This refresh moves the webcam from the bottom to the top of the display bezel area (no more chin-cam!) and updates to Intel 8th gen Whiskey Lake Core i3, i5 and i7 CPUs. As ever, the Dell XPS 13 is one of the more compact premium 13” Ultrabooks on the market. I picked up the i5 fhd 9360 last year after seeing your video comparing it to the, then newer 9370, and I have to say I'm still very satisfied. The battery gets me through three days of use at school(9-10hours) no problem when I forget to charge and it's snappy enough to handle 4gb Photoshop documents and compile all the C and assembly I can throw at it.
I'm glad Dell continues to improve this line.

Great review as usual, soddered on Killer Wifi Card is a dealbreaker. I changed to intel chip on my 9360 and the diffrence is remarkable.

The only thing keeping me from buying 9380 is the UHD 620. I don't want a dedicated GPU on this but wouldn't mind a better integrated graphics unit. Or perhaps a Ryzen 3rd gen APU with Vega 8 or Vega 10. :)

Great review, as always! Seems like I'll stick with my 9370 since I never use my webcam for anything other than Windows Hello anyway. The white version was reeeally good looking though.

Hi Lisa. I’m thinking about buying the Sony ECM-W1 mic that you are using. I have been reading many complaints about hiss from the mic. Is this something you have experienced?
Hi Lisa, nice review. I bought this laptop and wanted to share a few details that weren't mentioned in the video so your followers can actually know what they're getting into. The problem I'm having with it is that the integrated 620 uhd struggles displaying even basic 2D on such a screen. I'm having trouble scrolling up and down in PDFs without the display rate dropping to 2fps in some cases. I'm having trouble using excel as well and when scrolling it lags and grey boxes appear as data is being cached. All drivers up-to date and spent a lot of time trying to fix these even with their tech support, there just is no solution for this. So my recommendation is to avoid the 4k version at all costs. There are a few other things that are quite funny, like the mouse-pad clicking when the computer is being held by one corner.

I really like Dell. So many computers are cute or very practical. My secondhand E6420 and E6400 could restore Win 7 Pro and Vista Business and I restore the outer damages and what I want to replace. That one could work for me in the future as well, but it's mostly cute and might not be practical to restore and so on.
Seriously, can we buy the tee shirts from or through your website? You would make a killing selling those alone!
Would it be possible to put up a short comparison between the two screens? I’ve read various reviews but it doesn’t seem like any of the reviewers have been exposed to both screens. How bad is the battery? Is the difference in brightness noticeable in use? Does the 1080 model support HDR?

Good looking new colour schema for the XPS 13 ... so I guess that's why, of the TWELVE different configurations available for the 'new XPS 13'' on the Dell UK site, only ONE of them features that new colour. Good work, Dell UK! Sheesh.

So the main benefit over last gen is the webcam and the brightness? That's pretty bright for sure ! Shame it gets just as hot. Did you try capping it's clock speed or undervolting?
I have the XPS 13 9370 4K 16GB RAM 512GB, and love it!
How about its' battery? I'm thinking about getting the 4K version in the future.
Battery usage is good.
The biggest question I have is...did they fix the shadow at the top of the screen? That tiny bezel meant that the edge light comes from the bottom and peters out by the time it reaches the top of the screen. Drives me crazy...I use one for work every day. With the camera at the too now, is the backlighting more uniform?
Hey Lisa... So I was playing with this laptop for a little bit and I was just about to pull the trigger and buy it. But I noticed that the trackpad and animations were studdery. I would click on the start menu and there was a noticeable delay. I wasn't enjoying the experience as I did with the razer blade stealth or the Huawei Matebook, or even the HP Spectre. I don't know if it was the display model the Microsoft store had but it defiantly wasn't a pleasant experience.

Great review. Looking to pick up one soon. Confused between FHD n 4K. I'm using Surface Pro 6 currently (temporarily) and I love the display + aspect ratio. Will the FHD be a downgrade to SP 6 screen quality?
It will be lower resolution, but at 13.3", you'll need sharp eyes to dislike FHD all that much. However, that Surface 3:2 aspect ratio is pretty addicting.

Depends on the size laptop you want- the XPS 13 is super portable, the Matebook X Pro is generally less expensive and of course has a bit larger display.

