In this video I show you how to change the transmission fluid in a 2012-2016 Chevy Impala. This is a pretty straightforward Fluid change that anyone can do to save you time and money! This process is similar on Chevy Impala cars 2012-2016 with a 3.6L V6.

Ok thanks
Knowing there's a drain plug is gold!
Wonderful Tutorial. I'm a one owner 2012 Impala, 110,739 miles, with no issues on transmission,. I changed the transmission fluid and it was brown...I should have changed at 75k miles- shame on me. Anyway I changed it at 110,739 miles, Dextron-6, high-mileage full synthetic. Exactly 4.90 quarts came out...i put in 5.25 refill. Will check fluid again later when hot. Test drove for a week with absolutely no issues.
We drove this car hard and in Texas heat...so if my impala can handle a transmission fluid change at 111k miles...i think everyone that's worried about changing theirs with under 120k miles should not worry go ahead and do it...it will extend your transmission's life.
I appreciate this! I'm getting mine looked at tomorrow with 119k miles on it
Thank you MattDIY, I honestly thought that I had gone too long without changing my transmission fluid, I have 94k on my 2012 Impala and was afraid to change the transmission oil in fear of it not working properly or at all afterward...Thank you for sharing your knowledge and helping out, us Impala owners, God Bless!
Thanks so much for the kind words!!!
Wow this is a much easier process than I thought it would be. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video! I'm now TH-cam certified to change my transmission fluid! I appreciate you
A video that actually shows what I searched, THANK YOU SIR 🙏🙏
Thank you!!!
Thanks Matt. Mine is a 13. Will buy the fluid when I see it on sale.
Thanks, i have a 2012 and will be doing a fluid change before fall. Very helpful video.
Glad to help!
I own the same car, I really appreciate these simple to the point videos
Thank you! Glad it helped!!!
Great instructional video.
I hate sealed transmissions because you cannot change a filter or clean a magnet which sets it up to fail eventually, regular fluid changes or not.
Thank you!!
Since these have transmissions that run out early, I started changing mine around once a year just to be on the safe side.
Actually the six speed is a good transmission
I have 257k on my original transmission and there is not a thing wrong with it.
Hey man if I've already started slipping in first, should I change the fluid or would it be bad to do that?
@@bc4134the 6T70 transmissions are known to go out tbh, and alot of people got heavy foots driving them. So because of that its best to change it out earlier than normal to be on safe side
Wow! This actually looks like I can do it. Need some lifts but o should be good. I have the police version 2012, so it should be the same.
Nice! Yeah you can do it. Good luck!
Is there a transmission filter on this car I have 2013 3.6 Impala LTZ. No issues with transmission but don't want any thank you for the video great work easy to understand thank you in advance for helping us .
Thank you very much!! This particular car did not have a serviceable filter.
@@matt-diy thank you very much . I got to get this done ASAP thank you so much for this critical advice and the very good details on how to do it . I feel so dumb for not knowing your knowledge is priceless. Thanks again my friend!!
@@tagged980 thanks for the kind words I really appreciate it!!
@@matt-diy absolutely you don't know how much your appreciated 👍 just paid this car off and want to keep it going as long as possible your videos are to the point no crap all good stuff . It saves tons of money and I enjoy just being able to do this stuff on my car and with the video education like school I can not express the gratitude for you taking the time for people like myself to just have that know how and confidence to get it done 👍.all good can't say thank you enough. I tune in on em all and yours are excellent. I'm subscribed and look forward to learning and keeping the old Impala cruising down the road !! 👍🙏💞
Thanks though I am surprised these have no filter change option.
i though a transmission flush consisted of changing transmission oil and some kind of transmission filter .I didnt know it was that easy and a transmission flush runs about 189.00 bucks
Yep pretty straightforward on these cars!! Some cars have a filter but this one is not serviceable.
Newer cars don't have filters they have filters built inside of the transmission that can't be taken off that's why you don't see filters serviceable same as fuel filters is built inside the fuel pump nowadays
Sucks because changing the filter is the best thing for a car that's never been serviced for a long time. Oh well. A good ol Transmission Slip additive should help your clutch packs engage smoother that is if it's not too late
. Any specific trans additive?
@@nickkrygier915Lucas transmission fix is pretty good.
Its been a cpuple of years, do yiu still have the car? Ifao, how has the transaxle continued to operate?
Unfortunately I no longer have the car so I’m not sure!
I have the 2014 limited, it’s at 139k and as far as I know, trans hasn’t been serviced. Would I be safe to do a drain and fill or just leave it at this point? Thank you!!
Or…. Should I try the Lucas stuff? Sometimes it shifts a little rough out of first gear.
Yes it is safe to drain and fill! Will probably shift smoother.
The manual says 5.3 quarts, I just did a drain on my 2012 and 6 quarts came out.
Should i put 6 back in?
Yes, put back in what came out!
I would change the fluid every 30k to keep it in tip top shape 100k is just to long to me no matter what any owners manual says. If you wait to long to change it, the fluid gets particals in it from the transmission wear items like the clutches and metal disks, it then it use to shifting with the dirt fluid and if you change the contaminated dirty fuild with new it starts to slip, thats why I would do 30k intervals. So around every 4th or 5th oil change I would change the transmission fluid.
I would agree however whoever owned this before me did not do that haha.
Would you consider me screwed if Im at 158k and haven't had it changed before? Had it since 115k and nobody before me has
@@localsupastar6729 certainly not ideal but I think changing it can still help for sure. Certainly can’t hurt you know?
