  • For those wondering, the 6T70 transmission has a non-serviceable internal filter. Watch this video for clarity: • 6T70 Teardown
    Skip to 29:07 to see the filter being removed. You'll see it's just not feasible to change the filter unless you have major problems.
    Spring is finally here!! With the warmer temps, it's time to do a semi-annual drain and fill of the transmission in my 2012 Impala (Midnite.)
    The 2012-2013 Impala and 2014-2016 Impala Limited are equipped with a 6T70e 6-Speed automatic transmission. This model transmission does not have a removable pan like a conventional automatic. This is not a problem, however, as there's a drain plug on the bottom side, allowing you to easily drain 5 quarts out of the trans no fuss, no muss.
    I purchased 6 quarts of Pennzoil Platinum LV "multi-vehicle" trans fluid from Amazon. The product I received was different from what was pictured in Amazon's listing. After thinking I was duped, I consulted the "Bob Is The Oil Guy" forums, and was reassured this fluid is fully compatible with any GM automatic trans. GM will not allow the "DEXRON VI" licensed name to be placed on a product that's not compatible with its transmissions.
    That said, this is a full synthetic fluid. It was reasonably priced, so if you have a 6T70e trans in your vehicle, why not drain and fill the fluid every 6 months?
    So follow along as my "assistant" and I show you where the drain plug is located, and also where to add fresh fluid. After all the old fluid was drained out, it took exactly 5 quarts of fluid to bring it to the proper level. That being said, ALWAYS remember to check your fluid level after adding the proper 5 quarts with the vehicle idling in PARK and the engine up to operating temperature.
    From Amazon: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...

    TBH I really should take this old video down and re-record it. What you're supposed to do is completely drain the pan, refill with 5.28 quarts, idle until the cooling fans kick in, shift through all gears, drive around at low speeds for a few minutes, then top off if necessary.

    I just took my 2012 Impala to Aamco for a drain and fill. They told me they had to let it sit 3 hrs (or more) for it to cool all the way down or not much would come out because of a thermal valve somewhere. (So don't ever do this when it's hot). My hours wouldn't accommodate so had to forget it. Thanks to your vid I now know I don't need those guys. I thought it had a pan and no drain; I've only had this car about a week. Just like Hondas', drain plug and dip stick... Awesome!!!

    Thanks for such a great video and taking the time to share. Having others raise questions and the added responses help solidify the additional parameters that are important to know, like having it cold first to drain. Also, to have the engine running at idle, in park and temp warm to check level after refilling. There is a specific temp that can be monitored with specific scan tool too. I think the range is somewhere between 80F to 130F, would have to look that up again. Even old transmissions would puke fluid out of the vent tube if overfilled, yet the newer units seem to be way more finicky about being overfilled, different subject. Coming from the old style to these newer units keeps me leery, yet have done several with scan tool, monitoring the trans temp, watching for fluid overflow upon refilling ( different units than this, like Toyota or the 4cyl model trans ) and following proper procedures has thus far been successful. I too believe in keeping it changed regularly, to assist in longevity. Having been through a few rebuilds, I prefer to keep them serviced instead. Some units are just have failure prone hard component's too. Again, Thanks greatly!

    If the weather is good tomorrow, I will be doing this myself. The color is a very light pink/brown color so it's definitely due. When I bought the car, I asked the garage to change the tranny fluid as one of the agreements but I don't know if they actually did or not. It really doesn't look like it considering mileage and color. I have Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic. It doesn't have the Dexron license logo on it but it says it's perfectly fine for Dexron VI transmissions so I guess we'll find out.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't worry too much about compatibility if it says it'll work with Dex VI. I haven't personally tried MaxLife, but have routinely used the Valvoline Dex VI/Mercon LV fluid that comes in the blue bottle. If this is your first drain-and-fill, I would do another in 6 months or so just to get more of the old stuff out. Good luck, hope the weather cooperates!!

    seems easier to determine the refill volume by using a hard plastic graduated cylinder/cup design so that measurement is assured accurate. Oil jugs may vary a few millimeters on their graduations. If a guy decides to use oil bottles/jugs a second clean jug could be used to fill with clean fluid and would do away with the use of the smaller bottle to try and enhance accuracy of measurement. Just fill the new fluid jug to the same level as the old fluid and your are ready to go.

