@@xarana I don't get the point of all these devices. I got the Yoga 720 15 inch and it's mostly the same. Performance is fine but when I try to game with it I have to cool down my device with extra ventilation and then it doesn't stutter/throttle. It's a 3 year old device now and nothing has changed. Only the connectivity could have been better (hdmi and 1 more thunderbolt 3 would have been nice). The 1650 is between 15 and 20% better than 1050 ti max q but with throttleing that doesn't matter that much anymore. What I like about the 720 is that you can switch easily to a bigger SSD or RAM.
i got the X1 extreme and returned it. 1. the screen choice for me (so IMHO) is crucial. they let you choose a dim 300 nits fhd or a 400 nits 4k with touch. they also claim they are both antiglare: the 4k is NOT anti glare (i mean, i expected that), but that's not thr prob. i think 400 nits is the minimum for working nicely in a well lit environment. i thought i could scale to fhd the 4k and retain the 400 nits. bad choice, because windows is absolute crap at rescaling, everything was blurry-er than my old not even fhd pc. why not keeping 4k? 4k on a 15" device is useless. yes you can notice but our eyes are fine at fhd, crisp but not out-of-reality crisp. 4k meant the fan ran more (more of this) and the gpu was being demanded more, for something not necessary. more heat = less durability. 2. tha fan ramping profile is terrible (keep in mind the 4k). the x1 stays quiet as long as it can then ramps up the fan for a quick cooling and the returns silent. if you play with it, fine: the fans will stay on after short delay. for everything elese they will go up-down-up-down. extremely annoying. 3. i didnt find the keyboard that orgasmic as everyone say. 1 key was badly designed too. i really liked the 2 ssd option, the esthetics, the slightly more I/O and the weird chio card slot which i use for some state-related things like healthcare etc... i confronted it directly to an xps: i liked the screen more (400nits fhd almost anti glare) the keyboard and weight, which at that time was like 100 and something gram less. for the rest it was the same: i'll get an xps. hope it helps!
@@stephenvoncrven4319 Have you got Gen 2 or the 2018 model? Because current X1 extreme offers FHD and 4k 500 nits both. I also was looking to get either XPS or TP X1 extreme. Got bored with my macbook:)

Not seen you do a Lenovo X1 Carbon review so far. Would be cool if you would review the recently released one, with full specs. Maybe even a egpu test? Just an idea.
You could check out the MobileTechReview comparison from last year to get a pretty good idea about their differences. Neither have changed drastically, and the ways they have changed is pretty similar with both getting 9th gen processors, GTX 1650s, and Samsung OLED panels
Hey Dave, Can you please do a video on the best laptops for creative professionals? (Architects, Graphic Designers) Great performance powerhouses but slim and good looking at the same time.
Basically: If you have an Intel system, download Intel extreme tuning utility and on the core voltage offset and cache voltage offset you need to change them by the exact amount, my laptop goes -125mv but every laptop is different. Try with a -50mv since most laptops can do that and then use your computer for like a day or two, then go -60mv ect until you reach a blue screen of death. At that point, start your PC, the Intel tuning program resets to default so you'll have to set the voltage to the one before the crash. This usually doesn't destroy CPU's but if you destroyed yours (added voltage instead of lowering it for example) - its not on me
@@TabalugaDragon I also use throttlestop but it also doesn't auto do the undervolt for me when I do a restart, so in my case it doesn't matter. Also, like most people, I usually put my laptop to sleep (closing the lid) instead of shutting down .. so it's never an inconvenience even with Intel XTU. Also with you saying you disagree completely means I'm overclocking wrong too. Please enlighten me?

