k screen and battery life are both brilliant and all my architectural software runs smoothly without any throttling issues that I've noticed. I really couldn't find anything else comparable in the market since anything as powerful was a 'gaming' laptop with enormous sizes and/or disappointing screens and anything with a nice screen and size had disappointing graphics. It's not perfect. I have found the speakers to be disappointing, with a bug that forces me to restart frequently to get sound to switch back on, there's a squeaky spacebar, and I've even had a few system hangs over the 5mo I've had it. But overall, I'm happy with the purchase.

    This is an amazing laptop. I have repasted and undervolted it. It was still running a bit hot during gaming so, I have decided to disable turbo boost while I game. Now gaming and cpu and gpu are running in mid 70s. No more throttling issues. I recommend disabling turbo boost for anyone doing heavy gaming, as it reduced my temps by 10 degrees.

      What kind of games do you play? I’ve had mine since August and I’ve been playing games like mk11 and borderlands on like medium settings and it doesn’t get insanely hot but I’d like it to be better. What do you mean by disabling turbo boost?

    • @abdifatahartan9034
      @abdifatahartan9034 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the BIOS there is an option called Intel Turbo Boost. Turning this setting off will keep the CPU clock speed at base clock. However I have found that it can reduce the temps by 5-10C. There is also an app in Windows called Throttle stop, this can also be used to do it while the device is switched on.

    • @gumott
      @gumott 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    For those of you guys planning on buying the Dell XPS 15, I'll give you my experience over the past 5 months of using this laptop.
    I needed a new laptop to study mechanical engineering in university. I was deciding between the Macbook Pro with the M1 chip or the Dell XPS 15. But after reading and watching hundreds of reviews online about how XPS 15 and Mac are basically the same, XPS is better for gaming, and how Mac is bad for ME, I decided to get the Dell XPS 15 in March.
    PROS.
    - The laptop arrived three weeks after I ordered it-- It was estimated to take 5 weeks, but I was pleasantly surprised when it arrived two weeks early.
    - The keys are extremely satisfying to press--which allowed me to get a lot of work done simply because I was addicted to tapping the keys.
    - The screen is very wide and filling--allows you to focus on everything you are working on.
    - Battery life--I could watch twitch streams for 6 hours straight and the laptop would still have around 55~60% (from 100%).
    - Dongle. USB and HDMI dongle included with the laptop.
    CONS.
    - The trackpad. Every time I left-click using the trackpad, it feels as though the bottom of the trackpad is getting stuck to some type of glue and once I lift my finger off the trackpad, the trackpad lifts off the glue and leaves this distasteful sound. I found this problem straight from when I unboxed the laptop.
    - 2 weeks after purchasing the XPS 15, the screen started having issues. If you divide the screen into 4 sections, the bottom right side has a constant noticeable flickering. I tried doing everything to fix it but it just wouldn't go away. Every single time the laptop goes into sleep mode or I shut it off and reboot it, this same problem persists. After awhile, I simply gave up and started ignoring the flickering. (Only thing I have noticed that helps is plugging in the charger and using the device for one or two hours and the flickering gradually fades away.)
    - Screen freezes every now and then. This has occurred around once a week for every week since March--when I first got the XPS 15.
    - In-built camera. Very crummy resolution.
    - Ports+dongles. There is a high-pitched whirring sound that does not go away if a dongle is plugged in.
    This problem does not persist if there is no dongle. However, as a ME student and gamer, I almost always use a mouse that is connected to the laptop.
    - Speakers/sound system produce momentary static if I use them for the first time of the day.
    -Customer service. Basically inexistent. I moved to a different country (for university) after buying the laptop, and Dell told me that I couldn't get any help if I wasn't in the country it was delivered to. Even with the warranty, I am basically guaranteed nothing.
    - League of Legends Gaming. The bottom half of the entire screen lags hard. It wasn't there for the first couple of weeks, but after 1 month, the entire bottom half of the screen momentarily freezes and unfreezes--constantly throughout the game. This persists until I connect the charger.
    Overall, I would say the majority of problems I have had with the computer is hardware related.
    Considering the price of the Dell XPS 15, I would trade it in for a Macbook Pro in a heartbeat and invest a bit more money in a company that has a much more reliable product and will actually help in solving problems related to their products.
    For its price, the XPS 15 is NOT WORTH. I expected a MUCH better device with close to no hardware problems.
    I Literally went two times higher than my dedicated budget and spent almost 2 years of savings (around $2400 with tax+extra for shipping) for this laptop.
    For students who are on a budget--like I was--, I would recommend a Samsung device. Before the XPS 15, I used the Samsung notebook 9 (~$1,200) for 6 years. Games (Wizard101, League of Legends, Fortnite) worked perfectly on my Samsung device for all 6 years. All the workload that my Dell seems to be unable to handle worked unbelievably smoothly on my Samsung device.
    Good luck choosing a device everyone.