      Yes, I had it flat on the ground. Guess I'm either skinny enough or lanky enough to reach under there! 😂 I would at least try to level the car front and back when raising it, as the pan is very shallow and might not drain completely with just the front raised.

      It's not shaped like an oil drain plug, so there isn't a gasket or washer or anything like that. I haven't had any issues with mine leaking, but if you were concerned you could always wrap a little teflon tape around the threads.

      Think about changing it soon. The factory fill of Dexron VI is good for 100k, but it never hurts to have clean fluid! The fittings at each end of the cooler lines (both at the radiator and the transmission) have little retaining clips that you simply fish out with a pick or a small screwdriver. Once you pop the clip out, the line pulls straight out. There are 2 lines, they're around $22 at RockAuto.

    • @CertifiedShadetree

      Your '15 Limited is essentially a carryover of the '12-'13 Impala, so it is identical to the '12 in the video.
      The 6T70 transmission has a filter, however it is not user serviceable. From what I gather, the filter is inside the transmission, and the only way to access it is to remove the transmission from the car and split the case open.
      This transmission truly defies conventional logic!!

Or thats if you drive it to what it’s needed like 60K miles, I got mine at 37K and it’s at 73K now so I think to say it should need a new filter should it? I went by GM, it was odd that the filter was like $160 too, or I guess get it professionally done for that

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jorgenvonstrangle000 The only way it'll be feasible to change the filter is if you have the trans out for a full rebuild. If you change your fluid on a regular basis you won't have anything to worry about. Dexron VI is full synthetic and good for 100k, but seeing as the fluid is cheap and this trans is easy to service, it makes sense to change it out once or twice a year. That way, you'll never run the risk of plugging up the "filter" or worse yet, needing a rebuild.

      With just over 100k, you're just fine to change the fluid. In fact, to counter what I said, I just did a complete fluid exchange on a 2002 Bonneville with 215k. Transmission was having difficulty shifting into 3rd gear and the fluid was DIRTY (but not burnt.) The exchange immediately improved the shifting, and it's been impeccable ever since. So as long as the fluid isn't burnt smelling or extremely black, you're fine to change the fluid.

      How many miles, and how often was the fluid changed? This transmission has a non-serviceable filter, so if the fluid changes were neglected for long periods, the filter could be plugged up. I would drain a little bit of the fluid out and see what condition it's in. If it is very dark and smells burnt, then you're going to need a rebuild soon. If it's a faint pink or light brown color you should be fine to change it out. For good measure, dip your finger into the fluid you drained out and rub it between your thumb and forefinger and feel if it's gritty. If not, you're good to change the fluid.
      All that said, the car is only 6 years old and roughly 50k past the trans fluid change interval. Unless the car has been abused and beat to shit I personally would change the fluid out. Don't get a flush, though!! Drain 5 quarts, replace, then repeat every couple of weeks until you do 4 or 5 drain & fills.

Sorry about all the questions lol t.i.a

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      On this transmission, the best way to get all the fluid changed out would be to do a drain & fill, drive it for a couple hundred miles, and do another drain & fill. For the fluid to meet the Dexron VI specification, it must be full synthetic. This transmission MUST use Dexron VI ONLY, so you can be assured it's full synthetic no matter what...

      Ok I was gonna order acdelco transmission fluid regular ATF but now ima order the full synthetic kind from acdelco cause I'm gonna do a full tune up on my Impala new spark plugs new ignition coils already did the coolant and ima do it on my next oil change anything else I should do for the tune up?