@@matt-diy appreciate the quick reply, I'll see how it works this week and hopefully have some good news.
@@localsupastar6729 how did your it go for you?
My 2014 Chevy Impala starting to have a delay when is shifts gears is it safe to top off with some Lucas
You can try, did you do a fluid change yet?
I have a 2013 Impala with 292,000 miles on it. Is it safe to change the transmission fluid for the first time?
Yeah just do a few qts at a time every few thousand miles.
@@matt-diy Thanks, I'll do that and report back at some point.
How did it go
Yes how did it go as I have a 2015 impala with 135,000 miles and I wana do it
@@matt-diy what do u mean just do a few qts at a time
that was a good video . thanks. Jesus loves you John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life
Hey Matt,
I have a 2013. I changed the fluid and measured as it came out. It was right below 6 quarts, so I added 6. I am now trying to check the level and I keep seeming to be getting a high reading. I’m not sure if it was high before the change. Could you make a video on specifically youre reading the dipstick. I am seeing fluid present about 1/2 inch above the fishing weight looking dipstick part up onto the braided dipstick
Well I would but I no longer have the car unfortunately!!! If you feel it is too high though, just drain a little bit out at a time until you have the right level.
My 2018 Buick Encore says to keep the car level is it safe for me to change the transmission oil on ramps for that kind of car close transmission?
You will be fine using ramps!
@@matt-diy yes I did it and it was so easy I don't know why if it's in my head or something but my car feels like it's going faster
@@matt-diy thank you Matt
hey man is this process the same for a 2012-2016 buick lacrosse? it has the same engine and transnission
If that’s the case then most likely it will be!
@matt-diy its definitely the case, buick lacrosse chevy impala and cadillac xts have all the same bones and organs
Our 2013 Impala goes into gear slow. If I drain it like you did, can I pour in a bottle of Lucas Transmission fluid? keep an eye on the level. Nice video, very helpful.
Yep you could try some Lucas, it is pretty good stuff just make sure you watch the level.
Do you know how many quarts I will need to fill it back up?
Just measure what you take out it will vary.
Gracias bro
Is it still running good after the fluid change
Yep! Still doing great!
I have a 2015-16 impala limited lt it makes a grind sound randomly when making turns from a stop no check engine light?
Power steering pump or rack maybe?
Diff
I put 5 in in a half qourts in mine is that ok it's a 2014 limited 6t70 tranny 3.6 v6?
As long as that is the amount you took out!
Hi good evening
I live in Israel and have a 2017 Impala 3.6 engine
I was told not to change the transmission fluid ever because there will be problems
is it true?
My car traveled 100 kilometers?
That is not true, transmission fluid is not good forever.
Will it always be an exact amount of oil that came out?
It could vary, so it’s good to catch what comes out and put that back in.
& it wud B gud to check level on dipstick B4 chAnging it to match.. ofcoOrs... & I believe your supposed to put it in each gear for a second or 2 then back to park, B4 checking👋
@@ezwa9979 you can’t check it
@@ezwa9979before driving it. Good reply.
No oil pan?
No need to remove it.
@@matt-diy thank you I was wondering if you had to remove it.
Check out the process of rebuilding this car from an accident!

What?!? 😂 I had no idea it was like an oil change...
Yep not bad!
do a cooler line exchange next
I will keep that in mind for the future!!
What year is this car
2012
👍 🤩
thanks for the info, also that poor car needs an engine wash down...
Your right it did…not sure why I didn’t do that haha.
Looks like normal dirt to me. You must have never worked on vehicle’s before lol. Would you like to judge his looks as well ?
Where do you change the transmission filter at?
This car doesn’t have a serviceable transmission filter.
@@matt-diy ok great I was making sure I have a 2013 but when I bought the fluid they gave me a filter but I see I dont now , watching your video
@@matt-diy I finished up abt 2 hours ago . Took it for a run on the highway . Man it runs so much better.. thanks my guy
@@driven24djackson hey that’s awesome man!! Great job! 😁
There may be one in the transmission pan.
This body is actually from 2006-2013 guys! After 2014 it’s the newer body
But I believe the transmission is different before 2012?
@@matt-diy yes before that it is the 4t65e which is a different process
They made this body style until 2016 it was known as the Impala Limited. It crossed over with the newer/current body style. For what I do not know...
These body are made up to 2015, they are the old body style but GM still made a new body style in 2014
GM also made 14-16 9th gen model fleets too for rental companies btw
Dealer near me wanted $340 for just the change.
Just nuts.
Why didn’t you change the filter?
It doesn't have a serviceable filter
@@stephenwilliams7563 I’m reading that mine, a 2013 impala LTZ doesn’t even have a pan you can drop. Just a plug you use to drain like the oil.
@@p.macomber6901 correct that's how the 2012-2016 are that's why it's important to service the transmission regularly to prevent issues
@@stephenwilliams7563 yup. I bought it used at 56,000 miles. I had the transmission fluid changed at the dealer. Had them flush it. Im at 118,000 miles now and I’m going to change it again. But I think I’m going to just drain and refill it myself. I just checked it it doesn’t smell but it does need to be changed it’s not bright pink but it’s not black either. Probably a good time to make that change
Yeah no serviceable filter in this model 😁
Changed mine at 103000 now it slips
Sure you put exactly what came out back in? And no extra?
Same I got mine changed early and I get bad jolts in 1st and 2nd gear
Have you ever had a transmission fluid change before?
Thank You