    I have it and I am going to return it on Monday for the following reasons: 1. Wifi needs to be resetted every 4th time I bring it back up from sleep 2. Annoying fan (spins up and down very fast for short bursts) 3. Loud fan: 45dB is 10 times louder my lenovo x230 4. Bad keyboard compared to lenovo thinkpads 5. Sharp edge of the case makes it uncomfortable to rest your hand on the case while using the touchpad 5.Buggy softwar from Dell 6. 30% performance throttling on battery (cannot be turned off, not even in bios). Decided to buy another Lenovo, this time a T480s

    thank you - brilliant commentary. I'm in the middle of looking for a pc laptop to run EEG data analysis which means a lot of data running for a considerable amount of time. Very difficult choice of what to go with as have been a MAC user for years and the switch to PC laptops is a big one. The main thing for me is performance and the decent life span of computer - have read about the Dell burning out after 2 years which is definitely not worth the amount of money it costs.

    There are people (businessmen and students) who travel a lot that need a decent laptop which can handle moderate work load without the weight of a luggage. Most importantly it has to not look like a flashy UFO when you have to present in a conference.
    The only downside of this laptop on that usage is the camera angle.
    If you are trying to play Tomb Raider with maximum settings on this laptop, you are looking at the wrong market.
    I mostly do programming and editing so the laptop performance helps a lot. Moderate gaming is run smoothly.

      I would say that the market of this device for professionals like software developers, is larger than market for gamers, i have only really seen the xp15 with 4 software devs, and xps 13 with people like product managers and stuff, dell will never make this device heavier for better thermals , I for one wouldn't buy it if it were heavier and neither would most of the people I know that own one. if you want to game go buy a gaming laptop or better yet a desktop.

    *Hey Dave* Just saw this video and your MacBook Pro 2018 video. It would be awesome if you could do a comparison video of the two, comparing render times in premiere and other applications like After Effects. Also, since both seem to have the thermal issues, which one throttles more and which one performs better under heavy load? I'm looking to get a new laptop and I want to make the right investment. I'm not a gamer, I'm a coder who uses all operating systems from Linux to Windows to Mac OS. My workflow is all Adobe related and Web Development. I'm also wondering how the trackpads of the XPS compares to the Mac. Thanks.

    Oh well, I’ve already ordered an XPS 15 9570 and it should be delivered in a few days :P. It seems like this laptop will suit me anyways. I want a laptop with good performance for doing school work and extra stuff, as well as being suitable for some casual gaming while being relatively light and thin. I got the one with the i7 processor so hopefully there won’t be as much thermal throttling. Still looking forward to the XPS 15, it’s a HUGE improvement over my current laptop.

      The laptop is great, basically no issues so far! The carbon fibre keyboard can get dirty (as in your hands will leave a mark on it) but obviously you can just clean it really easily. Obviously I don't know which model you're getting, so your experience might be a little different in terms of thermals if you get the one with the i9 processor.

    I've loved my 9550. I've had very few hiccups internally, I've upgraded the battery and it's still rapid with nVME, but my Soft Touch has not held up particularly well after about 2 years of daily use. I've got issues with peeling on the left of the palmwrest and on the 90 degree angle to the right of the power button. It definitely needs frequent cleaning and care to maintain it, which in hindsight I should have done.

The performance hit has not been noticeable and the machine hasn't skipped a beat. But, why sell an I9 if the chassis is unable to handle the heat unless your just selling specs? Upset that Dell hasn't fixed the issue but glad that the I7 is rock solid.

    Hi Dave,
    I bought a 9570 (before this video came out) and it arrived a few days ago. I've had crackling in the speakers, and judging by other forums, many people have had the same problem. Have you had any experience with this through any of your XPS laptops? Would love to hear your thoughts. Dell have offered a replacement, but others have done that and the problems persisted. I've updated the drivers (as far as I know). It's a beautiful machine, this problem is really letting it down!

    • @ikdekker

    • @tobybarnhill7693
      @tobybarnhill7693 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ikdekker I ended up buying the top spec one (i9, 32gb ram, 1TB SSD) and it’s a beautiful machine. However I’ve had some thermal throttling and also an issue with the speakers which dell is looking to repair (apparently by replacing the motherboard). So once they visit and look over it, I’ll get them to check over everything I’ve had problems with and address them, which I think is mostly software issues.

    • @ikdekker
      @ikdekker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Toby Barnhill customer support seems to be good. However, many reviews on the Dell site (www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/xps-15/spd/xps-15-9570-laptop) have several different issues. As it stands, 67 one stars, and 330 5 stars. Seems like it's mostly a good product, but for the price it's at, I don't want to have to be lucky.