@@haydenchan2003true, however the razer logo is definitely more bizarre looking for people that are just seeing it for the first time, so depending on the environment that's debatable
@@haydenchan2003 I mean, it depends on the person. My friend likes the Aero more, but I'm on Razer. The Razer has better build (much² better), and better speaker & trackpad. But the Aero has -slightly- better thermal, better pricing, and better battery life. As for the keyboard and performance, the keyboards are at the same level (Aero has heavy keys, while Razer has an uncommon layouts), and their performance are basically neck and neck, which is basically not worth to mention.
Nah, making a standartized score is difficult because everyone's priority on a computer isn't the same. Even if you do an objective scaling, everyone values each feature differently. So it would be better to watch the review anyway
Hey Dave, great video summary as always, and good on you to point out year after year the thermal limitations of this device, but I think after this many years and this many iterations, I think you should call out their ongoing problems with high DPC latency. It appears all xps models, 13/15 inch since 9x5x series is heavily affected. The problem is so bad and pervasive that just day to day usage causes pops and crackles in multimedia playback.
Great video Dave. I have modded 9550 and 9560 extensively. Your research and comments are spot on. I still run a 2015 9550 and it looks like new. Carbon Fibre looks perfect.
Yeah all that due to poor bios fixes (I'm on the 9570 and the same here even opening task manager kick fans in , not helicopter like tho.. but he'll 4 iteration of bios later of the one that fucked the fan curve and still not fixed.. )only thing I hate aboute my xps only love otherwise (except capture one not being good friends with Dell and Intel and not using the good GPU for hardware acceleration 🙄
Unless you need a 15" oled screen & a dedicated GPU, I'd recommend getting the XPS-13 instead - it's lighter, has the same keyboard size and is just as nice. As an XPS-13 owner though, I'll list some of the main issues with XPS laptops (still my favorite laptop though): * The end of the charger and the middle of the laptop at the touchpad have leds that light up when it's being charged. These are really annoying at night. * The screen has a glassy finish which reflects a lot of light. Usually not an issue because the screen is really bright, but it's a problem if working outdoors. * The screen is quite prone to getting scratched. I guess just dust on my keyboard has done it. Visible when looking at it from the side, but doesn't bother me when using it. * You can't upgrade the ram on the 13" model (dunno about the 15"), so get as much as you'll need. * The laptop generates a lot of static which will be picked up by your audio equipment. I use an ifi volume reducer + an external DAC to eliminate it when listening to music, because I have sensitive (low impedance) headphones. If you do as well, then add 50$ to the price of the laptop because you NEED that thing.
Not really, depends on what you need it for. If you need to run CPU demanding tasks, e.g. video rendering CPUs on 15' is the choice. Can you run Cinebench20 on your XPS-13? I am getting close to 2700 score on i7 15' after undervolting. If you do a lot of lightweight tasks, 13'is a much better choice (lighter, smaller, etc.)
We use these laptops at our 3DCAD Company, because they have the option for quaddro graphic cards. What i like most about them is the build quality. Our toddler accidentally dropped mine from a stone stairs a few months ago, it had just a little dent in the aluminium chassis :p.
And apple definitely never did that.. and they definitely never been the most used brand in laptop industry.. I mean Even 14 yo girls have overpowered MacBook i9 laptop nowadays 😂
I am one of the “some user”. Any guidance on some of the best 2019 15inch laptops for the average user. I’m not splitting the atom and I am not an IT guy. I just want the best performance without overpaying
Dave's right and this is what has always been the case with the entire XPS 15 lineup from the very start - it was never designed for gaming, it was put out there as a professional mobile workstation, and in particular targeted for Content Creators. It's amazed me with how many people have purchased these laptops over the years and moan that it thermal throttles / gets too hot when gaming after a short period of time... the chassis simply cannot handle it. Those who purely want to game should simply go down the route of Asus, Alienware, AORUS, MSI etc. The chassis on these maybe bigger & heavier, but they are for a reason.
I think it's a valid complaint given that there are plenty of professional workloads that require extended use of the CPU and GPU. I am hesitant to recommend this to my graphic design friends because it'd fall throttle to hell during a complex 3D render. "Gaming" is not a slur and should not be used as one. If a computer can game, it can work. No game, no work, at least not for everything.