Well my first choice was the T480 (I'm a developer) and my sole requirement was a screen between 14" and 15,4".
13,3" seems too small and 15,6" too big / has negative impact on battery life.
Obviously, as Sean said above, the 3:2 ratio seems awfully attractive for my specific usage..
Also, I'd have to note that my current workflow needs approximately 8Gigs to run properly (on linux), which means 12G of ram is the minimum..
Is there any other laptop available in Europe which has both a 3:2 aspect ratio and 16G variant ?
(I don't need a 4K screen or an i7, the quad-core i5 is more than enough and I'd prefer having better battery life)
The Microsoft Surface Book 1/2 are simply out because of the poor port selection and high price tag.
It feels like I'm looking for the holy grail..
Xiaomi has a good option but doesn't sell it in Europe so no warranty whatsoever.
Same issue with LG, the Gram is as attractive as it is out of reach here.
Cebrail Aktas I literally sent back the 9380 for a matebook x pro. The 3:2 screen ratio is much better than the 16:9. The matebook also gives you more bang for the buck. I would say the dell is a “sexier” machine overall with its rose gold and white colors but the huawei still looks really nice and premium to the touch. The bigger trackpad is also a bonus, and the screen quality is superb for the price. It’s a 3000x2000 screen (3k). I have the i7, 16gb with mx150 and it runs great. Battery life is good and I can usually get through a work day on it.
I just got the 9370 instead, more for the money. Still looks nice
That is the one thing that stopped me from buying the Dell XPS 15, the nose camera, now hopefully they move forward with this design to the XPS 15 2019, then I'll be comfortable moving for my 2012 HP Envy to the Dell

This is a beautiful lab top but super expensive. Was on the fence between this and the Carbon X1. Going with the latter as it's much cheaper w/top specs. Can't beat Lenovo's military discount.

Lisa, how is killer 1435 driver at Ubuntu (or Windows)? Love the compact DE version XPS13 but this soldered WIFI is annoying. I've been weighting between the precision 5530 base model (quadro has no uses in Linux) vs XPS13 i5 or i7 Ubuntu model. The former comes with 8300h and intel 9260 wifi. Do you know how is 8300h vs the U-series, like performance and battery life? Is the intel wifi and 8300h worthy of buying 5530 over 9380?

Wish I could tell you, but I've never tested Killer WiFi cards with Ubuntu. Given that Dell has shipped Linux edition XPS 13 models in the past and that there are drivers for Killer in Linux, I'd expect it would work decently.
I have xps 9370 dev. edition(which came with killer wifi card). I also installed windows and killer driver go well on it, i experienced a little bit of issues on ubuntu wifi, expecially with public wifi. Maybe it' s something that could be easily fixed ubuntu side.
I have the 9360 and I had terrible WiFi performance on the killer wireless, luckily they allowed swapping WiFi cards on this unit, I swapped to the Intel 9260 and have not had a single issue since, works like a dream on Windows and especially on KDE Neon (or any other distro I've tried), I had really dodgy performance on linux before.
IIRC there was a known issue between Killer wifi cards and Virtualbox ... anyone know if that's still the case?

were you able to open it with 1 hand with the new variable torque hinge? seems mine isnt working as expected....definitely easier to open than the 9370 and earlier but not quite as effortless as advertised.

Igwe Ogba i had it and mine was matte. Sent it back because 16:9 ratio just isn’t that great. 3:2 is much better imo.

I prefer the older model just because of the bezel dimension (top bezel particularly). Web cam on the top bezel in latest model creates larger bezel for about 2 mm difference over the previous model, which in my opinion sacrifices the beauty of overall appearance a bit. Mathematically, 2 mm is a really small number but somehow it could be matters visually, at least for me. Same bezel dimensions (on the side and top) the older model has, can give me illusion that the whole bezel doesn't exist , like something that I can easily ignore. Sorry for my bad English.
The Fans on My i5 model are very loud compared to the previous MK1 Xps13 that was virtually silent. I find the the Lid is very stiff and need two hands to open. There is a distinct hissing noise coming from the speakers which they could fix with firmware perhaps. Wifi takes a long time to reconnect. Keyboard is good and works well in black. The new Web cam is very good. The finger scanner is also very responsive.

Black or white? Is the newer white a better material by far, as I prefer black as a color.
For a Linux professional user (Fedora and Red Hat more specifically), what is the most powerful laptop option in 2019 in terms of CPU, RAM, very good thermal performance, built quality, dedicated graphic card (any ok one is enough), 15 inch screen, reasonably thin and portable, but with completely compatible hardware for Linux (i.e with their own proprietary drivers for Linux or perfect bug free alternatives) coming from factory with whatever operational system, since I'm going to change it anyway? I would love to view a video about that.
Every reviewers should pick on the electric whine, the PMWness of screen backlighting and the amount of heat it produces onto your lap and palm, it might not look like much, but when you need to live with it for years on end, especially in hot climates, it's really important.
I live in Texas, which is very hot much of the year. I've had the XPS 13 9370 for a year now to test, and the climate doesn't affect it much (indoor temps up to 80F). Clearly, the 9380 just came out, so I can't say how it will do in summer heat, but I'd expect similar to the 9370. It might help that Dell is also in hot Texas. The laptop core temps are hot, as noted in this review. Our unit doesn't have coil whine, but coil whine isn't uncommon in today's laptops, so I don't doubt some folks have it.