    • @tobybarnhill7693
      @tobybarnhill7693 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ikdekker you’re 100% right. The service is really good (not as good as Apple, but better than anywhere else). The fact that they get a technician to come to YOU rather than you have to go to them is really nice of them. They’re happy to give me a replacement but I’ve said I’d rather them just fix the current one as chances are, there would be a reoccurrence of the same issue. If this doesn’t work out I’ll be moving back to Apple as XPS is the best looking and best performing for its size and body. I’d consider Razer but they’re customer service reviews aren’t convincing enough. Anything else looks cheap or too bulky with the same specs.

    • @clintonhendry8967
      @clintonhendry8967 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same problem. I fixed it by downloading the audio driver from the dell website. It was different than the one that Windows 10 installed automatically, and it got rid of the crackling issue. I forget the one I had before, but the one I have installed now is: 6.0.1.8454
      www.dell.com/support/home/ca/en/cadhs1/product-support/product/xps-15-9570-laptop/drivers
      My current issue is the space-bar squeak. It's total bullshit. The only thing I've found on how to fix it (besides a youtube video that involved Vaseline) is a reddit guy that says it'll go away one day.

    1st of all the 1st generation of it, you criticized a bit for precisely the same but not-as-pronounced thermal issue, while you say here that you need to Understand that the XPS was not designed with gaming in mind, which the ZenBook obviously shares..
    2nd and more importantly it is absolutely a better alternative to the XPS than all the Gaming devices you've mentioned here, 4K Screen, Good (Not as good I know) Battery Life, Awesome Build, Amazing Performance, Improved Thermals, Thin & Light Workstation Laptop.
    I bought the 1st Generation of it (1080p Screen), and I haven't looked back, I'm getting amazing performance even on the battery front (10 hours more or less).
    I love your content and I hugely respect your opinion and even use it as a reference in most cases, I just don't understand what is your problem with this amazing device, maybe give it some time, make a full review on the newer version, it might change your mind a bit.

    I literally just bought the new xps 15 today. The reason I got it is because I used to have the 2017 razer blade, but I brought it to the Microsoft store for them to fix it because of battery bulge (I didn't want to end the warranty by opening up the bottom). They gave me a 100 percent refund of $2100 and being rushed to buy a computer before they changed their minds, I bought this. It seems very good as of now. I'm headed to school, and I was a little embarrassed with the blade and its fans. For a back to school device capable of playing games, I see this as the computer I should have had since the start. I'm fine downgrading from a 1060 for a computer like this.

      Kevin Batts wth. I'm a noob I guess. Can a rookie like me learn how to do this on TH-cam and undervolt my XPS 15? Is complicated? Any things to worry about?

      @@malcolm4458 I think you can find some good videos on youtube on the subject, there's no risk. Use IntelXTU program rather than throttlestop, it's much easier. You will get some blue screens, that's all. Have patience and you'll be fine.

    • @miroslavhoudek7085
      @miroslavhoudek7085 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I assume that if you buy i7, you'd get pretty much the i9 after all that throttling. But you'd lose the opportunity to give them extra money for no reason whatsoever. Much like if you get the full HD screen, you'd miss your chance on forking over money for pixels you are unlikely to see on 15 inch screen. Just sayin'

    great video, OMG, having recently purchased a 2018 dell 15 9570, recently I was not made aware of a swelling battery issue. I am curious as to know if you have hade to replace the battery at all and how long are the batteries rated to last? Was there any error and or alert that the Windows OS gave you in your discovery of the battery problem, that is did you perform a diagnostic which informed you prior? This really sucks, to where I may now consider returning the laptop for this reason. Thanks

    Does it come with an i7-8850h? AND would this be more cost effective compared to getting the i9 version? as the 8850h comes close if not better than the i9 version in s real world performance. So, if not offered with an 8850h, why not?
    Cheers, A

      TabalugaDragon Hey, thanks for this suggestion. It's actually not for me, have a customer who was wanting the i9 for performance gain, but didn't like the price. I was thinking of the 8850h, but I guess he wants the Dell XPS(don't think the 8850h is offered, unless I do a custom); so, thanks again for the suggestion....
      Appreciate it👊🏻

    Honestly, repasting is not really difficult, it only takes 20 minutes of your time and your tutorial is pretty straightforward. Since then, I never had any thermal throttling. It's a beast of a laptop. Did work on both my old 9560 and my new 9570.

    At the place I work, we bought 3 of them. We had other problems as-well. Every now and then we would get a blue screen of death, a thing I haven't seen for plenty of years. And it is happening consistently for all 3 new laptops.
    We all have the i7-8550U with 16 Gb of ram.
    We didn't return any of them, since we hoped it might be fixed with update and they are really nice to work on. By searching we can see we are not the only ones having this problem.

    Just over a year ago I went for the xps 15 with the matte 1080p display rather than the 4k one and the i7 and I found the thermal throttling a problem with that too, but I changed dell's cheap and sparse thermal paste to an aftermarket one and got a £12 bamboo laptop stand from amazon and it's become the best computer I've ever owned and I doubt i'll be upgrading anything for years.