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cesarsera7218 Just make sure the fluid is Dexron VI and you'll be golden. Your ignition coils shouldn't need replacing unless you have a misfire. If you happen to damage a boot on one or more of them you can order a rebuild kit from RockAuto. Oxygen sensors are a good idea to replace when you're doing a tune-up. When you get around the 150k range replace the serpentine belt, idler pulley, and tensioner pulley. Oh, and install a Catch Can!! The sooner the better, as these engines collect oil on the intake valves and it cakes up and robs the engine of performance. (I have a video posted on how to install one, BTW)

    I recently bought a 2012 Impala LTZ that has about 190K on it. I purchase the OEM ACDelco fluid for it, the fluid in the car looks pretty dirty. The carfax report doesn’t say it’s ever been changed, but I imagine it might have been changed at least once. Have you ever heard of damage being caused from changing the fluid after a long time in the 2012/2013 Impalas? Going to change it sometime this week but was just wondering if you had heard of it causing problems.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've heard of the Traverses & Acadias having more issues than the Impalas (same transmission - my guess is because the SUV's are heavier, and thus under greater stress.) If it were my car, I'd drain out a cupful or so of fluid and examine it up close. Feel if it's gritty, see if there are any metal shavings in it, if it has any pink color left, smell if it's burnt, that kind of stuff. If there's anything alarming, I'd probably leave the old fluid in it and start saving for a rebuild. If it passes the sniff test so to speak, go ahead and change it. Just don't get a flush whatever you do!

    • @evanmelton3315

      Best advice I can give you for that 3.6 - Change the oil every 5000 miles (reset the oil life monitor when you do, but don't go by what it says.) Use a top quality synthetic oil like Valvoline Modern Engine 5w30. Use a Delco UPF63R oil filter. Locate the PCV valve in the rear valve cover, remove it, and drill out the 3 holes (the 2 small ones to 5/64", and the large one to 7/64".) Also clean out the PCV with carb cleaner before reinstalling it (and clean it out once a year.)
      The 3.6 is finicky, but if you follow the above to a "T" you shouldn't have any issues with it (I'm assuming yours was at least taken care of, otherwise it wouldn't have made it to 190k!!)

      I guess I should clarify, as the 2015 Impala has 2 different engines, each with a different transmission. Does your Impala have the 3.6 liter V6 or the 2.5 liter 4 cylinder? The way to tell is the engine cover of the 4 cylinder reads "ECOTEC" and the engine cover of the V6 reads "V6 VVT Direct Injection." If you have the 4 cylinder, then yes, you will have to have a shop check the fluid, as there is no dipstick. The V6 model does have a dipstick and is in the same spot as the one in my video.

    • @apriljohnson9734

      @CertifiedShadetree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the cap you see at the top of the transmission is used for filling only. To check the fluid, you have to crawl under the car and locate the upper level plug. After removing that plug, the fluid should be up to the very top of the threads. Fill through the cap at the top if needed. Not exactly easy, but not entirely impossible either.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think you're misunderstood. First off, you say to wait until 100k to change the fluid?!? If you have that mindset, then absolutely you will eventually grenade your transmission.
      The only way you can cause damage to an automatic is if you DON'T change your fluid regularly! And I mean more frequently than 100k. All of that old burnt fluid turns to varnish and builds up inside the transmission, then when you eventually do change the fluid, said detergents knock the varnish & shit loose inside and THAT'S what damages the transmission. (Also happens when you hook the trans to a flushing machine.)
      The trans fluid (like engine oil) itself doesn't go bad, it's the additive package that breaks down. Extended amount of time and excessive heat will kill the additives very quickly and turn to sludge/varnish.
      Why wait until 100k? There is NO downside to changing EVERY SINGLE fluid in your car more frequently, INCLUDING trans fluid. My point of all of this is to change early, change often.

    • @CertifiedShadetree

      Not necessarily. Your statement is only true if the transmission was neglected for a long period of time. If you stay on top of maintenance, and change the fluids regularly from an early age, your transmission will last well past 300k miles with no fear of "losing" it.