Clearly, the existence of electronics such as laptops with coil whine, are a clear indication that manufacturers don't care about their consumers, perhaps these laptops are designed by people who just can't hear it because their ears are no longer so young and sensitive.
The fact that manufacturers are going back and forth with DC or PWM dimming for backlights are a clear indication that they don't care enough to want to take a firm stance on what is good for their consumers because they want to save a few pennies here and there.

I'd go with the Dell. HP's laptops don't last long. Something in their heatsink actually degrades over time. They work great for the first few months and then gradually shit themselves.

The main reason I'm considering the Envy is the low price, portability and power (incuding the fact it has dedicated graphics, even if it is only an MX150). I'm aware of the Razerblade but I'm trying to save money where I can as this is already a fairly high-end area relative to my current laptop.

@@ItsMeHarry I don't have sources to share because this is just something I learned for myself after having it happen to two HP laptops. One had such bad heat sink degradation that there were actually burn marks in the chassis last time I opened it up. There are parts of the internal chassis that are charred black because of it. I kept the room the laptop was in at about 60 degrees fahrenheit so it's not like I kept it in a warm room that could encourage it to overheat. I could literally cook food with the exhaust from that laptop, even in a room so cold I couldn't feel my toes and fingers.

My touchpad on my xps13 9230 keeps getting disabled on its own without warning! :(
Have they improved the response time? 9370 had I believe the slowest of any ultrabook, movement looked like a smear

I don't get why they solder the WiFi card. How much space are they saving? They can instead get rid of that Noble lock. Can't imagine spending more than $1500 on a laptop that'll be stuck on 802.11ac forever. WiFi 6 is coming in months, not years. This is not a cheap purchase...

Jonny Wright Who honestly doesn't want longer WiFi range? For me, I'd hate to be the sucker to spend $2k on a brand-new XPS 13 that'll never get WiFi 6. 🤷♂️ But it's your money and make yourself happy 😃
WiFi 6 is the real deal. We have 100Mbps internet and 802.11n 2.4GHz doesn't cut it at the ends of the house. As you know, 802.11ac only upgraded short-range 5GHz (i.e., same room or neighboring rooms only). WiFi 6 is the real range upgrade we've needed for half a decade. That's why "new" routers have barely made a difference in the past few years and why mesh systems have gotten so popular (to make up for the 802.11n failures)...
Darth BEHFANS truth. The new XPS system coming this fall should be Ice Lake with LPDDR4 (much better standby battery life) and have the Killer AX1650 which is allegedly actually based on Intel's new AX200 WiFi 6 chipset!
I still wish we could upgrade it down the road, but this is absolutely the worst time to buy a device with a soldered WiFi card.

If you mean the Spectre x360, then it depends on whether you want a convertible (Spectre x360) or a conventional laptop (XPS 13). I'll likely do a smackdown to help you decide.

@@adityaj7664 Louis Rossman has some excellent videos on the ludicrous failings of Apple's new butterfly keyboards. (Having tried one myself, too, after coming from Lenovo's legendary Thinkpad keyboard, the Macbook keyboard has practically NO travel, so it's, at least for me, really uncomfortable to type on. My fingers hurt after only a few minutes' use!) Besides that, Louis Rossman ALSO has a vide on why the Surface laptops are so bad. BUT so does iFixIt, which gives the Surface a repairability score of 0-1/10! (Macbook Pro's was around 2-3, if that, I believe.)
when you change the display resolution settings on a laptop like you can with samsung phones. Does that help the battery, like with changing 4k XPS -> 1080p display in the settings?
Not at all because what consumes the electricity are the pixels and their number obviously rests the same whatever non-native resolution you use

After my 9370 top end model with the 4K, 16gb ram, 512 ssd had 3 power adaptors replaced due to coil whine, 1 new screen, 3 cpu and motherboard replacements due to overheating and buzzing cpu fans replaced in 3 months. Add to that the really poor customer tech support I would never touch one of these again. Also battery life is poor (somewhat expected I guess).
It did feel solid and well put together and the screen very nice, but clearly the QA is not where it needs to be. Also shocking fan noise.

Mario Barać that’s good to hear yours is trouble free. If you look up 9370 issues you will see many many other people have not been as fortunate as you.
The new Inspiron 13 seems to offer a good mix of ports without sacrificing size or weight like the older XPS did, and offers a decent CPU. The 9380 is looking simply over priced on high spec models.
That shirt reminded me of my departed Dad who put salt on watermelon.
I see 99c cpu temps. It's disappointing to see Dell has given up performance and lower temperatures for being quiet, which was my main annoyance with the 9370. The EC temp sensors are located outside of the thermal insulation intentionally. I would skip this one.

For me, the thing that puts me off, is the lack of ports. Does anybody have any suggestions for laptops of similar spec, similar price with more ports?
Soldered RAM is still why I stick to ThinkPads.