I own this laptop and yes, the cpu thermals are bad when gaming, or doing some heavy tasks for extended period of time. While playing many titles, the CPU was going as high as 99 degrees Celcius, but GPU was like max 60 degrees, which is crazy.

It is almost as thin as the XPS, has a sleek metal design and much more horse power than the new XPS with way better cooling. Doing IT related stuff with a 1080p screen has superior support over a 4k screen.
I was just looking for reviews on this machine, ended up looking last year's Dave's review when this was uploaded. Great timing but I'm still not convinced on this laptop
Jae Kim Exactly, Dave needs to get with the times. You no longer need a heavy laptop with bad battery life and crazy cooling solution when you can literally run a eGPU and have the best of both worlds.
@@thebiggamaster well, I thought that since the internal gtx1660 won't be in use, the heatsinks would take care of the CPU. However, it still gets really warm. With an undervolt of -100mv and the eGPU I get temps around 75-90°C
Not sure if you'll be able to do a review as such, but I was hoping to find a review of a laptop for software developers. I've been watching all of your videos over and over again, but I don't think I really get the info that I need, I don't game much, just once in a while but not heavy games either, for me, the most important things are having a big screen prefferably 4k (but the big question is if I'll be able to use it without windows scaling), light weight, good processor and lots of RAM, at least 16 but would preffer 32... and of course, nvme, maybe 2 slots? The main thing is, I don't really need a graphics card, that makes the laptop more expensive and thicker... Does my question even make sense? haha, thanks, love your channel and keep up the good work!
Dave I have had this laptop for about a month now the 2019 version and I gotta say most of the points you said are pretty true. Just running Minecraft at 60 FPS heats up the laptop pretty quick to the point where you almost wouldn’t want to hold your hand on the bottom of the laptop. The top also heats up and you can feel it right above the F1-12 keys. I’ve also had some Bluetooth problems, where if I turn off the computer or just turn Bluetooth off it won’t turn back on unless the drivers are reinstalled. I’m not sure if that’s the killer cards fault or mine is defective. But other than that I’ve had no problems with this laptop and it’s really nice I would definitely recommend it

@@wotblitz4071 i bought it in march 2019, did they update? or is it regional? i'm in eu. anyways the fans profile is still a prob. like wathcing a movie is wayyyy annoying. i guess it can be tweaked?
i'm also coming from a 2011 mbp, prepare for some sub-par audio :D.
because of the stupid 2in1 line they place speakers on the bottom to save money in engineering 2 sets of speakers. THEY ARE DISMAL
Dave, Lenovo’s X1 Extreme Gen 2. Please, review it!!!! :) Tell us what you think of the keyboard in comparison with the XPS 15 and if the OLED in the X1 is as good as in Dell’s 15.
The OLED panel on the X1 Extreme will be the exact same one, except that it will have color calibration

Very intelligent commentary as, unlike many other XPS 15 reviews, it does drill down on the weaknesses. The XPS 15 is lovely, but is has grown complacent.
The intro animation alone is worth a like. Always fresh and interesting

You could check out the MobileTechReview comparison from last year to get a pretty good idea about their differences. Neither have changed drastically, and the ways they have changed is pretty similar with both getting 9th gen processors, GTX 1650s, and Samsung OLED panels

lmao. The sad thing about bronze players in overwatch is, there are a ton of bronze players that already get like 200 fps.
Hey Dave, could you do a tutorial on how to undervolt a laptop?
He already made one
Basically:
If you have an Intel system, download Intel extreme tuning utility and on the core voltage offset and cache voltage offset you need to change them by the exact amount, my laptop goes -125mv but every laptop is different. Try with a -50mv since most laptops can do that and then use your computer for like a day or two, then go -60mv ect until you reach a blue screen of death. At that point, start your PC, the Intel tuning program resets to default so you'll have to set the voltage to the one before the crash.
This usually doesn't destroy CPU's but if you destroyed yours (added voltage instead of lowering it for example) - its not on me
I use this github.com/kitsunyan/intel-undervolt works great.
@@TabalugaDragon you need to make task scheduler to set xtu to run those tweaks every boot...

Will you be reviewing the new x1 carbon soon?
5:57 actually no, the razer blade isn't even close to a good enough value for me to consider it, my recommendation the gigabyte 15 oled, which is a much better choice
Ryan D yeah but that looks terrible. Taser gets away with their higher prices because their is nothing with the same performance and doesn’t look like a toy
Razer's customer service is an abomination

Me 2, did you get a laptop already?
can you make a D2D score for laptops and upload it to gsheets?
Luis Guillermo Moreno Sounds like the Doug score
Nah, making a standartized score is difficult because everyone's priority on a computer isn't the same. Even if you do an objective scaling, everyone values each feature differently. So it would be better to watch the review anyway
Thanks for the review Dave! Now for Dell gaming laptops, when do you think you'll be getting your hands on the new Alienware M15 or M17? :D
My former XPS15 9560. Everytimes i just use photoshop on it, that fans start running like helicopter. I was worry it could fly away.😂

Thank you so much for clarifying Dave :) great review
Dave, can you please make a review of the Lenovo X1 carbon 7gen?? A business/productivity laptop
Dave, why still no mention of the DPC latency issues related to ACPI.sys that has plagued the XPS-15 lineup since the beginning?
Unless you need a 15" oled screen & a dedicated GPU, I'd recommend getting the XPS-13 instead - it's lighter, has the same keyboard size and is just as nice.
As an XPS-13 owner though, I'll list some of the main issues with XPS laptops (still my favorite laptop though):
* The end of the charger and the middle of the laptop at the touchpad have leds that light up when it's being charged.
If you have so much time plant some trees pls
@@TetaGama Nah the XPS has an amazing keyboard (better than thinkpad's even imo since it wobbles less) so I can type really fast :)
@@rusinsr okay
@@rusinsr I have Logitech g pro kb
Not really, depends on what you need it for. If you need to run CPU demanding tasks, e.g. video rendering CPUs on 15' is the choice. Can you run Cinebench20 on your XPS-13? I am getting close to 2700 score on i7 15' after undervolting.
If you do a lot of lightweight tasks, 13'is a much better choice (lighter, smaller, etc.)
Man you have the cleanest content out there !
We use these laptops at our 3DCAD Company, because they have the option for quaddro graphic cards. What i like most about them is the build quality. Our toddler accidentally dropped mine from a stone stairs a few months ago, it had just a little dent in the aluminium chassis :p.

It's good to see this video right when I am probably going to get one :) makes me feel like I am making a good choice
How I got thermals on mine under control:
Disable 1 core
Undervolt
Liquid metal
I can't afford anything he reviews 😂
Hey Dave. Thank you a great content! I was looking for a video on TH-cam about some kind of WiFi cards comparison for a laptops and couldn’t find any. Will be great to hear something like it from you. 👍

@@tharris5109 that is very generous of you sir. I will check with my local stores and see if they have one available.

@@boo1_gaming927 that is exactly how it looks like. it is good for a student because of that fancy look and the limited performance, but practical is what makes the money for such product :)
I am an IT student and I stepped up from the DELL XPS 9560 to a Acer Predator Triton 500 (rtx2060 + 1TB SSD). It is almost as thin as the XPS, has a sleek metal design and much more horse power than the new XPS with way better cooling. @@MonkeDiesTwice my biggest concern is if the cpu will overheat when gaming with an egpu, does it?
@@thebiggamaster well, I thought that since the internal gtx1660 won't be in use, the heatsinks would take care of the CPU. However, it still gets really warm. With an undervolt of -100mv and the eGPU I get temps around 75-90°C
Review the “new” Alienware m15
Please review the Thinkpad X1 Extreme
